??/??/39 , The Beat Generation, Compilation  3  Wav    a three-cd box set featuring recordings from titans including william s. burroughs, allen ginsberg, and kenneth rexroth, the beat generation works in tandem with rhino's earlier compilation the jack kerouac collection to paint a definitive audio portrait of one of the seminal literary uprisings of the 20th century. because the beats were so heavily influenced by jazz, their work ranks among the most rhythmic and lyrical in all of literature and lends itself perfectly to spoken word recordings; kerouac's insistence that beat stood for "beatific" aside, the name's musical implications are undeniable, with the writers' free-flowing, improvisational wordplay -- what ginsberg dubbed "spontaneous bop prosody" -- echoing the radical innovations of charlie parker and dizzy gillespie. the set also charts the beats' own influence on musicians spanning from lambert, hendricks and ross to perry como to tom waits, at the same time embracing kindred spirits including ken nordine, lord buckley, and lenny bruce; the inclusion of some of the material is questionable at best -- the box would probably work as effectively at two discs instead of three -- but in recapturing the singular spirit of its time, the beat generation is an essential document of cool.

??/??/70 , Bellevue Community College, Bellevue  1  NTSC    in 1970, charles bukowski was a prolific poet and short story writer, but he had yet to gain a sizable following for his work outside of his hometown of los angeles, ca, and it would be several years before he would attain the underground literary celebrity he enjoyed in the 1980s and '90s. when bellevue community college in bellevue, wa, invited bukowski to perform a reading, it was only the fourth time the author had read his work in public; a two-man student camera crew was on hand to record the event using a primitive portable video system, and bukowski at bellevue is one of the few visual documents of bukowski reading his rough-hewn, streetwise poetry for an audience.

??/??/96 , In Their Own Voices: A Century of Recorded Poetry, Compilation  4  Wav  OOP - Top Notch!!!  the audience for the four-cd box set in their own voices: a century of recorded poetry is limited, but for those that want to delve deep into this collection, which features poets reading their own work and there are over 120 poems included, will find this immensely rewarding. beginning with an 1890 recording of walt whitman reading "america," the set runs through many of the greatest poets of the next 100 years, who all have representative, if not their most famous, poems included. there are some omissions ? t.s. eliot was not included, for instance ? but there has never been a set like this compiled before, nor is it likely to happen again. in their own voices is a treasure for poetry and spoken word devotees.
