Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Japan for the first time since 2019 on Wednesday. The first of four concerts at the Tokyo Dome saw the band featuring songs from Part I of their 2022 four-part album, I Am The Moon.
TTB kicked off the concert with a complete performance of I Am the Moon I: Crescent beginning with guitarist Susan Tedeschi leading the band through “Hear My Dear” before vocalist Mike Mattison sang lead on his “Fall In.” Susan stepped back to the mic for I Am The Moon’s title track which boasted a fiery slide guitar solo from Derek Trucks. “Circles ‘Round The Sun” came next ahead of Trucks’ instrumental masterpiece “Pasaquan” featuring drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eddy, bassist Brandon Boone and keyboardist Gabe Dixon. Derek led the five-piece through a nearly 20-minute “Pasaquan” in Tokyo.
After the title track to Tedeschi’s 1998 solo album, Just Won’t Burn, and “Part Of Me” off TTB’s 2013 LP, Made Up Mind, the band got into cover material including Derek and The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues,” Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues” and a 12-minute rendering of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Gilded Splinters. The main set also saw the second performance of Derek Trucks Band’s “Swamp Raga” since 2020, as per SetlistFM stats, after the band brough the DTB song back at their recent Garden Party concert in Boston. Followed by the classic “Midnight In Harlem.” TTB closed out the set with Jeff Beck’s “I Want More”/”Beck’s Bolero.” The band performed I Am the Moon IV: Farewell’s “Soul Sweet Song” to kick off the encore. Tedeschi Trucks Band wrapped night one with “Made Up Mind.”
