May have another reel generation though. Music was very slow (offspeed recorder somewhere in the history). I increased the speed by 4% and this sounded pretty good. Didn't want to go too far. Used a light continuous noise filter to remove a bit of the tape hiss. Cleaned up a few assorted pops and gliches... There was distortion in Good Morning Little Schoolgirl that could not be improved. All editing done with Diamond Cut Millennium software. )

This set assembles complete copies of the 11th and the 12th in the best quality circulating. Except for the middle portion of the 11th, sound is excellent throughout; this inferior segment is listenable while leaving definite room for improvement if an upgrade shows up; we haven't been able to find one & don't want to delay further. Many people gave help on the way to creating this set of CDs. Dave Greenberg did the final masters. Jack Warner was instrumental in providing the difficult composite for the 2nd disc of 12/11/69, which was first mastered by Scott Clugston. RB, KW, JN and HB also provided important assistance. Jim Powell instigated the project and writes these notes. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland. )

Extraction by Conley Knott via EAC (logs report peak levels 100%, track quality 100% and no errors). This source is new to etree with this seed. Supplies set one. SBD #2: MSR> CAS> LYNXONE 24 Bit A/D Converter> CD> SHN> WAV. First seeded by Marshall Mcleod [etree shn id 301]. Supplies most of set two. SBD #3: MSC> CAS> DAT> CD-R> EAC> SHN> WAV. This seems to derive from the same orginal source as SBD #2 but have a different lineage (some distinctive cuts are identical while other cuts appear in different places; also SBD #3 has slightly higher hiss). First seeded by Art Cohen? [etree shn id 12947]. Supplies one set two patch. AUD: MAC (believed to be via Nak 300s)> R1> R2> (possibly R3>) DATs> CDRs> EAC> SHN> WAV. A/D conversion by Rob Bertrando, and first seeded by Darrin Sacks [etree shn id 302]. Probably derives from the tape originally recorded by Hugh Barroll. Supplies several set two patches.EDITING NOTES: Sound Forge XP 4.5 was used for edits as noted below, and to recompile the wavs into a single wav file in preparation for final retracking. CDWav was used to cut tracks along sector boundaries. shntool was used to confirm all wav files were cut on sector boundaries. mkwACT was used to convert shn>wav, wav>shn, and create the md5. 1. Entire first set: reduced pitch by -.566 semitones throughout set one to bring the pitch of SBD #1 within 0.03% of SBD #2 (using the Peggy-O on each source for direct comparison) 2. Half Step: attenuated severe mixing problems by significantly raising amplitude of first ~4.5 secs (which was inaudible on source CD); and lowering amplitude less drastically for the next ~1.5 secs 3. LL Rain: attenuated cassette tape flip @4:55 by splicing the two segments almost flush (no cross fade or overlap). The segment before the splice was unaltered, and the segment after the splice was softened with a short fade-in. 4. tuning: entire track supplied by AUD 5. Jam #1: first ~50 secs patched by AUD 6. Jam #1: 1:26 to 1:52 patched by SBD #3 7. Jam #1: last 0:11 patched by AUD (patch starts @8:02) 8. Drums: entire track supplied by AUD 9. Jam #2: first 0:05 patched by AUD 10. Playin (reprise): last 4:29 patched by AUD (patch starts @1:46) 11. Around: entire track supplied by AUD KNOWN FLAWS REMAINING: (1) The first 3 notes of Half Step are missing; (2) Distortion is present in first ~4.5 seconds of Half Step, where amplitude was raised as much as possible; (3) Most mix problems were left untouched, and persist through the first two songs of set one [Half Step> Franklin's]. The levels are re-adjusted several times before settling on a satisfactory mix partway through Franklin's; (4) A cut in LL Rain remains at the cassette tape flip. Probably ~2 seconds are missing. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Mahalo to Steve Milewski for answering a stranger's e-mail and supplying SBD #1. D1t02(Walkin' Blues) Major static @ 1:56 fixed. I copied right channel to the left and pasted. Also left to the right through out that second, it is still there but not as bad as it was. D2t02(Help On The Way) Static from 1:28 thru 1:30 un fixable. D2t04(Franklin's Tower) Drop outs and static @ 5:40 thru 6:07 patched in with aud source, also static from 10:12 thru 10:14 left channel removed and replaced with right channel the spot is still a little ruff but much better. D2t06(Terrapin Station) Static both channels from 1:48 thru 1:51 I used noise reduction to filter it out. Also static @ 5:39 filtered as well but still present. D3t01 (Jam) Cass. flip @ 8:51 , digi pop both channels @ 9:34 removed. D3t03(Stella Blue) Major Cut @ :56 with over 2 minutes missing! I patched in the aud from :56 thru 2:47. D3t04 (Not Fade Away) Digi static both channels from :57 thru 1:02 I used noise reduction to reduce most of the static. I used the aud to do patches only where there was missing music. There are some fluctuations in the mix and amplitude of the SBD portions, especially late in the 2nd set. The audience recording fills in the rest of the show, and is of decent quality. Sound Forge was used for normalization and pitch corrections for some portions. Notes: --audience patch in Playin' from 4:16 to 5:06 --during the latter half of Playin', several portions of the track were converted to mono to compensate for lengthy channel dropouts --audience patch in Jack Straw from 3:39 to 4:04 --during O1, there is an area converted to mono due to a large channel dropout --minor glitch at 5:37 in Eyes --noticeable mix/volume fluctuations during Eyes --audience patch in Eyes from 8:25 to 10:54

