This is a composite of two sources. A master cassette provides the portion
from Black Peter up to the drum solo of Good Lovin' as well as the last
couple minutes of Lovelight. Possibly a monitor mix, the master cassette
portion varies in quality, most notably degrading in Black Peter and the end
of Lovelight. A reel recording provides the end of Good Lovin' through
most of Lovelight.
It is possible that this is not the complete show, though it would be likely
that only one or two songs may have preceded Black Peter. Sound Forge was
used to normalize, correct the pitch of the master cassette portion, and
patch together the different sources.
This is a loud and very rowdy show, prompting some priceless banter from the
band.

Editing: Recorded with SoundForge. Burned to CD using CD Architect. The only
editing was to remove approximately 4 minutes and 22 seconds of repeated
material on the DAT during the banter between Top of the World and Cosmic
Charlie. I also removed a couple of minor pops. Other than that, no editing
was done. The breaks between each CD were breaks that were already present on
the DAT. The only addition was 2 seconds of silence prior to the start of
disc 3.
Enjoy!

Subject: A show to be heard
Hi folks,
I am just now putting the finishing touches on a 3 CD set of the Fillmore West
show from 6/7/70. This show is very interesting, and in my opinion is crying to
be heard.
Here's some interesting tidbits about the show.
Set list (broken down by CD)
CD 1: Acoustic Set
Don't Ease, Silver Threads, My Dog Has No Nose, Friend of the Devil, Candyman,
Cold Jordon, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Cumberland Blues, Me & My Uncle, New
Speedway Boogie
CD 2: Electric Set
Cryptical -> Drums -> Other One -> Cryptical -> Drums -> The Main Ten -> Sugar
Magnolia*
CD 3: Electric Set (continued)
Louie Louie Jam, It's A Man's World, Mama Tried, Top of the World, banter,
Cosmic Charlie, Casey Jones, Good Lovin' -> Drums -> Good Lovin'
The total running time is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, give or take a
few minutes.
Note: There is a cut (reel splice I assume) during Casey Jones.
Interesting info that makes this show so cool:
During the little drumming interlude prior to the Other One, there is some woman
you can hear ranting and raving and generally going on about Viet Nam. It would
seem the band kind of lets her state her piece in its entirety before going into
the Other One. Very cool.
The whole second CD is very cool. The jam after the Cryptical reprise is
great. It goes into a kind of lulling drum beat which goes on for a few minutes
(what I called Drums again, even though it isn't in the official setlist) before
Phil takes it up and you hear the definite Main Ten bass line. A great Main Ten
jam that goes on for about 4 1/2 minutes or so before Bobby takes it into Sugar
Magnolia.
First version of Sugar Magnolia. Very cool :) No, it doesn't rock, but up
until now, the earliest version I'd ever heard was the one from the famed
6/24/70 Cap Theater show, which I thought was unusual enough to be of historical
significance. This one is also interesting historically.
Between Top of the World and Casey Jones the band sits around talking to the
crowd and deciding what to play next. What kills me is Bobby's comment: "Hey,
there's a guy over there, he's always over there and he always yells out 'Golden
Road!'. I wanna know who he is, because man, you really take the cake. To tell
you the truth we've forgotten how to play that song" or something like that.
You can also hear several suggestions for songs, among them "White Rabbit",
which cracks up the crowd.
Great stuff. Let's get it out there. The acoustic set is pretty
straight-forward, but it's the electric set I think that really shines. The
boys just seems to be having a great time the whole show.

The AUD is spliced in to supply the following segments:
- beginning through D1T2 (Easy Wind) 3:16
- D2T1 (Speedway) 2:24 through the end
The difference in mix & ambience between the AUD + SBD sources is enormous.
(The same is not necessarily true for the actual sound quality, in terms of
listening pleasure. The AUD may not be very clean and up front; but the SBD is
flat and lifeless.) That's why I played around with the sources I had and
produced a few "bonus tracks" which are included here.
4. Easy Wind 9:05
complete in almost untouched SBD - there was no right channel
signal on the source from 0:05 to 1:05. I put the left channel
onto both stereo channels. Generally the first 4 minutes suffer
from very bad mix. This track includes the banter before the
song; missing on the AUD.
5. Uncle John's Band 6:54
The complete song from the AUD tape.
6. Easy Wind 7:23
soundboard/audience mixes: both sources can be heard.
The idea behind this was to take two completely
opposite-sounding recordings of the same performance, both
tapes being of suboptimal quality, and produce a combination
that would be more enjoyable to listen to than either source.
Whether or not I succeeded, you'll be the judge.
This process required lots of "trial & error" synchronization of
the two source recordings. There are two minor cuts in the AUD
tape which were just too minor for me to care about.
I'll be the first to admit that it is not perfect. Much of this
is actually due to the first half of the song not having enough
instruments in the SBD mix.
The second half, however, is to me a "warmer" recreation of what
might have been the actual hall sound on 6/13/70, than either of
the two source recordings.
For another example of an SBD/AUD combination, check out
Scarlet Begonias on 9/11/74 ("the third version").
patched by H.B.; 4/02
thanks to Paul Bottiglio for the SBD and Uli for the AUD source!

