NOTES:
* Thanks to Lee Farber for the original seed!
* There was some re-mastering done to clean up the original
tape hiss from this classic show. The processes I took are
as follows:
1) Amplified both discs 175% across the board.
2) Sampled a section of silence to obtain a decent noise floor
sample (25,000 sample points used).
3) Applied this sample against both discs at 64 percent.
4) Applied a graphic equalizer to boost the high and low spectrums
(specifically between 600 - 800 Hz and 8k & 10 kHz).
***Note: I cut everything above 11 kHz 18dB because nothing
existed above that freq. range on the original recording.
* I've also included the EAC logs from my initial DAE
(the files that have the .eac extension)
* If you have any additional question, please let me know:

A rare slice of Phish history from outside VT, before they toured regularly. ATO was a very partying deadhead frat, famous for good parties with an emphasis on music. This show may have been the highpoint of a long history of excellent bands at this fraternity (which has since been disbanded and re-formed with new, more 'appropriate' membership, as dictated by the national chapter AND the school - so divergent was this esteemed brotherhood with the general tenets of frat/college idiocy... what a drag. This house was a long-standing oasis amidst the rest of the usual campus frat-guy ghetto).
We hired the band for 00 on a recommendation from a friend who'd seen them and knew they'd more than fit the bill for our party - he was right in every respect (although they were so mind-blowing that even a bunch of hardcore deadheads were spooked by the ruthlessly cascading nature of it all and had to leave the room, esp. during WHIPPING POST - though it's also worth noting that and at least 10-15 of us never left about a 20 foot radius from the band while they were playing - no way you could've pulled us away from that - we knew right away this band would go far, though I doubt any of us would've predicted just how huge they've become now 13 years later).
This recording was made with the band's blessings straight off the board, but the guy who did it got pretty wrapped up in the party (who can blame him!) and didn't tend the deck as well as he could've, hence low-levels on the master and some nasty tape flips. It seems they played a third set that is not on our tapes anywhere (proven by the existence of TWO "we'll be right back"s on the tapes we DO have). We KNOW they played BOWIE (as just the end of it made a re-flip onto the first set master cassette, hence the fade-in to FUNKY BITCH, the beginning of which BOWIE wrote over), and BBFCM too (which I remember well, as I laughed my ass off!), though this was not on the master and has never been heard since.
Hopefully the band has this whole show in their archive somewhere and it gets out some day - I'm quite sure there may be other songs (we knew nothing of the band at the time except that they came highly recommended by a trusted source, so we have no setlist beyond the tapes). I'm pretty sure Languedoc taped it, as our feed came out of his deck.
SLAVE actually came after Whipping Post in set II, but was paired up with the stranded tail-end of Bowie at the end of DISC1 due to space constraints on DISC2.
I dumped this show into my pc from the original VERY HISSY LOW LEVEL cassette and cleaned it up with SOUNDFORGE's Noise Reduction feature - basically just measured the hiss and removed it from the whole file after many less-than-successful attempts at getting a good EQ with various plug-in's. It helped ALOT and made this show much more listenable, but did create sort of a weird sonic by-product too, esp. during cymbal-heavy sections of the songs. If anyone out there is more expert than me at fixing this kind of thing up, please email me at scott@magnetosphere.com and I'll get you the original master .wav's and gladly let you have at it - I'd love to get the best-possible mix on this one, for obvious reasons personal AND historic.
Lastly, this is the alleged first known version of I DIDN'T KNOW (according to one of the new Phish compendiums, which, like all others, has this show inaccurately labeled as BURLINGTON, VT). Phish actually drove a few hours from home to our school in upstate NY to play this party for us. I think it was just the band and their white van, along with Languedoc (we were blown away they had guitars made by their soundman!), maybe one girlfriend, and their dog, that little yellow labbish one that's in the LAWNBOY liners - I think you can hear her barking somewhere on this tape). We'd never even heard them before this show, so it was a big eye-opener for all of us, and made many of us fans for life in one fell swoop. A huge highlight for me was being the only one in the room when they sound-checked GOLGI, which blew me away and sent me on an early-evening scramble to recruit friends to come see this great goddamned band! Enjoy.

