Disc 3 1x74 (25:15)
Set II (con't.)
1. Kitchen Mitts->
2. Run Like Hell
Detailed source info:
Tascam SR24 mixer used to mix down the tracks. Balanced XLR main outs
off the Mackie was sent to a TC Electronics Finalizer Express > digital
coax out > DAT.
Due to a glitch in the console they were using I was only
able to record onto 6 tracks. I knew the kick drum would be an issue
with the drum mix I was getting from lesser being it was outside and
the kick was going to have to be eq'ed with a bit more high end than
usual to make it carry out there like that. So I had that put on one of
the aux sends, but instead of the kick I was getting aron's vocals.
The other track that wasn't working was Jon's vocal. Instead of his
vocal I was getting sammy's hi-hats. Which explains why Jon's vocals
are missing from the beginning of Hot Air Balloon. Lesser and I
couldn't figure out why it was doing that so i just had him throw
jon's vocal on the main vocal group he was sending me and adding
the kick to the drum mix. There're also a couple instances of static
coming from marc's bass channel and the keys channel that I was
getting from the board.
Once I had the dats transfered I then took the wav's and dumped them
into my Wavelab program and did what I could to polish them up a bit
and add a little more punch to the mix. Did a bit of eq'ing, added some
compression and reverb, and improved the stereo imaging a little bit.

Show notes: Billed as "John Medeski's Keyboard Swirlfest" We were
expecting only Medeski to lead a solo-organ workshop and q&a session.
By the time we got there after soundcheck, we peeked in the door and saw
a bass amp and drum kit next to Medeski's keys, so we thought that even
if it wasn't MMW, it would be fun. Turned out it was all three guys.
What a treat to see them in an unannounced, unexpected third set of the

(1) Roger: If there's anybody sitting upstairs, I suggest they come downstairs to the right because of speakers that we're playing tapes and things through they set out around the hall. We didn't have enough to fit speakers upstairs as well as downstairs. So if there's anybody up there in that blackness, my advice would be to get down ???
Another band member: 'Cause there's plenty of seats.
(2) Roger: This next thing is a song that we recorded for a French film called "More" that's, um, it's called "Cymbaline."
(3) Roger: This next thing we're going to play is a new number ??? that we're recording for our new album and uh, after we finish this one we're going to take a break, regroup.
This Doesn't have a title yet, so if you think of anything clever let us know...
(4) Roger: ??? the album cuts, we'll do that later ??? Anyway, this is a song you've NEVER HEARD BEFORE, unless you've heard it before (drum roll/cymbal crash). I think they had a bit more electricity at the Fillmore than they have here. ??? Something was different ??? we got it all working, right Nick?
So anyway, this is called "The Embryo."
(5) Roger: We're going to play two things cleverly run together now, the first of which is a song called "Green is the Colour" and the second is an instrumental called "Careful With that Axe, Eugene."
(6) Roger: So that was an instrumental about foul murder. This is a song about... actually I'm not quite sure what this song is about but I know what it's called and it's called, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun."
(7) Roger: All right. This is the last tune we're going to play and it's off the album before last, before last and it's the title track and it's called "A Saucerful of Secrets."
Thank you all for coming. It's been nice seeing you, |

The first nine songs were recorded @ The Andersen Theater in NYC 11/23/70. Personnel includes SW, CW, JC, and Rick Grech. This disc is most notable for the inclusion of Rick Grech to the group near the latter part of their 70 tour. Along with playing bass, he also lends a hand with lead guitar. The disc finds a group which had been on the road for awhile bolstered by a new member to add new flavors to their arrangements. For fans of the 70 Tour this disc offers a rare glimpse of Traffic as a quartet, with the additional freedom offered by another member. The disc starts with an Intro by none other than Bill Graham. Medicated Goo is a bit disjointed although Winwood is in fine voice, and plays a lead somewhat reminiscent of Stranger to Himself from earlier in the tour. A nice version of Pearly Queen is next, with Grech on hand to lend support to the rhythm section, Chris's organ fills break loose a bit to add some color. For fans of the LP version of Empty Pages, this concert version is among the best I've heard. Steve's vocals and keyboard work (sounds like a Fender Rhodes or RMI electric piano) are top notch and the band seem to catch a good groove with this tune. An updated version of Heaven replete with a lovely jam with Chris on sax playing off a vamping Winwood organ to finish off the song, adds new insight to some older material. A change of pace highlights the next tunes. Forty Thousand Headmen offers some lovely flute work by Chris, and John Barleycorn is welcome for a version not marred by lyrical snafus as found in other versions from earlier in the tour. Who Knows finds Grech trying his hand at lead and rhythm guitar. The addition of guitar adds greatly to the feel of the tune, fleshing it out, adding more texture and spark. Steve's soloing is especially tasty and the song offers good ensemble playing. Every Mothers Son is a highlight. Other versions of this song lacked the lovely guitar riff that accompanies the opening keyboard parts. Although the addition of guitar to the song is welcome, Grech is unable to provide the caliber of playing that was on the studio version. One wonders if the reason the live 11/70 release was shelved because the band wasn't comfortable with Grech's guitar work. (That was one of the reasons given for the non-release of the material recorded just days before this gig. See The "Lost" Live Album.) Nevertheless this is a wonderful version of Every Mothers Son, with great tension built up by the dual piano, organ combo and not to be missed. The disc end uneventfully, with a version of "Freedom Rider" without "Glad" preceding. Shootout and Low Spark from On the Road are added as filler. The sound quality of this disc is excellent. These tapes may have been from a "Grateful Dead" soundboard of this show. At any rate well beyond typical bootleg sound!
Rating A
Winwood and possibly Capaldi joined the Grateful Dead onstage at the Anderson theater in New York City on November 23, 1970. On one tape of the show, Winwood's performance apparently begins during the song "Hard To Handle" (Pigpen vocals), where he plays Hammond organ, followed by "Railroad Blues" (Jerry Garcia vocals), then a medley of "Not Fade Away" / "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad" / "Not Fade Away". Steve attempts the lead vocal on the first "Not Fade Away", but apparently only knows part of the first verse and chorus, which he mangles in a couple of tries. He seems embarrassed, and sings in an odd, low register. Finally, he says "OK, fade away, I sang something" and drops out vocally for the rest of the song. He makes up for it in his playing, which is supportive and fits nicely into the Dead's sound. Bob Weir handles the lead vocals for the rest of the song, with Steve adding some backing. In about the last three minutes of the tape, Bill Graham comes on and introduces Traffic, who kick into "Medicated Goo" just before the tape ends. The Grateful Dead taped all of their own shows, apparently including supporting acts such as Cream and Traffic.

