If you haven't heard of Curtis Mayfield, do yourself a favor, and give it a listen. If his superlative songwriting skills, smooth guitar licks, and sweet falsetto vocals aren't enough to grab you, consider this; his messages of love, compassion, perseverance, and temperance are just as socially, and politically relevant today as they were during the civil rights movement. Curtis, we miss you.
"Now is always the right time,
With something positive in your mind,
Whenever something pulls you down,
Just get back up and hold your ground."

*Acoustic set through 1:50 of El Paso, entire electric set is MAC>C>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Ken Leigh's master, recorded from the center loge with a Sony TC-110 cassette deck with built-in microphone
*Uncle John's Band and NRPS set is MAC>C>R>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Ken Leigh's master
*From 1:50 of El Paso through 0:03 of Uncle John's Band is MAC>R>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Dave Tamarkin's master, recorded from the floor with a Sony Dictaphone
*There are some small master glitches ~1:30 of Black Peter.
*The Tamarkin master is fairly brutal, but it's the only tape which supplies the end of El Paso and Brokedown Palace. There is some serious tape warble on these tunes, and there is some very bad tape crackle between songs, which I have removed where possible without touching the music. Listener beware! For completists only.
*There is a master tape flip at 6:14 of All I Ever Wanted. Very little music seems to be missing. I have smoothed the cut.
*There is a master glitch at 2:37 of Candyman.
*There are a few level fluctuations in Candyman.
*There is a master tape flip after Candyman. No music is missing.
*The Easy Wind which has circulated with this date has been determined to be from July 10, 1970, and, as such, has not been included here. Based on the tapes, it does not seem that Easy Wind was played this evening.
*There is a small master glitch at 4:03 of Drums following Good Lovin'.
*From Dave Tamarkin's recollection, there is a broken string which accounts for the break after Good Lovin'. The electric set was one long set, not two sets as it has sometimes circulated in the past.
*There is a master tape flip at 7:30 of Lovelight. Very little music seems to be missing. I have smoothed the cut.

Source switches to MAC>?>C>D where the reel ends at 6:17 of GDTRFB.
Not Fade Away cuts very near end.
These sources were originally compiled by David Hollister. The
audience patches were subsequently massaged (normalized -9 db
and crossfades added) by Sean Cribbs April 25, 2002.
Thanks go to Andy Lemieux for providing me with a copy of David's
original compilation, and to Noah Weiner for providing the
audience recording and for his helpful advice.

Notes:
From the point of the splice in Rider, all the way through
Deal, there is an oscillating fuzziness that sounds like
tape waver, reminiscent of how some of the water-damaged
Betty tapes sound. It is particularly bad on Deal. Playing
reverts to the previous cleaner sound, and the sound is fine until
about the 6:11 point in GDTRFB. From here on, there is an
oscillating loss of the left channel, again sounding like a
problem with tape wavering as it passes over the record head.
D1t01 (Big River): intermittent static in right channel 2:34-2:45
D1t02 (Sugaree): occasional right channel static, some soundboard problems
D1t07 (Rider): cut/splice @ 1:57; some tape waver and fuzziness in latter half
D1t09(Tennessee Jed)-D2t01 (Deal): intermittent tape waver/oscillation?
D2t07 (Around And Around): dropout @ 3:39
D3t04 (Wharf Rat): discontinuity/splice @ 7:12
D3t08 (GDTRFB)-10 (OMSN): intermittent fadeout of left channel |

{This recording combines Audience and Soundboard recordings to produce the complete show. The quality of the SBD is excellent; the audience, very good. Incomplete SBD recordings also circulate (Set 1 and Terrapin > End).
There are no splices in between songs--all crowd noise and tunings are intact (except where soundboard recording meets audience recording). All segues are intact. Jerry plays the theme from the film "Close Encounters of the Third kind" during the "Garcia Jam" on Disc 2