This is one of my _all time_ favorite Phish shows. I got this directly off
the master cassette, so this is the best possible source. There was a third
set to this show, but the taper's ride needed to leave after the second set,
so unfortunately this is all we have, and the rest is history.

PS - Dolby tip. As this was encoded with Dolby C when it mastered onto cassette,
that means you ideally play it back (decode) with Dolby C. Pass this on to any
analog folks this show goes to, please: Never use Dolby to record, only to play back. |

Disc 3 / Encore
1. Frankenstein 04:50
According to a recent Entertainment Weekly article, this is Page's most memorable show
*** Tracking Notes:
Note that as tracked, disc 2 requires an 80 minute disc. You may move Harry Hood and
Tweezer Reprise to disc 3 if you wish to use 74 minute discs. I choose to use an 80 minute
CD-R for disc 2 to maintain the consistancy of the second set (and since it times out so darn
perfect for an 80 minute disc!)
*** General Notes:
This source is a purported SBD/Aud matrix > cass/0 > DAT (as noted at
http://www.freedumb.net/sbd/sbdlist.html), however this lineage is questionable.
There is a cut at 45:07 in the first set, however this sounds like a DAT cut or digi dropout,
as opposed to an analog tape flip (I left this cut as it existed from the original DAE,
rather than editing, because it occurs during a song (Scent of a Mule). Another reason I
question the analog generation is because there is zero perceptible analog hiss anywhere
in this recording. Also, analog tapes tend to stretch as they are used, and people
usually get between 46 and 48 minutes per side of a 90 minute tape. 45:07 is considered
an odd place for an analog flip to occur. Also, there is no noticeable cut at around the
90 minute mark in the show (where the next tape flip should occur).
As for my skepticism for the SBD/AUD matrix, there are moments when I would swear this source
is true, however the noticeable echo and reverb normally associated with audience tapes from
indoor arenas (MSG in this case) is quite noticible. If this is not an SBD/Aud Matrix, this
source would likely be an FOB, since the audio presence is very "up front." There is a well
circulated FOB Schoeps CMC3/mk4 source from 12/29/94. This 12/30/94 source may very well be
from the same rig and taper, however this is pure speculation.
*** Editing Notes:
Removed cut at the end of Poor Heart (this was at the 63:13 mark in the show, probably from the
original DAT > CD conversion since the next track (Tweezer) is over 21 minutes in length, and thus
would put the total disc time over 74 minutes.
Removed a .5 second skip at the end of Poor Heart, probably a DAE artifact since this would be at
the end of the CD-R that was EAC-ed.
Removed the fade and cut between YEM and Purple Rain (end of disc 2 on the original DAE)
Removed the cut during the crowd noise between Tweezer Reprise and Frankenstein (79:16). This cut
sounds as if it came from the master DAT (perhaps the taper stopped his/her deck between set II
and the encore).

The sound quality of this now-liberated BOOTLEG CD is excellent. Most of the copies of this show that I have seen circulate without Runaway Jim, as is the case here, but the exceptional sound more than makes up for the incompleteness.

- Cleaned up digispots @ 3:24 (0.12sec.), 6:03 (0.031sec.),

At long last, a complete relatively flawless SHN copy of the Went from FM!!
A bit of FM static in D4, and a few little pops here and there, but this will definately do
the trick until we can obtain a complete, unflawed (no DAE) FM source.

*Before they started the set, the crowd chanted the beginning of "Destiny
Unbound" (in hopes that the band would play it). Trey acknowledged
the chant by saying that he couldn't hear what was being sung; that
it sounded like some kind of "death chant"; and asked if this was
the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice. He then
asked for a volunteer, which was pretty funny. No "Destiny Unbound" was
played or even teased.
**With "Mike-O-Esquandolas" (instead of "Marco").
Cool Covers for these disks can be had at:

The show was SHN'ed to be 3 aud. discs...but it turns out you can fit it on 2 if you just cut out the filler that used to be in there on disc 2. SO i did that and just relisted the tracks on here as numbered. It's all there, all in order....no borken segues.

