-------COMMENTS-------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Ihor Slabicky circulating video tape copies of Festival Express film footage show the Don't Ease from this show (daytime) , the New Speedway Boogie (electric), and the Hard To Handle. The video also contains a C.C. Rider from this show (nightime) from an all-star Jam. Slabicky lists personnel as follows: Garcia is playing his red Gibson, Kreutzmann on tambourine, Sylvia Tyson of The Great Speckled Bird on vocals with other members of this band Jim Colegrove on bass, Buddy Cage on pedal steel, N.D. Smart on Drums, and Amos Garrett on lead guitar, Delaney Bramlett on guitar, the organ player from Delaney and Bonnie's group, and Ian Tyson on acoustic guitar. C.C. Rider is followed by Will The Circle Be Unbroken, with Bonnie Bramlett on vocals.
It has been claimed that there was a free concert following this show during which Janis joined the Dead for Lovelight. Perhaps the all-star Jam Slabicky refers to comes from this free concert, since he identifies it as night-time footage. Dwight Holmes reports that he waited in line for a show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on 7/5/70, where it was announced around 5:00 PM that the Dead had cancelled.
This and the next 3 shows listed (through 7/3/70) were as part of the Trans Continental Pop Festival tour by train across Canada with Janis and the Band among a great many others. See Might As Well for a response (the title quotes Janis). Reporedly there are 100 hours of raw film footage from the tour which may be in process of being edited into a feature documentary. SBD of Janis's awesome set from Toronto 6/27/70 is in circulation; as filler it has two songs listed as from Calgary 7/4/70.

Audio:
Teddy GoodBear AUD Front Row Center (see below)
Note: After capturing the video, the audience soundtrack (from the video) was exported and then loaded into Cool Edit Pro along with a copy of the aud audio. Then, an unique note at approximately 1 minute intervals on the video soundtrack was found and matched to the same note from the sbd. Some modification (ie stretching or shrinking) to the length of these segment was required in order for the sbd to flawlessly match the captured video. The original video audience track was then mixed and both tracks imported as background music prior to creating the master dvd.
The video was captured at 720x480 resolution (DVD) at 4500bits\sec to create the original mpeg2 file. After the sound was imported and the dvd burned, the mpeg2 file was rendered to 352x240 to make VCD disks. Takes either (1) dvds or (1) vcds.
How was the sound mixed??? I'm almost afraid to say considering how much more experience there is in sound production within the grateful dead trading community that I almost feel like a child just playing with blocks in comparison. This is what I did though:
The video sound was mostly low end and muffled - probably due to generation loss during transfers. The only other source is an audience from a teddy goodbear boombox recording that is very metallic and mostly high end - the compendium gave it a C.
I removed some hiss from the video track (probably caused by multigeneration transfers) and then where no audience existed boosted the signal to 75% peak. Both channels from the video are identical.
Teddy was pretty quick on the pause button, so the audience is cut drastically between songs - during these patches only the video sound exists. The audience recording also has identical left and right channels.
Where both video and audience exist - I mixed them together as follows:
Left channel: video boosted to 75% peak and audience reduced to 50% peak
Right channel: video boosted to 50% peak and audience reduced to 75% peak
The resulting mix gives an illusion that there is a difference between the channels and seems to be much fuller than either source alone.
Audio\Video Flaws:
1) The first 1 minute 04.013 seconds of the start of the video were added from the video soundtrack to give a better lead in.
2) Teddy's audience track was mixed during the entire Estimated Prophit and stops 10.984 seconds after the end of the song.
3) The next 2 minutes 22 seconds of the video have only the video soundtrack. There is a half second splice in the video after this.
4) When the video restarts, Teddy's audience track was mixed during the entire Deal and stops 7.140 seconds after the end of the song.
5) The next 5.237 seconds of the video have only the video soundtrack. There is a 0.300 second splice in the video after this to end the set.
6) The next 2 minutes 10.064 seconds of the video have only the video soundtrack.
7) 11.007 seconds before Good Lovin' starts, Teddy's audience track is avaiable. It was mixed in during the entire Good Lovin' and stops 2.120 seconds after the end of the song.
8) The next 1 minutes 40.322 seconds of the video have only the video soundtrack.
9) 3.189 seconds before Mississippi Halfstep starts, Teddy's audience is avaiable. It was mixed in during the entire song and stops 13.234 seconds after the end of the song.
10) The next 2 minutes 10.830 seconds of the video have only the video soundtrack.
11) 14.582 seconds before Dancin' In The Streets starts, Teddy's audience is avaiable. It was mixed in during the rest of the video (Dancin'>Drums>Eyes//.
12) Video is cut after about 1 minute 30 seconds into Eyes. If anybody knows where the rest of this show is - please contact me at kevtobin@yahoo.com so I can complete it.

