12/10/69 Thelma Theater cdr 2 a Thelma Theater, Los Angeles, December 10, 11 & 12, 1969 The Complete Tapes On Eight CDs. Copies from the soundboard reels of these shows have circulated since the '70s, sometimes mislabled "Kaleidoscope Theater, LA," often with dates and sequences mixed up, usually in badly degraded sound quality. This set assembles complete copies of the 11th and the 12th in the best quality circulating. Except for the middle portion of the 11th, sound is excellent throughout; this inferior segment is listenable while leaving definite room for improvement if an upgrade shows up; we haven't been able to find one & don't want to delay further. Many people gave help on the way to creating this set of CDs. Dave Greenberg did the final masters. Jack Warner was instrumental in providing the difficult composite for the 2nd disc of 12/11/69, which was first mastered by Scott Clugston. RB, KW, JN and HB also provided important assistance. Jim Powell instigated the project and writes these notes. Most of what we have from this date comes from a MSR > D containing nearly all of one set. The other tape, containing That's It For The Other One > Cosmic Charlie#, most often circulates labeled "12/10/69," as the second half of a cassette side, following the 12/11/69 Dark Star. 07/14/70 Euphoria Ballroom cdr 1 a- BAND Grateful Dead VENUE Euphoria Ballroom CITY San Rafael STATE CA DATE 07/14/70 SET1 [53:10 +] Don't Ease Me In [2:59] ; [0:05] % Friend Of The Devil [3:28] ; [2:00] ; Dire Wolf [3:56] ; [0:10] % [3:32 Intro etc.] ; Dark Hollow [3:02] ; [0:04] % Candyman [#4:42] % [0:08] ; Black Peter [6:38] % [0:04] ; How Long Blues [3:07] ; [0:12] % [0:07] ; Deep Elem Blues [3:17] % [0:04] % Cumberland Blues [5:30] % New Speedway Boogie [9:04] SET 1 is acoustic Dead, and could well be the complete set. David Crosby plays 12-string guitar on Cumberland and New Speedway, and Jerry plays electric on these tunes. The best tapes of this set supplement the vault SBD of the acoustic set by patching in a truly excellent AUD which supplies Don't Ease, Cumberland and New Speedway. The AUD Don't Ease is patched in before Friend Of The Devil. After the SBD Deep Elem there is a splice, followed by 0:04 from the beginning of a SBD version of New Speedway, followed by another splice, followed by the AUD Cumberland, another splice and then the AUD New Speedway. Besides these patches there is no other sign of this AUD tape in circulation. The AUD master is certainly good enough to be Bear's.

07/19/74 Selland Arena cdr 3 a+ A tape-flip cut in Row Jimmy is patched from the AUD, and another in Playing In The Band. The Seastones patched in from AUD in previously circulating copies has been upgraded to the 2nd gen AUD source, and the Saturday Night has been added from the AUD source.
09/11/74 Alexandra Palace cdr 4 a Grateful Dead Alexandra Palace, London Wednesday September 11, 1974 complete on 4 CDs Candelario Matrix MSR > D > CD except first 15:22 of Seastones (on Disc #2): AUD end of Sunshine Daydream and encore: AUD This is the Candelario matrix SBD reel recording. From 2:10 to 3:00 of Scarlet Begonias the mix gets strange while Kid adjusts his levels. We have left this passage intact (there is another version in circulation where it is patched with AUD). We have patched in from an AUD master the first 15:22 of Seastones, the tail end of Sunshine Daydream, and US Blues, all missing on the circulating MSR > D. Naturally this set supplements and does not supplant the portions of this show released as parts of Dick's Picks #7, but until GDM releases the show complete, this will do the trick nicely. Dave Greenberg did the final mastering of these discs. We don't know who mastered the patch of SSDD and US Blues; we extracted this portion from a CD of the MSR > D containing Eyes through the end of the show, with this patch already in place, and nicely done -- our compliments to whoever mastered it. HB also provided important assistance. This project was instigated and these notes written by Jim Powell Disc #1 59:55 First Set, Part 1 Scarlet Begonias Mexicali Blues Brown Eyed Women Beat It On Down The Line Sugaree Jack Straw Row Jimmy Me And Bobby McGee Tennessee Jed ; Disc #2 49:31 First Set, Part 2 Big River It Must Have Been The Roses Playing In The Band Second Set, Part 1 Seastones > Disc #3 70:08 > Seastones > space jam > Eyes Of The World > space jam > Wharf Rat > space Disc #4 35:54 Third Set Around And Around Ship Of Fools Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Sugar Magnolia Encore U.S. Blues
09/14/74 Olympiahalle cdr 3 see Jim Powell: "This audience tape was mastered by Gerhard Schinzel from mid-floor using a Philips mic and a Telefunken reel deck. The reel masters were transferred to CD by Uli Teute. The beginning of the reel containing Weather Report Suite is now damaged and unplayable. This portion -- the first 1:20 or so of WRS -- is supplied from a safety cassette (MAR > C > CD). Uli Teute did this patch. "Dave Greenberg says that this master has "NO low end". That isn't really true, however. With an equalizer or the Loudness button on your amp or pre-amp or both, Phil can be made quite decently audible. Other than that, this is quite a decent AUD master, which is a good thing since it seems to be the only one in existance and certainly the only tape circulating."
