A long long time ago, there was a wondrous thing called “progressive” or “free-form” radio. These were the days when rock radio stations were programmed by people who actually knew and loved music, rather than the accountants and marketing analysts who now control the airwaves. During this time it was possible to hear, in a single program, music by artists as diverse as the Beatles, Ravi Shankar, and Miles Davis, to name but a few, picked and played by DJs who spoke to, rather than at, their audience. San Francisco’s KMPX-FM was one of those pioneering stations in this adventurous era of radio. They were instrumental in letting the world know about the explosion of great music in the Bay Area in the late 60s.
One fine late April evening in 1967, the station’s co-founder, the legendary Tom “Big Daddy” Donahue, invited Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia to play guest DJs on his nightly KMPX show. Phil and Jerry discussed the Grateful Dead’s then-brand-new debut album (they promised the next one would be much better!), as well as such arcane topics as a top-secret military project to develop a “sound gun” that could kill or maim everyone for miles around with super-low-frequencies. Best of all, they brought along some of their favorite records to play on the air. As you might expect, it was a most unpredictable batch of tunes indeed. |

DeadLists notes: The circulating versions of these songs are different from the versions on the single and on "What a Long Strange trip It's Been" (which are the same) and therefore are listed separately. These versions are often found as filler on tapes of the 11/10,11/67 Shrine shows. There is a pause between the end of Born Cross-Eyed and the Feedback. Towards the end of Dark Star Pigpen(?) says "It drags. It drags right there". There is no banjo at the end either, but there is an acoustic guitar heard towards the beginning. |

Admin Note: I accidentally merged 2 existing, identical-looking, undistinguished records, although both an early and late show were played. So, this is now a joint entry for both gigs. Two options: a) Use this record, and just mark in your notes which one you have. b) I will also accept 2 more separately-created late, early records if someone cares to make them. Sorry! Diana

you can hear ranting and raving and generally going on about Viet Nam. It would
seem the band kind of lets her state her piece in its entirety before going into
the Other One. Very cool.
The whole second CD is very cool. The jam after the Cryptical reprise is
great. It goes into a kind of lulling drum beat which goes on for a few minutes
(what I called Drums again, even though it isn't in the official setlist) before
Phil takes it up and you hear the definite Main Ten bass line. A great Main Ten
jam that goes on for about 4 1/2 minutes or so before Bobby takes it into Sugar
Magnolia.
First version of Sugar Magnolia. Very cool :) No, it doesn't rock, but up
until now, the earliest version I'd ever heard was the one from the famed
6/24/70 Cap Theater show, which I thought was unusual enough to be of historical
significance. This one is also interesting historically.
Between Top of the World and Casey Jones the band sits around talking to the
crowd and deciding what to play next. What kills me is Bobby's comment: "Hey,
there's a guy over there, he's always over there and he always yells out 'Golden
Road!'. I wanna know who he is, because man, you really take the cake. To tell
you the truth we've forgotten how to play that song" or something like that.
You can also hear several suggestions for songs, among them "White Rabbit",
which cracks up the crowd.
Great stuff. Let's get it out there. The acoustic set is pretty
straight-forward, but it's the electric set I think that really shines. The
boys just seems to be having a great time the whole show." |

DSH Show Record Notes: I merged the former xx/xx/74 China-Rider entry to prepare for a shn link, hich needs the ?? format. A former ??/??/74 listing is apparently part of "Dick's Gift", Legion of Mary/Jerry Garcia material, and doesn't really belong in the Grateful Dead listing. |
