Notes Audience (presumed) recording of Phil Lesh playing trumpet with the San Mateo Jazz Band and performing some compositions he wrote - think Big Band - Swing jazz style. Earliest recorded music from any member of the Grateful Dead; shn(1)>cda(1) ***Phil Lesh performs the trumpet on this earliest known recording of any member of the Grateful Dead. The music is swinging big band jazz. Lesh is introduced as the composer of Whale Trail and Finnegan’s Awake. Upon announcement of his name, some mild clapping can be heard. All in all, this is somewhat interesting. I’m not a huge big band jazz aficionado so I doubt I’ll hear this one again. Overall, this Phil Lesh et al performance was at best average and is recommended only for its novelty.***
