  My Trading Rules:

Thanks for stopping by my list. I'm starting to make some very limited trades right now as time allows. If you are interested in something, shoot me an e-mail. I cannot promise a swap (or a response -- sorry in advance), but if at all possible, I will hook you. I am always very interested in increasing the size of my John Prine, Todd Snider, Gillian Welch, Loudon Wainwright, and 70s-Singer-Songwriter-Crappy-One-Hit-Wonder collections, but then, I'm also pretty much interested in everything. In lieu of writing a "Rules for Trading" list below, let's keep it simple. I'll let you know preferences by email and you do the same; however, since I am finding many traders have different ideas of what "generic" or "bad" discs are, I am offering my only list in this diatribe, my "Outlaw List": Maxell, Memorex, PNY, Teon, Staples, OfficeMax, Verbatim, Imation No show goes on my list until I have had a chance to at least scan it for defects and quality. At any given time, I may have 75 discs on my shelf I haven't had a chance to enjoy. If I see a trend in your picks and I know I have some more shows I've been holding back by those artists, I'll let you know and will scan them if you are interested. I have a lot of fun writing my notes on this list. Some are humorous, some are not humorous (although they were supposed to be), some are factual, some are full of lies; however, any problems with any shows will be recorded in those notes. If you discover a problem I did not catch, I'll gladly replace your shows and update my list. I enjoy this trading-thing and am probably somewhat of an obsessive-collector. Let's introduce each other to some new music, treat each other right, and enjoy the privilege of swapping good tunes. I look forward to hearing from you! Lance

12/10/98 Bomhard Theatre Louisville KY CDR 2 I need to listen to this a little more, but first impressions are a little mixed. It sounds a little too new-agey. Nice sound, though, Yanni.

ABBA

05/25/79 Wembley Arena London England CDR 1 Oh, my! Stellar performance of the hits. I don't know where this was performed, but it's sbd (or FM), clean, and hip-bumping, finger-pointing fun -- not one bad song in the bunch. So, come on and "take a chance, take a chance, ch-ch-ch-ch-chance-chance, take a chance, take a chance, ch-ch-ch-ch-chance-chance" and trade for this.

AC/DC
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
09/03/77 Old Waldorf San Francisco CA CDR 1 Okay audio, but it shows its age. Not as clear as the others.
09/07/77 4 O'Clock Club Ft Lauderdale FL cdr 1
10/16/79 Towson Center - Towson University Towson MD CDR 1 Nice. Angus is okay and all, but you gotta love Bon.
11/02/79 Hammersmith Odeon London England CDR 2 Clean, "in-your face" audio. No real signs of showing its age. Takes you back to when AC/DC had the three most powerful chords and the greatest voice in Rock 'n' Roll. Too bad Bon Scott would be dead three months later.

Allman Brothers Band
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
??/??/69 Idlewild South Outtakes Compilation Compilation CDR 1 A little hiss but clear, studio sound. Highlights: 1) The outro jam with up-front acoustic guitar on Midnight Rider and 2) The 31 minutes of Duane jamming on various blues songs and rapping about Jimmie Rodgers -- highlight within a highlight: Duane claiming he's "f'ing stoned" and asking Jaimoe if he can roll a joint. Heady days, man, heady days....
05/02/70 Swarthmore College Swarthmore PA CDR 2 Audio is a tad rough -- it either gets better as the show progresses or you become accustomed to it. Good performance, but I think for fans only.
07/05/70 Atlanta International Pop Festival Byron GA CDR 2 Decent audio. "Whipping Post" continues between disc 1 and disc 2. May need to re-cut.
03/20/71 The Warehouse New Orleans LA CDR 3 Traded as a sbd but I'm guessing an FM source. It shows some age but is better than many others from this period -- a quality show you can listen to repeatedly and enjoy. Some noticeable edits between tracks. Disc 3 is one 46 minute track. Guess the song....
06/27/71 Fillmore East New York NY CDR 1
08/26/71 A&R Studios New York NY CDR 1
09/16/71 The Warehouse New Orleans LA CDR 3
10/15/71 Syria Mosque Pittsburgh PA CDR 1 Duane Allman's last show; unfortunately, this muddy-hiss-monster sounds like it was recorded in the hole that soon held his body. Sick, yes, but you get the picture.
12/31/73 Cow Palace Daly City CA CDR 4
07/19/79 Merriweather Post Pavilion Columbia MD CDR 2
06/11/92 Roosevelt Hotel Hollywood CA CDR 1 Great acoustic set with Warren Haynes playing a mean Resonator. Nice sbd. First seven tracks on this disc is the Indigo Girls' set prior to ABB.

America
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
??/??/72 Whiskey A Go Go Los Angeles CA CDR 1 A little hiss -- sounds like someone tried to filter it out. Still, can you believe these guys played the Whiskey? Filler is from Holland.
??/??/75 NDR-Studio Hamburg Germany CDR 1 Nice audio for a '75 America gig. First part is the band in a studio, second is from the In Concert series.
07/24/77 Greek Theater Los Angeles CA CDR 1 Great sound. Obviously mastered from vinyl forcing the age-old debate: CD vs. Vinyl. You decide. In the meantime, enjoy America with a horn section.
07/03/78 Universal Amphitheater Los Angeles CA CDR 1 ACTUAL DATE: 07.04.78. For whatever reason, the database would not let me enter the actual date. FM-sourced, fade between Tracks 8 and 9. Track 9 begins the filler that has hiss and overall sub-par audio quality from the actual show date. Regardless, I can't think of any better way to spend my Independence Day than with this great, patriotic band...and in 2003, I'll catch them at Baker Park in Maryland -- 25 years to the day after this gig.
06/30/79 Central Park New York NY CDR 1
??/??/80 "Heard" Compilation Various CDR 1 Varying qualities, mostly with clear but hissy audio.
09/04/82 Blossom Music Center Cuyahoga Falls OH CDR 1 I must say, I have never heard a cleaner, more exhilirating, better-mixed boot. You know why? Because this is a commercial release. I've seen a few people passing this show around (yeah, there are other 'America' fans out there, wiseass), but this show and any 'America' show from the King Biscuit Flower Hour (floating around under a different date) should not be traded. It is my mission to protect the integrity and careers of Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, so if you have this show or know someone who does, please have them make it unavailable for trade. Think about the band members' hungry babies; think about their struggle to fill a 500-seat club; think about how it's just plain wrong to trade any commercial release from any band. (Ouch! (I just fell off my soapbox.))
04/22/85 Bobby's "Cheek To Cheek" Club Winter Park FL CDR 1 A little distant, a lot of high end, but an okay listen as levels adjust a bit. Hey, it's America; whaddaya t'ink I'm gonna say? Fuggedaboudit.
??/??/94 Unknown Hamburg Germany CDR 1 So beautiful, it almost makes me cry. There's an edit between tracks 5 and 6, but outside of that, everything is excellent...well, except for one thing. One of my favorite America songs is "Lonely People". At this particular gig on this particular date (whatever that may have been), it was bassist Bradley Palmer's birthday. His wish was to get a chance to sing lead on that tune. Another reason for my tears....
??/??/95 Unknown Hamburg Germany CDR 1 Another amazing piece of recording. The setlist for this gig is varied from most America performances with versions of "Hope" and "The Last Unicorn" -- collectors will dig this. There are a few minor edits between tracks but probably only there to accommodate television.
06/16/99 Ohne Filter Musik Pur Baden Baden Germany CDR 1 Clean audio and sweet performance of all the hits. Nice to hear "You Can Do Magic".
06/01/01 Long Island Music Fair Westbury NY CDR 2 From the Westbury Music Fair. Another show with that big venue sound: bassy and echoey but an okay daud overall with up-front music. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (two points for knowing their names) display some nice humorous touches to the stories preluding some of the songs.

Andrew Gold
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
02/17/77 My Father's Place Old Roslyn NY CDR 1 Another one of my 70s Two-Hit Wonders; unfortunately for you, only one hit is here -- twice: "Lonely Boy". To hear the other one -- "Thank You for Being a Friend" -- call a Time/Life Operator or tune into a classic episode of "The Golden Girls". The splits are a little off on this recording and there's some low noise/fuzziness. Not the best, but a must-have for you Gold fans (this means you, Rue McClanahan and Bea Arthur).

April Wine
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
??/??/82 Unknown Cedar Rapids IA CDR 1 What a nice surprise. The audio is good and the performance is rockin'...you know, for April Wine. Which song do you remember more? "Just betwen You and Me" or "Sign of the Gypsy Queen"? What? You didn't know the band had two "hits"? My favorite tune: "If You See Kay". My favorite moment: the band asks the crowd to belt-out the words to "If You See Kay", but from the sounds of it, only 12 people knew it giving the band a version of "If You See Kay Off"....Now you get it.

Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
08/27/75 Smilin' Dog Saloon Cleveland OH CDR 1 Decent daud. A tiny bit of hiss noticeable low in the mix at the silences. A little signal noise present at times as well. If you're looking for the big hits, you need to look a little later...for instance, the following show featuring....
10/27/81 The Savoy New York NY CDR 1 ..."Spooky", "Imaginary Lover", and "Champagne Jam". Great audio, but while I get a little nostagic listening to them, I have to think the boys in the Allman Brothers curse their "home" state for producing this group. At least ABB gets a write-up in the VH1 Rock Encyclopedia and my thick Rock Who's Who Reference -- hell, The Association ("Windy", "Cherish") even get a mention -- but I reckon poor ARS missed the writer's deadline somewhere between Paul Anka and the Average White Band.

05/25/02 Lake Eden Art Festival (LEAF) Black Mountain NC CDR 1 sbd. Quirky, quirky chicks. Great musicians, okay vocalists, and another example of why some people should never attempt stage banter (do you hear me, Natalie Maines?). Listening to them talk during this show made me flashback to Moon Unit Zappa and Valley Girl. No, that's not a good thing.

02/22/93 Boulder Theatre Boulder CO CDR 2 This is the Sister Sweetly Release Party. I looked forward to receiving this, but there is a lot of hiss present and a few transition pops. For completists only, I think.
11/29/01 Studio C 97.3 KBCO Boulder CO CDR 1 Featuring songs from the recently released "Riviera" album. Did you even know?
12/31/01 The Fillmore Auditorum Denver CO CDR 3 NYE shows by any band are usually fun.
04/04/02 The Quest Minneapolis MN CDR 2 Nice daud. D2T1 cuts in and has a quick skip at the :07 mark.
02/02/03 9:30 Club Washington DC CDR 2 Nice daud. It's a shame what happened to BHTM. While they were a little unoriginal, they consistently had great grooves and Todd Park Mohr has a great vocal sensibility. One hit album, one hit later, they were booted from the big stages back to clubs like the one where this show was recorded. Hey, I'm down for any small club gig over a stadium tour, but it must be a little shocking to the band, especially after being dumped by their label. Oh, well. Bad luck for them equals better luck for us.
02/08/03 Exit/In Nashville TN CDR 3 A good daud, but the crowd is a little loud and the audio is a little more echoey than teh other '03s listed.
02/14/03 Austin Music Hall Austin TX CDR 2 Another great daud, but as much as I love the band, I sometimes feel they're just going through the motions. This is one of those sometimes.

Bill Monroe
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
03/06/75 Grand Opera House Wilmington DE CDR 2 Great audio with a couple of edits here and there (not too bad). Bill has lost some of his vocal touch as evidenced on "Muleskinner Blues", but, hell, we'll give him a break. The guy started kickin' out this new-fangled bluegrass thang in '45 or so. And don't call it "Old-Time"!
05/21/89 Capitol Plaza Theatre Charleston WV CDR 1

Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
09/19/54 Brown County Jamboree Beanblossom IN CDR 1 Nice and clear, a little age to it, but when you got a guy named Uncle Puny playing bass, you'll overlook most anything.
07/04/61 Oak Leaf Park Luray VA CDR 1 Tiniest signal noise, otherwise decent audio. Hard to believe the Bluegrass Boys played in Luray, a small town just 20 minutes from my house. Today, you'd be lucky to get the Bullet Boys there.
05/04/66 Gaslight Cafe New York NY CDR 1 Good audio with little show of age. A short set, but you get to hear Peter Rowan in his Bluegrass Boys days.
02/13/67 Memorial Union Theatre, U Of W Madison WI CDR 2
08/09/69 Pennsylvania Bluegrass Festival Shade Gap PA CDR 1 Excellent.
04/13/90 The Birchmere Alexandria VA CDR 2 Sbd or FM - a little lite (signal) noise in the background. Skip on T1D1. T2D2 cuts-in, and there are a few minor editing problems throughout.
05/12/90 Holiday Trav L Park Virginia Beach VA CDR 1 Outside of a short drop-out on T1D1, the audio is excellent.

Billy Preston & The God Squad w/ Mick Taylor
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
??/??/73 European Tour '73 Compilation Compilation CDR 1 I love Billy and this show will demonstrate why both The Beatles and the Stones utilized his services so often. Outside of being a good songwriter and possessing a decent voice, his innovative playing was far ahead of its time. Listening to this great-sounding show, I can't help but feel sorry for Mick Taylor who made the unfortunate choice of thinking he was bigger than the Stones. Boy, what a stellar solo career that move produced. Ron Wood must thank Taylor everyday.

Billy Squier
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
03/26/83 The Centrum Worcester MA CDR 1 Where, oh, where have you gone, Mr. Squier? A brilliant show, a brilliant setlist, a not so brilliant career. Like Christopher Cross and his hit album, Billy should have spread all of those great tunes on "Don't Say No" across lesser fare like "Emotions in Motion" and "Rock Me Tonight". Good audio on this gem. OOPS! OFFICIAL RELEASE. I CANNOT TRADE THIS, BUT BUY THE ALBUM TO SUPPORT BILLY.

??/??/00 Compilation(s) Various Various CDR 2 This is the "Tall As Can Be" compilation. Varying qualities on this collection of rareties. Some songs were on the scrapped "Tall" sessions. Crowes collectors will want this but note again the audio varies -- some nice, some okay.

Black Sabbath
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
12/20/70 L'Olympia Paris France CDR 1 Decent audio for an old show from French television --not perfect, but pretty good.
04/06/74 Ontario Motor Speedway Ontario CA CDR 1 Ah, yes, loved my Ozzy way before The Osbournes (in fact, my favorite group of all time is the Sabb -- woo me into trades with some vintage Sabbath (and even some with Ronnie James Dio). This sounds a bit aged, but the vocals are surprisingly crisp and up-front. Very listenable with a couple of rough spots between tracks. Still, get this show; nice Vol. 4 era stuff and a nice version of "Sweet Leaf". (In fact, Ozzy wants nothing more than for you to enjoy a bit of the sweet leaf throughout the entire show -- he's almost pleading!)
08/05/75 Convention Hall Asbury Park NJ CDR 2 What a pleasant surprise! This is one of the best-sounding live Sabbaths I have heard from this time period -- the audio is very good. On the other hand, Ozzy is up to his usual schtick: the stage banter he started in '70 that he didn't feel the need to alter in the slightest with each subsequent year. The innane patter goes a lot like this: Ozzy - "Are you high?" Crowd - "Yeah!" Ozzy - "Are you high?" Crowd - "Yeah!" Ozzy - "So am I!" Please insert "F**k" and its many variations into this conversation whenever you get the urge.
06/19/78 Hammersmith Odeon London England CDR 1 Rough but listenable. Ozzy's mixed a little low, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Once your ears adjust to the audio, it's not too bad. There's a fade-out/in at the beginning of Track 10, the encore.
09/22/78 Selland Arena Fresno CA CDR 1 An okay sounding show, but a bit muddy. Ozzy seems to be going through the motions on this one, and since he would leave the group shortly, I suppose this was actually the case. That's cool with me. I love the Ozzy years, but I was a HUGE Ronnie J. Dio fan. "Sign of the Southern Cross" is a damn-near perfect song.
08/12/80 Providence Civic Center Providence RI CDR 1 Bad stuff, and I don't mean "bad" as in "cool". Very tinny sound, sloppy edits, obvious pops from a vinyl transfer. For fans only.
11/18/80 Sun Plaza Hall Tokyo Japan CDR 1 Surprisingly decent audio. Sometimes Ronnie James is a little low in the mix, but not bad. Give me my Dio!
10/20/83 Quebec City Colisum Quebec QC CDR 2 Rough, muddy audio; still, Ian Gillian powers his throat almost through the thickest of it, especially when the Sab takes-on "Smoke on the Water" (with apologies to Richie Blackmore).
11/04/83 Worcester Centrum Worcester MA CDR 1 Nice audio. A little signal/recording sizzle from time to time, but nothing too intrusive. I've always been thankful Ian Gillan only stayed for one album, but I can't help but dig the "Born Again" tracks -- oh, they're pure crap ("Zero the Hero"? "Hotline"?!), but they definitely stick in my head like a bad but catchy jingle. Of course, they're not as cool as the album cover with the little devil baby(and coincidentally the reason Ian left). In fact, the more I write about it, the more I think "Born Again" might be my favorite comedy album -- that or Styx's "Kilroy Was Here". Ah, now if Dennis DeYoung had joined Sabbath for the "Born Again" sessions....
??/??/85 Seventh Star demos n/a n/a CDR 1 Oh, man....The audio has some background hiss and there are some quick edits, but who cares? This guy, Jeff, on the vocals, he's a laugh-a-minute. He definitely went to the MTV School of How to Be a Rock Star. This had to have been recorded on April 1. No wonder this wasn't meant to see the light of day. That guy is bleeding awful.
04/18/86 Hemisfair Park San Antonio TX CDR 1 This is fun stuff. First, these are demos for "The Eternal Idol" album featuring Ray Gillen on vox; however, his voice never made it on the final pressing as Tony Martin came in and re-recorded everything with his vocals. Second, the bass player for these sessions is anyone's guess at this point -- Bob Daisley and Dave "The Beast" Spitz are both credited on the album, but only Bob actually played. To muddy it up further, neither guy toured with the band (those chores were handled by the incomparable Jo Burt) and an unknown appears playing bass in the video for "The Shining". Third, the drummer. Eric Singer plays drums on the final product, Bev Bevan (formerly of ELO(!)) gets credit for percussion, neither guy toured and left the skin-pounding to Terry Chimes. Who's on the demo is another mystery. One thing is for certain: Tony Iommi plays on the demo, the album, the video, and the tour. What a confusing time for "Sabbath". Oh, yeah, by the way, there's a little lite noise in the mix but nothing too bad. The first 8 tracks are the demo and tracks 9-14 are from a San Antonio gig (with one pop after T9). Whew! Thank you for indulging me. (I know etree's gonna limit the size of my notes one day....)
10/19/89 Osaka Festival Hall Osaka Japan CDR 1 Sound is a little tinny (too much high end) and the vocals are sometimes a little low in the mix. This show features the vocal chops of Tony Martin of the Sabbath "Eternal Idol" era. Rawk on!
08/09/92 Orpheum Theatre Boston MA CDR 2 Dio Mark II. Decent daud with some thumping bass, but you have to put up with a few inferior Sabbath songs such as "Time Machine". Still, I think any song Dio had a hand in writing is a riot. Didn't he have the funniest lyrics?
11/15/92 Pacific Amphitheatre Costa Mesa CA CDR 1 Sabbath Mark VIII. Billed just below the puppet show. Still, I love it and the audio is decent.
??/??/96 8th Star n/a n/a CDR 1 Well, this a better demo than the aforementioned "6th Star" album. At least Geoff "Seventh Star by Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi" Hughes could sing a little. If he was good enough for a version of Deep Purple, he's good enough for Sabbath. Hey, so was Ian Gillan. Coincidence or the work of the devil?

