??/??/76 Yvette Crichton Household cdr 1 A-- Recorded in one of Bob's girlfriend's houses this tape includes many songs that Bob never released and some that would become some of his most famous classics. The mood is really relaxed and Bob seems to be in a really great mood often laughing out loud at some of the things he is singing. He then gets a bit more serious with the deeply religious God of All Ages where he is accompanied by the heartbeat rhythm of a bongo drum. Rumors is also another great highlight featuring some fantastic vocal form. Bob on this tape also composes some of jammin as well as a very early rendition of Easy Skanking. He also chats a bit between songs about opening a hospital in Ethiopia. The tape closes out with Oh What a Day, which is a long very early version of what would become Misty Morning.

01/27/86 The Ritz cdr 1 A Master Soundboard Soundcraftsman 16x4>Sony D5>Cool Edit>CD Wave>SHN From Dan Cole's collection of JGB cassettes - he had it listed as Master Soundboard and was using a Sony D5 recorder at the time. I recorded directly from his master tape to my computer using Cool Edit, divided the tracks using CD Wave and then converted to SHN before recording my copy onto cd. Dan had this to say about recording this show "Garcia and Kahn, The Ritz 1/27-28/86, An old buddy of mine from college was living in New York City and was employed as the light man at the Palladium. He knew the soundman at the Ritz and had my tape deck hooked into the soundboard before I could even score a ticket. They also had a killer video feed going on, but they wouldn't allow me to patch in with the portable VCR I had brought with me." Filler on LOM 4-12-75

Taped and transferred by Ed Perlstein, EAC > SHN by Joe Jupille (jjoops AT attbi DOT com). - I consider this to be an essential part of any music collection. There is a long-circulating .shn set which has the advantage of having been .shn'd without any DAE. This set has the (to me, more important!) advantage of being more complete, including everything up to the point that the plug was pulled on Ed Perlstein's deck. The other set also has the emcee announcing "Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders" just as they launch into Think, but I could not get it patched in very cleanly, and so I left the CDs as they were mastered. The two sources sound equally excellent to my ears. - d2t04 Roadrunner cuts in, unknown missing - The plug was pulled on the board patch during Mystery Train. For the whole of the song, the R channel was considerably weaker than the left, and from 3:05.357 until the end it was basically missing. Until that point I applied a 3.0db volume gain, and after that point I patched the L channel over the R. Mystery Train then cuts out @ 3:39. I faded down the last 0.25 seconds to ease the pain of the cut.

May have another reel generation though. Music was very slow (offspeed recorder somewhere in the history). I increased the speed by 4% and this sounded pretty good. Didn't want to go too far. Used a light continuous noise filter to remove a bit of the tape hiss. Cleaned up a few assorted pops and gliches... There was distortion in Good Morning Little Schoolgirl that could not be improved. All editing done with Diamond Cut Millennium software.

This set assembles complete copies of the 11th and the 12th in the best quality circulating. Except for the middle portion of the 11th, sound is excellent throughout; this inferior segment is listenable while leaving definite room for improvement if an upgrade shows up; we haven't been able to find one & don't want to delay further. Many people gave help on the way to creating this set of CDs. Dave Greenberg did the final masters. Jack Warner was instrumental in providing the difficult composite for the 2nd disc of 12/11/69, which was first mastered by Scott Clugston. RB, KW, JN and HB also provided important assistance. Jim Powell instigated the project and writes these notes. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland.

Notes: --audience patch in Playin' from 4:16 to 5:06 --during the latter half of Playin', several portions of the track were converted to mono to compensate for lengthy channel dropouts --audience patch in Jack Straw from 3:39 to 4:04 --during O1, there is an area converted to mono due to a large channel dropout --minor glitch at 5:37 in Eyes --noticeable mix/volume fluctuations during Eyes --audience patch in Eyes from 8:25 to 10:54

D2 *1 Repaired splice at 19:03 (redundant material at both sides of splice--no music missing). *2 Reduced digital static in right channel at 00:31 (both=left). *3 Joined splice at 01:21 by removing about one second of material, with attention to keeping the backbeat intact. An alternate track for Big River is provided (gd73-03-16d2t09alt.shn) as a more pleasant workaround for the splice. For this alternate track, the splice was joined at 00:58 by removing about 29 seconds of material--the second chorus and second verse were removed. D3 *1 Removed digital static at 05:00 and 22:15; Repaired splice at 18:18 (a total of about 12 seconds of redundant material at both sides of splice--no music missing). *2 Borrowed Seth Jackson's excellent audience patch to repair splice at 07:37 to 08:07. *3 Some instances of static from sound system problem remain. In addition to the edits noted above, some "dead air" on the tape was removed from each disc.

