the tour story:
Second day in Providence. If I recall, one of us took Sean up to Boxborough to retrieve more stuff or else helped him rent the station wagon they finished the tour in. As mentioned in the Spring Tpur 1985 piece, I wanted to show Eric around town as it was becoming one of my favorite places to expereince deadhead traveling having been there three years in a row. At that time, Providence was still the old school mafia controlled political machine and everything "governmental" about the place had that calm disorder of heavy handed kleptocracy. Great Italian food and sea food of course. The Civic Center at that time was one of the smaller venues on the tour, comparable in size to CCCC in Portland.

An Alabama Getaway opener was a pleasant choice and got the show off quickly. The Jack Straw which followed has that typical Healy dialing in of things, but by the end, Phil and Jerry were dialed into a fingerpicking duel and the band rocked us out with this classic GD tune. The Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance featured Weir in top vocal form with Phil bouncing along underneath.

Second set opened with a brief I need a Miracle into an oddly placed and timed Crazy Fingers. Samson and Delilah steamed into a stompin' GDTRFB. The country twangs were hailed with much jubilation as Brent pumped some Hammond B3 and harmony vocals into the blend. Jerry and Billy keyed in on a fast paradiddle run as the band stepped offstage and slipped into drums but not before Jerry foreshadowed the Lovelight as he was the last one of the four to leave stage. Most of post drums is quickly played with minimal jamming. Until the Lovelight, which got the full on Bobby treatment and even Healy got into the mix with some Aural exciter vocal action near the end. U.S. Blues took us out into the night antici[ating the final weekend of the tour through Philly.
