Second Black Session for Interpol, in this small venue 'La Boule Noire' in Paris. This was broadcasted, as always, on 'France Inter' radio, a French national radio.
All songs except Roland were aired live; Roland was aired a few days later.
A strange buzz (around 8kHz) sound is audible during the first five minutes on the recording. Since it only appears after one minute or so and for only a quite short time (it stops at ~5'), my guess is that it was in the broadcast.

1 SBD -> KEXP DAB (see below) -> Total Recorder SE PCM Capture (44.1kHz, 16-bit) ->CDWave (for track splitting) -> FLAC(8) |
Notes: This is a decent recording. KEXP distributes their FM broadcasts online via WMP and a
1.4Mb/s uncompressed audio stream (WAV format). No packets were harmed in the broadcast and
capture of this show. There are a few pops and such here and there, but nothing major; I
decided to leave them in rather than run the tracks through any type of pop/click filter. |

This is one from the short 1983 tour and if you like Japanese Whispers,
it includes one of the three times that Lament was played in the 1980s.
It wasn't revived (as far as I know) until 1990 and hasn't been played since
then (again, as far as I know) - The Garden Party gig August 1990 where
I saw it was great though! The quality is much better than some Pornography
tour stuff I've heard and hopefully I've got rid of the SBEs that blighted my last torrent!
This concert was a warm up gig for the Elephant Fayre in Cornwall.
Unfortunately the beginning of Figurehead and end of At Night were cut by the original taper.

The London '96 show is a good show. It was a private release show for WMS, so the audience is just family, friends, record people, etc... The setlist on the DVD is the main set from the show, so it's all WMS songs (no encores on the DVD). Here's a link:

Great audience show from the '98 Festival tour. SDS cuts in and out at the beginning a couple of times,

1 Digital broadcast (cable) > SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro > Goldwave > WAV > Flac Frontend > Flac |
Twice a month, French radio France Inter broadcasts the "Black Sessions". Hosted by Bernard Lenoir, who should be considered as the French equivalent of John Peel (RIP), this show features live sessions by new or famous rock and pop bands. Lenoir, who has followed The Cure's career since their early days, has never managed to get the band into his show for various reasons, mostly scheduling incompatibilities. Twelve years after the very first "Black Sessions", The Cure finally manages to play for this respected show.
The band played 18 songs during this 90-minute session. Two of them, "Us or them" and "Alt.end" didin't make it to the broadcast.
There were introduction and conclusion comments (in French) by Bernard Lenoir, but I had to cut them to fit the show onto a single 80-minute CD. NO music has been cut. Lenoir also adds some comments between some of the tracks, but has enough taste to stop right before the next track begins.
Technical notes
Even though I own a sound card that is 24-bit-capable, I'm not familiar with that kind of recording. I decided to try to do my best with 16-bit recording and an all-digital lineup. France Inter, the radio which provides the Black Sessions, broadcasts (among other means) over digital cable. So I used a Toslink cable to link the digital output of my cable box to the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro inside my PC. I recorded the tracks onto my hard drive and edited them with Goldwave, which is the software I'm the most comfortable with for audio. Files were Flac'ed using the Flac Frontend.
WARNING
At 1:38 during Before Three, you'll hear 4 beeps. Every hour France Inter sends these beeps over the air, whatever the broadcast is (talk show, ads, music...). I don't think there is a way of removing them nicely, without tampering with the music. I hope you won't be too annoyed by these parasite sounds. |
