I recorded directly from his master tape to my computer using Cool Edit, divided the tracks using CD Wave and then converted to SHN before recording my copy onto cd. Dan had this to say about recording this show "Garcia and Kahn, The Ritz 1/27-28/86, An old buddy of mine from college was living in New York City and was employed as the light man at the Palladium. He knew the soundman at the Ritz and had my tape deck hooked into the soundboard before I could even score a ticket. They also had a killer video feed going on, but they wouldn't allow me to patch in with the portable VCR I had brought with me." Filler on LOM 4-12-75 )

Taped and transferred by Ed Perlstein, EAC > SHN by Joe Jupille (jjoops AT attbi DOT com). - I consider this to be an essential part of any music collection. There is a long-circulating .shn set which has the advantage of having been .shn'd without any DAE. This set has the (to me, more important!) advantage of being more complete, including everything up to the point that the plug was pulled on Ed Perlstein's deck. The other set also has the emcee announcing "Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders" just as they launch into Think, but I could not get it patched in very cleanly, and so I left the CDs as they were mastered. The two sources sound equally excellent to my ears. - d2t04 Roadrunner cuts in, unknown missing - The plug was pulled on the board patch during Mystery Train. For the whole of the song, the R channel was considerably weaker than the left, and from 3:05.357 until the end it was basically missing. Until that point I applied a 3.0db volume gain, and after that point I patched the L channel over the R. Mystery Train then cuts out @ 3:39. I faded down the last 0.25 seconds to ease the pain of the cut. )

A > CD - This is a beautiful recording of an extremely laid back show. The original .shn set had the end of How Sweet It is clipped, as well as a reel flip in Mystery Train. How Sweet lacked about nine seconds at the every end, which I patched in along with the set break announcement and crowd. I patched about 23 seconds of missing material over the reel flip in Mystery Train. Patch material was provided by the amazing audience recording made by Bob Menke and Louis Falanga (Sony ECM-250 + Sony ECM-270 mics [onstage] > Sony TC-152 master cassettes). I re-.shn'd other tracks to make them seekable, hence the all new md5s. - No flaws noted. )

Jerry Garcia Band - 04/03/76 - Lisner Auditorium, G.W.U., cdr, 2 - A- ( - This is an absolute must-have! A gorgeous recording of a great show, perhaps my favorite of 1976. The Lonesome and a Long Way From Home is particularly nice. - This is not the same as an earlier-circulating version of this show, also an excellent master and also missing Sugaree (security was seemingly very tight), which is often misattributed to Jerry Moore and circulates as MAC > reel > DAT > CD. - No flaws noted. )

