Noise Reduction notes:
There was a terrible
high-pitched buzz that ran from [start -> d1t08 08:23] and [d1t10 01:58 -> end].
I applied a notch filter in Cool Edit 2000 to these two passages to reduce the
noise, the downside of which was a slight attenuation in the high-end such as
cymbal/high-hat. I think this recording was a little heavy on the high-end
anyway, so perhaps this wasn't a downside after all -- you be the judge:
you can hear the notch filter kick in again at d1t10 01:58.
I also manually removed
numerous pops, the exact locations of which are at the end of this info file.

NOTES:
The volume of the masters was a little hot. The volumes for both sets were lowered with a 32bit EQ, then passed through the RBass and BBE processors to make up for the low levels of the bass and treble to balance everything back out before being dithered to 16bits with the L3 MultiMaximizer. |

*NOTES*
This show speaks for itself. After having the FOB source for so long, I was suprised that this show surfaced as a SBD. Amazing jams all nite long. There is a cut near the end of Fluffhead that could not be fixed. There also appears to be a sopt of stretched tape durring Possum, but it is short lived. Whoever taped this off the DAT did it correctly by leaving some overlaps on the flips....this made it a snap to put back together seamlessly.

Show Notes: Crimes featured the Dude of Life on vocals. Antelope included Brady Bunch theme teases and a Simpsons Signal, while It's Ice featured Random Note, All Fall Down, and Oom Pa Pa Signals. Amazing Grace was performed without microphones. Also, while several versions of YEM have teased Oye Como Va, this version featured an all-out jam of the song. Contact segued out of the YEM vocal jam. During Daniel, the band introduced and thanked each member of the crew.
**Mastering Notes**
The DAT was running flat. This was corrected in wavelab using the Time Stretch feature of the Audio Montage with http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=1472 used as the tuning reference. That same source was used to patch the cassette flips after Fluffhead, the end of the Big Ball Jam, and the encores.

Tech notes
I used EAC in secure mode to extract all tracks at 100%
no reported errors. Cool Edit Pro 2.0 was used to align &
synch both of the sources. CEP2.0 used to adjust the volume
for the SBD, AUD, center and LFE channels. Surcode CD Pro
DTS was used to encode to DTS.

Notes
Both sources were recorded quite low. I raised the levels
on the SBD 3db. I raised the levels on the AUD 4.5db.
Fade in/outs applied to the start and end of both discs.
Missing 0:02.888 crowd on SBD source between Weekapaug Groove
and Purple Rain (cassette flip). AUD trimmed accordingly to
match. This is smooth and most likely undetectable.
Missing 02:27.000 crowd on SBD source between last song
and the encores. AUD trimmed accordingly to match with 10
second crossfade. Smooth but ever so slightly detectable.
---------------------------------------------------------
More On DTS
Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel
sound, like DTS and Dolby Digital. While the Audio-CD
standard (Red Book) hasn't changed to accommodate these
new sound formats, it is still possible to go around the
specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a
regular Audio-CD. To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect
your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial)
to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure
that your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio CD, so the
first time you're trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you
must do a test to determine if it can. Begin with the
volume very low, start the disc and raise the volume
gradually. NEVER listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the
analogue audio outputs of your CD/DVD player.
Burning Instructions
Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any
normal Audio-CD from .shn files.
---------------------------------------------------------

**No DAE at all**
Transfer was done twice, then inverted over itself to
determine transfer errors. No errors were present or the
errors that were present were inaudible and due to differing
error correction on the DAT playbacks not transfer errors.
Detailed info: This was the seed for the phish.net tree in
early 1994; see google files (txt) contained in this file
set for more info. During this show there was occasional
distortion in one of the drum channels--due to either a mic
or mixer. This ispresent in all versions of the show, as it
came through the PA. This same noise is also present in the
8/20/93 Red Rocks SBD.
Minor Edits: Fades in/out beg/end of sets--5 sec in all
cases All of the below was done at the 48k level, so there
are edited and unedited 48k archive .shn's for archival:
First set cass flip: patched at the sample level as the
music overlapped on the first gen cass and subsequently on
the DAT--nothing missing at all!
Second set cass flip: cut out 45f and crossfade (duration
of 2s26f) Break between set-2 & encore: cut several frames
of silence and crossfade (duration of 4s45f) All crossfades
were done at: source: -infdb to 0db and the destination:
0db to -infdb. Edits took place after Paul and Silas,
Weekapaug and Slave.

Incredible show with major bust-outs!
Cities - last played 7/24/88 (531 shows)
Letter To Jimmy Page - last played 11/19/87 (546 shows)
I'm not sure of this but it seems as if Rift is sourced from a DSBD. The rest of the show is the source info. above.
Sweet Adeline, Ginseng Sullivan, & My Sweet One played acoustic and without mics.
Amazing Grace played acepella and without mics.
These songs sound very soft so just put on some headphones and crank it up! |

Slight fading during Theme. More than likely from the SBD
Not sure what happened to Amazing Grace. There was a drop after Weekapaug. The drop was also on the master DAT.
Definitely a killer show, and worth having for the face it's a nice, nice soundboard.

