Acoustic Masterpieces - The Esher Demos
Esher, UK |
1 cdr |
|
|
This recording was done at George Harrison's house in late may of 68.
It's John, George and Paul. This recording is of some the tracks they had written in India.
From the sound of this recording they must have been having a very good time.. Perhaps some very good Hashish??? Whatever, it never impaired their playing at all.
This is my favorite of all Beatles recordings. It can't be called an outtake recording, just John, Paul, and George sitting around and
jamming together.
As the insert says, this is about as close to an Beatles "unplugged" as you'll ever find.
EXCELLENT HOME DEMOS (2 GENS AWAY FROM MASTER)
RECORDED AT GEORGE'S PLACE! 1968 |
These are the same songs which are included on the White Album outtakes. |

seeder's notes:
Blues Surprises sbd coll. Vol.1
(w/Muddy Waters, B.B.King, Big Joe Williams, Champion Jack Dupree & more)
Going through my collection I, found some very rare bits and pieces .....
I felt that these should fit very well in my first Blues compilation!
With one exception, I?ve included here everything I have of this short sets!
Most stuff is copied from masters or 1stgeneration tapes...
The quality varies from very nice to excellent, a CD from this stuff will be very listenable!! Please keep in mind that these are very old recordings!
(thanks DocTinker) |
Somehow, I seem to have unfortunately misplaced the Champion Jack Dupree selections off of this... |

The Gaslight tape is an absolute 'must have' to any serious collection. It has been available as a quasi-legitimate European LP for many years, in several different packages. There are tapes that float around that are better quality than the issued pieces. There are a few different CD packages / manufacturers available. As all forms of this recording are very good quality, Don't worry about which package to acquire. Most all have the same material.

Renaldo & Clara Soundtrack (Les Kokay Remaster)
Various, Various |
2 cdr |
|
|
Notes from Les Kokay:
"As it is 25 years since Renaldo & Clara screened, I though it might be nice to give the stereo soundtrack a wider circulation (I hinted about it here, a while back). Also since Dylan is on his way to NZ soon it would be aprropriate to offer a rare gem back to the rest of the world.
The Renaldo and Clara s/t has been available on a couple of bootlegs for some time.
1. Renaldo & Clara (Norriaa) - a single CD from the film s/t (stereo), but in very poor quality and misses out some important tracks.
2. Renaldo & Clara (reference recording) 2CD - actually 2CDR, sourced from a video of the TV broadcast, so mono and also poor quality. A good selection of tracks.
These have both been re-bootlegged under different labels & covers.
I've recently remastered my own tape of the stereo film soundtrack to a 2CDR myself, and the result is significantly better quality than any of the bootlegs (IMHO). I had some difficulty about which tracks not to include. I eventually decided not to include any of the dialoge of the film (2) above included a couple of the David Blue monologues. I didn't include any of the non-dylan background music (moonlight sonata, the chipin waltz, the roadie plays, ect.) and I missed out any music that I simply don't like listening to repeatedly (for example: In the Morning, Kaddish, God and Mama, Wilkomen).
For technical reasons I missed out Suzanne (Baez) and South Coast (Elliot) as these sounded very poor beside the other tracks. Hurricane I've edited to remove most of the dialogue, but still keep the flow of the song. BTW this Hurricane is acutally the out-take with the 'robbing the bodies' line, and not a concert performance. All the other music is included in the order of the film. It is all nice wide stereo exept for the opening track which for some reason is amost mono. The sound quality is not perfect, but it is much better than anything that has circulated before." |

This is the correct date for the show that's often mislabeled 12/73 KSAN radio broadcast - the air date was 12/02/73 but it was recorded on 10/31/73. This was recorded shortly after the Wailers were kicked off the Sly & The Family Stone tour for actually drawing more attention than Sly. They were stranded and the K-SAN station booked them at the Matrix Club as well as giving them this Radio time.
Lineup: Bob Marley: Guitar and Vocals
Peter Tosh: Rhythm Guitar and Vocal
Earl 'Wire' Lindo: Keyboards
Aston 'Family Man' Barrett: Bass
Carlton Barrett: Drums
"Walk The Proud Land" is the same song as "Rude Boy", with slightly different text written by Bunny Wailer, but here Bob is singing his lyrics version, so it's called "Rude Boy". After "Rastaman Chant" there's the instrumental jam of "Keep The Faith". |

The Yvette Acoustic Tape 1976
Recorded in one of Bob's girlfriend's houses this tape includes many songs that Bob never released and some that would become some of his most famous classics.
The mood is really relaxed and Bob seems to be in a really great mood often laughing out loud at some of the things he is singing.
He then gets a bit more serious with the deeply religious God of All Ages where he is accompanied by the heartbeat rhythm of a bongo drum.
Rumors is also another great highlight featuring some fantastic vocal form.
Bob on this tape also composes some of jammin as well as a very early rendition of Easy Skanking.
He also chats a bit between songs about opening a hospital in Ethiopia.
The tape closes out with Oh What a Day, which is a long very early version of what would become Misty Morning.