- My entire recording is included on these discs, including radio announcer (Old Saxophone Joe) intro and outro. Only material missing are two promos for Ampex tape.
- ~2 sec. dropout on Mission (3:28) was during broadcast and not a tape artifact.
- d2t05 - The Wheel from unknown AUD source (not included in original broadcast).
- d3t05 - 5:54 Around ends; remainder of track consists of crowd noise waiting for encore; 7:27 radio announcer comes on discussing encore.
- d3t08 - 2:56 Weir says "Thank y'all and good night"; 3:17 radio announcer comes in and continues through end of track. |

Notes:
1. these shn's are from the same source as Noah Weiner, but had an unknown number of intermediate cassette generations. Noah's shn's have less hiss and better fidelity but suffer from tape decay. The tape decay manifests as many instances of brief partial loss of high frequencies which sound like "tape warble". The version I am seeding here, having been transfered earlier to DAT via an unknown number of cassette generations did not suffer from the tape decay. When listening on headphones, I find that my ears can tune out the tape hiss (no more than typical by the way for 76 aud tapes) and I find it less distracting than the more sudden and variable effects of the tape decay in Noah's source.
2. this source required some patches from Noah's. Apparently, in an attempt to fit the show on cassettes, the between song banter was removed, with about 1/2 the songs missing a few opening notes as well, the channels were flipped compared to Noah's source, and there were a few cases where the cassette flips lost music that was present in Noah's source. I also adjusted the track times to be close to Noah's to correct for the effects of different cassette speeds. All this being said this show has some unique playing in my experience, and is one of my favorite 76 aud tapes, and I can whole heartedly recommend it.

NOTES
Flaw-free, from a digital perspective. All the "Dead Air"
has been cut from between tracks. There is some amplifier
hum that is audible (particularly at the beginning of Stella
Blue) and it sounds like someone kicks an amp 3:35 into
Might As Well. There is a brief overlap from disc 2 to disc
3 (Phil pounds out the intro to the TOO at the very end of
disc 2, and disc 3 starts right there with that intro).
This came to me via trade from Jay Ashley (thanks!) who
copied my CDs from his CDs, and I did the DAE extraction and
compression to SHN. Enjoy!

notes
- Easy to Love You is listed after FOTD on Deadlists but appears after Althea on the recording I received. Since the between song tuning/banter is not continuous here, I left the song order as I received it.
- there is a cut between TOO and drums but it happens during a slight pause so no music is missing as far as I can tell
- This is an excellent audience recording and one of the best shows of 1980!

Comments:
I recorded this show from WBEZ Chicago (Got to love public broadcasting).
It was broadcasted live with all the fan fare of a normal summer
solstice show. During the show, they added a lot of crowd comments and the
band listed off all of the radio stations that were broadcasting the show.
I cleaned out as much of this as I could using COOLEDIT. I have included
in the notes all of the spots that I did.
Notes:
gd-84-06-21-d1-t1 - 1st 30 seconds is commentator lead in
gd-84-06-21-d1-t2 - 25 seconds of stations introductions by Brent removed
between TLEO & CC Rider. None of music removed.

Bird Song. Nove of the music removed.
gd-84-06-21-d1-t5 - Tape error from 00:48 through 00:54 into BIODTL

Copied left channel to right for these 24 seconds.

A Huge thanks goes out to Steven Martin for the source discs
Thanks to Popi for getting me the AUD for patching
Patch source:
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=10924
Notes:
- Odd sound at 1:33 of Dancin in the Streets
- Little Red Rooster patched from - 0:00 - 0:42
- Terrapin Station patched from 0:12 - 0:23
- Audience after Sugar Magnolia fades out as Black Muddy River was
originally placed at the end of disc 1. I faded Black Muddy River
in so there isn't an abrupt start. No Music is missing just fans
fading in and out.
- This show can fit on 2 74 minute CDs by placing the Encore on disc 1
Also a big thanks goes out to the guys and girls at SHN Traders for
helping me spread these seeds around. Mike, Jason, Michele, Teri,
Rob, Steve, Tom, Dean and the rest.
And another big thanks to Richard, Michael, Mick and Vivek over at

* noise at 3:34 & 4:16 from the sound system
x 1st part cut comes in at ..."On my way, on my way" right before
"Left my boots in transit" verse
# There are several places in drums begining at 2:58 where a deep bass
drum causes clipping. Its especially bad at 4:58.
The levels on the MC were were very hot, but fortunately only a few
places in drums were clipped.
@ removed small blips of digi spurts at the miracle > Wharf rat
and the Wharf rat > lovelight transtions.
Now it sounds similar to small skips. Before the edit, it sounded like
small skips with digi spurts. Maybe due to some previous tracking which
didnt follow red book standards?
The sound is quite nice and full.
ENJOY!!!

