The tour story:
All metal tapes for this date. Excellent overall tone and bass in this recording, a little bit of audience participation, but not too distracting. The day was hot and the boys seem tired but the Bertha comes out of the gate strong. Jerry's vocals on Loser and Brown Eyed Women are so strong with an emotion behind them which often gets forgotten over time and the passing fancy of the man as a myth or icon. When Jerry sang a tune, especially one of the iconic ballads, he put this energy into the words that was unique and I feel one of the base aspects of his musical persona inside of the Grateful Dead zeitgeist. He felt it, really hung on those words in Stella Blue or Wharf Rat, explored the meanings of the lyric with his intonations and due to the "in the now" nature of the Dead's music often these intonations would be different given the set and setting. Throwing down a "Don't Ease Me In" mid set shows a certain end of the tour attitude and they rock it out with Brent crushing the Hammond B3 solo. Nice harmonies and guitar on Music Never Stopped.

set 2 features some slow versions of the songs, no the tapes weren't slow, the band was wilting in the heat. Every mention of this show on LMA or dead.net mentions the heat. Out of space Jerry delivered a pretty version of Wheel which Phil just kept buoying up with that 6 string. I think the sound crew must have found a different electronic path for Phil's rig by the Red Rocks shows. An unusual six song second set but the Scarlet through Truckin is 38 minutes. Some deadheads on the LMA seem to like this version of Scarlet > Fire. I find myself drawn to this version of Truckin'; about half way through they do a half spoonful, half wang dang lick then Garcia just gets all bluesy with Phil bustin other one hints leading into space (and no Other One!). The space into Wheel is more melting but the tune is delicately laid down by Jerry and Brent atop Phil's anchor.