Some crucial info on this great set from a member of the westcoastacidandpsychedelia Yahoo group
Here is my current hypothesis: Erma Franklin was playing the weekend with her own band,
but used the Electric Flag horn section. One of the three nights (4.19-20-21.68), the entire band
showed up to play a guest set, and that is what is immortalized here. There are no stage
announcements or other identifiers, so I have to go on what I can hear.
CD1 and CD2 are quite different although the sound quality is identical,
leading me to assume they are different sets from the same show.
CD1
1-UPTIGHT OUTA SIGHT >
2-DAY TRIPPER >
3-DRIVIN' WHEEL
4-DRIVIN' WHEEL Cont.
5-INSTRUMENTAL (For the record:
Track #5 (on the EF set) is The Theme,
a Miles Davis tune that he often ended his sets with.)
6-GOING DOWN SLOW
7-BIG BOSS MAN
This is definitely the Electric Flag. Not only is Mike Bloomfield's guitar recognizable,
he can be heard talking off mike at the end of track 4.
I believe the lineup is
Mike Bloomfield-lead guitar
Terry Clements-tenor sax
Virgil Gonsalves-baritone sax, flute
Stemsy Hunter-alto sax
Marcus Doubleday-trumpet
Herbie Rich-organ (possibly some baritone sax on 5)
Harvey Brooks-bass
Buddy Miles-drums, lead vocals (tracks 1,2,3)
Nick Gravenites-lead vocals (tracks 6,7).
Although this is all over the map, like every Electric Flag recording or performance,
the sound is better than any other Flag live tape that I have heard, and its a great
sampler of the broad range of sounds that the band could cover, from blues to jazz to soul.
Track 5 is a long jazzy instrumental with a familiar refrain. There is no organ for some of it,
so I have assumed that Herbie Rich has switched to baritone. I am assuming that the above
was the Flag horn lineup, but the horn section has always been hard to nail down for certain.
CD2
1-DR. FEELGOOD (Erma Franklin)
2-I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE > MERCY > TELL MAMA > CHAIN OF FOOLS (Erma Franklin)
3-PIECE OF MY HEART(Erma Franklin)
4-HOLD ON I'M COMING (Erma Franklin)
These four tracks feature Erma, a small backing group and a horn section. The guitar player is
definitely not Bloomfield, and the rhythm section does not sound like Miles and Brooks.
There is a little bit of organ, so perhaps Herbie Rich is sitting in. The musicians know the tunes
but seem underrehearsed. The horns are playing pretty conventional charts.
In the introduction to track 1, Erma says "this song is for Mike and Kathy, who helped us while
we got it together on the houseboat." The Marin/WestPole/Ron Polte crowd (Quicksilver, The Flag, etc)
often used houseboats as cheap housing, so it makes sense that Erma and her band may have been
based there prior to the shows.
I have no way of saying that the Flag horns were part of her group. Maybe they weren't, and the Flag
just played anyway. Still, Erma was only playing periodic gigs at the time, so while I can see her bringing
out a band, or hiring players she had worked with before, it seems plausible that you would hire local horn players.
Right before Piece of My Heart, Erma says "this is for the woman who's making it all happen with this song"
or words to that effect, which I take to be a reference to Janis Joplin. Of course, Big Brother had not released
Cheap Thrills at this time, but they were already playing it in concert, so the buzz was probably around.
5-EVERYDAY I HAVE THE BLUES>
6-KILLING FLOOR//
These last two tracks are neither Erma nor the Flag. This sounds like a Carousel post-show jam session.
The lineup for track 5 is guitar/organ/bass/drums. It may be the same band that backed Erma,
but the guitarist sounds bluesier. More likely (based on the sound) the same rhythm section and a different
guitarist. The vocalist is quite familiar, but not particularly exceptional. He definitely sounds a like an SF
White Boy, although a fairly adequate one (I don't think its Steve Miller). Perhaps members of Frumious
Bandersnatch or Santana (the other acts on the bill) were part of this.
Other musicians join in for track 6. There is a second vocalist, mostly going "oh yeah oh yeah" etc,
and I believe I detect Buddy Miles inimitable stylings, but it could be just someone who sounds like him.
The track cuts off in mid-jam.
The week before at the Carousel (4.14.68), there had been an unscheduled Sunday show and jam session
featuring Quicksilver and numerous other musicians. The tape circulates, and since Gary Duncan jokes
about Easter Sunday, it makes it easy to reliably date the show. All this points to another Sunday jam
session, so if I had to guess I would pick Sunday, 4.21.68 for the date of this show.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