Comment: Disc 2 fits on an 80 minute disc. This is a very clean source,
there is one very small glitch in Hell In A Bucket. Space has some feedback distortion that is not a recording error or digital artifact.

Tech Notes
SHNs were decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch the SBD & AUD sources. This is a 60% SBD, 40% AUD mix.
- Mixed by dan@am-dig.com
- Shn conversion done by dan@am-dig.com 10-AUG-2004
- Artwork by Mike Ahern and dan@am-dig.com 300dpi - For best
results print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo
paper. Design for use with a clear slim double jewel case.
Special thanks to Mike for his hard work on this art.
---------------------------------------------------------
Notes
The levels were very low on the SBD source. I increased
set 1 by 3.5db and set 2 by 7.5db.
D1t4 'BIODTL' a 1 second AUD patch was made at approx 2.22
to cover a cut, dropout or skip in the SBD. Source change
from SBD to AUD is obvious to the listener.
D1t5 'Roses' a 1 second AUD patch was made at approx 0.22
to cover a cut, dropout or skip in the SBD. The result was
smooth and most likely unnoticeable.
D1 The SBD source was missing approx 2.38 of crowd cheer
after 'Roses'. Most likely where the cassette flip was.
The AUD source was trimmed to match. The result was smooth
and most likely unnoticeable.
D2 and D3 can be assembled seamlessly on longer media.
NOTE: Burning options. You can also burn this as 2 CDs by
putting D2T1 & D2T2 (Scarlet > Fire) on the end of the first
CD. Obviously I set this up for 3 discs but in the end I
ended up burning as a 2 disc myself. The artwork was setup
to accomidate both options.
D2 Both the SBD and the AUD sources had breaks bwtn the D2
and D3 change. The SBD source also had a cassette flip break.
Fortunately the breaks were at different spots. I patched
the missing SBD portions, approx 4 and 3 seconds, with the
AUD. I patched the missing AUD portion, approx 6 seconds, with
the SBD. The result was smooth and most likely unnoticeable.
The SBD source faded out after the last song of set 2. It
restarts at the very first notes of the encore. I adjusted
the AUD source accordingly to match. I tried to make this
as smooth as possible and it came out okay.
I ran the center channel lower than usual (-5db) for this
DTS 5.1 mix.
This Scarlet > Fire is absolutely insane.

Comments: Extremely bodacious and full sounding recording with enough audience to make me think matrix.
*** This version does NOT have the cut in the middle of Jerry's solo in UJB as on previously circulated analog versions of this show.
- minor digi fuzz at 00:55 of Me and My Uncle
- "battle hymn" tuning right before start of Cassidy.
- lengthy noodling jam preceding Eyes
- very intense 'thunder' sounds during LLR - speaker alert.

SOURCE:
SBD > DAT > DAT clones > my DAT > ZA-2 > wave (via Cool Edit) > CD-R master
No editing was performed other than cutting the wave into disc-size segments.
CONVERSION:
CD-R master > EAC > waves > MKW shorten > .shn
Mastering and conversion by John McAtee, johnm@coresoft.com. Seeded to etree January 2001.
NOTES:
Tracking was done the way it was at the request of a dear friend, so don't flame me
about the tuning tracks 'cause I don't usually do it that way!
Another version of these shortens circulate with an INCORRECT lineage that does
not list the EAC stage. It has different track names, but the checksums are the same.
The "noise" that appears at times is NOT noise, but the heaviest bursts of rain I've
ever seen at a show.