Review by Russell Parkinson:
[The Fillmore West] one hour show features Van and what will be the
Caledonia Soul Orchestra performing all the Moondance album except for
"Brand New Day". Also included are two songs from Astral Weeks and an
obligatory "Brown Eyed Girl".
The sound is either radio broadcast or soundboard and is very good,
especially considering the recording is nearly 30 years old.
The show kicks off with an excellent lively rendition of "Moondance". "Glad
Tidings" follows and although a quicker version than on the album this song
remains, for me anyway, filler. A lovely soulful "Crazy Love" is next. Van
sings this in his normal voice rather than falsetto. A six minute improvised
"Come Running" misses rather than hits. In the middle of this song the band
and van move off into a sixties rock organ/guitar kind of thing with some
improvised lyrics. On first listening it sounds great bit after a while I
find it disrupts a good song. Interesting but ultimately a bit
disappointing.
"The Way Young Lovers Do" is a blast, a great lively version with excellent
horns and piano. Everyone joins Glad Tidings in the filler category. "Brown
Eyed Girl" is pretty standard. A good "And it Stoned Me" runs into an
equally good "These Dreams of You". The Last Waltz version of "Caravan" has
always been my favorite but this one comes close. A thoroughly enjoyable
version of a great song.
Van winds up with the longest "Cypress Avenue" I've heard. Heavy on organ
and guitar you get to hear the ending twice! After the usual "its too late
to stop now!" van introduces the band and reprises the whole ending from
"and you were standing there." amazing. Van then encores with a superb
version of "Into The Mystic". Very soulful, this must be close to being the
best version of this song out there.
RATING
That organ/guitar thing sometimes dates this show but overall its a great
boot. Not quite essential, mainly due to the narrow range of material
played, I would give this a "Highly Recommended". If you are a big
"Moondance" fan then it's probably a must.

This was by far the best Wooten gig I had attended of the last three
I had seen. There were two shows, an early one and a late one, each
costing $10 to get inside. We drove down in time for the early one, only to
find that the late show had been sold out for some time. Oh well,
we figured, if we're hardcore enough to stay for the first one, they'll
probably just let us stay for the late one. Not so. The first
show finished after only 1.5 hrs. and the bartenders asked us to tear down
and clear out so they could sweep the floors and start letting in people
for the second show. CRAP! My buddy and I went into the bathroom
to hide, thinking maybe they wouldn't spot us. The bartender walked
into the john and we started acting like we were washing our hands.
He gave us a funny look and walked out. 5 minutes later, he walks back
in and we start acting like we're using the urinals. "Uh, guys? You
really have to leave now", he said. CRAP! We walk back into the bar
and start begging the sound guy to let us stay because we're the only
tapers who showed up. He laughs and walks off, bartenders now flanking
us on all sides while I'm tearing everything down.
Outside, we start looking for tickets with 15 minutes til showtime.
We aren't doing so good for a while and I'm thinking we should just punt
and go to a bar somewhere until someone walks up with an extra. It is
decided that I will go back in first and set the rig back up and tape alone
if need be. I go in and start setting up, the people I'm with show up
one by one with smiles on their faces. Apparently, there were some extra
tickets going around.
This time, the place is PACKED. No room to move, let alone dance.
I couldn't believe the turnout at the late show! People are psyched and
really drunk. The show lasted 3.5 hrs. I won't try to review the show,
just listen to it for yourself. I will say that the band was extremely
jazzed to receive such a large and supportive turnout at Ohio University.
These guys just wouldn't stop playing! The whole show metamorphosed
from a classic funk show (like the other Vic shows) to next-level jamming
People were falling down from exhaustion and Victor's bass-slapping took
on a rhythmic trance-like state. People were walking out of the club only
able to communicate in bass-speak. BBRRRIICK. BWAMP. BOWMP. BOWMP
Nobody gave
up and left prematurely, though. Folks were in it for the long haul.
The third disc of this show contains the 50 minute encore. One song.
I would highly recommend downloading this whole show in its entirety.
Sure it takes three discs and 3.5 hrs of your time to digest, but you'll be
glad you sat through the whole thing. Plus it'll make me feel better because o
what we had to go through to bring you this tape.
Enjoy.
