| J-Card Comment | Final night of the 2011 Olympia North American tour. I haven't seen BF since the last Roxy Music show in Los Angeles (2001) and haven't seen a solo BF show since the Bete Noire tour (1988), so it was really nice to see this beautiful show. I actually couldn't tell BF was sick until he spoke after "Don't Stop The Dance" when his voice was obviously raspy. I doubt the outdoor venue helped his condition, considering how quickly he put his scarf back on after initially taking it off (and I have to say, I don't think anyone else can wear a scarf in so many appealing ways as this man!). He appeared to be enjoying himself and seemed truly humbled by the applause from the crowd--especially before the encore and at the end of the show. And what a remarkable group of musicians he had on stage with him (Paul Thompson and Chris Spedding were particularly amazing). BF did mention that Oliver Thompson injured his hand in Chicago, so Jeff Thall had been filling in since then. Oliver was willing to come out for the encore and play guitar at this show, though. Once again, the Greek was a haven of non-stop talkers. There was a group of loud people who arrived near the end of "The Main Thing" and there's a bit of minor phasing in "Oh Yeah" as people moved around in the row in front of me. Also in the row in front of me was a pack of annoying people. One of them, who was three seats over to the right, had a very loud clap. To his left was a girl and to her left was a man with a hat. The girl had an insanely loud whistle and when she later moved into the free seat directly in front of me (to the left of the hat man), her whistle and the loud clapper got even louder (because he was no longer being blocked by her). The girl and the hat man also kept leaning in to talk to one another. They weren't heard when they spoke, but it was extremely annoying because I had to lean in the opposite direction of their heads every time they decided to talk or not talk. It was like this for the entire show due to how the rows are almost on an even level in this section of the North Terrace I was in (the person in front of you is already blocking one's view of the stage, which is made worse if that person keeps moving around). Another noise is that at the end of "Tara," that loud clapper closed up his plastic popcorn bag, so you'll hear that. Actually, most of the talking you'll hear came from the people behind me. It began when they arrived during "Slave To Love" and had a lengthy discussion about their seats. They can heard throughout the show from that point on. They aren't as loud on this recording as they were at the show, but they were still a bunch of rude asshats. The loudest talking takes place in "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," "Don't Stop The Dance," "Oh Yeah," "Like A Hurricane," "Tara," "Avalon," "Love Is The Drug," "Let's Stick Together" (which also has some random clapping along) and "Hold On, I'm Comin'." I was without a battery box at this show and the mics I used did not pick up the pre-show PA music at all, so I had to set the Edirol on High Gain. There was some loud clapping between songs, so I had to apply Hard Limiter to bring that down a few dBs. I also added some bass and amplified the recording, but you'll probably have to adjust your own eq/volume to your liking. Just beware of the applause between tracks because it is very loud compared to the music. Please support the artist by buying his official releases and merch (he had so much printed material signed!). |