Bruce Springsteen
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
03/09/74 KLOL-FM Studios Houston TX CDR 1 A pristine FM-sourced show. Bruce and a few of the E-Streeters perform some different takes of some at-that-time-not-so-familiar Boss standards (including some interesting polka takes). The interview segments between songs leave a little to be desired (Bruce sounds like he took a couple of tabs followed by an "if I talk this low and slow, I'll sound very cool, babe" chaser), but this is a nice, rare document.
02/05/75 The Main Point Bryn Mawr PA CDR 2 Pristine audio. Bass is slightly up in the mix but not overbearing. The Big Man is on during this gig! Most of Disc 2 is filler with inferior audio to Disc 1.
11/04/76 The Palladium New York NY CDR 2 lots of high end but enjoyable. D2 sounds like a different show, but it just may be my ears -- the quality seems to change; however, this is an overall decent quality.
07/07/78 The Roxy Theatre Los Angeles CA CDR 3 One of my fave Boss shows. Sounds great (just a little FM signal noise), always good to hear "Badlands" early in the show, the Boss, et al, kick the audience in its teeth. What more could you ask for? Nice moment: Bruce apologizes to all of those who couldn't make it into the show and adds, "I wasn't tryin' to turn this into no private party, cuz I don't play parties anymore."
12/15/78 Winterland Ballroom San Francisco CA CDR 4 What a beaut! The Boss is in full command and the band is tight. This is FM-sourced, and despite minimal hiss during the silences, this has held-up well.
12/31/80 Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale NY CDR 3 Beautiful audio. Bruce doesn't leave anything on stage -- one of the longest, most powerful Boss performances out there.Digi-noise at start of D3. D3 quailty isn't as good as D1 or D2 -- quality changes between tracks 12 and 13 on D2; there's more white noise (for lack of a better term) in the background from that point all the way through D3. This is still a nice set, though.
??/??/80 Power Station studio New York NY CDR 2 Look, if you ask for this, you should know what you're getting: Bruce sitting around with a mic and recorder bellowing songs/song fragments until he feels it's just about right. Decent audio. And if you can't get enough of this, there's always Vol. 2.
04/??/84 The Hit Factory & The Power Station New York NY CDR 1 Some low hiss in the mix. Nice 8+ minute version of "Born...." Call me crazy, but I always like to hear "Murder Incorporated".
10/21/84 Oakland Coliseum Oakland CA CDR 3 Classic Bruce (well, classic '80s Bruce). Decent daud with good up-front sound. I dig it, and you will too, particularly hearing Bruce and the boys launch into a CCR cover second song in.
11/16/90 Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles CA CDR 2 Good, up-front audio. Slightest transition hiccups between tracks. You know, you gotta love the Boss playing a Resonator. He's a ballsy son-of-a-gun.
11/29/95 Berkeley Community Theater Berkeley CA CDR 2 Great-sounding daud. I have several other Boss shows I won't add to this list as the recordings are pure crap (and there's nothing worse than crap that's pure!). This is a great Tom Joad-Nebraska spirited set.
10/06/02 First Union Center Philadelphia PA CDR 3 Big stadium sound, of course, but not bad. Audio is surprisingly up-front, although the bass echo sometimes threatens to swallow Bruce and the boys (and girl). A couple of "clappers" are a little too close to the mics at times, but what do you expect? You try and contain yourself at a Boss show.

03/18/78 Ontario Motor Speedway Ontario CA CDR 7 When I first put this gig in the player, it sounded like a train wreck -- I was frustrated this was "rated" above a "D" (for those of you who grade); however, I was mistaken. Someone worked on this to filter-out and clean-up noise -- once the performers get on stage, the audio is surprisingly decent, a little mud, but not bad considering it wasn't FM-sourced. Most of the remaining noise and mud occur in between songs/sets. And what a collection of artists! Bob Welch (I love "Ebony Eyes" almost as much as "Sentimental Lady"), Dave Mason (does anyone even realize this guy cut a tune with Michael Jackson in the early 80s ("Save Me"?)), Santana, Heart, Ted Nugent, Foreigner, Mahogany Rush (um, who?), and (a coked-up?) Aerosmith. What's not to love?

11/07/80 Nakano Sunplaza Hall Tokyo Japan CDR 1 Make fun if you want, but I was a big fan of this cat and his one great album....I remember buying this as one of my first albums ever, and I also recall rushing out to get "Arthur's Theme" on 45 when it followed on the heels of this self-titled release. Boy, talk about using all of your best material on your first album (outside of "Arthur's Theme" and "Think of Laura")....Chris suffered the curse of winning the Best New Artist Grammy -- do you remember what happened to Jesus Jones? Milli Vanilli? Counting Crows? The list goes on and on and on. As for this show, there's one edit between tracks 1 and 2, a fade at the end of track 9, and the tiniest of signal noise low in the mix; otherwise, good audio -- and a nice Beach Boys medley for an encore.
??/??/80 Godwin Hall Harrisonburg VA CDR 1 Nearly the same setlist as the one above, but it doesn't have that awesome Beach Boys Medley and Chris bellowing, "Domo arigato" to the Japanese crowd every five seconds. Nanci and John duet on John's "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" and John takes-on "In Spite of Ourselves" without a female vocalist thus forcing him to introduce the female-led verses as "This is the girl's part" and "to which she replied." 02/22/89 Tokyo Dome Tokyo Japan CDR 2 A great-sounding D2 show. One of the great mysteries in Pop Music (or New Romantic Music as D2 has been dubbed) to me is how 1988's Big Thing album is overlooked as one of the great Duran discs. Critically-panned and snubbed by most record-buying audiences, Big Thing was a strong album, and fortunately, you get some great classics during this show, including the title track, "I Don't Want Your Love", "Do You Believe in Shame", and the experimental but catchy "All She Wants Is". Okay, there were a few throw-aways on that album, but didn't every D2 album have a couple? (Particularly 1990's Liberty where the entire album was a toss-off.) Do yourself a favor, find Big Thing and turn it up -- if you can still find it, that is....

I miss the fiery power of Andy Taylor's guitar, but this is still a fun trip to the days when Simon LeBon wore puffy shirts and knickers and danced around in the "Planet Earth" vid. Too bad he misses those high notes at the end of "Ordinary World" not once, not twice, but four times. So we can keep the fantasy going, we'll pin that mess on a back-up singer. Good audio.

Second, these guys try to pull a fast one on this show taped for broadcast (thus the tiniest bit of FM noise -- hell, it was most likely AM) -- they slip in a studio version of "Love Is the Answer" and put applause over it at the end. What? They didn't think we wouldn't notice how the track fades-out? It reminds me of the 70s and 80s when groups would perform on American Bandstand and lip-synch their tunes and awkwardly try to end a song over the fade. Classic, gut-busting stuff.

I think I'm leaning towards Firefall out of pity only because Ambrosia's "How Much I Feel" levels anything Firefall ever did. (And The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" kills the entire Ambrosia catalogue, but that's another debate.) Discuss your thoughts with your closest confidantes and get back to me. In the meantime, here's the skinny on the audio: Broadcast on WABX-FM. A little lite noise down low but overall clear audio. Sounds as if someone has done a little filtering of the audio.