OFFICIAL SHOW NOTES: LINEAGE: SBD > GD MASTER MULTI-TRACK ADAT > MARIN COUNTY SOURCE MIXDOWN 2-TRACK ADAT > SSSB; Bruce Hornsby on grand piano/accordion/vocals for entire show; technical problems with main digital ADAT decks, resulting in numerous "cuts" when backup deck was used during Set I only; Garcia's voice was slightly hoarse for his first 2 songs; any/all editing, fades, NR, hiss elimination, phase shifting/"time smear" correction, jitter elimination, EQ, and quantization noise elimination (when down-converting audio to 16-bit / 44.1 kHz for CD-R mastering), were all performed using 24-bit / 96 kHz digital realm processing at Serafin Station Studio B [this show was released 01/02]
JAY'S PERSONAL COMMENTS:
Oh, this is another very nice show... part of the excellent "Boston Garden run" that year. I'll talk about the technical problems which plagued the Dead's multi-track recording during Set I as the comments proceed. Quite a bit of "patching up" was needed for this show (2 songs in Set I only... Set II had no technical problems), but it all turned out okay when all the work was completed! This show (along with the 9/24/91 show), despite it's few Set I recording problems, now is part of my "Top 20 shows" in my personal Kindness dubbing library. Not enough to make it into the Top 10, but it's in the very high teens!
Again, like the 9/24/91 show I just released, Bruce Hornsby sat in for this show, mainly playing on his grand piano, with a few songs on accordion... those instruments' wonderful tones added greatly to the overall sound of this show. Like the 9/24/91 show, it comes through, but not in an overbearing way. His vocals added some "punch" on a few songs, especially Maggie's Farm.
Set I opens with a long, and highly-charged Shakedown Street. You can hear Jerry's voice is a little hoarse, but the effects for his vocals compensated for this. By the time he was into his 3rd song, he was singing with a much more "healthier" tone to his vocals. In my opinion, the opening 3 song run (Shakedown Street -> C. C. Rider -> Train To Cry) is one of the best trio the Dead's ever done (not counting the "Blues For Allah Trio"), as these 3 really went well into each other, without a hitch.
As with a number of Dead concerts, there were a few technical problems. This shows' problems involved their master ADAT deck, which had the rough 8 channel mix fed to it. The main deck kept going into "pause mode", once during Shakedown, but many times during Maggie's Farm. They "resolved" the problem early on by just punching RECORD on the 2nd of the 3 decks. But you can hear the edits (corrected by cross-fading) very noticeably during Maggie's. I did my best to match everything beat for beat, so you're only going to miss a couple of words, or at the longest, a single line of verse. From Me & My Uncle through the end of Set 1, the audio levels were slightly lower (which I left that way), because of levels of the backup deck not being set the same (it was a "hurry up and do it" situation, you must understand). There's only about a 1.5 dB lower signal level, so it's not really noticeable, and they're pretty "quiet" songs, anyway. But after Maggie's, there were no more problems with missing sections of the show, due to the 2nd deck being used.
The Set 1 closer, Let It Grow, is one of their most powerful versions I've ever heard (and I've listened to plenty!). Bobby simply nails the vocals, really putting the accents and the "energy" into the right words in certain lines. Jerry's first guitar solo has him playing his "Mexican Trumpet" MIDI sound, and it's a wonderful fit (due to the song being pretty much "Latin American" based in it's "setting". The sound was just right, but not overdone. Towards the end of the song, you can hear Weir's guitar level louder in the mix, and he's using the same basic trumpet MIDI sound in his playing. Everything about this version was ON, and once you listen to it, I think you'll agree.
Set 2: Nice to get a treat, with a great rendition of Samson for the opener. Nice touch, nice choice. The applause after Samson is NOT a splice, simply Healy hitting the "audience mike button" like he's always been known to do. Thank goodness, it wasn't one of his "turning it on and off constantly", which can really screw up a good show!!!
Aiko came and went with it's usual highly festive sound, and it was, again, just a nice choice. Another short break, and then comes the "flow of the show", with all of the remaining songs just going from one to the next with no hesitations. A little "hinting" was done for a few of them by Jerry, but the Boyz were in sync for everything.
A mellow, but not a "sorrowful" Looks Like Rain (Jerry again went to his "trumpet MIDI" sound for a bit, and once more, it was good to hear) went into He's Gone (slightly over 10 minutes long)... then Jerry get in 2 and half minutes of Nobody's Fault But Mine, and Weir took over for a very good Spoonful. Again, he got the accents nailed, and this version is a very enjoyable one.
Drums got the "rush to the bathroom" break going, with Billy setting the pace with a slightly laid back typical rock beat, with some jazz licks thrown in to break the monotony. Mickey went right to the MIDI percussion from the beginning. The contrast of the 2 percussion rhythms worked well, no qualms from me. They were both "in sync" as well as playing different beat patterns for their time on stage, and it, again, worked nicely. That's the one things I've grown accustomed to: I've only heard less than 6 shows where these 2 weren't "on the same page" for shows. They always were fresh, never the same patterns, and the synergy between Mickey's and Billy's percussion worked just like Garcia and Weir's guitar playing did. Drums came to a somewhat abrupt close, with Billy doing the cymbal pattern to the opening of "Shaft"! Then they just went offstage, and the MIDI began for a short period. Jerry came back on fairly quickly, and began to go into the ozone, and one by one, the remainder of the musicians strolled back on, and just "put in their 2 cents". It was a little different from what we're used to hearing, but hey, it's the Dead!
Space quickly went into The Last Time, with not a lot of "lead time". Jerry followed up with a "usual" Stella Blue. Not his best version, but not rushed in any way, either. At the end, Bobby commands the band to go into Sugar Magnolia. They turned up their levels for this song, and it took the SBD people by surprise at the end! There was some slight low-frequency distortion from the levels being too hot at the end. The compressor/limiters kicked in hard, and this is what caused this to happen. I was able to have the editing software "cure" part of the clipped peaks, but unfortunately, once distortion is recorded, it cannot ever be 100% undone. And the same thing happened at the end of Sunshine Daydream. Luckily, for both of these episodes, they were short, less than 30 seconds each. Just chalk it up to the band wanting to play with "everything louder than everything else"!
A "favorite" encore, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, was given it's due with both Jerry's singing and Hornsby's accordion playing. The combo of these 2 probably kept people in the venue for a little longer than normal. (Hey, how many times have YOU left for the exit during Knockin' or better yet I Fought The Law????) Anyone who hung around got a treat. Not an excellent version, but much more than usual, and really nicely done.
The technical flaws aside, this is a beautiful show, and one that should be in everyone's library. Not just because it's pat of the Boston Garden run, but for the show's quality, and the band member's individual efforts once again making the Dead sound like no other band ever.
PERSONAL RATINGS: (on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being excellent)
Audio Mix: 9.6 (slightly more instruments on the right channel and not enough Weir)
Audio Quality: 9.7 (the master deck problems being the reason it's not a 10)
Energy Level: 9.4 (shortened Drums and Space and an average Aiko contributing)
Show "Completeness": 10
Song Selection: 9.4 (long opening Shakedown and the 2 following songs in a row, plus the Set 2 opener)
Surprises: Hornsby's playing during this run worked well.