Jerry Garcia Band - 11/20/76 - Pismo Theater, cdr, 3 - B- ( Flaws: d1t01 - first few notes missing d1t04 - d/o at 08:41 removed using SF6 with a small amount of music missing. d2t02 - d/o @ 07:08 with truncation of "yankee laid him in his grave" and the rest of the verse. d2t06 - d/o @ 10:26 with small subsecond bit of missing music. d3t03 - d/o @ 19:33 with a "BEEP" in the middle deleted with no apparent missing music. There are a few tape pauses between tracks however the overall recording quality/level of hiss remains the same for the entire show, suggesting the entire recording is from a single source. The pitch was flat and I increased by .02 semitones corresponding to a transposition ratio of 1.01162 using SF6. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 12/22/76 - Keystone, cdr, 2 - B+ ( Notes: - John Rich plays pedal steel guitar on all but Let it Rock and Ride Mighty High. - There is some oversaturation throughout the recording, most prominently during Mystery Train and Ride Mighty High, but it isn't too bad. Jerry Garcia Band - 11/27/77 - The Palladium, cdr, 3 - B+ ( )
Jerry Garcia Band - 12/10/77 - Warner Theater, cdr, 3 - A- ( The source is how the source discs were given to me. Due to the almost non-existant tape hiss, it is very likely that this is, in fact, directly from the master audience cassette. This is a true FOB tape, and the audience can be very chatty at times (you'll hear some nice conversations between songs and some interesting song requests) but usually quiet down while the songs are actually playing. This is a great recording of a superb '77 show. --Ben Wirth *The taper never seems to get fully situated or happy with the way things are going as there are numerous spots of volume drops/changes, channel drops, channel swaps, and some dropouts at various points. It is also of note that almost none of the track transitions are continuous...the taper seems to like pausing the tape after every song...this causes the start of almost all the tracks to be missing some material...I tried my best to edit this in a way in which it is a more smooth listen than the original hard cuts. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 03/12/78 - Suffolk Forum, Commack, cdr, 1 - A ( )
Jerry Garcia Band - 03/18/78 - Warner Theater (Early & Late), cdr, 2 - A ( )
Jerry Garcia Band - 03/22/78 - Veteran's Hall, cdr, 2 - ( Last Show with Maria Muldaur. Multiple analog generations with a significant amount of hiss. Sound quality is a bit spotty and gets even spottier by the end of the second set. End of last song of each set is clipped. Very primitive and open-ended jamming sounding 'Cats Under the Stars' in its lucky #7 performance. Sounds like a band having a great time. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 08/12/78 - Keystone, cdr, 2 - ( Taped by John Angus and Scott Hart (Hunt?), Sony ECM99 (first tier, center) > Sony TC-158 (Maxell UD-XLIIs) > Sony TC-D5 playback > Roland UA-30 USB > MAC G3 Powerbook > wav > CD/0 > HP 9350i extraction using EAC > speed correction (pitch shifted up by 40 cents) using Sound Forge XP version 5 > tracking using CD Wave > .shn encoding using mkwACT. Proper sector boundaries verified using shntool. A>D by slip; extraction, tracking, and .shn encoding by Joe Jupille; speed correction by Stephen Kinsch. There is a touch of oversaturation throughout, but it is quite minor. The first few notes of most songs are clipped. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 08/12/78 - Keystone, cdr, 2 - ( Intermittent left channel clapping during Rhapsody. During the last few seconds of Mission, the tape speed increased dramatically with a pitch offset of 1 octave. This was corrected using Soundforge 6 prior to tracking. )

The taper was busted after Gomorrah. For that material, Michael Parrish's first gen reels were transferred directly to CD, w/ no DAT stage. An unknown- provenance but very nice soundboard, probably reel master and probably at most one cassette gen, supplies the end of set II. Shntool confirms proper sector boundaries for all tracks. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 12/21/79 - Keystone Palo Alto, cdr, 2 - A ( )
Jerry Garcia Band - 01/20/80 - Keystone Palo Alto, cdr, 2 - B-- ( The ends of Friend of the Devil and Russian Lullaby are cut. This is a fairly hissy recording, however it is still highly listenable with the first recognized "Eleanor Rigby Jam" in the middle of a smokin' 18 minute plus "after midnight" show closer. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 02/07/80 - The Catalyst, cdr, 2 - A- ( Adjustments in vocal/guitar overall mix level during the first minutes of the SBD portion of Sugaree which is vocal heavy. In order for the audience splices to match the SBD source, I applied a very slight (- 0.20 semitone) pitch shift and then a + 2.0 dB gain prior to splicing. Splices: d1t01: first 01:28, d/o repaired with 05:00-05:14 from audience d1t03: d/o with 04:02 - 04:33 from audience d2t02: Audience from 14:03 on. d2t03 - I attempted to smooth the fade out/silent gap on the tape flip and restore it at least to rhythmic seamlessness. )

Cassette transfer and CD mastering by John Jay Hance, FLAC encoding by jjoops. - Decent recording, more or less what you might expect from the back of the floor. But this is a pretty stellar show, featuring standout versions of Sugaree and Tore Up and what may be my favorite Mission in the Rain. - There seems to be more hiss for the first half of Sugaree than later, and overall perhaps a bit more than I would have expected. There are a few very light clicks audible in places, for example Simple Twist, when the music is very quiet. But the only edits undertaken were to smooth a number of tape transitions. - d2t02 Mission in the Rain clips in. )