05/19/94 Station Inn Nashville TN CDR 1 Amazing stuff. The quality suffers a bit with some low analog hiss present, but it's fascinating hearing these two artists finding themselves. Gillian hasn't quite settled into her lead vocal obligations and David is full of nervous energy. Seven or so originals are present in this set but have been subsequently dropped in the last 6-7 years. A couple of highlights include "Patiently Waiting" and "Two Days from Knowing" (a straight-up country song if I've ever heard one). An excellent document of "what was" and "what could have been". At times, you can pick-up some audience conversation in the mics (not usually during the songs, though), but the setlist is nice and David and Gillian really seem to be enjoying themselves.
06/26/02 The Catalyst Santa Cruz CA CDR 2 Decent audio, but there is some occasional over-modulation, particularly on Disc 2, as well as a nice, little, dull "thwup-thwup-thwup" in the background at times (again, mostly as Disc 2 progresses). Did Gilly and Dave add a bass player? I didn't think so.
06/28/02 The Fillmore San Francisco CA CDR 2 Decent daud. Crowd is a little close to the mics at times, but the show and set are enjoyable.
09/03/03 Shepherd's Bush Empire London England CDR 2 Another nice recording. More impressive yet,a little-heard version of "I Dream a Highway". And just as impressive, a nice version of Hendrix's "Manic Depression". Wow!
09/17/03 Calvin College, Fine Arts Center Grand Rapids MI CDR 2 Nice aud recording. The great thing about a Dave and Gilly show is that the crowd is very respectful; even the most inferior-sounding G&D show is okay because there is so little crowd chatter during songs. To have that kind of command over an audience....Let me tell you this too: Gilly and Dave are playing a new song as of this writing called "Throw Me a Rope" which will give you goosebumps. I won't commit to it yet, but I think it's the greatest song CSN&Y never wrote.
11/01/03 Prairie Home Companion -The Fitzgerald Theater St. Paul MN CDR 1 Good FM-pull. There is a bit of static on 'Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor' but it doesn't detract from the overall performance. When trading for this, keep in mind it is only 28 minutes in length; however, "Throw Me a Rope" makes another great appearance. This song is that incredible.

10/02/87 Paradiso Amsterdam Netherlands CDR 1 If it's not the hiss that bothers you, it will be the muddiness. Excited as you may be to get an '87 performance, skip this one. It's garbage.
10/30/87 CBGB New York NY CDR 1 This starts as a bumpy ride but as the show progresses, the audio becomes more listenable and enjoyable. While this is a sbd, whoever was running the boards left Izzy and Slash a little low in the mix at times. (I'm sure Axl kicked the sound guy's ass after the show...or scratched his eyes out and yanked his hair. He was definitely in a fighting mood anyway; at one point, he starts bantering with a fan demanding, "What'd you call me?") The filler is from an '87 London gig, and both shows feature the first and second times the G'N'R Lies material was worked-out in front of an audience.
10/31/87 The Lost Horizon Syracuse NY CDR 1 Good performance, lousy audio. Next.
12/07/88 Nakano Sunplaza Hall Tokyo Japan CDR 2 Before BoTox, braids, Bucket Head (!), and bad singing (ok, that was always kinda there). This is vintage and sweet from the original and best line-up. Up-front audio on this decent daud.
04/06/92 Myriad Convention Center Oklahoma City OK CDR 2 What a nice recording. You don't hear too many Gunners shows with this kind of audio. As for performance, Axl is, well, Ax-hole. He chooses at one point to rant-on about the absence of Izzy and the state of Oklahoma. What he's talking about, only Axl knows. Also, "Civil War" is present which always makes me break into a Walter Brennan impersonation ("What we have here, is failure to communicate"). (Now, if they'd drop that tired, strained version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" from the setlist....)
06/06/92 Hippodrome De Vincennes Paris France cdr 2
12/02/92 Estadio Nacional Santiago Chile CDR 2 I always like to report good things about a G'n'R show, but I don't have too many positive things to relay about this one. The crowd is a little too loud in the mix, there's too much high end, and the horn section on "Live and Let Die" blows in more than just one way. In other words, there are better G'N'R shows you can snag out there (and I'd stay with gigs '91 and prior).
12/05/92 Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti Buenos Aires Argentina CDR 2 Uh-oh, getting ever-closer to 1993 and the demise of this once great band. There are some noticeable skips from time-to-time on this show, so keep that in mind. Still, the audio is good and it's better than listening to "The Spaghetti Incident".
08/17/02 Chiba Marine Stadium Tokyo Japan CDR 2 Very muddy with loud singing close to the mics. At the quieter moments, the audio's a little better. Axl still has the biggest chip on his shoulder, even in '02. He should team-up with David Lee Roth and offer an "Asses 'R Us" Summer Tour. I mean, what the hell else does he have goin' on anyway?
08/18/02 WTC Open Air Stadium Osaka Japan CDR 2 Audio is okay, but it has a fade-up/fade-back type sound throughout the show (almost as if the audio were riding a wave, if that makes sense). There's a bit much high end and T2D2 has a few skips. Audio is clearer than teh previous night's show, but something's just a little off (besides Axl's key)-- I can't put my finger on it.

04/26/70 Fillmore West San Francisco CA CDR 2 You know what you're getting when it comes to Cocker, but since this recording sounds rather decent for its age, you should grab this to hear one of rock's most underrated yet passionate performers. Sure, he never really wrote anything and lived off of other songwriter's tunes, but once Joe wrapped his gin-soaked chords around a song, it was forever his. And since this show is from '70, you don't have to deal with any of his 80s fluff.(Speaking of which, we really didn't need to see Joe in videos doing anything other than performing from a stage. Why, oh why, was he often cast as a love-torn Romeo or a broken-hearted fool? Don't act, Joe, just sing and swirl you body back and forth like your big toe is on a exposed wire in a rain storm.)

09/27/79 Soundstage Chicago IL CDR 1 This is recorded from tv and sounds like it through the first minute -- it's a rough ride, baby; however, after that first nerve-rattler, the audio clears up (a little, low, lite noise in the back but underneath enough to not be distracting) and the show becomes very enjoyable. If you're a Prine fan and know anything about his early 80s material, then you know he straddled a fence between wanting to stick to his roots and wanting to rock-out. During this show, he tries to bridge the gap by having an awesome fiddler trade licks with a lead guitarist who foreshadows the great 80s "hair bands." (I swear the guy must have been Carlos Cavazo...or a very young Nuno Bettencourt.) For this reason alone, this show is worth having; however, it doesn't stop there. During this tv show, Prine rides around his old home town (Maywood, Illinois) and points out his boyhood home and some areas of inspiration for his songs. Brilliant insight, brilliant show, brilliant setlist!
03/02/82 Rockefeller's Houston TX CDR 1 Good audio. T1 D1 cuts-in, but this is the only major flaw. Steve Goodman pops up for a tune or two.

02/06/84 Rockefeller's Houston TX CDR 2 A gem! John's in a playful, talkative mood. Great audio with an equally great John comeback to audience members calling out for songs: "Don't worry; I remember the names of the songs."
10/31/84 Westbury Music Fair Westbury NY CDR 1 Good audio, enjoyable solo show. John's career waned in the 80's, but this show proves he had lost nothing. Stupid, fickle record consumers.

??/??/88 Austin City Limits Austin TX CDR 1 Short set with a little signal noise in the background; however, John and the music are up-front and John is particularly witty on this evening. My fave lime: "If you don't know the words, just make them up; that's what I had to do."
??/??/89 Point Depot Arena Dublin Ireland CDR 1 Seems to be that John hosts this show in Ireland and plays a few of his tunes, intros his (then) wife Rachel to help him out on "Unwed Fathers", intros Lyle Lovett who plays a few of his own numbers, and comes back out to play "Saddle in the Rain" followed by a duet with Lyle on "That's the Way the World Goes 'Round" (a song missing from my show!). Audio quality has evident noise/hiss, but if you love John, you gotta have it, right?
02/26/92 The Gluepot Auckland New Zealand CDR 2 Okay daud -- sound is a bit like AM -- no bass. The year is a deductive guess; it was traded to me as 02.26.83 but the appearance of songs from The Missing Years (and John's reference to the "new" album)places the show between '91 and '93. Since the album didn't come out until Sept. 1991 and John was in the studio in February '93 recording A John Prine Christmas AND John was touring overseas during early 1992, I am strongly suggesting the show is from '92. I know, I know....Hey, I'm a hardcore Prine fan. **Addendum: Boom, baby. The John Prine Shrine (www.jpshrine.org) confirms the '92 year. After all that typing, I can only write, "Whew!"

