Tour notes:
So the story continues about a few college kids who had a thing for the Grateful Dead AND recording live music.

After the summer tour we listened avidly to all the tapes, but also were just savvy enough to realize we should not play the master recordings too many times. We made copies of all the masters, many copies and would keep one or two on hand which we termed "safety copies". Those would go on Maxelll XL-II or XL-IIs tapes and be the ones we would spin multiple copies of. BY this time, we were all 3rd/4th year students so we lived in a 3 bedroom flat in a large house off campus. We must have had as many as 8 to 10 cassette decks in there by the spring of '83 and were constantly spinning copies, of either our masters or other's masters and prized audience recordings from the time.

We decided we had to do several things, one of which was try to never patch into people again as that almost guaranteed you some cuts in the recording.Through our interest in the multi-dimensional aspects of stereo recording we had found that utilizing a type of microphone configuration named Binaural would simulate what the brain heard especially when played back through headphones. So between the second week of August, the starting of school, and the onset of the Dead's Fall tour with two shows near us we found a set of binaural headphone/microphones made by JVC. Somehow Mike located them in either Boston or Portland ME, so we drove there to purchase the mics and use them at the Cumberland County Civic Center Grateful Dead concert.

The recording is not anywhere close to the best or finest we ever made. But it is pretty even acoustically with only a few glitches on the master. Listen to it with headphones to enhance the experience as the binaural recording is intended to be heard. You can adjust your EQ for loudspeaker playback to make it a bit less "airy". The post drums sound quality is marred a bit by distortion coming from the PA along with a bit of oversaturation on our master. Overall though, for a taste of 1982 Dead, and the Duprees Diamond Blues, the first set Throwing Stones we labeled as "Ashes, Ashes" since the band had yet to tell us the proper title, and the Spanish Jam>Other One I would say this one is worth at least one listen.

The backstory to this show will be continued on the next memory blast- 9-24-1982, Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The teaser is, at the Portland show, Mike had to go to the Soundboard after the show to hand an acoustic plot of the Carrier Dome to Dan Healy during which time a naked guy chased our friend Karen around the floor near the soundboard and security had to be called to "collect" him.
