I'm So Glad (Nehemiah James) 10.01 Grande Ballroom Remastered V2 Quality: The original recording was done with quality equipment off the PA mixer with the balance favouring the guitar and vocals. The remaster has significantly improved bass presence and lifted the drums especially the bass drums. The guitar retains its attack unlike the remasters on "Those Were The Days". Volume variations, dropouts have been smoothed and pitch corrected. Noise levels were not overly high but again have been reduced, especially the layers of tape noise. Final remaster quality is now extremely high. The latest remaster is from a digital copy of the master tape or quality 2nd gen at worst! One of THE great Rock concerts! And damn good sound - very live and up front. http://twtd.bluemountains.net.au/cream/rem/theremasters.htm

Where in doubt, I've erred on the side of too few tracks rather than too many, since I figure that'll be easier to fix. If you're reading this and you know how the tracking _should_ look, please send along a corrected tracklist so I can fix it. The entire show can be seamlessly reassembled if you've got longer media or don't like where I've put the disc break. There were at least two other rigs present (a tabletop at the frontmost drink rail center, and the house rig); if you have access to either of those tapes, I'd like to hear how they turned out. And a warning to the headphone listeners: during (what I've tracked as) the last song of the set (d2t7), Skerik is using one of those jeep-bass emitters, and it's just unbelievably loud in the low frequencies. Even if you think you've got the volume at a reasonable level, turn down a bit; your ears will thank you.

Finney [dfinney@cts.com] Sent: Friday, April 21, 2000 7:26 PM To: siteops@etree.org Subject: Hosting Request gd74-10-20 I just got this show from the Frank's Picks round 4 tree. This date has apparently not yet been circulated on etree, so I'll upload it to your site if you'd like it. The tree also included 10-18 and 10-19, but these seem to have been circulated already. If anyone feels that these copies should be cuirculated as well, I'm happy to oblige. from the web page (http://frankspicks.org/fp4_Source_tape_info.htm): <snip> From: Rob Bertrando Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 17:17:22 -0800 Subject: Oct 1974 Winterland AUDs The best sounding AUDs of this run (all 5 nights) were made by Charles Conner (sp?), using a Sony ECM-22P into a highly modified Sony mono portable. There is occasional wow/flutter, but the frequency response is great, and the hiss low. I started the distribution of the "audiency"-sounding SBDs of the last three nights, in late 1976. They came to me on cassette, from Jerry Wexler's (of Atlantic Records fame) son or nephew, I forget the exact connection. I and about 4 others copied them to reel at that time, and copies have flowed since. Much more recently, SBDs of the 16th and 17th have surfaced, without the audience mix. I don't know if anyone has similar mixes of the last three nights for trade or listening. </snip> dfinney@cts.com

The original info file had incorrect mic, deck and playback information ("Nak CM100 shotgun mics into a Sony TCD5M [lead deck] with Dolby B noise reduction on [Maxell MX 90 Metal tape]; master transferred to digital via Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1 with azimuth alignment"). The easytree description then corrected the mic and deck information to what is abovce, but retained incorrect reference to a cassette transfer. As of now, then, this information is not 100% certain. - Furthermore, the original flac files, though not the info file, were incorrectly identified as from 08-25, the next night. The ffps at db.etree.org reflect renaming of the files to the correct date.

The actual date for the show was April 21st, 1972 The concert billing was: West Bruce and Laing Procol Harum and Mahavishnu Orchestra (as the opening act -- imagine that!) Also, this is the show that John McLaughlin tried to convince CBS to release officially and we all know where that went...sad! Hopefully someday CBS will open their vaults and release the complete show! Please help support the artists by buying their officialy released music!

From Bruce Harvie: It was billed as "The Whites", with Skaggs and Douglas in the band, but the surprise opening band was Skaggs, Rice, Bush, Phillips, and Douglas playing selections from "Manzanita" and other stuff from that era. The announcer said that they were broadcasting the show, so I heading out to the lobby and called my friend to slap a reel on the Ampex--we missed the first 30 seconds of "Little Cabin Home..." Oh well... The cool part of the show was the passing of the mando/fiddle between Sam and Ricky and noting the differences in the styles. Downside: Ricky raps... The Whites had a hard time following that set, BTW...

I Wanna Be Your Dog Note: I just finished reading Greg Kots new book "Wilco: Learning How to Die". Quite a lot of fun and interesting reading too. In the book, the band's (to become) manager Toni Margherita is desribed as saying he didn't think all that much of Uncle Tupelo at first. They were "OK", for a local band. Tweedy begged him to come see them, but even after seeing them, he wasn't all that impressed. But, an acoustic performance in 1988 was different. Margherita is quoted as saying: "Up till then it had just been a bunch of kids playing with a lot of energy and volume. But I walked out of there that night thinking that I should do everything I could to help these guys. I could finally hear the songs." That comment resonated with me in that this recording was what first really got me hooked on UT. Although short, it's wonderful and the magic is there. Enjoy!!!