We have patched in from an AUD master the first 15:22 of Seastones, the tail end of Sunshine Daydream, and US Blues, all missing on the circulating MSR D. 07/18/76 Orpheum Theatre cdr 3 A Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com on 2/14/2002. Some tracks are from an FM source. All PreFM versions are this way. More than 30 small dropouts and glitches were repaired. Most of these problems seem to be the same as would be found in HD transfers where the buffer settings were improperly set. A/D conversion by Rob Bertrando, and first seeded by Darrin Sacks [etree shn id 302]. Probably derives from the tape originally recorded by Hugh Barroll. Supplies several set two patches.EDITING NOTES: Sound Forge XP 4.5 was used for edits as noted below, and to recompile the wavs into a single wav file in preparation for final retracking. CDWav was used to cut tracks along sector boundaries. shntool was used to confirm all wav files were cut on sector boundaries. mkwACT was used to convert shn>wav, wav>shn, and create the md5. 1. Entire first set: reduced pitch by -.566 semitones throughout set one to bring the pitch of SBD #1 within 0.03% of SBD #2 (using the Peggy-O on each source for direct comparison) 2. Half Step: attenuated severe mixing problems by significantly raising amplitude of first ~4.5 secs (which was inaudible on source CD); and lowering amplitude less drastically for the next ~1.5 secs 3. LL Rain: attenuated cassette tape flip @4:55 by splicing the two segments almost flush (no cross fade or overlap). The segment before the splice was unaltered, and the segment after the splice was softened with a short fade-in. 4. tuning: entire track supplied by AUD 5. Jam #1: first ~50 secs patched by AUD 6. Jam #1: 1:26 to 1:52 patched by SBD #3 7. Jam #1: last 0:11 patched by AUD (patch starts @8:02) 8. Drums: entire track supplied by AUD 9. Jam #2: first 0:05 patched by AUD 10. Playin (reprise): last 4:29 patched by AUD (patch starts @1:46) 11. Around: entire track supplied by AUD KNOWN FLAWS REMAINING: (1) The first 3 notes of Half Step are missing; (2) Distortion is present in first ~4.5 seconds of Half Step, where amplitude was raised as much as possible; (3) Most mix problems were left untouched, and persist through the first two songs of set one [Half Step> Franklin's]. The levels are re-adjusted several times before settling on a satisfactory mix partway through Franklin's; (4) A cut in LL Rain remains at the cassette tape flip. Probably ~2 seconds are missing. Goode (+) Notes: Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com on April 3, 2003. The first sounds like it was from a different source than the second set. The channels were reversed on the first set, as well. The channels were corrected prior to processing. Because of the difference in sound quality between the first and second sets, they were processed separately. The objective, as well as improving the sonic quality, was to match the sound from set to set, as close as possible. The last 20 minutes of the show is patched from a Soundboard/Audience source and was also processed separately. The patches on d1t01 and d3t03 were done by others prior to receiving the show. CD mastering by slip, EAC > FLAC by Joe Jupille. Notes: - Really nice tape of a show that is a pleasure to listen to. - Patch material was provided by Willy Munder's seed of this show, shnid 9829. This included the first 3:14 of the opening track, everything from the final reverb note of Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie through 0:46 of On the Road Again (likely tape flip from the master), and everything from about ten seconds after the end of Oh Boy (i.e., about three minutes of tuning and end-of-show talk). That seed is pretty good but is plagued by intermittent static (which you can hear in the first second or so of the emcee talk on t01). This master strikes me as better overall, in any case.