SET(S): I / II
LINEAGE SBD > GD MASTER DIGITAL MULTI-TRACK > MARIN COUNTY DIGITAL MIXDOWN TO DAT > SSSB
AUDIO RATING: AR1
MEDIA REQUIRED: DAT: 1x180 min.
CD-R / MINI DISC: 3
RELEASED ON: 12/18/01
OFFICIAL SHOW NOTES: Bruce Hornsby on grand piano and vocals the entire show; according to the Marin County source, "Jerry wasn't himself" for this show (vocal problems); Garcia did not have the usual amount and type of effects added to his vocals, and his levels were slightly louder in overall mix; technical problems with Hart's percussion and MIDI interface cut "Drums" short; GD master digital recording was paused for approx. 4 min. while the problem was attempted to be corrected, w/o success, on the master SBD mixer; the venue's audio was not affected as much/as long as the engineers switched some channels and bypassed the main mixer for about 5 minutes; for "Space" > "Miracle", Phil's bass level was low, due to the master mixer's channel reassignments and pre-set levels; any/all editing, fades, NR, hiss elimination, phase shifting/"time smear" correction, jitter elimination, EQ, and quantization noise elimination (when down-converting audio to 16-bit / 44.1 kHz for CD-R mastering), were all performed using 32-bit / 96 kHz digital realm processing at Serafin Station Studio B
JAY'S PERSONAL COMMENTS:
This show is not really what I expected. Excellent Set I, and a great first half of Set II. Then, things kind of went south, beginning with a technical problem (discussed below). But, I'm not disappointed with the show, as this is a GREAT example of a band's "appreciation for their audience"
Bruce Hornsby sat in for this show, playing his heart out on his wonderfully miked, and properly mixed grand piano. This man plays with such a versatile style, and his "classical music chord structures" for some of the songs really made this point stand out. You have to listen for them during the show, but once you hear a couple of them, you'll know what I mean.
Set I opens with an fair version of Let The Good Times Roll. A little "uneven" and not a "let's get the audience in the mood" version The show began to get a little more life in it from the next song on.
Feel Like A Stranger starts the higher intensity level going for the remainder of the set. Nice feel to the song... sort of laid back, yet it still retained the "good feeling power" it's known for when it's played certain ways. Jerry's voice, which had surprisingly few effects added to it (i.e., not the normal amount of compression & limiting, plus almost NO reverb/delay; it had a nice "dry and natural" sound quality to it, and you can really hear this during Althea.
Personally, I think Jerry may have been feeling a bit under the weather (not under the influence), as his powerful voice seemed to be sometimes strained; he sang almost every song with a bit less "volume intensity" (which, technically, accounts for the lack of the usual level of compression and limiting needed this night for his vocal channel). Hey, we've all had sore throats in our lives, and I can understand that if this was the case, I would not have wanted to make my voice any worse off than it already was.
It's All Over Now sat well with me. Good version, nothing more, nothing less.
Jerry tried to put forth a little more effort for High Time, and you can just hear the start of his voice starting to crack and showing more "little snippets" of being strained. But he made it through, giving me (and the audience, from their reaction, a very enjoyable version. His lack of "raw vocal power" this night was made up for by his subtle little accents, "manually-controlled" softer singing in sections of some songs, and so forth.
A Beat It On Down The Line with NO countdown??? I had to double-check this, as I'm not used to hearing the song without the usual intro. Listened closely to the audio for any signs of the audio being "cut"; nope, no edits in the tape, it was simply a "zero beat" intro. That's fine (and good to hear!), as ANYTHING is possible when the Dead play! Nice smooth segue into Big Railroad Blues. Again, you can hear Jerry's voice a little louder in the mix, and it was just slightly more ragged a couple of times during the song.
Next came a very long Desolation Row... 12+ minutes in this version. I believe that Bob MAY have added another of Dylan's original verses in this evening's rendition. I am not a big "DR" fan, so I'm not going to officially say whether one "extra verse" was thrown in or not. People more familiar or more happy to hear the song played would be better judges. But this version was quite long, played in it's usual tempo, and there weren't any extra "solo parts" (that I noticed) to cause the song to be a few minutes longer than usual.
I had the set list, pre-written out, in front of me on the editing sheets, where I keep a record of anything / everything I would do for / to a show I work on. But I was certain that they were going to segue right from "DR" into New Speedway Boogie. Nope! I got fooled; about a minute of tuning and noodling, and the closer began without any real fanfare.
I got a kick out of NSB, as I thought it was an unusual closer... I was secretly hoping for them to segue into Don't Ease Me In, but those hopes were dashed when Bobby gave his obligatory Set I closing words.