The majority (set I and the encore) derives from Mark Cohen's FOB Nak 700s > Sony TC-D5. The rest (set II) derives from Jim Vita's FOB Senn 421s > Sony TC-D5M. I don't know details on the Vita transfer, but Cohen's was transferred as follows: master played back on Nak Dragon > ART DI/O > Cool Edit 2000 (including patching in of the Vita material) > master CD > HP 9350i extraction (EAC v0.9 beta 4) > minor editing using SF Studio 6.0 > sector boundary verification (shntool v1.01) > .shn encoding (mkwACT v0.97 beta 1). A > D by David Minches, CD > SHN by Joe Jupille. Notes/Flaws: - There is a touch of light static during Mission in the Rain and Gomorrah. I have confirmed that it is on some other copies of Vita's master, though I don't know if it's on all of them. In any event, it's pretty light. - The Run for the Roses -> Deal transition had a short gap and a one-second repeat, which were edited out using SF Studio 6.0. )

Jerry Garcia Band - 09/11/89 - The Centrum, cdr, 2 - B ( There are several digiglitch dropouts on the DAT master during the second set (Mission, Prudence, and Miracle - ouch). I smoothed these as best as possible using SF6, however they are still annoyingly perceptible. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 05/12/90 - Waikiki Shell, cdr, 2 - A- ( cuts during Lucky Old Sun )
Jerry Garcia Band - 08/10/91 - French's Camp on the Eel River, cdr, 2 - A- ( Comments: Hot recording performance and recording level wise with some infrequent intermittent peaking (on many levels) and an extremely full low end. At times noisy (rightfully) crowd losing it and intermittent close up individual clapping - its an outstanding performance. Pausing between some tracks during crowd. Phasing at times which seems to be present to some degree on most recordings from this venue - wind related? *Fourth and final performance ever of one of the most beautiful and soulful JGB songs - "Twilight". d1t01 - subsecond pop at 04:51 in the right channel penciled out using sf5. d2t05 - minor faint digistatic @ 00:22, 01:53 )
Jerry Garcia Band - 08/24/91 - Goldcoast Concert Bowl, cdr, 2 - A ( )
Jerry Garcia Band - 11/09/91 - Hampton Coliseum, cdr, 2 - A- ( Hornsby sits in the entire show. )
Jerry Garcia Band - 11/10/91 - Charlotte Coliseum, cdr, 2 - B ( Boomy recording with loud nearby audience members. 8.9 on the "Wooo Wooo!!!!" scale. The overall level of the first set was significantly lower than the second set so I applied a + 2.0 dB gain using SF5. The set was then retracked using cdwave. The second set was left as is. )

Legion of Mary - 10/31/74 - Memorial Gymnasium, cdr, 2 - A ( A new seed for this show. This show is complete and an excellent SBD throughout. Very slight splice in He Ain't Give You None at 6:01 Maybe one or two notes missing )

Reel > CD by Ed Perlstein, EAC > SHN by Joe Jupille (jjoops AT attbi DOT com).Notes/Flaws: - Amazing material!!! Essence of Legion of Mary -- nothing but pure, unadulterated instrumentals. Among many, many highlights, I will simply note that this version of People Make the World Go 'Round is about five times longer than any of the many other versions in circulation. It really takes the tune places you always thought it should have gone, but never seemed to. I felt similarly at many points during this material. - This is a mono recording. - Most songs clip in. - Favela faded to a splice @ 10:42 on the original CD copy, but this turned out to be during an 18-second repeated section. Similarly, Bossa Martin faded to a splice @ 7:57, but this was during a 48 second repeated section. Both obviously stem from analog generations somewhere up the line. I edited them out, and the tunes are seamlessly intact. - Pennies From Heaven splice @ 10:46. This is most probably a tape flip from the master. There is also a bit of very light static around 16:55-16:56, which I could not fix. - This is probably not the whole show, since the band is tuning when the tape cuts out. )
