Return to The Taper's Database Music List for keith martin
Last Update: April 14, 2012
Show Count: 636

Trading Rules:

I am currently wanting to get every .sbd that I possibly can get of Grateful Dead, Furthur Festival, The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur, RatDog, Phil n' Friends, etc

(Anything that has to do with the original members of the GD)

I have many, many, many shows that I have not yet posted on here, but I have most of everything Furthur has done since late 2009 to present in .DSBDs

I will be updating my list by the end of the summer (2012)

Just like most people I am working on preserving all my music to external HDDs, but I still rip to disc when needed.

I decoded to WAV... rejoined and recut them. Also came without a setlist which I did my best to mock up. I'm not so sure bout the names of some of the new songs but they all rock.

One looking at the concert poster (which can be see at the following): < http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/2635/jcards/ja_4.jpg > can determine: There were shows from 31st July to 5th August according to the poster, ("evenings at 8.30, matinees on Wednesday and Saturday") which would mean a total of 8 shows [Mon. 7/31, Tues. 8/1, Weds. 8/2 matinee, 8/2 evening, Thurs. 8/3, Fri. 8/4, Sat. 8/5 matinee, 8/5 evening]. David Sorochty: "Before New Potato Caboose Jerry says "This is a song called New Potato Caboose, don't you know". Viola Lee Blues goes into a short Feedback and cuts off right near the very end, just as Jerry and then Pigpen start playing the Merry-Go-Round Broke Down (Looney Tunes) melody. A silly kind of ending to an intense song". RECORDINGS 30 SB. Master reel > 1 reel generation > DAT > circulation. Before Alligator Bobby says "We only have time for one more unfortunately and we're gonna do a song we laughingly refer to as 'Alligator'. Ha, Ha!" David Sorochty: "Alligator ends with one of the most dramatic endings ever for this song. It finishes with Jerry's guitar cranking and screeching eeeeoowww!! It has a reverb type echo to it that adds to the cranking effect and its pretty stunning. You have to hear it to appreciate it." 3. Commonly circulates with 8/4/67. 3 CD-R SBD MC>D>CD>SoundForge>CD (See Notes) Sound is generally a bit muddy, some hiss Pigpen's voice is almost inaudible at times and sometimes distortion & pops from Keith's piano pick-up, the best & most complete version currently in circulation A lot of minor anomalies (mainly clicks) throughout discs 1 + 2 d3t03: tape warble @18:47-18:52, sounds like a master cassette flaw d1t06: very beginning is missing (a few seconds worth) Bill Giles remastering notes: "What do you do with an excellent concert that circulates digitally on muddy CD only and for which cassette copies, while superficially brighter, carry a lot of noise and distortion? Frustrating. I suspect the CD's lack of edge is the result of an uninspired noise reduction job [which makes the MC>D>CD lineage questionable]. I've simply tried to brighten it up by re-equalisation. I've also rebalanced the tracks (the right track was relatively overweight) and attenuated a few glitches. It ain't great, but it's definitely better. From the master disc, the opening notes of Big Boss Man are missing, and the start of Good Lovin' is an AUD patch; and there are some crackles, particularly in Brown-Eyed Women and Truckin', and a number of drop-outs and wobbles throughout the concert. I would not describe it as 'remastered' - just 'tidied up'. I guess linage should read: MR>??>CDR>Sound Forge 4.5>CDR"

5 Various: see notes (there are 4 GD discs plus 1 NRPS disc, Total=5 discs Discs 1 & 2 are a compilation of multiple Audience sources which were used to piece together the complete 1st set and first 4 songs of the 2nd set. A big thanks to Mick Etherington, Dave Lang, Simon Mould, Simon Phillips, as well as Chris Jones- the only taper we can identify- for supplying their copies of this show, as well as Alan Schlissel and Steve Barbella for getting the different versions all in one place. The various versions were all speed corrected, but there are still some speed fluctuations and "wow and flutter" here and there. Discs 3 & 4 are supplied from a Master Soundboard Reel > DAT source. The previously circulating, 2nd set partial Betty Board was used to patch "The Other One". There is a 5th disc which contains the NRPS set and is not for the faint of heart.

4 CD-R lineage unknown, but believed to be 10" 2-track reel master>1 cassette generation>DAT>1 cassette generation>circulation listed at www.resourcesfortraders.com This is a speed corrected and restored version of the complete 4-disc set that is circulating. It replaces that set and an older 3-disc version that cut off during "Comes A Time". The 4-disc source was missing the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone". Those parts were restored using clips from the 3-disc set. Also restored was a short blurb from Weir at the end of "Morning Dew". "Ramble On Rose" has been moved to the beginning of disc 3 where it belongs. Detailed notes on the restoration are below. Thanks to terrapinstation for providing the newer 4-disc set that this was based on.

