  My Trading Rules:

Hi, I just got my shows imported.? Bear with me as I fix any weirdness.? Please check out my other page at:
http://www.geocities.com/thesphinxisdrowsy/
That is the first place that gets updated, and I have complete control over setlists, etc.? Please, if we're trading, check the individual page for each show that I have listed at http://www.geocities.com/thesphinxisdrowsy/
Thanks!

Expectations and preferences (Rules, if you will...)

I'm pretty easygoing, just don't screw me over. I would like to be treated the way that I will treat you. I use decent discs (Fuji at the moment), and expect the same. Please don't send me generic see-through discs. Also, I will send a full setlist (with source info if I have it) either with the discs or via email or both. I will identify the disc with small, discreet writing on the inside ring, unless you request otherwise. I will be honest about show quality and any flaws that the proposed shows might have. I will keep in contact with you via email throughout the trade. I prefer to rip the audio to my drive using EAC in secure mode and write at 4x, and I'd love it if you'd do the same. I'll email you when I send the discs to you, and email again when I receive the discs you sent. I will ship first class mail using bubble mailers or hard cardboard mailers, never paper-fiber padded mailers. I'd usually prefer .SHN files if it's a show that's important to me (all Rusted Root, for example), but I'm cool with audio too. If you have a show in both formats, let me know and I'll choose. If we arrange a trade and we don't discuss formats, I'll assume you want audio cds. If I have a show listed as being available in .SHN format, you'll have to let me know that you want it that way.

If you get shows from me and don't agree with the grade that I gave the show on my list, let me know. I'll listen to the show again and re-evaluate it. I realize that grading is somewhat subjective, but I feel that my ratings are fairly accurate. If I rated a show an A or an A-, it's a good show. Let me know if you don't agree. Also, PLEASE let me know if you find a flaw in any of the shows I send. Let me know the track number and location. I'm easy to get along with, and I want us both to be happy. This is fun, remember :)

04/06/72 Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt Germany CDR 2 Golden Voice Volume 1 Various This is the only Golden Voice collection that is all from one show. The quality on this show is listenable, but not great. It's an early audience recording, so you know it's not going to be to crispy. Still, for serious fans, I would recommend it.
06/25/76 Casino Montreux Switzerland CDR 1 Very good show, but there is slight tape hiss. This is the 15-track version: 01. Bird On The Wire 04:46 02. So Long, Marianne 07:05 03. 12/08/79 Odeon Cinema Birmingham England CDR 1 Fascinating show with some very rare bits. Highly recommended. Includes soundcheck.
10/30/80 Concertgebouw Amsterdam The Netherlands CDR 2 Excellent recording and performance, pure Cohen magic. He's in great form, and the backing musicians are top notch. There are a couple very brief and harly noticeable dropouts in the left channel. It no big deal, but I thought I should mention it. Like most other versions, this doesn't include Bird on a Wire. See my tech notes for trackling details.
03/22/85 Sala Kongresowa Warszawa Poland CDR 2 Interesting show, with a great interview segment at the end of disc 2. The quality isn't perfect, but it's still enjoyable and listenable. This is the speed fixed version.
07/09/85 Casino Montreux Switzerland CDR 1
06/24/88 Laugardalshöll Reykjavík Iceland CDR 3 The sound distortion on the last few tracks of disc 2 is really not that bad. It's still very listenable.

11/05/99 The Odeon Cleveland OH CDR 1 Awesome early show? check out the lyrics of Painted Sun that ended up being used in Crucible Glow, and the pickup truck line that got pulled from Fancy Days to be used in Women Got My Money. The levels were still being adjusted during the first song, so there is some volume fluctuation? not a major distraction. If you like Mike solo, get this show.
11/08/99 The Cameleon Lancaster PA CDR 1 at822->d7 @48k - mic was placed in the back of the soundboard on a shelf Sound is slightly muffled and little bit tinny. Still, it's an enjoyable show with some very rare tunes. For a better-sounding but similar show check out the 11/05/99 Odeon.

