This show is an accoustic(mainly)performance played with Chuck Prophet, who takes the mic for New Years Day. Sound quality is great. Recommended if looking for a nice mellow show to listen to. |

What was billed a short set of maybe 3 to 4 new songs turned into a memorable, relaxed evening full of old and new material before an intimate crowd of about 200 people. For some reason, fire trucks were called in just before showtime, apparently a false alarm--but making the wait outside on one of the coldest nights of the winter much more excruciating. I didn't have a ticket (it sold out in a day), and at one point I was waiting outside alone in the cold, with everyone saying sorry, sorry, sorry. I persevered, befriended a volunteer, and got in.
Once inside, tempers subsided and the evening's good cause helped give the room a nice vibe (Housing Works, the show's sponsor, fights AIDS and homelessness; tonight's show was a benefit).
Highlights included an acoustic rendition of Lovesick Blues (and I mean really acoustic--sound problems interrupted the set halfway though and Ryan filled the time while they were fixing it by jumping into the crowd, hopping on a chair, and hamming it up with a little old school twang, all without benefit of amp or mike.) The crowd loved it. After Jeanne, everything was done all by request, including (according to Ryan) a first time live rendition of Hallelujah by this band. Ryan said he'd pass a hat around and, for ten bucks, he'd play, or try to play, anything the donor requested. Eight songs followed.
A night I won't soon forget. |

2. From the official page: "Ryan and The Pinkhearts stumbled upon an open mike night at Tapwerks in Bricktown, OK. Mr. Adams played an impromptu set of five songs, including a couple new ones. He then played guitar with local musician Carter Sampson."
3. Ryan Message Board Post: "BUT I THINK I PLAYED TO BE YOUNG, LOUISE, MONSTERS, MY FATHERS SON, SOME OTHER STUFF. THERE WAS THIS EXCELLENT GAL WHO SANG JUST GREAT AND HAD RAD SONGS. SHE HAD A COOL NAME TOO."

The venue mix was, to put it lightly, absolutely horrible. The bass was more
than twice as loud as it should have been, and I couldn't seem to shake that
from the recording. Ryan was visibly frustrated with the sound of his guitar at
several points during the evening, as was evident after every song and during
many songs, when he would go over to the amps and play with the knobs.

Fade in on d1t01. This sounds great overall, there are a few hot spots here and there but not too shabby. This was a great show, please do not sell this. If it ends up on Ebay I will stop sharing, so please don't be a dink. Thanks to Ryan's sound guy for the board feed. |

ryan's rig was a separate board mix with a set of
room mics (don't know what kind). the room mics are so
light in the mix that i wouldn't consider it a matrix
but thought it was worth noting. |

48 Hours Sessions
Of course, as soon as "Gold" was finished, Ryan went into full freak-out mode. Inspired by a "mind-boggling" show by his friend Alanis Morissette at Los Angeles's El Rey Theater in May 2001, he immediately started writing again, called up producer Ethan Johns, and was back in the studio that same week. A full album was recorded and mixed in two days - which is why this batch of songs was titled "48 Hours." The sound he was going for was "a country-folk thing like 'John Wesley Harding' or 'Workingman's Dead,' with some shitkicking Merle Haggard stuff in there" - the glorious "Hallelujah" and the irresistible, twangy "Chin Up, Cheer Up" certainly make for a dramatic contrast with the "Suicide" songs Ryan's touring musicians took on an alternate life as a garage band called the Pinkhearts - he even flummoxed the crowd at Austin's 2001 South By Southwest festival by turning his much-touted showcase into a raucous Pinkhearts set. Back in Nashville, with CDs by Sonic Youth, the Stooges, and Nirvana propped up on the mixing board for divine guidance, the band knocked out dozens of Replacements-style bash 'n' pop songs over two separate sessions. |