Maybe Jerry was just pacing himself for Set II, or maybe something was physically and/or mentally amiss with Garcia. I don't have an exact reason... when I spoke to my MC source about this evening's situation with Garcia, all I was told were three words, "Jerry wasn't himself". End of discussion about this aspect of the performance that night!
Now for Set II, the more "interesting" part of the show, for several reasons.
I was told, by several people who were at the show (one being a very close personal friend) that the intermission was close to 15 minutes longer than what would normal. I, personally, chalk it up to Jerry possibly trying to get his voice back into gear. Maybe a couple of lozenges, a little bit of honey, who knows.
Everyone was treated to a really nice China Cat Sunflower. I say "nice" because you can tell Jerry was singing softer than normal at this time. During "Rider", he tried to give his voice more "oomph", and that seemed to have taken it's toll for the remainder of the show, unfortunately.
The band took a pause after Rider, and then slowly went into "Man Smart, Woman Smarter". Weir was trying to make up for Jerry's loss of his voice, and he did so by actually ALSO singing softer than normal. This was giving Set II a much more relaxed and laid back feeling. Different to hear, not unpleasant on the ears, and it made for a nice change of pace.
The segue from Woman Smarter into Ship Of Fools wasn't that smooth, as it seemed like the rest of the band wanted something a bit more high energy than the Ship was capable of producing. I can't put my finger on what song the rest of the band wanted to go into; Jerry's "insistent" guitar licks won the battle, and he gave the audience a very soulful version, and the audience responded in kind. Somewhat "feeling sorry" for Jerry, yet giving him and the rest of the band their proper respect and admiration.
Coming out of Ship... again, not a real smooth segue, but the band members were all on the same page, and a "first verse only" Dark Star came wafting through the venue's speakers. Jerry's voice, and his overall frustration with this situation (this is what it sounded like to me after listening to the show a few times during the final "review" before making the master and safety recordings) about not being able to sing anywhere near to his usual ways, was more than compensated for by his "soaring to the heavens" solos, riffs, and fills! This was one of those songs that if it weren't for the length of his guitar's neck, the notes would have kept going higher and higher past the range of human hearing! Even though he really blows the lyrics, I cannot fault him for it. I still reveled in hearing, and cherished listening, to Jerry's mastery of the 6-string for this 14+ minute version of the Star!
PERSONAL NOTE: There is NOTHING like sitting in the "sweet spot" in my post-production audio/video studio, or even at someone's house with a good audio system, and listening to Dark Star flowing through the air, coming through without any "discoloration" or "frequency skewing" of the audio! I concentrate very heavily to the audio when I'm working on shows, looking for any slight errors (the large ones are easy to pick up!), but listening to Jerry giving the audience "their Money's worth" kept pulling my attention away from the song, and I missed two little digital jitter noise clicks! (I did catch them during the last processing phase of the multi-step processes I use for every show).
(This is where my Disc 3 begins, just for a point of reference)
Drums is where things began to technically go downhill (I told you I'd get to this!). Billy starts off Drums on his own. Mickey's not doing much percussion, just getting everything ready to begin his "travels into the percussion/MIDI realms". K-Man's got a really intense rock-oriented solid beat, and the energy's flowing like lava from a volcano, enveloping and engulfing anyone in it's path. It's "technically" nothing fancy or flashy, but it's not a simple "back beat" by any means. Billy's got the stage, and like the Dragon, he's set the stage on fire.
About a minute or so later, Mickey comes in on the lowest toms. You can just mentally picture him, with his "bone" percussion sticks, now almost matching Billy beat for beat, but only on the 2 lowest frequency toms. This is the kind of low frequency sound (right around 80-100 Hz, which is a little lower than most home audio speakers will go without having a subwoofer) that shakes your seat, pounds your ears, the plaster starts to crack and fall off the ceiling from the wonderful low end. But the studio monitors are rattling the nearby picture frames here! The duo then begin a slightly "tribal & primitive" beat, with a smidgen of some free-form jazz in the mix; Billy on the "higher end", Mickey still giving the lower toms, the kick, and 3 smaller metal gongs a real good working over, beating on them like a "red-headed stepchild". Billy's about had his fill, and slowly begins to let Mickey take off on his own.
Billy is now almost totally ceased his percussion, but still has a rhythm beat for Mickey to pick up on. Mickey begins to use some of the MIDI trigger percussion, and then...
Suddenly, you begin to hear an "unusual random noise", and unfortunately, it's one of the MIDI channel cable's dying a slow death. Rather than causing any speaker damage at the venue, the soundboard engineers turn off almost everything Micky's working with. All you hear is the reverberations of the drums and gongs from the on-stage monitors vibrating the equipment. Mickey's playing, but nothing is coming out of the venue speakers! OOPS!
