Makisupa Policeman * earliest known versions ^ w/Nancy on vocals *notes* While not an exceptional recording by any means, this is surely some great early Phish captured on tape. Despite the distant sound, the overall sound of the tape was quite good considering the age. While the source info is not "nailed", below is the email that led me to the tape: An etree friend has come across a cassette that he believes to be from this show. If in fact this show is from this date, it would definitely be the first Wilson and Golgi known (supplanting the current first known for those 2 which is 10/15/1986). My friend has actually not listened to this show, but he lives in San Diego and got it from a guy he works with who was at Goddard College in 1986 (kind of an odd coincidence I would say) since his coworker approached him knowing my friend was into Phish. Rather than paraphrase everything told to me, here is exactly what my friend told me about this tape/show: Tom [his coworker] told me he wasn't sure of the exact date, but that he did go to the show. He said that it was in a barn. Actually, he said when he went there opened up the wrong door and was on or near the stage and was looking at the whole crowd staring back at him before he went around to the entrance. Anyway, he tells me that it was in October 1986 at Goddard College so I can only assume it is the October 12,1986 Haybarn Theater, Goddard College, Plainfield, VT show. Tom got it from Del Martin and the only information that I have is that Del gave him a copy of the tape (which was taped off of Del's recording). I have a copy of Tom's tape. Tom said he is pretty sure that Del had a 4-track and was recording with 2 mics. Other than that I don't know any other info except a setlist or partial setlist he gave me which is: Golgi-(first time?)> Slave to the Traffic Light, Wilson (first time?), Haley's Comet w/ Nancy, Possum, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, Makisupa Policeman. Since I don't have a good tape player and I don't want to jack it up by listening to it. Can you or do you know anybody that can put it in flac or shn format for digital transfer? I really don't want to get hopes up too high because I haven't listened to it, but I think that it should be okay. I didn't ask what type of precautions he took with this tape over the last 20 years. ENJOY! Transfer, mastering, FLAC16 by Marmar 07/09/2005

I'm not sure why there are so many of them. Either the person who did the DAT master didn't want so much space between songs or there is something else missing. d1t06 2:04, d1t07 4:04, d1t09 5:21 d2t01 0:01, d2t07 0:00.8, d2t09 8:17, d2t12 0:00.6 d3t03 4:49, d3t04 5:17 -In d1t10 there was a high pitched oscillating sound from 0:12-0:16, d2t02 from 1:43-1:46, and d2t09 3:13-3:13 which I could not remove without disrupting the quality of the recording. This may be feedback...? -I noticed throughout the tracks that the L and R waves were exactly identical with the exception of the R channel having lower levels than the left. -Tape flips: between d2t02-d2t03 (fade in...fade out) -There is some light warbling in d2t06 at 2:42. 01/27/88  Gallagher's - VT  CDR  Phish 1-27-1988 AKA 1-30-1988 Gallagher's Waitsfield VT. This show is dated 1-30-1988 on Phish.net as well as on my dat. This show is dated 1-27-1988 in the Phish Companion so I elected to seed it using this date. SOURCE:SBD>CASS(0)>DAT DAT>SHN:Tascam DA-20>COAX>WAV>COOL EDIT>CDWAV>SHN Via MKW.These SHN files are seekable in your SHNamp. I have included both shn and wav md5s. This show has been on a journey through the Cool Edit. Using the Noise Reduction Feature, I have removed 2/3 of the hiss from this copy. There is still a little bit of hiss, but it comes and goes in waves instead of a constant annoyance. Before I did this, the hiss was over the music, now it is behind it. The music was left completely unaltered in this process. When the show was originally recorded, the analog taper kept reseting their levels louder and louder to the point where there is some vibration. No real distortion, just some annoying vibration so don't crank these full throddle.I tried various tools to try and fix it.I could not get it to my liking so I chose to leave it alone. About 2 minutes of Lizards is missing. It is a very strange time for an analog flip, but if this taper used 2 tapes for a 3 set show, the timing matches up. This is a fabulous show.If I had to give it a grade for quality... If it was recorded after 1993 it would be a "C". Since it was recorded in 1988 and I was able to remove most of the hiss, I give it an "A--". This show features one of the most humorous moments ever caught on tape! It started when the crowd chanted for Fee as Fishman took the stage during HYHU. Fish sounded perplexed, and remarked that he doesn't sing Fee, but Trey and Page started the song up anyway and left Fishman on the spot. He tried his best and got through the first verse before falling apart during the chorus. *note* There is some distortion on the set...it starts durring the fishman part and continues to the end. I lowered the volume to lessen the crackle, but it's still distorted. This is pretty much for historical purposes only...and it is pretty darn funny to boot!