The Clifford Ball Day 2
Plattsburgh Air Force Base
Plattsburgh, NY
Source: DSBD -> DAT (99% of the show)
Old Home Place: Pre-FMSBD DAT
PYITE: 1st 1:05 DAUD DAT
Suzie Greenberg: 1st second taken from DAUD DAT
Slave Source: FMSBD Broadcast -> DAT -> CD -> EAC
Transfer:
All work was done on "Reba" which is the name for my DAW. DAT's transfered by TASCAM DA-40 -> Behringer DDX3216 Digital Mixer -> MARK OF THE UNICORN 896 HDR -> Dual XENON @ 800mHz PC...and a whole buch of other stuff.
All Editing done in the digital domain using Steinberg Wavelab 4.0f, CubaseVST/32 5.1
**NOTES**
I previously seeded this show in 2000, and after reading some of the user comments I was compelled to do a re-seed of this show. After listening real carefully and comparing the SBD portion to 3 different FMSBD sources, I have concluded that the soundboard portion is "flat" or runs slower than the FM source. So, from the point where it changes in PYITE > Golgi & all of disc 3 I took tuning measurements and discovered the DSBD was flat by 20cents. The pitch correction was done in Wavelab using the highest quality settings possible. Then PYITE was missing the fist minute from the DAT I had due to the taper "patching in" to the SBD feed from the Pre-FM source. The missing portion of Suzie was also repaired using the DAUD DAT I got my hands on. All edits were performed AFTER the DC Offset was removed from all material. The Slave came from Morgan Bell, who was nice enough to send me the FM source to use. The levels of Slave had to be adjusted to match the DSBD material. The Slave was edited in using exacting methods I would rather not go into here...the main changes are level reduction, DC Offset removal, and slight dithering. So here it is...after 80+hrs of listening and relistening, the best source available for this show IMHO.

"The Clifford Ball Flatbed Jam" (excerpt) 13:39
?mic > Sony D6 > Master DAT > Cass/1 > CDR > EAC > Soundforge 6.0 > FLAC
Tape to cdr transfer done with an HHB 830-burnit stand alone burner.
Notes:
This excerpt of the infamous Clifford Ball faltbed jam was taped on the fly by
Guy Gimbrone (RIP) and Justin Clutter of Roscoe, IL. Microphones used are unknown
at this time because when Guy made this tape for me we were not in the habit of listing
sources. One must be warned that this is a mobile recording with Guy holding the microphones
and Justin carrying the deck as they followed the flatbed, dodging cops on horseback and fans.
The microphones did get bumped and you will hear it. The only edits I made were to raise the
volume of the first 51 seconds where levels were set low and then lower the volume of the next
13 seconds where levels were high, the fade-in to begin existed on the source tape. The
excerpt ends abruptly and I left it that way without a fade because that is where the flatbed
started moving faster and in Guy and Justin's efforts to keep up, the microphones detached
from the deck. This is all was that was taped by Guy and Justin. Enjoy!
Seed created on 2/19/04 and dedicated to the memory of Guy Gimbrone (2/6/69 - 9/9/03), my best
friend whom I miss dearly. |

Tech Notes
SHN/FLAC's decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch the SBD & AUD sources. CEP2.0 used to adjust the volume
for the SBD, FOB, center and LFE channels. Surcode CD Pro
DTS was used to encode to DTS.

Notes
In most situations I time correct the AUD or rear channel
source to match the speed to the SBD or front channel source.
In this situation the AUD was off DAT and the SBD was off a
cassette. I decided to use the more time accurate source
(DAT>AUD) and time corrected the cassette SBD to match the
speed on the AUD.
The SBD was recorder rather low and uneven. I increased the
levels 4db on the left channel and 3db on the right. The
levels on the FOB were very punchy without overload. I reduced
this by -2db. In my experience louder rear channels is an
undiserable effect.
SBD suffers from moderate distortion during PYITE, Ghost and
probably other spots. As a commentary note, this is not one
of the best SBD recordings. Not bad, not great. I would
give this B/B+ grade, for what that is worth.
02.294 missing on the SBD (cassette flip) btwn Maze and Dirt.
The FOB was trimmed 02.294 btwn 44:13.308 - 44:15.602 to
match. The result is smooth and most likely undetectable.
D2T5 The cassette flip on set two was reported as having
overlapping material. This was not the case. The joining
together or splicing out the cassette flip did result in an
inaudiable splice but material was definately missing. This
made for a bear of a project to synch to the FOB. Regardless,
the result is smooth and most likely undetectable.
D2T6 During the crowd cheer between the last song and the
encore you will hear commentary that "Mike Stanley is on the
stage". This is not referring to any special guest. We ran
several FOB's this tour and the aspect of actually becoming a
human mic stand night after night turned into the nickname
"Mike Stanley".
---------------------------------------------------------
More On DTS
Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel
sound, like DTS and Dolby Digital. While the Audio-CD
standard (Red Book) hasn't changed to accommodate these
new sound formats, it is still possible to go around the
specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a
regular Audio-CD. To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect
your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial)
to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure
that your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio CD, so the
first time you're trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you
must do a test to determine if it can. Begin with the
volume very low, start the disc and raise the volume
gradually. NEVER listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the
analog audio outputs of your CD/DVD player.
Burning Instructions
Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any
normal Audio-CD from .shn files.

No normalization was done.
There was only room for about a 10% increase without clipping;
you could probably go up to 150% or so if you clip the peaks.
I figured for this show, since the levels were pretty good,
I'd leave it alone and let everyone have an unadulterated source.
