| Notes | The first set of this show sounded radically different than the second. The midrange was cranked up really high, so the guitar was overpowering and the vocals were shrill. Very little bass could be heard. Because of this and the acoustical characteristics of the venue all I could hear where I was sitting was the thump of the kick drum, the snare, and a wall of white noise. The vocals sounded like they were coming from behind me to the left. In fact, I could hear sound coming from every direction EXCEPT that of the stage. I couldn't even tell what was being played. At least the recorder was more directional than my ears and the recording sounds much better. All that changed for set 2. The sound was great. It was like a totally different band. Ther first set was the radio-friendly pop Rush of the last 20 years, but the 2nd was the prog metal band they were before Signals. The sound guys even mixed it like they were their own opening act, sabotaging the sound for set 1, then making it right for set 2. I had a bit of a problem withthe people in front of me standing up repeatedly throughout the performance. I've got a bad back and can't stand for long periods, so being forced to stand in order to see/hear didn't sit well with me (excuse the pun). The sound gets a bit muffled in spots wherer I was slow to get up. You also hear me finally snap and start yelling at people to sit down during the 2112 intro tape. Some technical problems mar the first 32 minutes of set 2. It seems the level control switch on the side of the recorder accidentally got flipped from manual to high during the set break. Because of the need for stealth I didn't notice this for about a half hour. Therefore the first part of set 2 is oversaturated and distorted. I cleaned this up as best I could, but it's still obvious. Fortunately my partner, Binko, was a couple of sections away and got a good capture. |