Also on the same track after the song is over @ 8:06 thru 8:09 many tiny drop outs un fixable as well. I zoomed in on the wav and they are on both channels. D1t02(Walkin' Blues) Major static @ 1:56 fixed. I copied right channel to the left and pasted. Also left to the right through out that second, it is still there but not as bad as it was. D2t02(Help On The Way) Static from 1:28 thru 1:30 un fixable. D2t04(Franklin's Tower) Drop outs and static @ 5:40 thru 6:07 patched in with aud source, also static from 10:12 thru 10:14 left channel removed and replaced with right channel the spot is still a little ruff but much better. D2t05(Estimated Prophet) Pop left channel @ 6:11 replace with right channel , click @ 10:56 removed with FFT filter Low Pass 4000 Hz. D2t06(Terrapin Station) Static both channels from 1:48 thru 1:51 I used noise reduction to filter it out. Also static @ 5:39 filtered as well but still present. D3t01 (Jam) Cass. flip @ 8:51 , digi pop both channels @ 9:34 removed. D3t03(Stella Blue) Major Cut @ :56 with over 2 minutes missing! I patched in the aud from :56 thru 2:47. D3t04 (Not Fade Away) Digi static both channels from :57 thru 1:02 I used noise reduction to reduce most of the static. I used the aud to do patches only where there was missing music. I could have patched in on the static spots but it would hinder the quality of the SBD recording. Did I miss anything? After pulling all my hair out on this one to try to get it right. 02/21/95 Delta Center cdr 2 A not bad for 1995 There are some problems with the recording at the end of "That Would Be Something" and the beginning of "Drums". Sounds like it could be a mic overloading. Also, during various points of the second set, soundboard static is audible. It is most noticeable at the end of "Foolish Heart" and at the end of "Sugar Magnolia". These flaws are believed to exist on all circulating copies.

How Sweet lacked about nine seconds at the every end, which I patched in along with the set break announcement and crowd. I patched about 23 seconds of missing material over the reel flip in Mystery Train. Patch material was provided by the amazing audience recording made by Bob Menke and Louis Falanga (Sony ECM-250 + Sony ECM-270 mics [onstage] > Sony TC-152 master cassettes). I re-.shn'd other tracks to make them seekable, hence the all new md5s. - No flaws noted.

12/10/77 Warner Theater cdr 3 A- The source is how the source discs were given to me. Due to the almost non-existant tape hiss, it is very likely that this is, in fact, directly from the master audience cassette. This is a true FOB tape, and the audience can be very chatty at times (you'll hear some nice conversations between songs and some interesting song requests) but usually quiet down while the songs are actually playing. This is a great recording of a superb '77 show. --Ben Wirth *The taper never seems to get fully situated or happy with the way things are going as there are numerous spots of volume drops/changes, channel drops, channel swaps, and some dropouts at various points. It is also of note that almost none of the track transitions are continuous...the taper seems to like pausing the tape after every song...this causes the start of almost all the tracks to be missing some material...I tried my best to edit this in a way in which it is a more smooth listen than the original hard cuts.

Reel > CD by Ed Perlstein, EAC > SHN by Joe Jupille (jjoops AT attbi DOT com).Notes/Flaws: - Amazing material!!! Essence of Legion of Mary -- nothing but pure, unadulterated instrumentals. Among many, many highlights, I will simply note that this version of People Make the World Go 'Round is about five times longer than any of the many other versions in circulation. It really takes the tune places you always thought it should have gone, but never seemed to. I felt similarly at many points during this material. - This is a mono recording. - Most songs clip in. - Favela faded to a splice @ 10:42 on the original CD copy, but this turned out to be during an 18-second repeated section. Similarly, Bossa Martin faded to a splice @ 7:57, but this was during a 48 second repeated section. Both obviously stem from analog generations somewhere up the line. I edited them out, and the tunes are seamlessly intact. - Pennies From Heaven splice @ 10:46. This is most probably a tape flip from the master. There is also a bit of very light static around 16:55-16:56, which I could not fix. - This is probably not the whole show, since the band is tuning when the tape cuts out.

