The tour story:
This show was highly anticipated, a Saturday night at a brand new venue in Indy. Tickets were at a premium due to the smaller size than most summer tour venue. I decided to miracle someone's friend who had not seen a show since 1980. I figured maybe I would get in on a late arrival's extra, but it was not to be. I spent the whole show in the parking lot hanging with folks who drank a lot of beer. The parking lot was scattered around the newly designed complex as the show was in the middle of this sports tennis facility. From the outside the place did look like a huge Texas High School football complex.

The show is completely different in feel and attack of the songs than the previous few shows. The 'Jack Straw' opener had real song energy, not just used as an opening, let's all get in tune and in sync, entree'. 'The Far From Me' in the middle of the first set was an unusual placement for the song, although they did play with its' placement during this tour. Although the official setlist has 'Ramble on Rose' straight into 'Lost Sailor' we had to flip at that point, but I presume there were never too many Rose > Sailor's. Just another out of many twists the band threw out this night. The transition into 'Saint of Circumstance' is sublime then Bobby and the band just take OFF, such a sweet version in my opinion. The Deal even had a JGB feel to it, especially near the end Jerry solos, he just soars into set break.

Second set was stellar. These nights and types of song selection are what I term "Classic Grateful Dead", the entire Shakedown > Playing > Terrapin > Rhythm Devils >Playing sequence is a gem to behold all these years later. Your opinion is best, but let me say this was a barn burner on a tennis court. Coming out of Playing, Weir does the whistle blowing at the start of 'Truckin' which has the band pumping out their trademark road tune segueing into a short but Weir fueled 'Spoonful'. A very short 'Stella Blue'led to a 'GDTRFB' > 'One More Saturday Night' ending. All in all a solid set with some powerful vocal moments.
