-----------------------------------------

I actually recorded this show twice during the late seventies from BBC radio broadcasts. First time, having no idea what the setlist would be, I ended up running out of tape during the medley - like many others I'm sure! But when the Beeb broadcast the show the second time, I was ready. Armed with two brand new chrome cassettes and having spent ages tuning my radio for best reception, I captured what subsequently became my favourite all time Yes recording.

I've transferred the show to CDR at least twice before and some of you will have a copy. But recently, having acquired new hardware, software and a whole load of experience, I decided to revisit the original cassettes to see if I could improve on my previous efforts. Unfortunately the cassettes are now showing their age and I wasn't sure I could improve the overall sound that much. But I figured it's worth one more try. It was at this point that Dave (zerosun) kindly offered me his copies of both the american broadcast and the audience version. Thanks Dave.

Once captured to hard disc, the raw audio had some tape hiss removed using Younglove's script for Cooledit 2000 - modified to ensure I didn't loose any music. Easy enough to check as the script allows you to listen back to the noise that will be removed - hearing nothing recognisable as music on there meant I could continue. Next the result was EQ'ed; a modicum of bass and a little treble were added. The abrupt tape flip after ST was cross-faded with audience noise from the same show to run seemlessly (as I could) to the next track. Finally, I took Madrigal from Dave's american broadcast disc and matched near as I could to the SQ to my original before splicing it in. I did consider adding the rest of the show from Dave's audience discs but the sound quality was so different, in the end I decided not to.

By today's standards, it may not be the best FM recording around but over the years I've come to love every note and imperfection. I hope you enjoy it too.

Regards
Tony

NOTES on AWAKEN:

There is a "dropout" at 37 seconds into Awaken (d2t04) that
lasts just under a second. During this time, there is no
piano sound, but the audience sounds (specifically a whistle)
ARE audible. This suggests that either the piano actually
was silent for a second (Wakeman could have used the pedal to
silence it) or the feed to the soundboard was momentarily
interrupted. But since the audience sounds continue
uninterrupted, it doesn't appear to be a recording glitch.

UPDATE!
In actuality, it appears that the BBC (for the 1970s broadcast)
edited out about 1 second at this apparent "dropout" (which
turns out to be a poor edit). If you listen to an unedited
version of the soundboard recording, Wakeman lets his note ring
out, lifts his finger for silence, then plays the final note of
the Awaken piano intro. On this TTSL-EE version, an edit was
made by the BBC before the note fully rang out, and about 1 full
second was clipped at this point.

From Tony:
In fact, if you listen closely to Wakeman's piano introduction
[on the TTSL-EE version], there appears to be a couple of minor
edits and I'd always assumed these were to remove obvious sound
problems on the BBC's original recording prior to broadcast.
Obviously, the whole show also had to be edited for the two
broadcast slots but I wouldn't expect such edits within songs.

NOTE on MEDLEY (v.2):

In the original sound file received from Tony, there was a very
clumsy jerk in the sound at 26:48 of d1t05 as the crowd sound comes
in. It sounded like a tape being pulled through too quickly.
I deleted the tiny glitch and crossfaded the post-glitch portion of
the track with the pre-glitch portion of the track. The crossfade
overlap was approximately 2-seconds long, thus this track (and
therefore disc one) is 2 seconds shorter than the non-corrected
version. The edit was performed such that the size of the file was
still a multiple of 2352 bytes, and thus properly cut on a sector
boundary. This was verified using SHNtool:

Before: 289895760 bytes; cut on sector boundary: yes
After: 289505328 bytes; cut on sector boundary: yes

Tony approved of the edit and the distribution of this corrected
version of the Medley. -jcb, Oct.2002