Video Source(s): Primary: Black and White 3 camera pro shot footage > ? > VHS >

using HUFFYUV codec > AVI > TMPGENC > MPEG
A secondary video source was used for Truckin through Around and Around.
I believe this came from Teddy Goodbear, but the exact source is unknown (from abgd).
The video is decent, but it gets washed out in some spots. The original soundtrack for
this source was horrible. The VHS tape I had (Primary Source) had several dropouts
during Truckin and cuts off near the beginning of Wharf Rat. I found it much simpler
to patch the whole track rather than attempt to splice it together.
Audio Source(s): Bertha Remaster of Master Reel source. SBD>>MR>>PCM>>DAT>>CDA(Toast)>>SHN>>DAW(Bertha)>>CDA/SHN
resynched with video using a vast array of audio tools mostly SoundForge 6 and Cool Edit Pro 2.0.
Patches to the soundtrack are noted below..
In a few spots between songs during set 1, the Audio was patched (with crossfades where possible) from
the primary video source's soundtrack. This was done where the sdbd tape did not have the material that
the video had.
I have no video of Minglewood. It was omitted.
Drums was cut on the video, There is more of the sdbd, but I left that audio out, so most of the Drums is missing.
I crossfaded the audio into the beginning of Truckin so it's a pretty seamless transition.
There are two audio 'dropouts' during Eyes. One long one (almost 30 seconds) and a second shorter dropout.
Believe it or not NO AUDIO is missing. I had to create the artificial dropouts to maintain audio synch.
The primary video source had several problems during these 'dropouts'.
I patched the very end of Wharf Rat through the first few seconds of Around and Around that
were missing from the 2nd video source's soundtrack. This should give an idea of what I was working with.
The video cuts during Around and Around, I let the Audio continue until the song is over.
The US Blues Encore is missing.
Notes: In a few spots there is some minor loss of synch (only noticeable if you watch very closely). This was due
to some tape warble in the primary source's audio which made a precise resynch impossible without severely affecting
the resynched audio track.
Also, the soundtrack for the secondary video source was so poor that I wound up resynching the video by eye
as any precise editing of that soundtrack was nearly impossible.
I spent almost three months on this project, so what you're getting is my best crack at this. It's the best
sounding most complete version available.

Notes:
Video appears to be shot from the lawn on a tripod. Occasional audience members block the camera, and Brent is all but absent except for a short "cameo" during his solo in Rooster. Overall, this a nice VCD from summer 1984. The synchronized SBD audio captures with sonic clarity what the boys were up to at this point in their career. Enjoy!
(1) Video starts 0:14 before audio kicks in.
(2) At end of Jack Straw, Phil says, "I wanted to kick it man..." (referring to all the balloons on stage).
(3) No audio from 06:47-08:07. I did not edit out the video so that we could watch Jerry & Parrisk rap as Jerry tunes before FOTD.
(4) Loser audio cuts in.
(5) Video ends before audio. I did not fade out the audio so that the complete 1st set could be enjoyed from start to finish.

* - Original VHS soundtrack was used for the Intro through the NYE countdown. It was also used to patch one portion of Drums
and One in Space where the SDBD source was missing material. One the SDBD, some of drums is cut out but the source was
crossfaded so it seems seemless, but it isn't. There was also a glitch in Space where about 5 seconds was missing. The
glitch was barely noticeable except all of a sudden I totall lost sync with the video. It took me a while to find it, but
I was able to patch in the video source and I crossfaded it somewhat.
Notes: There is some video weirdness during the end of Midnight Hour and Sugaree. This is also present on the master VHS. The sound is
not affected.

comments: This VCD presents a wonderful glimpse of the Grateful Dead during the Spring of 1987. This video--the final night of a 3-night stand at the Hampton Coliseum--was shot Phil-side. Most of the video catches Garcia up close. Garcia was in rare form this tour, having returned to active duty in 12/86 following health problems at the end of summer tour 1986. This video is comprised of three VCD-compliant MPEG-1 files that can be burned to a Video CD using VCDEasy (http://www.vcdeasy.org/).

-This 2 disc movie is comprised of 2 vcd-compliant mpeg-1 files.
-There was no text file or information included with the original mpegs.
-I have deduced that this movie contains footage from the following tours:Summer 1987, Fall 1987, Spring 1988, Summer 1988, Fall 1988
-No director/producer credits provided, by I suspect Justin Kreutzman is the culprit.