Sorry about disc2, but the other option was to cut Bowie between the intro
and the hook, and then cut the true jam out of Jim to Starnge Design. Hood
picks up without being jammed into, and for all cuts the music is eactly
split, no fades, for simple reconstruction to different tracking, if you prefer.
Two notes of interest, a spike in The Sloth was slightly dampened (-2dB) so
the entire set was better normalized (both sets normalized). I think this
makes our copy slightly superior to the original DAT. Secondly, the audience
was interrupted between the end of 2 to the E, so I used a fade in/out.

I had to cut a few segues, or it would had been 4 discs with lots of empty space.

comments:
NO DAE, SHNs made from original wave files from the DAT transfer.
no normalization or any changes to the original wave files were performed, except for the addition of fades added to the beginning and end of each set. First 27 seconds of Runaway Jim are messed up - low levels and probably a little music missing, more than likely due to a late start. Great FOB recording otherwise.

* "By request, for a little boy named Sam."
** Third verse was about "The Garden of Infinite Pleasantries,"
instead of the normal verse about Memphis; with "Sneakin'
Sally" teases.
^ Jam out of which sounded very much like "Tweezer Reprise."
^^ With glowstick war.
+ After Tweezer Reprise, Trey explained that the band wanted to
do something to combine ideas from The Clifford Ball and The
Great Went, going into detail about the band/fan artwork from
last year, and announced that the band would do a free-form
ambient jam (lyric-less; nearly an hour long; "in the Brian
Eno style of ambient music"), surrounded by candles that were
made by the audience throughout the day. There were no other
lights used during the jam (the band used only the light from
the candles), which Trey explained is similar to the idea of
what happens during a glow-stick war, with the light for the
band coming from the fans. Because candles were placed througout
the stage, Trey explained that they were in fact playing in a
"temple of fire" (as advertisements for summer tour shows had
announced). After finishing the jam, the band picked up tiki
torches, lit them using the candles, and lit a small stone (?)
temple (which was left burning overnight and throughout the
band's performance on Sunday).

===========================================
* With glowstick war.
+ Long and drawn out; Fish introduces "his band": Trey Anastasio on drums,
Mike "Cactus" Gordon on bass, "Chairman of the Boards" Page McConnell, and
himself as "Bob Weaver." Fish introduces the next song as "a love song about
a turtle" (which would have been "Terrapin"), but instead he performed
Sexual Healing ("a much better song anyway") after "his band" finally ended
"Hold Your Head Up."
++ Includes "Sounds of Love" vacuum solo.
# With "Sexual Healing" teases in the intro.
% "Harry Balls" chant. With glowstick war.
** Fireworks after Harry Hood, lit by long fuse that ran around and above the
stage, then over to an elephant sculpture/float, which was walked around.
^ Henry Mancini cover; see 12-01-92. Trey lit a tiki-torch (that looked like a
"giant fake doobie") and used it to light a fuse which ran up Page's side of
the stage, across the backdrop, down Fish's side of the stage, along the fence
to a giant elephant-shaped structure near the stage, which came to life as
fireworks went off both above it and from behind the stage. Fish made elephant
noises with a trombone. Then, as they played the song, the elephant blew water
out of its trunk (while smoke came from underneath it) and led the crowd
towards the campground.

for the "Blat Boom..." part
** During Seven Below a disco ball was lowered from within the
scoreboard and it began snowing on stage; several dancers in
white with blinking light "stick figure skeletons", dressed
as snow creatures came out and began circling the band on
stage before moving off into the crowd - while in the crowd
several grew into large snow angels by adding stilts
to their costumes; midway during the song snow began falling
on the fans on the floor from a pair of snowmaking rigs on
the right and left sides of the scoreboard above the floor;
shortly before midnight, the snow angels began shining small
spotlights around the crowd, appearing similar to
search lights