This three day run at The Carousel Ballroom was a feast for horn section fans, featuring Pacific Gas & Electric, Electric Flag and Don Ellis and His Orchestra. Due to popular demand, a matinee show was added. Although Electric Flag was the headliner for these shows, they opted to go on second to allow Don Ellis and His Orchestra to close the shows.
These sets feature the original lineup, toward the end of founder, Michael Bloomfield's, involvement. He would depart shortly thereafter, leaving the band to struggle onward for several months before disbanding. However, at this point the band was full of fire and highly influential. Their unique blend of soul, rock and blues, punctuated by horns, didn't go unnoticed. Later that year, Al Kooper would create a similar band, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Chicago Transit Authority would also use this formula, both achieving far greater commercial success. However, it was Electric Flag that created the template and who were the most diverse musically. The incendiary guitar playing by Bloomfield during this time period set a level that few (if any) other white guitar players could match.
The afternoon show was a relatively short affair with Electric Flag relegated to a half hour set. Apparently, Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites were late to arrive and surprisingly, the rest of the group begins. The group uses this number to warm up their chops, while waiting for their frontmen to arrive. Due to Bloomfield's absence, this is a unique version that features extended sax solos and extra improvisation. This is a mix in progress until close to the third minute, and there are also some pitch problems evident as the tape speed varies throughout the song. Bloomfield arrives onstage during the last two minutes, but sits out until the next number.
After several minutes of getting Bloomfield tuned up and situated, they tear into the old traditional, "Milk Cow Blues." Nick Gravenites takes lead vocals and with no warm-up necessary, Bloomfield immediately tears it up on this funky blues tune.
Giving Bloomfield another chance to display his extraordinary technique, they next ease into a slow smoldering rendition of B.B. King's "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," a song they never released themselves. Following a two minute guitar solo intro section, Buddy Miles takes over on vocals. Following the verses, the group eases the dynamics way down low, letting Bloomfield solo in an unusually delicate and tasteful manner, before building it back up.
They close the set with their first single, "Groovin' Is Easy," Gravenites again taking over on lead vocals. The big horn section sound, swirling organ and Miles' fatback drumming kick this into high gear. In this mix the separation is very audible and one can clearly hear the nuances that Bloomfield is adding as a support player. As a bonus, Bloomfield lets it rip by adding a demented psychedelic guitar solo near the end. |

Four Men & a Dog made a name for themselves with their eclectic and vivacious blend of traditional Irish music with a wide spectrum of other genres, including rap, Southern rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, polka, country swing, and even salsa. Barking Mad, their debut album from Cross Border Media, snagged an award for Album of the Year from Folk Roots magazine in 1991, marking the first time that an Irish group had ever won the prize.
Four Men & a Dog's music is enthusiastic and infectious. During live shows it is also spontaneous, since band members do not rehearse. The group emerged in 1990 with a high-energy performance during the Belfast Folk Festival. Its name stems from the nickname of its original vocalist, Mick "the Black Dog" Daly. Other original members included percussionist Gino Lupari, accordionist Donal Murphy, mandolinist and banjoist Brian McGrath, and fiddler Cathal Hayden. Kevin Doherty later replaced Daly as lead singer. Around the same time, the group added James Blennerhassit on bass and Rod McVeigh on piano. Early in 1992, Conor Keane took over for Murphy on the accordion. By the following year, Gerry O'Connor stepped in for McGrath on banjo. A later lineup consisted of guitarist Arty McGlynn, Doherty, Lupari, Hayden, O'Connor, and Keane. McGlynn, who produced the group's first album, formerly played with Patrick Street, the Clancy Brothers, and Planxty. Kean hails from the group Arcady, while O'Connor previously played with Skylark.
In 1993, Shifting Gravel, the group's second album, was not greeted by critics as enthusiastically as the band's debut. Objections arose over the pop-rock undertones injected by singer/songwriter Doherty. He pulled back a bit for the following album, Doctor A's Secret Remedies from Castle Communications in 1995, and added more narrative structure to the songs rather than his previous stream-of-consciousness stylings. Castle Communications issued the group's next album, Long Roads, in 1996. Aaron Hurwitz, producer for the Band, engineered the recording at a studio run by Levon Helm in Woodstock, NY. Featured on the release are the Band's Rick Danko?, Randy Ciarlante, Garth Hudson, and Richard Bell.
This set was recorded live at Cropredy Festival 1992 (which was the first Cropredy I attended) This recording was broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Folk on 2 programme. |