08/31/90 King's Lynn LA's cdr 2 B the short scoop on this show-Editing: There were some significant problems with this recording. The master is spread over 3 sides of 2 C90 cassettes. Side 1 - Despite some incessant talkers towards the end of the side - came out OK. After the first flip, the recording levels are messed up (probably dirt on the record head). Consequently the Left channel takes an enormous drop. After the second flip, evidently there were some additional mechanical problems - the recording was restarted several times until the speed was running properly. (There are 4 short bursts of audience noise that are running v-e-r-y slow - ie the recording speed was way too fast). Lucky I noticed this at the time, I guess, or the rest of the recording would have been unlistenable. 13 years later, I have no specific memories of this show or this recording issue. Fortunately there were long enough gaps between songs during both flips that no music was lost. However the enormous amplification necessary to bring the Left channel to match the Right channel means that the background noise and hiss on the Left channel is very noticable after the first flip. To be precise: The first C90 side was amplified by +8/+7db L/R respectively The second C90 side was amplified by +23/+4db The third C90 side was amplified by +18/+7db This normalisation resulted in a single instance of clipping on each side, which I manually fixed. (There was also a separate flaw at 49:16:31 of the original captured audio which I fixed - using CEP's "remove single click" - prior to the normalisation). Each side was then rejoined - part 1 to part 2 wouldn't go smoothly, so there is a brief silence at the 45-minute mark. Part 2 to part 3 was joined via an overlap and cross-fade - eliminating the incorrect speed segments. There was a brief glitch at 1:31 of d1t01, which I repaired by removing it entirely and making the join as smooth as possible. A fraction of a second is missing. (It was also necessary to up the volume prior to this join). I have not applied any eq to this recording.

01/27/88 Gallagher's cdr 3 B This show has been on a journey through the Cool Edit. Using the Noise Reduction Feature, I have removed 2/3 of the hiss from this copy. There is still a little bit of hiss, but it comes and goes in waves instead of a constant annoyance. Before I did this, the hiss was over the music, now it is behind it. The music was left completely unaltered in this process. When the show was originally recorded, the analog taper kept reseting their levels louder and louder to the point where there is some vibration. No real distortion, just some annoying vibration so don't crank these full throddle.I tried various tools to try and fix it.I could not get it to my liking so I chose to leave it alone. About 2 minutes of Lizards is missing. It is a very strange time for an analog flip, but if this taper used 2 tapes for a 3 set show, the timing matches up. This is a fabulous show.If I had to give it a grade for quality... If it was recorded after 1993 it would be a "C". Since it was recorded in 1988 and I was able to remove most of the hiss, I give it an "A--". Linda Webster

03/11/88 Johnson State College cdr 2 B -This is definitely an audience recording judging by the R/L levels and the "large" amount of crowd noise. You are able to hear conversations at certain points. This, however, does not detract from the show since this is an excellent recording. After the opening, Les does a rap about a weed, then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop and camp, where they start yodelling. John McEuen and Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel tune. The story continues with Jimmy & Poster meet up with four "Elvii" on the edge of Las Vegas and have a duel. The four Elvis's sing the first few verses of "Suspicious Minds" and then Fish continues. Jimmy (Fish?) is victorious. Then the dog/cat fight. Harpua wins and the song finishes. At some point everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the drummer for Primus, shows up for "Suzy Greenberg". Everyone stays onstage for Suzy Greenberg, which includes a "Suzy-Q" jam.

It's notable for it's very good performance and the rare encore of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'. A song that hadn't been played for a few years at that time and has never ever been played since then. 'Roger Waters' shows some real venom in 'Pigs' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond, pt.VI-XI' features some outstanding jamming which cannot be heard on the original studio recording.

I removed the silence using Soundforge 5 and created a new md5. Transition is noticeable because they don't match up at all, but better than just 20 seconds of nothingness in my opinion and all the missing stuff is between songs. The seed isn't perfect, but it IS another 2001 SBD!

I think I did a damn good job of improving the overall sound of the recording (not that it was that bad to begin with ;) - sector boundary's confirmed with shntool v2.0.3

01/09/06 Jam Cruise 4 - Pool Deck cdr 3 A NOTES: The levels and tracking on this recording aren't the best. Believe the Lie is split over disc 2 and 3. Other tracks are combined when they shouldn't be. This is still a very enjoyable listen, so don't hesitate to download.

10/04/96 Performance Hall cdr 2 A- Notes: I downloaded the shn fileset of this show from weenftp.org, which is the same fileset everyone has where all tracks fade out in-between songs. I converted the shns to wav (a lossless step), loaded each track into Soundforge and crossfaded them to their preceding track. The fades originally applied to each track (for the Master knows what reason) were quite long and occasionally overlapped banter, I did my best to crossfade as carefully as possible so as to miss no stage banter, but you may still be able to detect slightly reduced volume in a few spots. However, since the show now flows completely uninterupted across each disc that seems to me only a marginal concern. After everything was edited together as one track, I resplit them into individual tracks using Cd Wave Editor, renamed the files, and converted them to FLAC (a lossless step) with an encoding level of 8, as well as the Verify and Align on Sector Boundaries boxes checked.
