CommentMotley Crue is back to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota for their final tour. Again.
With them are Alice Cooper and a slew of excited and nostalgic Crue fans, eager for another show. This is my third time seeing their “final” show (twice last year in Des Moines and St. Paul) and is by far my favorite. The show has a better feel all around with a more positive energy from the bands, as well as the rest of the crowd.
Regardless of his age, Alice Cooper still puts on a hell of a show. Complete with monsters, beheadings, ongoing theatrics, and a set packed with hits, it’s easy to see why Motley Crue would want him on their tour. One thing I have always liked about Alice Cooper is how controversial he was back in his early era. The beheading has been in all of the shows I have seen and although it isn’t nearly as terrifying as it once was, he was once considered one of the more controversial characters of rock and roll. His set includes such hits as “School’s Out”, “Poison”, “I’m Eighteen”, and many more. “Feed My Frankenstein” features a ten foot monster staggering around the stage, a staple of his shows, while his beheading has always been a crowd pleaser.
Motley Crue opens their set with “Girls, Girls, Girls” and continue the set with a barrage of hits, dancing girls, fire, and the traditional Motley Crue setup. Although there is not a whole lot that is different about this tour than the other final tour from 2014, it is still a great time. A guy beside us had actually never seen them before, so I can only imagine how much fun he was having at the show. We were on Mick Mars’ side of the stage, who I have always found to be good during shows, regardless of his lack of stage antics. He’s a great guitar player. Nikki dons skeletal facial makeup for the first few songs, only to wipe it off later, while running across the stage all night. Although the show is full of greatest hits, there are a few new(er) songs (“Motherfucker of the Year” and “Saints of Los Angeles”), as well as a fantastic cover of Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the UK”, a song that consists of roadies dressed in orange suits spraying the front rows in water.
Vince Neil is Vince Neil. Anyone who has seen him in the last few years knows what they are in for, so it’s not as if it’s a surprise when the audience sings the majority of his vocals. He’s been doing that for a long time. Still, it’s unfortunate that for their last tour, his voice couldn’t have been utilized a bit more. Tommy Lee’s drum solo is amazing. His solo’s are always fun and this took it to another level, lifting him to the top of the Xcel and running the drum kit across the ceiling while spinning him upside down. It’s awesome because, let’s face it, unless you are a drummer or are listening to something absolutely mind blowing, drum solos are boring. They are one of the times during shows when everyone either runs to get beer or go to the bathroom. That’s never the case when Tommy Lee is drumming.
The show ends with the band taking the secondary stage to close out with “Home Sweet Home”. This song had both good and bad points to it that night, as far as I was concerned. The negative being Vince’s voice. It was a major letdown, as the song the is one of the best known “Home Sweet Home” power ballads of all time. Having the follow up to Tommy Lee’s infamous piano playing be Vince simply destroying the vocals was sad. However, I found something about this song to be very positive and fitting for this tour. We turned from the main stage to watch the secondary stage, but I turned to look behind us and saw that they were playing the video on the large screens. It was then that I realized what a fitting metaphor this song was if this did indeed turn out to be their true final tour. The lyrics, “I’m on my way, just set me free”, really seemed to sum up their entire life touring, and now the new lives they will be leading outside of Motley Crue.

CommentBritish goth rock legends the Cure will return to the Twin Cities for the first time in 20 years when they headline St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center on June 7.
The Cure emerged in 1978 with a tense, post-punk sound that later expanded into goth and psychedelic rock, off-kilter pop and even dance music. The band’s first five albums established the Cure as underground cult heroes and set the stage for their commercial breakthrough with 1985’s “The Head on the Door.”
Thanks to heavy MTV airplay and lead singer Robert Smith’s memorable look, the Cure sold more than 5 million albums over the next decade, including the double-platinum 1989 release, “Disintegration.” The Cure last played a local show at the Target Center in July 1996 on a tour promoting that year’s “Wild Mood Swings.”
In the time since, the Cure has slowed down their studio output and focused on touring. In the past two decades, they have released three albums, the most recent of which was 2008’s “4:13 Dream.” The current tour promises to include “37 years of Cure songs, mixing hits, rarities, favorites and as yet unreleased tracks in a brand new stage production.”
The current Cure lineup features Smith and longtime bassist Simon Gallup joined by Roger O’Donnell on keyboards, Jason Cooper on drums and former David Bowie collaborator Reeves Gabrels on guitar.