Master Soundboard Cassette > Cassette > CDR
Master Audience Cassette > Sennheiser 441 mics
Master Audience Cassette > Nakamichi CM300's + CP4's
There are mix problems thru the 1st half of "Minglewood Blues" (disc 1 track1). The Soundboard cuts at the 6:54 mark of "The Music Never Stopped" (disc1 track 9), the Sennheiser 441 audience source is used to provide the final 1:30 of "The Music Never Stopped" as well as Bob's set break announcement. The Soundboard cuts at the 4:35 mark of "Fire on the Mountain" (disc 2 track 6), the Nakamichi CM300's + CP4's audience source provides balance of that track from the 4:35 mark thru the 10:13 mark. During the Drumns/Space sequence, the quality of the Soundboard quickly deteriorates to the point of being unlistenable. Therefore, the balance of the show, disc 3 in its entirety, is provided via the Nakamichi CM300's + CP4's source (which I find _very_ enjoyable).
As an attendee of this show, I can attest to the security force's zeal when dealing with the taping community on this night, hence the multiple audience sources used for patching. The taper with the Nakamichi CM300's was evidently "busted" towards the end of the 1st set and missed "The Music Never Stopped" set closer entirely, necessitating the use of Sennheiser 441 audience source.
This is a personal favorite of mine and while this copy is not "just exactly perfect",I don't believe you'll find a higher quality, or more complete copy, anywhere.

Notes:
Purported lineage of this was SBD>MC>DAT>CDR. Both Jools and I agree that
There is at least one more C gen in the mix due to the slight hiss.
Nevertheless it is a very listenable SBD that has been "missing" for far
too long.

Note: I received this show on cd directly from the dat transfer. I noticed after extraction that eac was reading the peak levels at a maximum of 28%. I then extracted each disc as one big .wav and normalized peak to 98%. I then used CDWAV to remark the tracks and edit out some interminably long pauses in between a couple of tracks. The end result sounds pretty good IMHO.---Enjoy--Jeff M.

Notes:
The tape flip durig Drums and the end of The Weight (which still gets cut) were both patched with a differant version of the show which I found on etree. The version on etree was listed as a DSBD, which it isn't. The DSBD did NOT circulate until now, and only the first set circulates. I compared the Cassette Master that I have here to what currently circulates and what I have is cleaner. The etree version is brighter and tinny with more hiss which leads me to believe that it has multiple cassette gens and/or possibly some improper dolby decoding involved. I can confirm 100% that my source info is correct. The whole show is seemless. Also, it is raining so hard that you can hear it on the tape.

{There are no splices in between songs--all crowd noise and tunings are intact. All segues are intact. This was a tribute concert to Bill Graham after Graham's death in a helicopter crash. The Dead headlined. On this recording, John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Joan Baez, Graham Nash, and Kris Kristofferson appear. This recording comes from the KRQR FM broadcast. |

Notes:
I know there are at least 3 other versions of this .shn that are currently circulating. I have not heard them all but I do know that this is superiour to the ones that have DAE in lineage and have some minor skips throughout. Also this source does not have the chunck of digi in Corrina like some do.
Disc 2 Tracks 5,6 & 7 are patched in with the following source:
dsbd (pre-fm)>dat>spdif>cdr>eac>shn (My DAT had a few errors in these tracks)
There are 3 digital tones during Box of Rain. They appear to be from the Soundboard and are present on every version I have heard.
If you find any errors that are not noted please drop me a line at jason@spreadwidepanic.com |

Lineage: The person who I traded with to get this show only knows the following: he thinks it's
a SBD>CAS (a few gens)>SoundForge>CDRWIN.
I was delighted with the sound quality considering the dodgy lineage. This rehersal is a wonderful
glimpse into the genius of New Orleans piano king James Booker, bringing a new (Orleans) dimension to
the JGB sound.