There's one thing I have to say about the sound engineer's the Dead surrounded themselves with (thanks, Phil!): they don't panic, they know how to get things back on track as quickly as possible, and make the necessary repairs on the spot. But tonight, things didn't go quite as planned. While most of the audience actually heard Mickey playing again after a short "interlude" while they switched channels and re-routed some of the MIDI channels directly to the venue's SBD, unfortunately the main soundboard has to be quickly rewired. So, the multi-track digital recorders get put on "pause" while connections are changed, and the levels are (hopefully) near the same as they were originally.
But, to find out if all this is working out or them, the Dead are called back from their break early, by about 10 minutes. That did NOT do Jerry's voice a lot of good. Even though he's not singing at all, he's also not getting as much rest as he, or other band members would normally have gotten.
Now, there was about 3 minutes of "dead space" on the digital master tapes now, and then it picks up after about 30 seconds into the band members playing their instruments in Space (just to get the best set of ballpark audio levels possible). So, I left in all of the "Mickey's percussion echoes" that was recorded, and then took the spot where the band members were being recorded again, and just performed a "longer than normal" crossfade of the two sections (deleting the blank spot on the tape, of course. Normally, I would do a 5 to 7 second total crossfade using a 9 dB "logarithmic curve", but both of the two sections of the recording would sound too "short" with those fades. So, I "overextended it" and made the total crossfade length TWENTY SECONDS! That may seem, without hearing the x-fade, to be a little on the long side, but it made the transition, especially where the musicians had their levels back up, sound as close to "normal" as it's going to get. So, Space, with the Boyz coming back on early, was still good, free-form until the last minute when Jerry and Bruce got into a very nice duet of instruments, each "sensing" the next not to be played.
One thing you'll notice, once Space ends and Jerry goes into a sweet version of Foolish Heart is that the vocals, but not the vocalist's energy, are really lower than normal. The music is a bit more on the subdued side, even the "rocking" songs, such as I Need a Miracle, which followed Foolish Heart, are on the "mild side".
Jerry's voice is on the edge of going when he's finished up with a very mellow, yet still powerful, Standing On The Moon. He's become, like the "Maxwell House Coffee" slogan says, good to the last drop. He's giving "of himself" to make sure the audience is having a wonderful time. And rest of the band is very much aware of what's going on, so they're not "pushing" the songs to make them louder, faster, or more energetic. They're just "following Jerry's lead"; when he's able to belt out a few of the verses, or even only a couple of words, the band backs him up... and when ol' Jer has to "back off", the Boyz follow suit. Wonderful working chemistry this night.
Some of you may have heard lackluster energy shows from the Boyz... could have been the first night of a long run, after they'd been on hiatus for a few weeks, sometimes during a long Fillmore or Oakland run... one of the shows may have suffered a bit in overall intensity... and other times, a tour had just drained them, and it sounded almost like a "chore" for them to be playing that night. I was actually at a couple of these during the mid-70's. I was still glad to hear them play, and I didn't feel cheated in any way because they weren't "on" for those shows. I came out of the show with a good sense of satisfaction, of having just been there with the crowds, being part of the "energy of the whole", I didn't get the "WOW!" feelings I've gotten from other shows.
Sure, this show isn't stellar, compared with many others, but Garcia's voice was really the only thing really "not all there". Jerry's musical playing was first rate and MORE than "made up" for what his voice wasn't able to contribute; Hornsby played what I felt to be one of his best shows (I haven't heard more than 20-25), so there could be quite a few others... I'm just going by the shows I've heard and have in my "Kindness library" and at friends' houses; Phil is still "out there"; Bobby contributed with the long Desolation as well as his playing; Billy and Mickey, I don't think anything needs to be said, really. They're ALWAYS there! And I have to give credit to the engineers and technicians who got the channel problems solved in the best and fastest possible ways... they kept the audience "fed" with the audio; although it may not have been the "best mix" or levels while the repairs and adjustments were going on; they kept the crowd happy!
PERSONAL RATINGS: (on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being excellent)
Audio Mix: 9.4 (with Jerry's vocal problems, and Phil's low levels for 2 songs considered)
Audio Quality: 9.8 (the pause, and subsequent cross-fade during Space's technical problems included)
Energy Level: 9.0
Show "Completeness": 10.0
Song Selection: 9.5 (due to Jerry's vocal problems, but his wanting to actually sing more songs!)
Surprises: The number of song Jerry sang, to make sure the audience was given "what they paid for" (and more!)

