The tour story:
We all stayed at Chris Kidwell's apartment, or should I say some of us slept outside in our vehicle as his apartment was pretty small and there was at least 10 of us! Mike Davis says that was the coldest he'd ever slept out in until this year's 2021 Texas weather disaster. Some were sleeping inside of Sean's bread van but some, including Mike slept up on the roof. I know we were priveleged to be inside Chris' apartment, but that must have been because we were add ons to this tour! Driving north into Maine, the State troopers were standing at the toll booths looking in every car, both at the entrance to Maine and the first Portland exit. Many people were pulled over and some arrests were noted in the papers. I believe none of us were put through that wringer.

This show is well reviewed by the community so I will point out only the obvious or missing mentions. The first set is solid, with Jerry standing out on the Candyman and Duprees Diamond Blues. Someone points out that Garcia sang the Duprees lyrics perfectly. The Brent keyboard tone with Jerry's soloing and Phil's bouncy bass make it the highlight of the set for me. The Music Never Stopped opener got the crowd buzzing, and when he missed the "band beyond description" line, we were all laughing with Bobby.

The "story" of this show is the second set with it's wild twists and turns of setlist unpredictability, the Day Tripper bringing the crowd to a steady ROAR, and Jerry barely leaving the stage for drums. As someone said, Jerry was steering the band through a drums and space essentially pulling the Wheel out of drums with barely any Space at all. The supposition is because Mickey and Billy couldn't keep up with him for China Doll and flubbed the drum parts for almost the entire song, so Jerry stayed out there to "shadow" Mickey, ultimately showing him how it is done with the monster Wheel, reverse Playing in the Band **, and a disjointed start to Daytripper. Many people claim 1985 was a down year for the Dead, but it had it's ups as well; this show is a great example of how they often created a thing of beauty from the fire of musical chaos. And then we walked out to almost 3 inches of snow on the ground. Portland always was a great place to catch the Grateful Dead.

** The best explanation I've heard for the Playin' Reprise preceding the Playin', is that the song had been started in Long Island (3-27-1985), and was completed in Portland. Unlikely story, but there it is!