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, cdr, 3 D1 *1 Removed static at 08:16. *2 Reduced brief instances of static at 02:37, 02:39, 04:34 and 04:36. *3 Includes "We get high on you" banter. *4 Removed two loud instances of static from sound system. *5 Removed loud instance of static from sound system at 01:01 (both=left). D2 *1 Repaired splice at 19:03 (redundant material at both sides of splice--no music missing). *2 Reduced digital static in right channel at 00:31 (both=left). *3 Joined splice at 01:21 by removing about one second of material, with attention to keeping the backbeat intact. An alternate track for Big River is provided (gd73-03-16d2t09alt.shn) as a more pleasant workaround for the splice. For this alternate track, the splice was joined at 00:58 by removing about 29 seconds of material--the second chorus and second verse were removed. D3 *1 Removed digital static at 05:00 and 22:15; Repaired splice at 18:18 (a total of about 12 seconds of redundant material at both sides of splice--no music missing). *2 Borrowed Seth Jackson's excellent audience patch to repair splice at 07:37 to 08:07. *3 Some instances of static from sound system problem remain. In addition to the edits noted above, some "dead air" on the tape was removed from each disc.

From 2:10 to 3:00 of Scarlet Begonias the mix gets strange while Kid adjusts his levels. We have left this passage intact (there is another version in circulation where it is patched with AUD). We have patched in from an AUD master the first 15:22 of Seastones, the tail end of Sunshine Daydream, and US Blues, all missing on the circulating MSR D. Naturally this set supplements and does not supplant the portions of this show released as parts of Dick's Picks #7, but until GDM releases the show complete, this will do the trick nicely.

Orpheum Theatre, cdr, 3 A Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com on 2/14/2002. Some tracks are from an FM source. All PreFM versions are this way. More than 30 small dropouts and glitches were repaired. Most of these problems seem to be the same as would be found in HD transfers where the buffer settings were improperly set. Regardless of whether it was a HD transfer, or a PCM transfer, it is one of the worst digital transfers I have seen. Hopefully, the work done to correct these problems makes listening a bit more enjoyable. jay Post Bertha: De-glitched by Chris Frisco at the Frisco Refinery, Oct. 2002. Thanks also to Torbj?rn Olofsson [http://tol.etree.org:8888/], to whom an immeasurable debt of gratitude is owed by many. He provided the shn sets of the SBD #2, SBD #3, and AUD sources. Finally, thanks to all of the unnamed (and unknown) people who contributed in getting these sources to this point. Compiled, edited, shn'd and seeded to etree by Conley Knott. January 11, 2004 * Source update: Jack Warner reports the AUD on this seed does not derive from Hugh Barroll's tape. Jack bases this on his personal comparison between Hugh's source and this AUD. -- Conley (1.19.2004)

The first sounds like it was from a different source than the second set. The channels were reversed on the first set, as well. The channels were corrected prior to processing. Because of the difference in sound quality between the first and second sets, they were processed separately. The objective, as well as improving the sonic quality, was to match the sound from set to set, as close as possible. The last 20 minutes of the show is patched from a Soundboard/Audience source and was also processed separately. The patches on d1t01 and d3t03 were done by others prior to receiving the show. CD mastering by slip, EAC > FLAC by Joe Jupille. Notes: - Really nice tape of a show that is a pleasure to listen to. - Patch material was provided by Willy Munder's seed of this show, shnid 9829. This included the first 3:14 of the opening track, everything from the final reverb note of Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie through 0:46 of On the Road Again (likely tape flip from the master), and everything from about ten seconds after the end of Oh Boy (i.e., about three minutes of tuning and end-of-show talk). That seed is pretty good but is plagued by intermittent static (which you can hear in the first second or so of the emcee talk on t01). This master strikes me as better overall, in any case.

I could not remove this. Some other funny sounds in the song like at 5:59, I compared these to the AUD and they were on there as well. - Eyes of the World had many issues at 3:06. I got it down to a slight crackle. There were dropouts and pops here. - Disc 2 and 3 are seemless, the split of Drums and Space was done on a natural fadeout. - Disc 3 had about 70 dropouts throughout. They were all 0:00.030 in length. They were seemless when I took them out. - Liberty was missing FOB-AUD source used

USAir Arena, cdr, 3 A- Schoeps MK4,AUD>DAT>CDR Edits preformed with Cool Edit Pro: D1t01(Iko Iko) static both from :38 thru :39 , :53 , 1:04 thru 1:05 , 1:49 all un fixable, I did try to use a noise reduction and it didn't sound right with it applied so I left it alone. Also on the same track after the song is over @ 8:06 thru 8:09 many tiny drop outs un fixable as well. I zoomed in on the wav and they are on both channels. D2t05(Estimated Prophet) Pop left channel @ 6:11 replace with right channel , click @ 10:56 removed with FFT filter Low Pass 4000 Hz. I could have patched in on the static spots but it would hinder the quality of the SBD recording. Did I miss anything? After pulling all my hair out on this one to try to get it right. I think I did the best I could.

Delta Center, cdr, 2 A not bad for 1995 There are some problems with the recording at the end of "That Would Be Something" and the beginning of "Drums". Sounds like it could be a mic overloading. Also, during various points of the second set, soundboard static is audible. It is most noticeable at the end of "Foolish Heart" and at the end of "Sugar Magnolia". These flaws are believed to exist on all circulating copies.