Comments: Band members make comments throughout show regarding the mix, presumably to prompt a change. * 01:27 - Bob utters the almost unforgivable - "give me less garcia" and then "now he's gone" @ 1:44. High-hat cymbals are oddly prominent in the mix at times. Strange noise at 02:34 (cymbal?) d1t01.

An above average audience recording with a crowd that can carry a tune, clap in time - must be that miami rhythm machine.
Originally tracked on 3 discs, the d2>d3 transition was restored to seamlessness using soundforge 5 and then re-tracked onto 2 80 minute discs.

Notes: Disc II currently requires an 80min CD, but if you move drums to the beginning of Disc III, you can use all regular CDs. The only problem there is that Terrapin stops very abruptly, and it's more or less silent at the point between drums and space. Also, the very end of Morning Dew is cut.

update - 2/03.
note - there were sector boundary errors on all tracks from the original set of SHNs. in addition, there were noncanonical headers on all tracks from the first set (likely of no audio consequence). to correct these technical problems, the SHN's were first converted to WAV, performed the line command shntool fix *.wav on each set's worth of wavs independently, and in addition performed a "shntool strip *.wav" on the first set's wav's. the files were then recompressed to SHN in seekable format and distributed.

(1) "[The PMB mics] were made by a now defunct German company, about 15 years ago. The mic's are self powered (AA batt in each), the 2 sets of capsules that I have are the shotguns (about 12" length) and the small capsules which have a figure-8 pick-up pattern. Balanced output at the mic. They were owned by a speaker designer from England. Before working w/ Home audio, he worked w/ pro sound. He did lots of recording @ small to large venues in the UK. He recorded for broadcasts. He stuck w/ these mic.s through the end of his recording days."

Comments:
- average audience recording without much low end. moderately intrusive crowd noise.
- d2>d3 transition now seamless.
- d/o at end of IKYR removed using soundforge 5.
- originally tracked on 3 discs, this one easily fits on 2 80 minute discs. Some may find the break in If Shoe Fits > NSB aesthetically unpleasing. - compendium doesn't list this transition as being present, but there is no clear pause in the music between the two songs, just a sharp break, which i've tracked accordingly.

Notes:
At least one other SHN version of this show circulates as
of April 7, 2002. The previous version circulates with an "if
any digital editing" boilerplate. This new version is a direct
copy from a DAT clone, and has undergone no digital editing
of any form.
There are some problems with the recording at the end
of "That Would Be Something" and the beginning of "Drums".
Sounds like it could be a mic overloading. Also, during
various points of the second set, soundboard static is
audible. It is most noticeable at the end of "Foolish Heart"
and at the end of "Sugar Magnolia". These flaws are believed
to exist on all circulating copies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were sector boundary errors on all tracks on the original SHN's. I performed a SHNTOOL fix on the wav's for each set and re-encoded the tracks to seekable SHN. The md5s differ from a prior re-release of these SHN's in which the SHNTOOL fix was performed on the entire show, rather than on each set individually. Also the previously "fixed" shns were not seekable - these are.

Comments:
-2 second d/o at 7:51 of He's Gone removed w/ cdwav.
-Levels are extremely high throughout with occasional clipping/compression. nevertheless, the performances are worth the technical problems and this is the only SBD source i've seen of this show - Chris L. Thanks to Braverman for 'turning me on' to this show.

Comments:
80 minute discs required for both.
* d1t07 (Eternity) from AUD source: FOB B&K 4006 omni's source (Marc Nutter/Bill Gardner seed). + 6 dB gain was applied using sound forge 5 to the original wav file to bring the levels in line with the sbd source.
Originally discs were tracked on two discs with break coming with a fade out in terrapin to end disc 1 - fortunately there was enough overlap to restore the disc break to seamlessness.
Lineage lists only 1 analog gen though the recording is a bit too hissy.