James Taylor played three separate shows on 2/6/70. The "Live in Syracuse, Vol. 1" bootleg labels this as the early and late sets, though http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/digests/V4.400/D441 seems to imply that the early set does not circulate due to recording problems. Therefore, this is labeled as the middle and late set. |

James Taylor performed at Carnegie Hall on May 26th and May 27th in 1974.
These two shows were probably the final two shows of JT's four-week U.S. tour to promote "Walking Man." The DIR Concert Network had permission to tape both shows and it is not clear whether this version represents one of the shows or a combination of both shows. A shortened version of the show was broadcast by the King Biscuit Flower Hour (KBFH) on 6/30/74 and it may also circulate under that date or the date July 16, 1974. |

Janis Joplin
Blow All My Blues Away
various dates, 1962 through 1970
This set of archival recordings lets us witness the formation of arguably the most powerful and expressive voice in rock history. From the earliest known performances in the small bars of Texas to the first sessions with Big Brother to her mesmerizing live shows, Janis never left behind her raw roots. She drew upon them to impel emotional performances as if by exposing her pain she gained power over her past and transformed it into a gift. In these newly sourced pearls, we can hear as never before the birth and fast burning flame of Janis Joplin.
Included are outtakes and unreleased songs from the 1968 "Cheap Thrills" studio sessions, demos for the 1969 Kozmic Blues album and vast improvements on all existing vintage (1962-65) live recordings. The vintage recordings, in particular, are wonderful and although we
had some of this material from the long out of print "Janis" movie soundtrack vinyl release, this collection has 39 (!) tracks recorded
between 1962-65 including the ubiquitous "Typewriter Tapes" made by Jorma. The final CD finally unchains the urgent expression and lets it be heard in a complete Big Brother concert from 1967. Sit down by your window, put this set on, and blow all your blues away.

Playing to a sold out 1500 seat opera house, Jason Mraz brought back the music to his self proclaimed home-town for music, San Diego. Playing several older songs, as well as a healthy collection from his Elektra Records debut "Waiting for my rocket to come", mraz and his band played a very solid 2.5+ hour set. The entire night was filmed by video crews, but particular attention was payed to the song 'The Remedy' of which live footage from this show would be part of the music video for that song. |

This is the often talked about session that Jimi recorded with the members of Traffic (Steve Winwood's band at the time). This is an excellent quality recording from OH BOY...JOIN THE DE LUXE WAY. As the CD arts tells you "This session was recorded at an unknown place in the late 60's." |

Notes claim this is April 1960, but Jimmy mentions Mother's Day, so best guess is May 8, 1960. In addition, it is known that Mike Seeger recorded a Jimmy Martin set on May 8, 1960, and four songs (Sophronie and Who'll Sing for Me, not included here and Hit Parade of Love and Foggy Old London ) was released on Thrill Jockey's "Don't Cry For Me."
It is likely that J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams play on this set. |

Circulates misdated as 05/01, 05/04, 05/05, 05/12, 05/14, and 12/05 and perhaps other dates.
May 8, 1954 is the correct and only date: http://ils.unc.edu/afporch/audio/louie/louie.html
Armstrong apparently performed twice for the German club's Spring Dance: in the afternoon at Memorial Hall for the public and in the evening, 8:00 to midnight, for a formal dinner. The afternoon performance circulates widely.
Louis Armstrong - Trumpet, Vocals
Billy Kyle - Grand Piano
Arvell Shaw - Double Bass
Trummy Young - Trombone, Vocals

musicians: Norah Jones - vocals, piano, Lee Alexander - bass, Dan Reiser - drums, Jesse Harris - guitar on tracks: 1 & 3, Adam Rogers - guitar on tracks:2 & 4, Tony Scherr - guitar on track: 5; "First Sessions" was recorded on October 8th & 9th, 2000, originally intended as a demo session (for Blue Note). Overwhelming popular response to the music captured that day allowed for a limited release of a six-song EP CD titled "First Sessions". This CD is out of print and has become a collector's item. |