Patches from the Sony mic source occur in the following places: Approx. 55 seconds into Landlady there was a dropout (patched for 5 seconds). After Funky Bitch there was a cut/dropout in the crowd noise (patched until first notes of Stash). Following Lawn Boy there was a tapeflip and the Tweezer intro was cut (patched from first notes of Tweezer for about 9 seconds). During Lizards, the Nak source was cut right after the "woah, woah" section, before the quiet building section (patched until the end of show). I smoothed out level changes in Stash, Tube, and McGrupp > HYHU with vector based volume curves. The following mastering processes were used: Waves REQ 2-band, rolloff at 42Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compression, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Waves L2. The audio was downsampled to 44.1 with the 192KHz Stereo Resampler, and rendered to 16-bits with UVHR22 dithering. For the tuning and first minute of Buried Alive I adjusted volume (gain from the FA770) and bass levels (BBE lo contour) to make it somewhat listenable, there is a tiny crossfade at the switch point to make it smooth. The tape flip right after Coil before Tweezer was quick, you can't tell it's there with the crossfade in place. Cavern Comments: This show, a benefit for the Flynn Theatre, featured many debuts, including Scent of a Mule, If I Could, Wolfman's Brother, Julius, I Wanna Be Like You, and the full Down with Disease. THe show kicked off with one a cappella line of My Hometown. Buried Alive through Suzy Greenberg featured The Giant Country Horns: Mike Gallick on baritone sax, Carl "Geerz" Gerhard on trumpet, Dave "The Truth" Grippo on alto sax, Don Glasgo on trombone, Chris Petermon on tenor sax, and Joseph Sommerville, Jr., on trumpet. Cavern, which contained the old, alternate lyrics, also featured Gerhard. Magilla (first since March 25, 1993 or 72 shows) was played slightly differently than most verisons, with more of a shuffle beat. LIsten as Trey updated the crowd on scores of the NCAA tournament games.

Source Notes: I'm not 100% sure on the source of these discs but this is what the person I got them from thought they were, although they weren't positive. This is the only source I've seen circulating so it is probably true. Some have a Lunatec V2 listed as a preamp but I didn't include that in the lineage because I don't have any real evidence to support this. In any case, the show sounds pretty good and seems to be problem free so I hope we can look past the uncertain source info. Tech Notes: I extracted the cds as a range and resplit the tracks using CDWAV. The EAC logs for each disc are included. There was one fade between discs that I removed. There was enough overlapping music allowing me to join the 2 tracks together and resplit them without any fade. There was also a fade that eliminated some crowd noise between the second set and encore that I left in. I also added fades at the beginning and end of each set in soundforge. No other processing was done on my part except for running the fileset through shntool in order to remove SBE's that existed due to the editing done above. ph is missed

08/15/96  Plattsburgh Air Force Base - NY  CDR  This disc contains the Soundcheck, flatbed jam & a filler of Dear Mrs Reagan - the info is as follows: August 15, 1996 Plattsburgh, NY Clifford Ball Source: AUD1 Nak300 > DAT > XLII-S Transfer: HK TD4400 > Steinberg VSL2020 > Wavelab > WAV > FLAC 1 Sound Check (32:03) Filler 2 Attack on the Bass - Sound Check '97 (6:36) Notes: Turn this one up and it's like being in the lot for the soundcheck to the Clifford Ball. The stage is not close by, but you can hear the mad jam going down. This is the last half hour of the sound check. _________________________ Phish Plattsburgh Air Force Base Plattsburgh, NY 8/17/96 @ 3:30 am "The Clifford Ball Flatbed Jam" (excerpt) 13:39 ?mic > Sony D6 > Master DAT > Cass/1 > CDR > EAC > Soundforge 6.0 > FLAC Tape to cdr transfer done with an HHB 830-burnit stand alone burner. Notes: This excerpt of the infamous Clifford Ball faltbed jam was taped on the fly by Guy Gimbrone (RIP) and Justin Clutter of Roscoe, IL. Microphones used are unknown at this time because when Guy made this tape for me we were not in the habit of listing sources. One must be warned that this is a mobile recording with Guy holding the microphones and Justin carrying the deck as they followed the flatbed, dodging cops on horseback and fans. The microphones did get bumped and you will hear it. The only edits I made were to raise the volume of the first 51 seconds where levels were set low and then lower the volume of the next 13 seconds where levels were high, the fade-in to begin existed on the source tape. The excerpt ends abruptly and I left it that way without a fade because that is where the flatbed started moving faster and in Guy and Justin's efforts to keep up, the microphones detached from the deck. This is all was that was taped by Guy and Justin. Enjoy! Seed created on 2/19/04 and dedicated to the memory of Guy Gimbrone (2/6/69 - 9/9/03), my best friend whom I miss dearly. _________________________________ Phish or Trey Anastasio or Trey and Tom Marshall or Bivouac??? 