Comments: Long show. O u t s t a n d i n g audience recording - Vasseur's recordings are among the best 90s JGB aud's that circulate and this recording is definitely among the very best of those. Just a couple of minor flaws due to the "real world" - getting bumped/brushed and balloon pops periodically throughout the show. In a few instances, I applied - 2 dB attenuation to the extreme examples under maximal waveform magnification to prevent damage to speakers/tympanic membranes using SF 6.
* d1t01 - 09:30 loud bump/pop -attenuated.
* d1t04 couple of times at the end of the track during the space between songs.
* weird sound at the beginning/mics getting bumped into at beginning of d1t05.
Thanks to J.Powell for providing the CDR source.

Incomplete-
But don't let that stop you!
This piece of music, In my opinion , is the all time greatest solo Garcia
work I have heard- in particular, track 4, beyond that, I have never seen it in circulation
If you think I'm wrong, if you have something better, I'd love to hear it!
Sterchelle@aol.com (or if you have the missing pieces)
Also, this disc was purchased in Japan days before the start of the Gulf war
The title on the disc is Legend of Mary , which I assume to be Legion of Mary, but DeadBase
lists this as Garcia and Saunders , but the additional players suggests this was a LoM show
A Free show in the Park

Jerry Garcia - guitar and vocals

{A Perfect Echo - Neil Young 1967-2001
All problems should be reported to: perfect.echo@neil-rocks.de
How could I introduce the new tree better than in the words of Jim and Braden, the masterminds behind the project?
Here are the main details:
Jim's introduction:
... our good friend Braden Strickler has done it again. He's recently compiled and lovingly mastered, almost exclusively from soundboard recordings,
an 8-DISC SET which runs chronologically from August 1967 to January 2001. It's like an expanded version of the "Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy" concept,
but with far superior sound.
Thank, of course, to Braden, for agreeing to let me tree this one. Braden makes incredible compilations, often - for his own enjoyment and that of
his friends. Many of them are non-Neil-related, and I helped convince him that this one deserves wide distribution on Rust.
Here's Braden's "introduction" to "Neil Young: A Perfect Echo," which includes the track list for the 8-disc set:
NEIL YOUNG: A PERFECT ECHO
This is a compilation of soundboard recordings from 1967-2001. The term soundboard is a bit of a misnomer. By soundboard I mean, basically, not an audience recording. Some are true soundboards, while others are FM, TV, ALD, or video-sourced recordings. The recordings were all taken from cdrs or videos that are circulating in the trading community.
Each track was checked out in Cool Edit with headphones, and may have had some cleanup done to remove any odd clicks, hiss, or other sound quality problems. The volume was set on each track so as to have them at similar volumes. Fades were added at the beginnings and ends of each track, so the tracks don't segue, for the most part. There are a couple of segues where successive songs were taken from the same concert, so it still needs to be burned DAO. Most of the banter between tracks was removed to make room for more tracks.
There are a total of 115 tracks (109 songs, as 6 get repeated). Some years were heavy with available recordings (1976 and 1989 come to mind). I tried to balance the set by not using too many songs from a single show. The entire 8 discs run in, roughly, chronological order.
Originally, I started making this as just a personal compilation from my collection. It took about a month to put together, including the planning of what would be included, the remastering of the tracks, and, finally, the creation of the artwork. At first, I didn't have a title and was just going to call it "a soundboard archive." While fixing some soft static in Natural Beauty, the title came to me, when he sang "I heard a perfect echo die...". I was going to call it "Perfect Echo Die", but Jim Leonard, our friendly AOTW coordinator, persuaded me to leave off the word "die," so now we have the title "A Perfect Echo".
The intent was to make a nice sampling of soundboard recordings from throughout his career. Its sort of like an expanded "Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy," with the intent to keep the sound quality higher and more consistent.

Notes:
-Fades added at start and end of sets.
-Dithering from 24bit > 16bit with Apogee's UV22HR Algorythm.
-Resampled from 96kHz > 44.1kHz in WaveLab 4.0
-The 24bit/96kHz version of this seed is also available.
Flaws:
-There is some minor clipping during the bass solo during Set 2 Track 3 (Arf She Cried). The levels appeared to have been turned up at the console fairly significantly. A slight gain adjustment was made on the fly accordingly by the taper to avoid further clipping.