05/31/02 Wolf Trap Vienna VA CDR 2 Decent audio for an '02 Prine. Still a daud-from-a-distance, but the distance isn't too far back. John is in a good mood and relates a lot of stories through the course of the performance. Hearing this show reminds me of how I was supposed to go to it but, noooooo, friggin' work decided to interfere and force me to change my nice, neat, little plans to spend a fine night surrounded by good friends chilling to great music....Not that you care, you just want to know that the audio is listenable and enjoyable so you can better decide to trade for this or not...well, you should care because I would have been in a much netter mood typing this crap had I seen this f'in' show in person! AHHHHHHH!!!!
08/02/02 Usher Hall Edinburgh Scotland CDR 2 When the crowd is quiet, a surprisingly decent daud. A little echo, but otherwise very up-front audio. Slightest transition hiccups between tracks. John's wife, Fiona, joins him for "'Til a Tear Becomes a Rose." Gail Davies also joins him on several tracks. The highlight for me? A performance of "Storm Windows", one of my all-time fave of John's.
11/18/03 Moncton Coliseum Moncton NB CDR 2 A great surprise! I haven't heard too many '03 Prine's with decent audio, but this has great up-front sound and a wistful John singing his heart out. The setlist has become standard over the last few years, but John does pull out a few new tunes (can't wait for a new album) and continues to do a nice ripped-up version of the Carter Family's "Bear Creek Blues". Outside of that, any show with "Lake Marie" is worth having. Jump on this, Prine fans.

09/12/99 Cultural Center Theater Charleston WV CDR 1 Good sbd material. A great trader from New Zealand told me there is a running joke about Kasey over in those parts: you could trade just one of her shows and change the date and venue info and no one would know....So true. Now I can't listen to her shows without noting the similarities in setlists and onstage banter. Still, gotta love her. She may not offer a lot of variety, but she certainly has hooks and a great voice.
05/22/00 Torsgatan 1 Stockholm Sweden CDR 1 Strong performance. Some copies out there have digital issues, but not this one. Audio is nice.
10/31/00 KCRW-Morning becomes Electic Santa Monica CA CDR 1 A mixture of songs and interviews with audio pulled from an FM source. Good audio, lots of good tunes. Kasey's quickly becoming one of my faves.
11/02/00 Kuumbwa Santa Cruz CA CDR 1 This chick is great with a nice sense of humo(u)r ("u" added for her Australian background). Nice audio and an honest if not great attempt at Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves". She should be bigger than she is.
03/05/01 The Ark Ann Arbor MI CDR 2 Nice daud. Kasey hits it out of the park once again.
03/20/01 The Roxy Hollywood CA CDR 2 A nice daud with a very familiar setlist....
03/22/01 Kuumbwa Jazz Center Santa Cruz CA CDR 2 Not a bad daud -- not the clearest, but still perty dang good.
03/29/01 400 Bar Minneapolis MN CDR 1 Nice daud, a little heavy on bass at times, but nothing to worry about. Good stuff with another version of Prine's never released "If I Could" (okay, it was on an Oh Boy sampler, but outside of that....)
06/07/01 WFUV New York NY CDR 1 A mix of album cuts, in-studio performances and interview. Crystal clear and short. Perhaps 35-45 miunutes in length.
06/09/01 Calvin Theatre Northampton MA CDR 1 Another decent daud with a bit of echo present. I'm sorry to sound as repetitive as a Kasey setlist, but here we go again....
06/10/01 FleetBoston Pavilion Boston MA CDR 1 Recorded as one track (errrrrr), but I'll fix it soon.
06/16/01 Clutch Cargo's Pontiac MI CDR 1 A little distant-sounding, but good just the same.
06/25/01 Southern Theater Columbus OH CDR 1 Very distant audio -- not the best daud. Unless you're a huge, slobbering fan, skip it. There's much better on my list.
06/26/01 Starr Hill Bar Charlottesville VA CDR 1 Hmmmm....I have this as 02.26.01. I'll do a little more research. There's a bit of a squelch prior to the audio and it tends to be a tad muffled throughout, but not bad. I'm just bitter that I missed this show when it was in my own backyard.
10/11/01 The Metro Sydney Australia CDR 2 Another nice show from Kasey. Truly, if you haven't listened to her, you should. Excellent daud.
??/??/01 Odds and Ends Vol. 1 Compilation Compilation CDR 1 Great audio (despite a pop in between tracks) on this compilation of b-sides and studio leftovers. Wait until you hear Kasey do Crowded House's "Better Be Home Soon"; You'll be butter, baby.
01/01/02 "On the Road" Compilation Vol. 1 CDR 1 MOre of the same as the other compilations with a few songs once again repeated. These are not all live renditions despite the title. Tracks 1-8 are Kasey, Tracks 9-14 are...someone else, possibly Neil Finn, though perhaps not until the last few cuts. Whoever it is, he (and in this case, she) does a great version of Roseanne Cash's "Seven Year Ache". I'd forgotten how great that song is!
03/29/02 Red Devil Park Byron Bay NSW, Australia CDR 1 Good FM-sourced show with Kasey going ga-ga when Steve Earle joins her for a duet on "Sometimes She Forgets".
??/??/02 Rarities Compilation Vol. 1 CDR 1 Another collection of rareties and leave-ins. There are several cuts repeated between this collection and the "Odds and Ends" listed above. I'll update the Master Database one day to include the setlists. Again, great audio (without the pops at the transition marks).
02/26/03 The Keswick Theatre Glenside PA CDR 1 Decent daud. A little muffled but not bad; You can still count on Track 3 being Prine's "If I Could." Do you think she ever gets bored?

03/11/83 Shinjuku Koseinenkin Hall Tokyo Japan CDR 2 Oh, damn, we were so close. This is a great sbd (ok, maybe FM, but you can't tell -- it's that good) with great friggin' songs! The problem: a ton of hiss really noticeable during the tender moments ("Celebrate Me Home") and the silences; however, while I admittedly loathe hiss, I think you'll be like me and forget it's there as you get caught-up in the groovy rhythms of Mr. Loggins and recklessly run around your living room waving your arms in the air like a madman as you rock-out to "This Is It", "Heartlight", and "I'm Alright". If "Danger Zone" had been on here, they would have locked me away. I swear.

11/18/73 The Record Plant Sausalito CA CDR 1 T1 cuts in and there's a vinyl pop every now and again, but overall, it's good audio. Linda makes a nice attempt at Patsy's "I Fall to Pieces."
11/??/76 Apollo Theatre London England CDR 1 T1 cuts in, a little lite noise down low in the recording; otherwise, good audio for the most part. Linda offers a nice take on Willie's "Crazy", but then, who didn't she take from?
12/01/77 Fox Theater Atlanta GA CDR 1 A little low hum in the mix, but good quality overall. Linda relates a nice story about a one week affair she had with Lowell George as a lead-in to a rather dull "Willin'". Truly, if you read enough rock bios from the 70s, you have to wonder who Linda didn't sleep with....If I had been a tad older, maybe, just maybe....

Lindsey Buckingham
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
12/11/92 Coach House San Juan Capistrano Ca CDR 1 Good sbd (or FM). Lindsey starts off great with "Big Love" but then suddenly turns the show into performance art with poetry recitations before massacring "Go Insane", my favorite solo tune. After that, it becomes almost painful to hear the tepid applause during his post-Mac songs and the enthusiastic cheering for the familiar stuff, i.e. the Fleetwood Mac hits. (Although I loved hearing "Trouble", a guilty pleasure (and a pure piece of crap)).
??/??/01 Gift of Screws Various Various CDR 1 It boggles the mind how someone so talented could release so many poor solo albums. Good audio, but that only makes up for so much. Good thing the Mac is getting back together...again....

12/21/00 CBGB's New York NY CDR 2 Decent small club audio, but the vox are way low in the recording. Vernon still sounds great, but this poor band suffered from what I call "The Platoon Curse": most actors in Oliver Stone's Platoon went on to...career purgatory. Witness Charlie Sheen, Aidan Quinn, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, and Mr. Corey Clover. Thanks a lot, pal.

Loggins & Messina
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
06/30/72 Soldiers & Sailor's Memorial Hall Kansas City KS CDR 1 There're one or two very brief drop-outs during the audio, but this is an otherwise nice-sounding, classic performance. This show definitely foreshadows Kenny's split from Jim as the first five tracks feature Loggins alone onstage...singing songs they performed as a duo. Ouch. Shades of Paul Simon.
08/21/76 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale NY CDR 1 The crowd is just nuts for these two -- unbelievable. A little lite noise, but not terribly intrusive. Highlight: Kenny and Jim do a heartfelt rendition of "Whiskey" in homage to the Whisky A-Go-Go". Like America, hard to believe these cats played on the same stage where Jim Morrison used to prowl. Some strange rift in the universe must have allowed that to occur. Edits between tracks 8 and 9, 10 and 11.

01/29/72 Bataclan Club Paris France CDR 1 First, if you checked out comments from some other owners of this show, then you know there is supposedly an mp3 source out there somewhere; however, I cannot detect any of that tinny-warbly audio associated with mp3s on the version I have. I cannot absolutley say this is not from an mp3, but I'm telling you I do not believe it is. If you have any hesitation, I suggest you skip by this show altogether. If you do want it, I have to also tell you there is the slightest bit of hiss present during the silences, but it is far back in the mix on this sbd. There is also a tiny edit between tracks 5 and 6 and 8 and 9. As for the performance, Lou sounds bluer than ever, Nico is unfortunately at the show, and John's opportunity to take lead vocals only proves that despite his monotone, Lou was the best vocalist in the Underground (sad, huh?). And I love VU and all (and am a huge Lou fan), but damn that viola!
12/26/72 Ultrasonic Studios Hempstead NY CDR 1 Nice audio for its age (with a little static detected between tracks) with lots of good VU material among songs from Lou Reed and Transformer. NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR TRADE. This is now commercially-available.
01/27/73 Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center New York NY CDR 1 Okay daud. Vocals at times a little buried. Lots of good VU material including a nice bluesy version of "Waiting for My Man".