4 CD-R S:MR>DATx5>CD Note: This is superior to all circulating copies. The lineage of the DAT is guaranteed. I did the transfer myself. The DAT was played on a Panasonic SV-3700, transferred to my Delta DiO 2496, recorded with SoundForge 4.5, and tracked and burned with CD Architect. EAC was used to create the SHN files. There is a <1 second patch in Playin' to fix a small spot of tape warble. The Morning Dew was patched from another previously circulating version with 10-second crossfades on each side to minimize the difference in quality. There is also a small patch in Sugar Magnolia. All of these patches came from previously circulating copies.

Completed on December 12, 2004. http://www.deadacated.com/BerthaRemasters.htm Source used 26933 via Tol, by Chris Ladner. Light Digital Noise Reduction was found with Spectral Analysis prior to Bertha Remastering. The same DNR was found on source 12657, which is the source Chris used for 26933. It is not known who applied the noise reduction, but they did a decent job, producing no audible artifacts. The noise reduction had only minor effects on the remastering process. Spectral Analysis also shows three different fingerprints for the soundboard portion. This would tend to indicate that the soundboard portion did not all come from the same source. The AUD patches are pretty rough. I considered removing them, but decided to leave them in. As the AuD portions transition back into the board, one gets a pretty good feel for the quality of this 72 board. The soundboard mix is all over the place at the start. No vocals on d1t02 until 5:47. It takes a couple tracks to settle in. Strangely, the channels were swapped towards the beginning of The Other One and I swapped them back. There are lots of small digiblips throughout. These were, most likely, caused during the transfer. I removed Between 40 and 50 of them by editing individual samples. In addition, a few fade-out/ins were added to clean up transitions. There is some very sweet sounding early 72 bass in this one. Enjoy! In conversion from source discs it was necessary to remove 4118-sample gaps from Disc #1 (this corresponds to approx 1/10th of a second, not the 2-second gaps one would expect with TAO) between most tracks. For disc #2, the gaps were 89377 samples (2 seconds + a little bit). Removal of these gaps from discs #1 & #2 left seamless joins. For disc #3, there were 133477 sample-gaps (3-and-a-bit seconds!!), and minor repairs were necessary at each gap to avoid clicks. A very small number of additional clicks and gaps were removed - many remain, especially right at the beginning of disc #1.

3 CD-R Source: SBD Lineage: S:MR > cassette > DAT > CD > EAC > SHN Jim Powell's notes: There are conflicting reports whether the SBD master is on cassettes or reels, but it sounds like it would have to be reels. The last 26 seconds of Here Comes Sunshine is missing on our copy of the SBD and is patched in using an AUD master from a cassette copy of unknown low generation. 22 seconds in Eyes Of The World are patched from this AUD source also. The 22-second cut in Eyes looks like a cassette tape flip introduced when the reels were transcribed to 1st gen cassette. The missing conclusion of Here Comes Sunshine is harder to account for on this hypothesis, but there seems a reasonable chance that both missing segments are intact on the master reels. First set highlights include TLEO, Row Jimmy, GSET and China Cat > Rider. The Here Comes Sunshine times almost 16 minutes, is the longest known on circulating tape and probably the best. The Dark Star is the third longest known at 43:28, and one of the all time best. It is the fraternal twin of 11/11/73. Dave Greenberg did the patches. David Gans supplied DATs of the 1st gen cassette SBD and Jim Powell instigated the project, supplied the AUD cassette used to patch the SBD's defects, and wrote this note.

3 CD-R S:MR>1 cass>DAT>ZA2>SHN [revised from original info file] Please enjoy this tasty tidbit from Louisville, KY June 18, 1974 courtesy of some anonymous sources, as well as the collective efforts of Darrin Sacks and David Hollister This version sounds nothing like the previously-circulating "sbd>reel>reel>dat" version and represents a MAJOR upgrade. The music actually comes to us from two different tapes with very similar qualities. However, one tape had about the first 1 minute and 40 seconds missing on Promised Land, so I spliced it in from the other tape. The other tape had some other problems, not to mention a good portion of the between song banter cut out, so needless to say, we used the good tape for that.

There are numerous split second zaps of diginoise throughout the first set. I wasn't going to circulate it because of the amount of time it will take to fix them. I have decided to let the show out as is. The patching is hard to do since the flaws are very short. The 2nd set does NOT have this problem.

The only edting I did was retracking, fixing loud burst at 0:01 of Promised Land, fades, and cleaning up the dropouts. Although there was a nice piece of cassette his at the end of Might as Well that I could have used for NR, I opted not to as the overall signal-to-noise ratio is high, precluding any need for NR. A few words from the recordists, in their own words: -Mike Grace "I recorded both those shows on a Sony TcD5-M recorder and Nakamichi 300 super-cardiod mics. We were set up about 30 feet in front of the sound board. This was one of the last tours before the official 'Tapers Section' was established. We had to sneak the equipment into the show although security was not too tight. The tapes were transferred from the same Sony deck to a highly modified Sony 75ES DAT recorder."