bumS Lie - The Psycho Semantic Police
KROQ & Demos, CA |
1 cdr |
|
|
In addition to unreleased gems like Ain't No Prophet and Pass Me the Lazerbeam, BumS Lie features
different and revised versions of other Sublime songs, including Greatest Hits Extended, which is a longer,
better version of Greatest Hits from Robbin' the Hood.
This release also includes clips of songs from other artists as well, including Sublime influences
and collaborators Just-Ice and The Wesley Willis Fiasco. There are also tracks containing music by the Juice Bros., a band that Eric and Bud are in together.
In addition to music, there are various interview clips spliced throughout BumS Lie, including clips from
the Loveline interview with Bud and Eric, and the KROQ on-air interview during which the band toked up
and consequently were punished for; Their hit single Date Rape was pulled from the KROQ playlist.
The crown jewel of this release, however, is the rare full-band version of Sublime's acoustic favorite,
Boss DJ, which includes a few changed lyrics, mainly transplanting the line "I'd never lie to Lou because
he never did to me" in place of the line "I'd never lie to you because Sunday morning soon will come."
Apart from the tracklist, another special feature of BumS Lie is the artwork. On an original copy,
the paper behind the CD tray contains a photo of an older man smoking a cigar. This is one of the only known
photos of Raleigh Theodore Sakers, the loon from Robbin' the Hood, who also appears several times on this release. |

This CD contains a compilation of acoustic studio demo material stretching from the Astral Weeks period through to the early 1970s. It is, in fact, a straight copy of a hard to find title called Gypsy Soul. Some very nice material from a great era. |

|
|
http://www.harbour.sfu.ca/%7Ehayward/van/van.html [site closed June 24, 2008; what follows are liner notes from the "Pro" Bootleg "The Lion Roars"]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Lion's Share broadcast from San Anselmo,CA is one of the great treasures prized by Morrison collectors. It is also one of the most difficult to find complete in excellent quality.
The broadcast on a low power Berkeley station [ed: see notes below] limited the reception area. Even worse, the Bay Area was rocked by a winter storm on broadcast night which not only interfered but interfered in different locations at different times. For the first time on disc, the complete two set Lion's Share Show is now in excellent quality pieced together from three sources for the cleanest tape possible.
The effort is well worth it for the rarities the listener is treated to. With jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi sitting in , Van opts for a looser sound and a number of unique performances. Check out the wordless scat singing on "Into The Mystic" as well as the long instrumental breaks. Van sings both the verses and scats on a one time performance of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" from the movie "Midnight Cowboy".
The Lenny Welch classic "Since I Fell For You" received two treatments: the first Van plays it straight while the second is an extended jazzy version with Van's most impassioned singing of the night. Other unique treats are the World War II era "White Cliffs of Dover", Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'" and a lovely version of the Johnny Mathis hit "Misty".
Among the regular songs of this era, the most compelling is "Listen to the Lion" in which Van implores us to "listen to the lion inside of me".
Amen.
Additional information from Paul Grosso:
Just for the record, the broadcast was on KPFA - it's a non-commercial station but certainly not low power. It's actually heard all over the Bay Area and has repeaters feeding their signal all the way down to Monterey.
During "Hard Nose the Highway", in the early show, Van namechecks the following musicians:
Brother Jack Schroer: saxophone
Jeff Labes: piano
Doug Messenger: guitar
Marty David: bass
Rick Shlosser: drums |

From Guy Logsdon's Discography, reprinted in Santelli, Robert & Davidson, Emily (eds.),
Hard Travelin' -- The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie, Hanover and London, 1999, p. 196:
"7 JULY 1944. Woody was a Merchant Marine, "washing dishes on a Liberty Ship," the troop ship Sea Porpoise which carried troops to the Normandy beach in early July 1944. After the troops were sent ashore, the ship hit a mine but made its way back to England; Woody was routed through London toward Glasgow, Scotland, toward the United States. On a song manuscript dated "July 13th, 1944", Woody wrote, "this train is carrying me outside from London now; on up towards Belfast, and Glasgow."
While in London, he went to the offices of the BBC where he introduced himself as a member of The Martins and the Coys [produced by Alan Lomax for the BBC in late March 1944, broadcast by the BBC on 26 June 1944] and was given the opportunity to sing on the Children's Hour. After an autobiographical statement, he was recorded singing with his guitar accompaniment two railroad songs.
900 Miles is the minor-key melody that Cisco made popular. |