??/??/72 Troubador Los Angeles CA CDR 2 For its age, very nice audio. Loudon has his own, heady way, man. I think you'll dig it, brother.
06/19/74 Aspen Folk Festival Aspen CO CDR 1 Shows a little age but has held up well. This guy is so quirky, he makes Jesse Camp look normal -- okay, that may be a stretch, but give me two points for fitting "Jesse Camp" into my notes.
04/09/78 My Father's Place Old Roslyn NY CDR 2 Stellar show. Slow Train opens the show (they're some kind of Skynyrd-Allmans-Feat-.38 Special hybrid -- we'll just call them "Shit") and give way to Loudon who strums and works the crowd like a friggin' master. The audience is way-into the show and very appreciative when he plays "Rufus Is a Tit Man". (Can you blame him? Rufus, I mean.) Slow Train, er, I mean "Shit", backs Loudon for the last portion of the show; fun to hear Loudon being a rock'n'roller. It actually sounds pretty good, proving "Shit" needs to take Loudon out on the road much more than Loudon needs to take "Shit." (Is that only funny to me?)
04/23/83 Paris Theater London UK CDR 1 Good audio. This is not the same show as the recently-released studio album of BBC appearances. Trade away.
11/??/84 ExPatriot Live Hamburg Germany CDR 1 This is actually 11.11.84. Decent audio. The guy has always been quirky, so if you dig that sort of thing, this is for you. I personally love the guy, another one of those fine singer-songwriters.
03/21/86 Half Moon - South Putney London England CDR 1 Another fine sbd Loudon show. The man is loose, unpredictable, and in his usual humorous, crowd-pleasing mood. Just what you hope for!
10/26/88 First Avenue Minneapolis MN CDR 1 Good audio, fun set.
02/09/95 Godfrey Daniels Bethlehem PA CDR 1 Another great-sounding Loudon show, both in audio quality and performance -- although the gig is marred with technical difficulties, from broken guitar strings to an out-of-tune instrument; however, Loudon weathers the storm in typical Loudon fashion and turns the troubles into loose, comic gold. What a showman!
11/23/99 Moments Bremen Germany CDR 2 Ah, just a beautiful recording. If you like John Denver, well, this guy is nothing like him; however, their voices have similarities...so, I guess he is somewhat like him...you know, because of the voice-thing.
05/15/02 20th Century Theatre Cincinnati OH CDR 2 A decent daud. One of my new favorite Loudon songs is "There'll Be Lots of Drinking in Heaven". Sample lyrics: "The angels have ashtrays in heaven, St. Peter puffs on a cigar, that's right, smoking's allowed, it's what makes all those clouds, and you don't have to sit at the bar." Brilliant. (I know, I know; it's hard to get a sense of the rhythm without the tune, but treat it like a limerick and you'll be close.)

01/27/92 Guthrie Theater Minneapolis MN CDR 2 Great audio, great delivery. Lyle is one of those Texas singer-songwriters who continues to amaze me; while his heyday dissipated with his marriage to Julia (I think he was the "beauty" in that Disney fairy tale), I think it only made him a better, more realized performer. Of course, I was an English major, so counseling and the effects thereof don't mean too much to me. (I is a perty good speaker, tho'....)
??/??/00 Sessions at W. 54th New York NY CDR 1 The year is probably inaccurate, but this is a sweet-sounding show. Lyle covers his favorite Texas singer-songwriters (including himself). 03/22/81 The Ritz New York NY CDR 1 Remember when you realized the "1" on the "1999" album cover was a penis? You knew right then that Prince was no Lou Rawls. Drop-out in T1. A little lite noise way low, but an overall good quality audio.
05/??/81 Unknown New Orleans LA CDR 1 Okay audio, but the other early-80s material sounds better.
06/03/81 Le Palace Paris France CDR 1 A little noise in the mix but decent all the same. What a classic, early setlist. The dirty, little boy in me loves it.
12/12/81 Columbia University New York NY CDR 1 Brilliant, brilliant performer. I'll probably add this line to most of my show descriptions for Prince, but at that time, we really had not seen anything like this Marvin Gaye/Sylvester/Sly Stone-hybrid. Thrown in a dash of Ohio Players funk and heaping amounts of sex, and you have said brilliance. (Good audio too, by the way.)
11/30/82 Masonic Temple Auditorium Detroit MI CDR 1 What makes this early Prince so worthwhile is you get to hear cuts like "Lady Cab Driver" and "Head", things you would never-ever catch at a post-Prince, post-TAFKAP, present-Prince show. A damn shame the party was over by 1999 (although I thought "Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic" was a worthy comeback (excluding the fact TAFKAP resorted to a cover tune (by Sheryl Crow of all people (!)))). Good audio.
04/07/85 Orange Bowl Miami FL cdr 2
06/07/86 Cobo Hall Detroit MI CDR 1 Not the best daud, low levels but somewhat listenable. With this gig, you get a wealth of Around the World in a Day cuts which is gold to me. Prince could have made a carbon copy of Purple Rain and thrown that back at us as a follow-up, but instead he decided to channel The Beatles and give us this seldomly-mentioned gem. Call it Around Abbey Road in a Day. (Then there's the follow-up to this, Parade, which admittedly doesn't move me as much -- although I always perform Kiss when I karaoke...although, I mean, I don't do karaoke or anything; that would be silly.)
09/09/86 Yokohama Stadium Yokohama Japan CDR 2 A so-so daud.
02/21/87 Paisley Park Minneapolis MN CDR 2 A little lite noise. This is from the Paisley Park rehearsals for the Sign 'o the Times tour. The audio is good (outside of the aforementioned lite noise) and features an interesting version of "Kiss" with horns and a thumping bass. Fun to hear the diminutive genius calling out directions to his band ala James Brown.

It's so off-key in some places that even "Amie" sounds like they accidentally switched their moonshine with goat piss. Or maybe that's the other way around. Either way, that ain't Vince Gill singin'. 11/29/90 Jaap Edenhal Amsterdam The Netherlands CDR 1 Geoff Tate and the boys in full-Floyd form. I give the dudes credit: when all of the other hair bands were aping each other, these guys decided to add make-up and amped-up axes to later Pink Floyd. Unfortunately, the band members were intelligent to a fault. But at least they had talent unlike many of their contemporaries. (As an aside, I still rememeber an article in Hit Parader where Gene Simmons called them "Queersryche". Either way, they blew Kiss of the stage with their opening sets when they toured together (even if the fans weren't as appreciative) and they never became cheap shills. Kiss Coffin, anyone? What a tool.) Quality varies on this. Some of the audio sounds great, some merely decent. There's one small edit between Tracks 7 and 8.

Whatever the case, there's the tiniest of signal noise and slight transition hiccups between tracks. 08/28/71 Philadelphia Folk Festival Philadelphia PA CDR 1 This is a surprisingly nice-sounding show. Only four cuts feature Steve performing one of his songs ("City of New Orleans"), one by Prine ("Donald & Lydia"), one by Hank Williams ("Mind Your Own Business"), and one by Billy Joe Shaver ("Hard to Be a Christian Soldier" -- which sounds suspiciously like the prototype for Goodman and Prine's "You Don't Even Call Me by My Name"). David Bromberg plays mandolin in Steve's band (which was put together at the last minute for this festival) and has a short solo break during the Williams song. Also featured on this disc and show is Bromberg for four cuts, The Calvary Gospel Group for four songs, and Happy and Arty Traum for one song, the uplifting "Cocaine Gonna Kill My Honey Dead". (I wish there were more of these guys on here -- they're great.) The sequencing is out of order on here (Bromberg closes the festival but is the first artist to appear on the disc); all-in-all, a great show to own.
??/??/75 Amazingrace Evanston IL CDR 1 Not the cleanest recording, but the music and vox come out nice and clear (a little hiss and warble between cuts). Guitarist Martin sings the last song (if you were wondering when reading the setlist info).

You should suffer too -- make up your own tune to the chorus if you don't know it: "Men who love women who love men, And women who love women every now and then, and men who love men because they can't pretend, they're men who love women who love men." Oh, jeez, I'm dying' here....
11/14/77 Great American Music Hall San Francisco CA CDR 1 From KSAN. Brilliant performance (as usual). Without question, Steve had one of the cleanest voices in folk/rock; however, his guitar playing, often overlooked, was close to great. The next time you listen to a Steve show, focus on what he does with that six-string thing. A marvel. On this great-sounding show, check out the old coot (Melvina Reynolds) who joins Steve for a song. Hearing the "F" word come out of her mouth not once but twice was a little shocking (but funny -- I think old people cussing is a riot). In addition to that old bird, Jethro Burns comes out for some excellent picking. Just a nice, sweet show.
12/31/77 Earl of Old Town Chicago IL CDR 1 Hiss present but not over-bearing. Overall a good performance, but I'm not a huge fan of Goodman with a full band.

