-----
D1T7- Glitch at about 4:23
"From Good Ole San Francisco, the Good Ole Grateful Dead". This
is a very interesting tape, recorded as the band was moving from
the Live/Dead sound to the Workingman's Dead sound. Note the C&W
twang in Bob Weir's voice and the alternative arrangements in some
familiar songs. According to Deadlists, Jerry plays pedal steel
guitar on "Slewfoot" , on "Dire Wolf" (Weir on vocals!) and on
"Green Grass".
Digitized from a cassette which, reportedly,
was made by Dick Latvala.
Apparently, the original recording of "Slewfoot" had the levels set too high
for the first several seconds of the song. On the cassette, this portion
didn't appear to be saturated, but did have higher levels than the rest of
the tape. This portion was captured separately from the rest of the tape,
then spliced together later. This explains the distorted sound at the
beginning even though the average level is the same throughout. The rest of
the song is in pretty good shape, but the subsequent songs sound much
better.
There is some tape noise in "Dire Wolf", which is sung by Bob Weir. "Baby
Blue" has an internal cut, plus it is clipped at the end.

Taper's Notes:
The performance itself was top-notch, so I'm glad the tape came out well.
I humbly think that this is a great sounding recording, and is completely
worth a good listen. There are absolutely no "glitches" to endure
in the recording, and there is more than 12 hours of music.
There are, however, two "caveats" that should be included for the more
obsessive [like me] among us:
1) THE FIRST SET (Although I like the way it sounds...)
The first set of the first show [RatDog 12/30] was taped without any "pad",
but I didn't like the way the deck's level indicators behaved [due to the
shotgun capsules' extra-mighty ability to gather sound], so after that set
I switched on the Tascam's 20dB pad and all the rest of the sets were recorded
with the pad. I'm glad I did that because I like the final result much better.
Turning the pad on allows me to turn up the input levels and get a
livelier response from the Tascam. I think the character of the
sound improved, too. But you might never have known if I didn't say so. :-)
2) THE ONLY [fixed] "FLAW" (I truly doubt you'll ever hear where it was...)
I fixed it, so this recording you have is entirely without glitches, no worries.
But for those of you who read this far, you must be into this stuff, so:
In the Crusader Rabbit set, during "The Wheel", while they are singing,
my master DAT tape had a very slight (far less than a second) dropout.
it was powerfully annoying, but easily fixable by copying a similar
far less than a second from the next verse, while they are singing the same part
of the same word, and gently easing it into the little gap. You'll never notice.
I don't mind it at all, and I'm picky about that kind of stuff.
Anyway, I'm really happy with the results, so clear 12 hours on your schedule...
Kevin

(* ='s there was a small pyramid on the center of the stage made of copper tubing with the main structure of the huge mandala (made up of crystals and other semi precious stones) housed within the base of the pyramid. There were also several stones held in the top section of the pyramid (which did not come to a point but rather the 4 side tubes connected to a circle also made of tubing at the top), and the mic body was clamped off the rear of the pyramid, almost at the top of the 2' 1/2" structure. I was able to get the mic centered this way, and yet from the back of the room the mics were extreamly hard to notice.