3 CD-R Lineage: SBD > GD Digital Multi-Track Master > Marin County Source Mixdown DAT > SSSB OFFICIAL SHOW NOTES: Bruce Hornsby on grand piano and vocals the entire show; according to the Marin County source, "Jerry wasn't himself" for this show (vocal problems); Garcia did not have the usual amount and type of effects added to his vocals, and his levels were slightly louder in overall mix; technical problems with Hart's percussion and MIDI interface cut "Drums" short; GD master digital recording was paused for approx. 4 min. while the problem was attempted to be corrected, w/o success, on the master SBD mixer; the venue's audio was not affected as much/as long as the engineers switched some channels and bypassed the main mixer for about 5 minutes; for "Space" > "Miracle", Phil's bass level was low, due to the master mixer's channel reassignments and pre-set levels; any/all editing, fades, NR, hiss elimination, phase shifting/"time smear" correction, jitter elimination, EQ, and quantization noise elimination (when down-converting audio to 16-bit / 44.1 kHz for CD-R mastering), were all performed using 32-bit / 96 kHz digital realm processing at Serafin Station Studio B

3 CD-R Source: SBD>DAT>CM>DAT>CDR> Conversion: EAC(secure)>CD WAV>Cool Edit Pro>SHN(seekable) COMMENTS: D2t01 (Scarlet Begonias) Healy's mics. for the crowd mix the levels change in the first few seconds. After that it's fine :) D2t02 (Fire On The Mountain) Static @ 10:34 thought 10:38 right channel. I deleted right channel and replaced with left channel. D2t06 (Drums) Static @ :58 throught 1:04 right channel. I deleted right channel and replaced with left channel. Also a cassette flip and drop out @ 8:44 removed. End of D2t06 (Drums) and beginning of D3t01 (Jam) there is a drop out or blank space of music that was removed for seemless future use. I also chose to keep D2 track 1 through 5 uncut to keep the jam's together. This is one 3 disks but could be place on to 2 80 minutes disks but taking D2t01 and D2t02 onto the end of disk 1 but as you will see it would be a shame to break it up. Shntool confirms all sector boundries.

Drums was on both Disk 2(end) and Disk 3(begining). I spliced the song together to make it seemless and Drums is now complete on Disk 2(end). D2t06 pop @ 12:51.474 right channel removed and replaced with left channel, pop also on same track on left channel @ 12:51.476 thru 12:51.478 removed and replace with right channel.

I received this seed from Patrick Nobels via FTP. It came without a setlist and a request from Patrick to fill in the missing info. I used the song titles listed at www.setlist.com for this date to fill in the missing info. As originally tracked, Birdsong was split up into 2 tracks. I converted the entire show back to wav, and used SHNtool to re-join the Birdsong tracks, d1t05 & d1t06. I then re-named all of the tracks to etree standards in the proper order. Converted back to SHN with MKWact with seek tables appended. Verified track boundaries with SHNtool. Seeded to etree by Marc Pujol 3/13/2003

1 cd-r/.wav sbd > ??? > cdr > eac > wav > flac Notes: - I compared this to the version that is currently available to stream from Wolfgang's Vault and found that for most of it the channels had been swapped over. This has been corrected. - I also found thast the pitch was slightly off, so I have also corrected that. - crossfades have been put in to smoothe transitions between some tracks - I also applied a little NR using iZotope Ozone. Comments: - The mix on this is a little different to the version on Wolfgang's Vault

2 CD-R /.wav AUD from the Taper's Section AKG 451s->Lunatec->DA-P1->Digi Patched D-8 ->DA-P1->Computer->SHN I received this show in a trade from Susan Gibons as audio very shortly after it occurred. I ripped it right away in a bit-accurate manner with EAC and archived the SHN's. Since my md5's don't match those at db.etree.org I am including them here for clarification in case my "version" gets into the trading community at large. Upon re-listening to this show I noticed a few odd noises throughout. Claps seem to have a very fast attack rate and sound similar to digi-pops. Also, there are sections (e.g. Scarlet and Fire) where it sounds as if something is clipping....cause is unknown.

There is some loud clapping near the mics between songs, but luckily not much during the music Notes: DAT>WAV>SHN conversion by Marc Pujol 3/3/02 Phil and Friends opened for Bob Dylan Since this was a Dylan / Phil tour, due to Dylan's anti-taping policy the tapers had to stealth tape, which is why the mics were hidden in a hat for this FOB source. The source DAT included about 8-9 minutes of the tapers talking before the show. It's very funny to listen to the conversation so I've included it in the SHN files. You can hear them discussing the mics hidden in the hat and getting them setup just right. It is also funny to hear them discuss shows they recently taped and trades they made. This track is totally optional, but well worth listening to for a laugh.

Files also were renamed from td to dead which is etree name standards.

This is indeed a good sounding recording with an exceptional stereo image, but please don't expect a "commercially produced" quality from this tape. There are a few "age spots" as one would expect in a tape of this age. That being said, it still kicks ass and it's better to have it than not. Please enjoy LOUD & pass it on...