01/15/00 Crystal Ballroom Portland OR CDR 2 DSBD > DA-P1 > DAT > CDR This show has some technical difficulties with guitar amps and soundboard levels during parts of some songs, but it's still a great show and recording. The track transitions appear to have been edited. I've seen that most tracklistings for this show list "Paper Thin Walls" as the second track, but it's not on my copy. The last song is cut about half-way through? criminal. Had it not been for all the technical issues with this recording, it would have easily been an A.

12/25/71 St. Mark's Church New York NY CDR 1 This is an awesome recording with tremendous historical value. This is a poetry reading from Saint Mark's Church. The quality isn't really that bad. If you're a fan of Patti's early work, you need this. Some sources have this dated as sometime in 1972.
??/??/74 Max's Kansas City New York NY CDR 1 Patti played at this venue almost every night from 8/28 until 9/9 of 1974. This recording is from one of those nights. Be sure to notice the alternate lyrics in the beginning of Land.
12/28/75 WBAI Radio New York NY CDR 1
01/09/76 Paul Mann's Jazz Workshop Boston MA CDR 1 DAO, great early show. The first track has some slight amp buzzing and it starts with a pop.
02/16/76 The Boarding House San Francisco CA CDR 1 Correct date is 2/15/76, not 2/16/76. Good early soundboard recording? Patti sounds a little spaced :) Levels fluctuate slightly occasionally, but considering the age of the recording, it's quite nice. There is some nice improvisation in this show. There are a few small skips on a couple tracks, the worst being on track 12 at 00:55.
03/27/76 Tower Theater Upper Darby PA CDR 1 A good recording considering the age. The levels start a little low, fluctuate through the first two tracks, and then more or less stabilize. Includes the ultra-rare "Jolene". There is a lot of improvisation in this show. Tiny skips in track 1 at 01:16, 01:23, 1:24, and 1:25 and there appears to be an edit between tracks 1 and 2 and tracks 9 and 10.
10/03/76 Konserthuset Stockholm Sweden CDR 1 liberated boot - 'I Never Talked To Bob Dylan'
10/20/77 Galerie Veith Turske Cologne Germany CDR 1 Okay, the quality isn't great. It's a mediocre audience recording from almost three decades ago. But seriously, this shit is pure Patti magic. It's the Cologne Poetry Reading recording. The first track, Dream of Rimbaud, is one of my all-time favorites. All in all, the entire setlist is genius.
04/18/78 Agora Ballroom Cleveland OH CDR 1 This is not the entire show, but it's the most complete version of the show that is in circulation, as far as I know. There are edits between tracks. Fantastic "Ain't It Strange"
04/23/78 Unknown Paris France CDR 1 This show is NOT from 4/23/78 as commonly listed. Patti performed in Boston on 4/23/78. See my tech notes for full setlist data from this Paris show with unknown date.
04/28/78 Park West Chicago IL CDR 1
05/04/78 The Place Eugene OR CDR 2 Great show, but the recording has a fairly persistant hiss. Still, she's is great form. Great Gloria. Starts in a bit abruptly.
??/??/78 Rarities 1974-1978 Various Various CDR 1 Occasional popping? not terrible, but I would be remiss for not mentioning it. Still, this is a great collection. Songs are from different sources (as noted) and there are fades between tracks.
05/13/79 The Tower Theatre Upper Darby PA CDR 2 Decent recording considering the age. Includes "Secret Agent Man" Some track transitions are a little rough. See my tech notes for setlist details.
05/24/79 CBGB's New York NY CDR 1 Bob Dylan birthday bash Quality isn't the best, but it's listenable.
09/10/79 Stadio Comunale Florence Italy CDR 3 This is not a good recording. It's a fairly crappy audience recording, with some distortion, varying levels, and a good deal of audience noise at points. That said, it's also a recording of great historical value, as this was the "last" Patti Smith Group show. This is absolutely a serious-fans-only show. This show is DAO, but track transitions are a little rough, and some have obviously been edited. The interview at the end of disc 3 is almost 40 minutes long, and it's really a gem in the rough. See my tech notes for the full setlist.