Video: MAC (8mm camera with dual Sony ECM 77-B mics > Sony EV-S1 8mm Recorder >
Videum 1000 Capture card > Ulead Videostudio version 6 > SVCD or VCD > VCD-compliant MPEG-1
Audio: SBD>DAT>CDR>EAC>Cool Edit Pro>Video
Note: After capturing the video, the audience soundtrack (from the video) was exported and then loaded into Cool Edit Pro along with a copy of the sbd audio. Then, an unique note at approximately 1 minute intervals on the video soundtrack was found and matched to the same note from the sbd. Some modification (ie stretching or shrinking) to the length of these segment was required in order for the sbd to flawlessly match the captured video. The original video audience track was then muted and the sbd tracks imported as background music prior to rendering the video file as either a vcd or svcd.
The video was captured at 480x480 resolution (SVCD) and 24bit RGBT compression for a fairly clean picture. The camera was on a tripod, a little shakey at times but not too bad. A 50-200mm lens was used for some great closeups. The SVCD format will play on most DVD players otherwise the VCD will. The SVCD format also includes a song menu. VCD format (352x240) was rendered from the svcd file and does not have the song menu, but does have the imported sbd audio as part of the file.
Flaws:
1) 1 min 24 secs had been cut from the dead space between Big River and Stagger Lee on the cd - I used the video audience soundtrack to fill in.
2) 3 seconds into Help on the Way, there was a 6 sec gap on the video. I filled in using the last frame before the gap that transitioned into the first frame after the gap with no cut in the music.
3) 32 sec gap during space (possible tape flip) was filled in using the video audience soundtrack.

Notes:
(1) Video starts 0:15 before audio kicks in.
(2) Short video drop out in 1st verse after 1st chorus @15:58.
(3) Audio from original avi source used to patch audio cut in SBD source from 35:23 - 36:24. This drop out in Good Lovin' during the guitar solo occurs in both the SBD>CASS(x) source and the SBD > PCM (analog output) source. Since I like the SBD>CASS(x) source (obtained from gdlive.com), I used it as the audio for this video project.

The Clifford Ball - 8/17/96 (Day 2) - Set 2 VCD
Plattsburgh Air Force Base
Plattsburgh, NY
Those of you who have seen the "Jimmy's Dream" video (a documentary about the
Clifford ball festival, including live footage) may have noticed that the live
footage spread throughout the video comprise the entirety of set 2 of the second
day. This video is comprised of these segments, joined together and mixed with a
high quality SBD source.
Track list:
The Curtain, Runaway Jim, It's Ice, Brother*, Fluffhead, Run Like an Antelope,
Golgi Apparatus, Slave to the Traffic Light
*With Ben & Jerry singing a verse.
Total length: 01:17:36.
VIDEO SOURCE INFO (for original "Jimmy's Dream" VCD):
Source: VHS Tape (EP mode, unknown generations)
Conversion: VHS > MPG1 via Sony VCR SLV-N60 (Composite Output) > ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Pro
Video Card (Composite Input) recorded via ATI Multimedia Center Digital VCR at VCD
setting, edited with TMPGEnc v2.57
VCD'ed by Clifford_Ball on 8/19/02
Tape provided by Trey2001
AUDIO SOURCE INFO (thanks to hilltop for the mp3s):
Taper: ?
Source: DSBD > DATx3 @44.1kHz > Event Gina S/PDIF IN @44.1kHz > WaveLab 3.0 > SHN
EXCEPT Slave: FM SBD > DAT > CD > EAC > WaveLab 3.0 (editing & hiss reduction) > SHN
seeded by Art H. Questions, comments-> artypants420@yahoo.com
> 256k mp3 lame enc mp3 engine
I would like to thank Morgan Bell for the FM Slave source. Without him, this seed wouldn't
have been possible. All editing and tracking was performed with WaveLab 3.0.
Editing: The FM Slave was passed through these following devices; DC Remover, and DeNoiser.
This was to remove most of the FM noise without disturbing the high-end freq's. The rest of
the show was tracked with WaveLab and had the following done; DC Remover. All tracks reside
on a sector boundary. This was throughly checked and rechecked numerous times before SHN
compression. Enjoy!
FINAL REMIX INFO:
Videos cut, pasted and synced to audio with Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 3.0.
(Video glitches and encoding errors were in the original VCD, sorry.)
MPEG video encoding by TMPGenc.
Mpeg audio encoding using the tooLAME mp2 encoder.
Mixed by Itay Chamiel, a.k.a. Phozz, 1/7/2003. email: itayc@hotmail.com
Those of you who may be itching about the mp3 in the audio lineage should note that
the audio format of VCD is "mp2", which is inferior to mp3. It is highly unlikely
that this video would have sounded any better had I converted the audio from a SHN.