Who are they? The Who rocks with an orchestra in St. Paul
It wasn't a bad idea, but the great British band lacked power and volume in its Xcel Energy Center show.Imagine a Who concert that’s not loud enough.
No, you don’t need to adjust your bifocals. And I don’t need a hearing aid.
It was a combination of Roger Daltrey’s aging voice being thin and Pete Townshend’s glorious guitars being lost amid a full orchestra on Friday night at Xcel Energy Center. “Tommy,” we could not hear you. At least, not enough to believe that the first half-hour of the concert — six tunes from “Tommy” — was a mini-version of the 50-year-old rock opera that fans of classic rock know and love.
We got the grandeur and certainly the rhythmic propulsion but not the electrifying power of the Who, one of England’s greatest contributions to the pantheon of rock.
Thankfully, the Who — or more precisely the Two, Daltrey, in a black T-shirt, and Townshend, in a white T-shirt, are the only original members left — had the guitar hero. At 74, he remains passionate, intense and spirited — and humorous if sarcastic.
He joked about how, after the anarchy of opening act Reignwolf, a sludgy Seattle power trio, the Who would provide “discipline and order.”In a more serious moment, Townshend pointed out that when the Who last performed in the Twin Cities in 2016, Prince had just died. On that tour, Townshend was staying in a local hotel that had paintings of Prince on the wall. He said he’s in the same room this time but somehow the paintings “look more peaceful.”
Beyond being a charming emcee, Townshend was a windmill wizard on guitar, full of punk fury, roaring power chords and galvanizing drive. And he had a forceful gruffness and appealing theatricality on occasional lead vocals, notably on 1982’s “Eminence Front.”
That compensated for the 75-year-old Daltrey’s vocal shortcomings, including his lack of control on the 1975 deep track “Imagine a Man” and 1971’s smash “Behind Blue Eyes.” The latter came midshow after the 40-some symphony musicians were given a break.
Curiously, during the non-orchestra segment, Daltrey teamed with just Townshend’s acoustic guitar for a stripped-down treatment of the rock anthem “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” known for its multitracked electric guitars and whirring synthesizers. It was hard to tell if the 12,000 fans were cheering for the performance or the song itself.

It was hard to tell if the 12,000 fans were cheering for the performance or the song itself.
The Who joined together again with the orchestra and suddenly things got better, starting on “Join Together,” a poppy rally cry. Daltrey’s voice had a little more oomph, though honestly he hasn’t been in great voice in a Twin Cities concert since 1994 at the Minnesota State Fair when he did his first tour with an orchestra, sans Townshend.
A 2015 Townshend political commentary piece — introduced as “Ball and Chain” but previously called “Big Cigars” and “Guantanamo” — was the perfect prelude Friday to several selections from 1973’s “Quadrophenia,” the Who’s other famous rock opera.
Without being drowned out by the orchestra, the furious drumming of Zak Starkey — who has toured with the Who since 1996 (founding drummer Keith Moon died in 1978) — propelled “The Real Me,” and Townshend’s spiky, soulful and speedy guitar work transformed “5:15” into one of the highlights of the 130-minute performance.Emotions peaked on the majestic “Love, Reign O’er Me” and the closing “Baba O’Riley,” an overpowering wedding of power chords, orchestral heft and social commentary.
Too bad that the first half of the concert was such a rocky — or actually unrocky — marriage.