07/08/93 Central Park New York NY CDR 1 Quality isn't perfect, but it's a great spoken word performance 14 years after leaving the public stage, before her big comeback. My copy includes the following filler from unknown dates/venues: 17. Piss Factory 05:00 18. Memorial Song 03:32
09/04/95 Slim's San Francisco CA CDR 3 Nice quality, fun acoustic show with lot's of chatting with the audience. Disc 1 is the early show, and discs 2 and 3 are the late show. See my tech notes for full setlist data.

12/15/95 Electric Factory Philadelphia PA CDR 1 This is actually Patti's complete performances from 12/15 and 12/16, 1995, the first two nights of a three-night stand at the Electric Factory. 1-9 12/15/95 10-16 12/16/95 Liberated boot, "Perfect Moon"

Tracks 11-14: 21 October 2000, Ralph Nader Rally, Oakland CA. Tracks 15-19: 16 February 2002, Terni, Italy. Source for tracks 1-10 is soundbaord FM, source for filler tracks 11-19 is audience. Overall, quality is pretty good. I put separate grades for each source segment in the setlist. There are a couple tiny pops here and there, but nothing too noticeable.
06/01/96 Genet/Artaud Conference London England CDR 1
06/03/96 The Serpentine Gallery London UK CDR 1 Volume is a little low. Patti has to borrow an audience member's copy of _Early Work_ to read Piss Factory.
07/03/96 Olympia Paris France CDR 1 Pristine soundboard recording of a great show with emphasis on poetry. Get it now. There are small edits between tracks 4 and 5, tracks 6 and 7, tracks 9 and 10, tracks 13 and 14, and tracks 14 and 15. There are lots of reasons to snatch this show up, but perhaps the best part is the awesome reworking of Land (Version). Check out the completely new lyrics. This is one of my all-time favorite versions of Land into Gloria.
07/24/96 Casino Ostende Ostende Belgium CDR 2 Very good recording, excellent show, DAO. Killer When Doves Cry into a brilliant alternate version of Ain't It Strange and back. Patti's obviously in good spirits? Gloria is riotous.
08/01/96 Markthalle Hamburg Germany CDR 1
08/09/96 Riddarholmen Stockholm Sweden CDR 2 Prisine recording of a great show. Highly recommended. This was her Waterfestival performance. See my tech notes for full setlist data.

09/??/97 Unknown New York NY CDR 1 There is a little amp buzzing in the beginning. Quality varies with the source, I listed grades for each different segment. Tracks 1-5 recorded live in New York in September 1997. Tracks 6-8 live at St. Marks Church, NY May 1975. Tracks 9-11 studio outtakes, track 12 live in Eugene on May 1978.