04/28/79 The Bayou Washington DC CDR 2 I've got this show listed as being from '77, but I'm near 100% it's '79. Great audio from an FM source.
02/01/82 The Birchmere Alexandria VA CDR 2 Ah, beautiful instrumentation on this show. Steve is great, of course, and the audio is nice. There are, unfortunately, 1/15 second gaps between tracks -- just a hair, but there nonetheless.
06/09/83 Rockefellers Houston TX CDR 2 Interesting Martin Mull intro to show with "comedic criticisms" of Goodman by Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Buffett, Jackson Browne, Carl Reiner, and Steve Martin, the great comedian who used to tour with Goodman. The intro quality isn't great, but the rest of the show is good with the slightest noise down low. Another fine performance.
01/28/84 The Michigan Theatre Ann Arbor MI CDR 1 A damn-near perfect performance! I can't praise enough the courage Steve shows in this show. Even though he had been struggling with Leukemia for some time, he put on a brave face and gave every bit of energy for the sake of the crowd. During "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request", he intros the song by saying it was about someone dying, and then adds, "Although no one's dying here." We should all be so well-grounded and optimistic. One of the best, strongest Goodman shows I have ever heard.

Todd Snider
Date Venue City State Media Type Media Count SHN Info Notes
??/??/92 The Highland Cue Memphis TN CDR 1 Rough sound but the earliest Snider show I know of out there. If you're a fan, you'll want to get this to hear Todd and the Nervous Wrecks do a sdong called "Heavy Metal Has Been" -- very funny stuff. I wish the quality were better, but it's worth listening through at least once.
12/31/94 New Daisy Theater Memphis TN CDR 2 I always get excited about NYE gigs, but the audio on this one is rough and muffled -- it sounds like it was recorded from behind a closed door. Tr1, D1 cuts-in; Tr1, D2 cuts-in. It's a shame; it sounds like a fun show.
04/05/95 Caravan Of Dreams Fort Worth TX CDR 1 Decent sbd. Just a little lite fuzz in the background. You know what? Crud; this is incomplete. First disc ends at "Takin' It As It Comes". I would love the second disc....Please. Please?!?! "I'm beggin' you, Jerry!"
05/24/95 The Fillmore Cortemaggiore Italy CDR 2 Good stuff with The Nervous Wrecks. Nice audio.
06/09/96 The Paradise Club Boston MA CDR 2 Okay aduio on this daud. Some unfortunate edits between some tracks -- Todd's conversation sometimes gets clipped.
10/02/96 Gunnerz Iowa City IA CDR 2 Good show.
10/09/97 Smith's Olde Bar Atlanta GA CDR 2 Decent audio, vox a little low at times but not bad. Nice playing from the Nervous Wrecks. "Alright Guy" is taken at a slightly slower pace than normal.
11/14/97 Shank Hall Milwaukee WI CDR 1 Decent full-band recording but a little fuzzy. Todd's much better touring solo.
??/??/97 Compilation - Barefootin' Compilation Compilation CDR 2 Compilation of several performances with varying qualities. Not the greatest stuff. For fans only.
04/11/98 New Daisy Theater Memphis TN CDR 2 Merely okay sound. A little bassy and muddy. This was a CD release party.
04/19/98 Gunnerz Iowa City IA CDR 2 Damn! This was so close to being a perfect recording; however, when The Bottle Rockets join Todd for the encore, you can hear some "popping" (non-digital) as if a guitar cord weren't plugged-in all the way. As the set progresses, the distortion gets more prominent and the vox over-modulate to add insult to amputation. The last track does have some digi-noise recorded on the original DAT. What do I recommend then? I think it's worth it -- check out the setlist! Will Kimbrough on vox for "Godsend" and a drunken, all-Lynyrd Skynyrd encore. The audio problems aren't until the encore, so do as the bands do during that set, drink-up and you'll never notice.
04/22/98 The Fine Line Minneapolis MN CDR 2 Nice daud. A little lite on bass but good, clean audio. Todd keeps the Nervous Wrecks backstage for a short time to do a solo set -- the "folk segment of the show" when he "stops imitating Tom Petty long enough to kick-off some Bob Dylan crap." The last set of the show features "Gimme Three Steps", "Needle and Spoon", "Simple Man", "Sweet Home Alabama" and "They Call Me the Breeze". Top top that off, the encore offers "Willin'". What a damn-fine show.
07/04/98 The Taste Of Chicago - Grant Park Chicago IL CDR 1 Big crowd, good audio.
07/17/98 Smith's Olde Bar Atlanta GA CDR 2 An okay daud; listenable, but not my best or my favorite.
??/??/98 Viva Satellite Demos Unknown Unknown CDR 1 A little light on the high-end but otherwise a decent studio demo.
02/15/99 Radio Cafe Nashville TN CDR 2 Okay daud, some digi-pops and TAO. Rats! Disc 2 is not TAO, has some hiss not present on the first disc, fades in between tracks, and has some noticeable edits. And this was rated an "A-"? What a disaster!
05/29/99 Mountain Aire - Angel's Camp Calveras County CA CDR 1 Nice, clear daud. Todd actually sounds coherent.
05/30/99 Mountain Aire, Angel's Camp Calveras County CA CDR 1 Clearer daud than the day before (and that one was decent), but it is windy at times. Between songs, you can hear the band playing on the next stage. It doesn't distract too much, though.
09/03/99 Mucky Duck Houston TX CDR 2 Not the greatest audio. Music's up-front, but either Todd's vocal mix is too hot or the recorder is as evidenced by the occasional over-modulation. One rough edit. Ask for this if you want to get everything Todd has out there -- nerd. (Snort! Snort!) Oh, wait, that means....What I mean is, trade for it if you want to be cool. (Now, "Live Long and Prosper."
10/15/99 Maxwell's Hoboken NJ CDR 1 Just another brilliant sbd from Todd. Includes one of my faves, "I Spoke As a Child". Small crowds, such as this, always make the best Todd shows.
??/??/99 Countryfried Unknown TN CDR 1 Very lite, unobtrusive hiss, barely noticeable; otherwise, studio quality. Oddly enough, Todd sounds like Dylan on the first cut.
05/11/00 LynaghÂ’s Music Club Lexington KY CDR 2 Okay daud. Transitions are noticeable in a couple of places. Finally, another appearance of the Garth Brooks story. Crowd is a little loud but very much into the show.
06/10/00 Old Town School of Folk Music Chicago IL CDR 2 Nice daud. The "Garth Brooks" story raises its fall-down-funny head once again. Told with a better delivery on the 11.17.00 gig, my benchmark of all Snider performances.
07/15/00 Cats In-Store / New Daisy Theatre Memphis TN CDR 1 Nice-sounding daud for the first four trax and then it sounds like it changes to a different show for trax 5-13. I have no idea what the hell happened, but I'm checking into it. It could be a hybrid of two different recordings of the same show. There are also fades at the end of some of the songs along with some chops and pops in the audio. In fact, the further you listen, the bigger a piece of crap this becomes. For fans only...maybe....
09/10/00 Iota Theatre Arlington VA CDR 2 Decent daud. Some hiccups and clicks between a few tracks.
09/12/00 The Knitting Factory New York NY CDR 2 You're in for a treat on this one. This is another decent daud with the slightest transition clicks between tracks; however, this doesn't distract from this sparsely-attended show where Todd finally says to hell with it and sits down among the crowd to play after buying the house a round. Such an intimate, informal, "by request" gig. Check-out the setlist to get an idea of the kind of show it was.
09/30/00 Lynagh's Pub Lexington KY CDR 2 A decent daud with up-front audio. Crowd sounds rowdy and drunk and is really into the show (although there is one guy that rather annoyingly calls out for "Doublewide Blues" the whole show). Former bandmate Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack join for parts of this show.
11/12/00 Iota Arlington VA CDR 1 Decent daud. You may have to turn up the volume from time-to-time when Todd tells stories, but it's good all the same.
11/15/00 Freight & Salvage Berkeley CA CDR 2 Another nice sbd. Todd sounds a little subdued on this one. Ah, the grind of the road, man, the grind of the road....
11/17/00 Auburn Event Center Auburn CA CDR 2 The benchmark of all Snider shows. Excellent sbd with great stories (Garth Brooks vs. Chris Gaines) and music. If you like Prine, get this guy.
??/??/00 Rarities Compilation Vol. 1 CDR 1 The date, of course, is inaccurate. Quality varies but the first eight or so songs feature Todd alone with decent sbd sound. There is a strange "computer" warbling noticeable between tracks (and way underneath the music), but I'm very certain it's not Mp3. "She's So Politically Correct" is worth the price of admission on this one.
01/13/01 Crighton Theater Conroe TX CDR 2 Excellent sbd.
02/24/01 The Neighborhood Theatre Charlotte NC CDR 2 Decent daud. Vocals sound a bit far away, but not a big problem.
03/02/01 The Fine Line Minneapolis MN CDR 2 This is actually the 03.02.01 show. Good sound for a daud. Good performance worth having. Track 1, Disc 1 cuts in.
03/04/01 Byron's Pomeroy IA CDR 2 Great sbd. I can't stress the showmanship of this guy. He reminds me of a good friend who has brought his guitar to your house, had a few rounds, and plays and talks all night.
06/01/01 Masonic Lodge Oakville ON CDR 2 A good sbd Todd. He's in very good spirits and interacts with the crowd nicely. There are some minor edits/chops between a couple of songs, but this didn't distract me too much from my enjoyment of the show.
06/17/01 KPIG Texas Uprising & Swine Soiree Santa Cruz CA CDR 1 Great audio. Todd plays "B-EE-RR-U-N" twice because he thought the first version blew. He was pretty much right.
08/19/01 Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Lyons CO CDR 1 Very clear daud with the vocals a tad lower in the mix than the guitar. A windy day as evidenced by the gusts that catch the mic from time-to-time.
09/23/01 The Blue Door Oklahoma City OK CDR 1 If this isn't a sbd, it's damn close. The stories are a little lite, but this is still a great set with a loving crowd.
09/29/01 Soiled Dove Denver CO CDR 2 A few rough cuts between tracks but an enjoyable show. Nice covers of "Mr. Bojangles" and "Illegal Smile". Todd is definitely in a storytelling mood on this day.
10/18/01 The Handlebar Greenville SC CDR 1 Todd doing Neil? Sweet....
10/25/01 The Patio Indianapolis IN CDR 1 Audio is good on this daud. The crowd is a little raucous and very much into singing the songs with Todd, especially "My Generation, Part 2". There are a couple of noticeable edits and slight transition hiccups between tracks.
11/09/01 Orpheum Theater Phoenix AZ CDR 1 Decent daud. Todd opened for Prine on this show. The last track has a transition hiccup where someone put John's encore on the end of Todd's set because John has Todd come out and sing "Paradise" with him. (Also known as the song John often calls "Daddy, Won't You Take Me back to Muehlenberg County?")
12/01/01 Common Fence Point Hall Portsmouth RI CDR 2 Another fine Todd performance. This show was two days after George Harrison passed away. While this daud sounds clear and decent, due to noise/hum in the right channel of master DAT, this is a mono recording (left channel of master only).
12/07/01 The Tin Angel - Early Show Philadelphia PA CDR 1 Great sbd show with new songs and guests Will Kimbrough on guitar/harmonies and Chris Grady on stand-up bass.
12/07/01 The Tin Angel - Late Show Philadelphia PA CDR 1 Pick this and the Early show up -- good stuff. Not as many stories, but Todd picks up his energy with Will and Chris on stage. Sweet sbd.
??/??/01 The Colorado Demos Colorado Demos CDR 1 Clear demo with just Todd but there is some hiss present. Tasty tunes, though.
04/21/02 Mystic Theater Petaluma CA CDR 1 Sweet sbd. Grab this one. Todd plays a rare "Betty Was Black".
06/14/02 Canal Street Tavern Dayton OH CDR 2 Yes, sir! A good sbd '02 Snider -- and what a setlist! I cannot say anything bad about this show. Todd is on and as interactive as always.
06/21/02 Telluride Bluegrass Festival - Town Park Telluride CO CDR 1 More good '02 Todd. He has a good time with the crowd.
09/28/02 Bart's CD and Record Store Boulder CO CDR 1 Todd at an in-store performance and promotion. Only 5-6 songs, but you get to hear some tunes you don't get to usually hear at shows, particularly "Tension" which I just love. The filler is Kim Richey and Will Kimbrough in Boulder, Colorado. Nice audio on both performances.
10/01/02 Madrid Theatre Kansas City MO CDR 2 This nice, rarely-circulated sbd features Todd in a seemingly chemically-enhanced mood (although during most of his shows, he seems to have some help from extracurricular stimuli). The first few songs begin lackadaisically as is common with many Todd performances, but as the gig progresses, he picks up the speed (no pun intended). Highlights include several great stories (including a re-worked version of the "Moondawg's Tavern" tale), a rollicking albeit short rendition of "Kansas City", and the rarely-played, never-recorded "Plastic Girl" about a very inflatable female (as the song goes, when you let the air out, "she goes down"). The opener is Dave Zollo, nothing special, but decent all the same.
07/11/03 The Kaffeklatch Huntsville AL DVD 1 I authored this version (as submitted to etree by someone else) from an unknown-generation VHS. I haven't associated the audio separate from the video (sounds strange, I know, but if I simply listened to the audio without watching Todd's drug-addled eyes and solid performance, I may have a different perspective on the audio quality), but it's listenable. I do not have the audio extracted but I can trade the DVD.
08/17/03 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Lyons CO CDR 1 Great show with good audio. This is one of Todd's first shows back after the loss of his long-time manager Guitar Skip. He sounds better here than when I would see him less than a week later -- the effect of Skip's death was really hitting him that night -- still a great show in a very melancholy way.

