Fox Theatre

5/19/77 Fox Theatre Atlanta, GA The vast majority of copies in circulation suffer from what appears to be a master reel flip during the jam in "Playin' in the Band", thanks to an alternate soundboard source, we now know what we were missing during that 1:43. Enjoy! Sources: Master Soundboard Reel > Reel to Reel > DAT > CDR Alternate Soundboard source-purportedly derived from a cassette master- supplies the patch in "Playin' in the Band" (d3t02) from 7:40 thru 9:23 A third Soundboard source- MSR>RR>RR>DAT- is used for an 0:11 patch in "Sugaree" (d1t02) from 5:22 thru 5:33 Made possible through the usual, and ever growing, group of suspects/mental patients. I found that from about 2:55 in Samoson until about 3:35 in He's Gone the right channel drops way down. I used Goldwave just to boost the right channel during this section. It's not perfect, but it's as good as it gets. This show is definitely worth keeping.

Frankenstein 04:50 According to a recent Entertainment Weekly article, this is Page's most memorable show *** Tracking Notes: Note that as tracked, disc 2 requires an 80 minute disc. You may move Harry Hood and Tweezer Reprise to disc 3 if you wish to use 74 minute discs. I choose to use an 80 minute CD-R for disc 2 to maintain the consistancy of the second set (and since it times out so darn perfect for an 80 minute disc!) *** General Notes: This source is a purported SBD/Aud matrix > cass/0 > DAT (as noted at http://www.freedumb.net/sbd/sbdlist.html), however this lineage is questionable. There is a cut at 45:07 in the first set, however this sounds like a DAT cut or digi dropout, as opposed to an analog tape flip (I left this cut as it existed from the original DAE, rather than editing, because it occurs during a song (Scent of a Mule). Another reason I question the analog generation is because there is zero perceptible analog hiss anywhere in this recording. Also, analog tapes tend to stretch as they are used, and people usually get between 46 and 48 minutes per side of a 90 minute tape. 45:07 is considered an odd place for an analog flip to occur. Also, there is no noticeable cut at around the 90 minute mark in the show (where the next tape flip should occur). As for my skepticism for the SBD/AUD matrix, there are moments when I would swear this source is true, however the noticeable echo and reverb normally associated with audience tapes from indoor arenas (MSG in this case) is quite noticible. If this is not an SBD/Aud Matrix, this source would likely be an FOB, since the audio presence is very "up front." There is a well circulated FOB Schoeps CMC3/mk4 source from 12/29/94. This 12/30/94 source may very well be from the same rig and taper, however this is pure speculation. *** Editing Notes: Removed cut at the end of Poor Heart (this was at the 63:13 mark in the show, probably from the original DAT > CD conversion since the next track (Tweezer) is over 21 minutes in length, and thus would put the total disc time over 74 minutes. Removed a .5 second skip at the end of Poor Heart, probably a DAE artifact since this would be at the end of the CD-R that was EAC-ed. Removed the fade and cut between YEM and Purple Rain (end of disc 2 on the original DAE) Removed the cut during the crowd noise between Tweezer Reprise and Frankenstein (79:16). This cut sounds as if it came from the master DAT (perhaps the taper stopped his/her deck between set II and the encore). --- Mike Wren, 11/30/00

I also added a bit of leader from another source to piper(the start of set 2) because a couple notes of piper were missed on the master. So @ 52 seconds into piper you hear the splice. The notes are correct but you hear the difference from being way back in the tapers section to fob. So the spliced source for the first 52 seconds of crowd noise before piper is Schoeps MK41/CMC6>SX-M2>DAP1 (in tapers section). Thanks to mikey for the smokin tapes. enjoy~ Compiled 6-18-01 (edlhubermj18@mail.uww.edu) ========================================================= NOTE: I received these .shns from the person who converted them originally (edlhubermj18@mail.uww.edu), and found, using shntool, that 3 tracks were not cut on sector boundaries. They were: d1t09 d2t01 d3t04 d2t01 definitely had to be fixed, as it caused a nasty click during the transition from d2t01 to d2t02 when listening to the audio on a CDR burned in DAO mode. d1t09 and d3t04 were fixed for good measure as well; whenever shows start to be put on new media (DVD-R?) and are subject to new tracking, this show can be sequenced in any way desired without any problems. Original sector boundary errors found using: SHNTOOL version 1.01 Copyright 2001 Jason Jordan (shnutils@freeshell.org) .shn utilities page: http://shnutils.freeshell.org/ After sector boundaries were fixed, I converted back to SHNv3 from .wav using MKWact, and renamed all files back to their original filenames, removing the '-fixed' appended to each file by shntool, and redid the .md5s to match the new files (this is the only set of .shns from this show *from this new DAT source* that is available, so having the '-fixed' indicator wasn't necessary; the .shns with errors were never circulated before being fixed). RECORDING COMMENTS: Aside from what is written above about the lead-in source spliced for Piper (d2t01; a very minor portion was missing from this FOB source), there is only one questionable noise I can hear on this show after about 4 listens. At 1:39 of d2t08 (Brian and Robert), there is a pop in the left channel. I am 99.9% sure it is a balloon pop, and not a digital error. What does that mean? This show is clean! Please circulate if you enjoy this new FOB source of this great show over any others already out there! Compiled 7-18-01 (jriordan35@aol.com) downloaded from phatdats.etree.org / www.phatdats.com

After several examples of different types of throat singing, Paul Pena introduced 'Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac' as his last song, and seemed like he was going to end his set. Then, someone came on stage and whispered to him. After playing Swing Low and thanking the crowd, he introduced SCI who played with him on two songs and then left the stage for another 1/2 hour or so. Many people were still outside for what seemed to be an unrehearsed and impromptu opener.

I did the best I could to edit the thumping and static that showed up on the tapes. Again this is not due to any taping flaws it was coming from the sound. If you don't like it then find another source. Editing was done using Nero Wave Editor on the following: d1t03, t04, t05, t06, and on d2t01.