06/23/00 Experience Music Project Seattle WA CDR 1
07/15/00 Old Town School Of Folk Music at Welles Park Chicago IL CDR 2 Benefit for Old Town School Of Folk Music at Welles Park This is an awesome show. There are a couple tiny pops and instances of audio weirdness, but they're really few and far between. Get this show if you're a fan of this genius artist.
11/20/00 De Melkweg Amsterdam The Netherlands CDR 2 Great audience recording, very fun show. See my tech notes for full setlist data.
12/01/00 St. James Church London England CDR 2 Acoustic William Blake tribute. Volume is a little low, but quality is decent. The songs are much louder than when Patti is talking, so you may have to play volume police while listening. There are a few tiny skips/blips on a couple tracks. You don't actually miss anything, it's just annoying. If it weren't for these small defects, I'd rate this show an A-. This is probably a stealth recording.
12/30/00 Bowery Ballroom New York NY CDR 2 This show rocks. The Christmas version of Gloria is fun. The audience is plenty loud at moments, but the band is clear.
12/31/00 Bowery Ballroom New York NY CDR 2 Audience is a little noisy, but who can blame them? :) Another brilliant new year performance from the Queen of Rock and Roll. The performance of Jerulsalem by Blake over the countdown of the dregs of 2000 is a true Patti Smith moment, and the alternate versions of Land and Gloria are inspired.
03/24/01 Centre Beaubourg Paris France CDR 1 Beautiful soundboard recording of an awesome acoustic show. There are instances were an interpretor translates what Patti's saying into French. It's a little annoying, but definitely not a reason to pass this show up.
05/13/01 Paradise Rock Club Boston MA CDR 2 DAO, great show
07/03/01 The Opera Vienna Austria CDR 1 This show was on the 30th anniversary of Jim Morrison's death. The Ghost Dance from this show is great. The quality of this recording is excellent, but there is a small glitch on track 7 at 03:07. See my tech notes for full setlist data.
08/07/01 Fillmore San Francisco CA CDR 2 Night one of the Fillmore shows from 2001. There's filler on the second disc... I'll update these notes when I figure out who it is.
08/08/01 The Fillmore San Francisco CA CDR 2
08/11/01 Unknown Chicago IL CDR 2 DAO There's a tiny skip in disc 2 track 1 at 00:37.
12/27/01 Keswick Theater Glenside PA CDR 2 Great audience recording, powerful performance
12/30/01 Bowery Ballroom New York NY CDR 3 Liberated boot "You Haven't Gotten One Thing You Wanted" Overall quality is quite good, but there are occasionally small volume surges. This show was on Patti's 55th birthday. Unreleased Steven Sebring documentary footage played at the end of intermission, prior to the second set. This scene is Patti reading with Philip Glass on Piano. The following edits were made in the source tapes: Disc 1 Track 6 was taken from second source. Disc 1 tracks 5 and 7 were overlapped and edited audience noise was edited to transition cleanly into new Track 6. Disc 1 Track 5 was edited to remove dropout at 0:10-0:12. Disc 2 Track 1 was edited to cover a big jump in recording level at approximately 4:00 by fading up gradually. Disc 3 Track 5 had applause faded out to cover cut while waiting for encore. The following problems remain: Disc 1 Track 5: Minor volume surge 0:13-0:14 Musicians Patti Smith: Guitar, Clarinet Lenny Kaye: Guitar Oliver Ray: Guitar Tony Shanahan: Bass, Piano Jay Dee Daugherty: Drums
12/31/01 Bowery Ballroom New York NY CDR 3 Liberated boot "Winged Moccasins" Quality is pretty good, I was tempted to give it an A. Unreleased Steven Sebring documentary footage played at the end of intermission, prior to the second set. Some of the scenes included: Riding in a car and singing along to the tune on the radio, Hanging out at home with Oliver, Talking about Mapplethorpe's "Still moving". Disc 1 Track 2: the occasional noise is crackling from the PA (minor) Disc 1 Track 7: the noise at 2:06-2:10 is someone bumping the taper's mic (minor) Patti Smith: Guitar, Clarinet Lenny Kaye: Guitar Oliver Ray: Guitar Tony Shanahan: Bass, Piano Jay Dee Daugherty: Drums

07/30/03 Hesse Museum Montagnola Switzerland CDR 1 Acoustic show from radio broadcast. There are occasional comments from the radio announcer, and the station's branding sound bite can be heard between some tracks. The quality is very good. This is not the complete show, it's just what was broadcast on the radio. In fact, Gloria fades out, which is an absolute sin. I assume they faded it out to fit into their 1-hour programming block. Still, as far as I know, this is the only available version of this show.

09/24/99 Mandalay Bay Events Center Las Vegas NV CDR 2 Sadly, this show was burnt TAO. I'm uncertain of the lineage. This is Tori's Plugged Pay-Per-View Concert. It was filmed 09/24/1999 and aired 02/19/00. The filler tracks on disc 2 are gems and rarities from various sources, both live and studio (good stuff, all). This is a great show, it's too bad the quality isn't a little better.

To make up for this delay, WaveLab was used to equal out the arrival times between left and right channels. -Resampled from 48kHz to 44.1 kHz -Fades added to beginning and end of sets -Sets normalized