11/08/92 Lounge Axe Chicago IL CDR 1 very nice daud. A tad bass-heavy.
11/11/93 Slim's San Francisco CA CDR 1 Great show, great sound.

12/28/78 Pasadena Civic Center Pasadena CA CDR 1 Nice sound, a little bassy, though. Little hiss noticeable between tracks. This is a DAO copy.
05/01/80 Capital Center Largo MD CDR 1 Not the greatest audio -- listenable sbd, but suffers from age. Here's a little lesson for today: David Lee interrupts the start of "Take Your Whiskey Home" to remind the crowd of how cool and stoned he is; he then proceeds to stop Eddie's intro two more times to continue the "Dave Show". Once he finally starts to sing, he begins at the wrong time; thus, the lesson: David Lee Roth = Big Prick. The exam: a very long essay.
05/29/83 Glen Helen Regional Park Devore CA CDR 2 The Master Database says the audio on this show is the best of the Dave-era. Well, I must have gotten a 48th-generation copy. It's an okay daud, but it definitely has that big-stadium sound. The setlist is nice, but I'd be happy to upgrade...soon....

02/15/73 Lion's Share San Anselmo CA CDR 1 Shows its age. Sounds a bit like AM radio. A few clicks on some tracks.
05/26/73 Troubadour Club Los Angeles CA CDR 1 Nice sound. Mastered from an LP as evidenced by the occasional pop. A couple digital hiccups for several seconds over two tracks.
07/29/74 The Orphanage San Francisco CA CDR 1 Shows some age with a bit of a "staticy" background noise. Not terribly intrusive. Let me tell you a story of integrity and generosity: I traded for this show with a guy named Bill. About two months after the trade, he was perusing my list and saw a note that was here refering to the fact that the recording he sent had :02 gaps. He emailed me and said he was sending a replacement. I told him it was not necessary, but a week later, I had a new disc. Traders like Bill should be applauded -- he is what makes this trading-thing so great.

08/02/69 The Hilltop Rock Festival Rindge NH CDR 1 Sounds like AM radio with a bit of static and buzz. In typical VU fashion, the show consists of only six songs with the last a 32 minute repetition of music (?) and Lou singing "She's sittin' there suckin' on my ding-dong". (And I thought I knew every song in the VU canon.) "Ding-dong", Lou?
10/19/69 The End Of Cole Avenue Dallas TX CDR 2 Surprisingly decent audio for a VU show. Vocals are a smidgen buried, but since it's Lou Reed, you never know if the sound guy had instructions to lower them. A couple of fade-outs/ins between tracks.

09/01/94 Demerest Dorm, Rutgers, U. New Brunswick NJ CDR 1 Venue says it all: a gig in a dorm. Decent audio for daud, fun show. My ever-favorite Ween line: "This is 'Pandy Fackler'...by Ween." Those guys kill me!
01/02/99 9:30 Club Washington DC CDR 3 Nice daud, very up-front audio. Couple of pops here and there, but nothing distracting. Drop-out at 3:50-3:51 T3 D2 and 5:42-5:43 T2 D3. Gene seems particularly surly this show -- which means it's a great performance. The encore is great with the best kiss-off song of all time: "You F**ked Up". What a ton of fun.
07/23/99 Higher Ground Winooski VT CDR 3 Decent daud. Vocals sometimes lost in the mix but not often. Gene and Dean are as rude as ever -- just what you want.
06/16/00 City Market Kansas City MO CDR 3 Decent daud. Lots of bass but up-front vocals and music.
06/30/00 ES: Venice Beach LS: The Glass House Venice/Pomona CA CDR 4 2 cdrs for Early Show, 2 cdrs for Late Show. Okay daud, stadium-quality sound to the audio, i.e. distant, echoey audio. Enjoyable show, though. Tiny hiccups between tracks.

??/??/39 Ultimate Rarities n/a n/a CDR 1 Great stuff and audio. One or two "whiffs" during track changes but nothing to get fussed about. You know what you're getting here: bombastic choruses, third-rate lyrics, and great solos. (In fact, with Yngwie, everything else just gets in the way of the solo.) One surprise: Track 4, "I Wait for You"; Yngwie breaks-out an acoustic on this song sounding very much like a leftover Styx cut...with a bombastic chorus, third-rate lyrics, and a great solo.