4 track recording circa early 1980's 1. Dear Mrs. Reagen 2:00 This is one of the more obscure items I have had in my collection. It was a filler on a tape I got from a Vermonter in the early to mid 1990's. Maybe it was the White Tape, or Bivouac Jaun, I'm not sure. I used to look for old and rare recordings back then. Back when rare meant rare and you hand wrote tapes lists to send via snail mail. Some of you might not know that music was traded on cassettes back then ;) I have never seen any info about this nor have I stumbled onto anyone else who has this little gem. I decided to put it online for a couple reasons. I figured some people might enjoy it for one. More inportantly I was hoping to find an upgrade or prompt others to post some gems that are as rare as this. Some of you might not have even ever heard this tune, or heard of it. It was played very little in the very beginnings of Phishs career. This must be a four track home recording. I also know there were different version recorded of the same song. So if you have any info PLEASE hit me up at cleantone hotmail com to let me know. Keven? I would also appreciate an upgrade, or maybe share some other very rare recordings with me. Thanks in advance and enjoy!

I tried to make this transition as easy on the ears as possible, making the change as close to a "dead spot" as possible. The only "glitch" so to speak on this copy was a fast dropout in David Bowie just before the fast triplet notes at the end (approximately @ 10:29.856). Doing a time based edit (based on the time signature) I did the edit to the best of my abilities, and although it is not perfect it is better than hearing the "crunch" of the dropout....Other than that, this is a flawless representation of the concert.... 08/17/96  Plattsburgh Air Force Base - NY  CDR  PHiSH 8-17-96 The Clifford Ball Day 2 Plattsburgh Air Force Base Plattsburgh, NY Source: DSBD -> DAT (99% of the show) Old Home Place: Pre-FMSBD DAT PYITE: 1st 1:05 DAUD DAT Suzie Greenberg: 1st second taken from DAUD DAT Slave Source: FMSBD Broadcast -> DAT -> CD -> EAC Transfer: All work was done on "Reba" which is the name for my DAW. DAT's transfered by TASCAM DA-40 -> Behringer DDX3216 Digital Mixer -> MARK OF THE UNICORN 896 HDR -> Dual XENON @ 800mHz PC...and a whole buch of other stuff. All Editing done in the digital domain using Steinberg Wavelab 4.0f, CubaseVST/32 5.1 **NOTES** I previously seeded this show in 2000, and after reading some of the user comments I was compelled to do a re-seed of this show. After listening real carefully and comparing the SBD portion to 3 different FMSBD sources, I have concluded that the soundboard portion is "flat" or runs slower than the FM source. So, from the point where it changes in PYITE > Golgi & all of disc 3 I took tuning measurements and discovered the DSBD was flat by 20cents. The pitch correction was done in Wavelab using the highest quality settings possible. Then PYITE was missing the fist minute from the DAT I had due to the taper "patching in" to the SBD feed from the Pre-FM source. The missing portion of Suzie was also repaired using the DAUD DAT I got my hands on. All edits were performed AFTER the DC Offset was removed from all material. The Slave came from Morgan Bell, who was nice enough to send me the FM source to use. The levels of Slave had to be adjusted to match the DSBD material. The Slave was edited in using exacting methods I would rather not go into here...the main changes are level reduction, DC Offset removal, and slight dithering. So here it is...after 80+hrs of listening and relistening, the best source available for this show IMHO. For many pacific northwesterner's and other phans who made the trip, this is a long sought after show. It was one of the best of the tour, and extremely high energy. The band as well as many phans had quite an evening crossing the border and this is reflected during multiple show narratives (listen to makisupa and mid-highway blues). All four members of Phish played keyboards/synthesizers (with occasional vocal forays), sitting on the back of an eighteen-wheeler, which was parked near the entrance to the concert field. There was a small lighting rig. Earlier in the day there were a few thousand rave-style fliers circulating ambiguously advertising a "Disco" featuring MC Neoncellgap, DJ LeMore LaLip, etc, and you can hear some announcements to that effect at the end of the set. Also of note : brief footage of this set can be seen during the film "Bittersweet Motel", during the Great Went "2001" montage. recording note by taper Jon Weber : This is the entire set. For a while now, a partial version (the final 15+ minutes) of this set has been circulating in SHN format. Props to Adam and Justin for getting that out there. I've included the source listing for their source (which was used for track 2) above. Since I feel a little guilty for not circulating *my* source sooner, there are a few things worth noting. First, I was indeed rolling just as the set started. One of my best friends was working for DryGoods at the time, and she tipped me off to exactly where the latenight set was taking place.... so I was standing there with my equipment, waiting for them to start, before any crowd had shown up. Problem is, there were two subsequent "flaws" that prevented me from circulating this tape since then : 1.. the aforementioned DryGoods friend walks up to me early in the set, with her friend (now Paluska's wife), and I'm standing there with mic's on my glasses and wires hanging off of me. I try to play it off cool, as you'll unfortunately hear my attempt on the tape. I felt a little guilty getting the latenight info from her, and then Shushing her for taping purposes. Fortunately there's only about 20 seconds total of conversation. A nice phishstorical footnote is that this same friend is the one whose hearty laugh is featured at the end of the studio version of "Twist". 2... after the show, I got back to my tent and we were checking out Radio WENT. It seemed that they were rebroadcasting the main stage show, so I immediately hooked up my DAT and started recording. A classic stoner move, it turned out that I erased over the final ten minutes of the Disco Set, rendering my source Incomplete! So, for the longest time, and recalling that I saw a tape stand show up about halfway through the show.... I knew there was another source that would eventually surface and could provide the ending to my recording which started at the beginning. I spliced the two sources during a moment of audience applause 39+ minutes into the set -- I made no attempt to EQ or compress anything to match the sources, you will probably notice a difference, but no music was lost in the splice. Thanks to Phish for all the great memories and Went.... Jon Weber - Sept 2003 transfer notes : EAC steps were necessary due to a degrading master DAT (Darryl saved us with an archived CDR). As now, it's as pure as it can be - so enjoy. seeded via bt.etree.org, september 2004 by mudderbug original seed had bad edit on track 2, it cut 45 seconds before the end of the set. 04/29/05  Tom Lee Park - TN  CDR  Trey Anastasio April 29, 2005 Beale Street Music Festival Memphis, TN Please Read the General Notes and Disclaimer: 1. At the beginning of Get Back on the Train, I informed the chick in front of me I had on a mic. As you will hear, she proceeds to tell me to get away, and not to "shush" her. I never said be quiet, I just asked her not to yell at me. She kept turning around and yelling right into my face. I was baffled, I don't quite understand why she had to turn around to yell. Everyone else around me was aware I had a mic, and with the exception of this girl & her boyfriend, was curtious enough to limit their conversation, or to move away. I didn't even have to explain this. Anytime someone said anything directly to me "Can I borrow your lighter?", all I had to do was simply point at the mic, and they didn't speak to me the rest of the evening. Simple enough you would think. I did have to answer several questions throughout the show, but people got the idea. 2. Also note that it monsooned for five hours leading up to this show. The acoustic set was precipitated by the need to uncover the equipment, and get the sound ready, which you will here was still screwed up for the first part of Night Speaks. It was also quite windy, but it is not too noticable. 3. Trey mentions reading reviews online presumably after the Virginia show, and responds. 4. All this being said, the show was fun, the music was generally good, and I look forward to good things to come. Good things come to those who wait.
