Notes from phish.net:
Live taping has been going since the band's second show, 11/3/83. Shelly Culbertson said of the first gig, "Nope, that show was not recorded. However, their next show - 11/3/83, basement of Slade Hall, UVM - was; I think it was taped on a boom box with condenser mics and the tape is entirely over-saturated and distorted. The tape was labeled with felt tip on masking tape and appears to have resided on someone's car floor or dashboard for a few years. No, copies of this tape are not available - but I can try to post the setlist some day, if I ever figure it out. ;-)" |

Notes:
*There were 'cuts' between several of the tracks, probably someone's crowd noise edits and/or tape flips. I cross-faded them best I could. There is one in the jam on Harry Hood, cross faded it too, doesn't sound too bad. There are a few points where one channel gets choppy. The worst was at the end of Halley's Comet where I mixed it to mono for a short section, it was that bad. Finally, to normalize I boosted the first set 2.5 db, and the second set 4.5 db. |

Some skips in Possum.
Notes and Fixes using SF4.5:
-Tape flip between t7 and t8
-The original tracks were noticeably flat and slow. To compensate for
the faulty analog generations/transfers, I increased the pitch by 190 cents
(almost one step) along with anti-alias filtering to decrease
distortion during software resampling.
-Applied a paragraphic EQ hiss filter to reduce hiss above 8 kHz by 20 dB.
-Normalized disc to 98%.
-Retracked disc so that each song begins at the start of the track.
-As with all shows I've done, I may have missed some things (ie, pops, clicks, etc).
If so, please let me know so that I can fix them up asap.

Notes:
-HPB lists Fuck Your Face after Cities (d1t09) so the splice after Cities
probably cut out this song for some reason. :-(
-There are splices at the following positions, all of which occur between songs.
I'm not sure why there are so many of them. Either the person who did the DAT
master didn't want so much space between songs or there is something else missing.
d1t06 2:04, d1t07 4:04, d1t09 5:21
d2t01 0:01, d2t07 0:00.8, d2t09 8:17, d2t12 0:00.6
d3t03 4:49, d3t04 5:17
-In d1t10 there was a high pitched oscillating sound from 0:12-0:16,
d2t02 from 1:43-1:46, and d2t09 3:13-3:13 which I could not remove without
disrupting the quality of the recording. This may be feedback...?
-I noticed throughout the tracks that the L and R waves were exactly identical
with the exception of the R channel having lower levels than the left.
-Tape flips:
between d2t02-d2t03 (fade in...fade out)
-There is some light warbling in d2t06 at 2:42.
Fixes:
-There were a few errors on the original DAT which I edited out.
They occured:
d1t01 1:48 2 DOs
d1t08 6:19 1 DO
d1t09 4:17 3 <0.001s bursts in R channel which were replaced with L channel
d1t09 4:46 2 <0.001s bursts in R channel which were replaced with L channel
d1t10 0:15 1 DO
d2t03 3:57 2 DOs - smoothed out static before DOs
d2t07 0:02 1 DO |

This show is dated 1-27-1988 in the Phish Companion
so I elected to seed it using this date.
SOURCE:SBD>CASS(0)>DAT
DAT>SHN:Tascam DA-20>COAX>WAV>COOL EDIT>CDWAV>SHN
Via MKW.These SHN files are seekable in your SHNamp.
I have included both shn and wav md5s.
This show has been on a journey through the Cool Edit.
Using the Noise Reduction Feature, I have removed
2/3 of the hiss from this copy. There is still
a little bit of hiss, but it comes and goes in waves
instead of a constant annoyance. Before I did this,
the hiss was over the music, now it is behind it.
The music was left completely unaltered in this process.
When the show was originally recorded, the analog
taper kept reseting their levels louder and louder
to the point where there is some vibration. No
real distortion, just some annoying vibration so
don't crank these full throddle.I tried various
tools to try and fix it.I could not get it to my
liking so I chose to leave it alone.
About 2 minutes of Lizards is missing.
It is a very strange time for an analog flip,
but if this taper used 2 tapes for a 3 set show,
the timing matches up.
This is a fabulous show.If I had to give it a grade
for quality...
If it was recorded after 1993 it would be a "C".
Since it was recorded in 1988 and I was able to remove
most of the hiss, I give it an "A--".

Notes:
-I'm guessing mic location was next to soundboard since you can hear
Paul talking to Trey who wanted monitor levels adjusted between songs
-Some minor distortion at certain peaks that were previously clipped
-d1t02 4:40 minute channel drop, 7:35 minor skip
-d2t02 2:09,3:49 volume drop, 5:11-5:14 muffled sound
Fixes:
-Clipping occurred in all tracks (98% in left channel):
If clipping was minimal, I used SF4.5 pencil tool to fix wave. However,
if the clipping was larger, I applied dynamic compression to
milli-second clip maintaining the same RMS power.
-d1t03 2:37.330-2:38.088 left channel dropout fixed by applying right channel
-d1t06 3:39, 3:58 removed crackles - something hits the mics
-To reduce distortion of previously clipped peaks in left channel, the SF4.5
channel converter converted a new left channel comprised of 90% left and 10% right. |

Notes:
-This is definitely an audience recording judging by the R/L levels and
the "large" amount of crowd noise. You are able to hear conversations at
certain points. This, however, does not detract from the show since this
is an excellent recording. The hiss level is relatively low, probably no
more than two analog generations.
-Splice between d1t06 and d1t07 (start of d1t07 cut), d1t10 4:58,
between d2t01 and d2t02, d2t03 and d2t04, d2t04 and d2t05, d2t05 and d2t06
-Tape flip

d2t05 8:55 (46:17)
-Diginoise in d1t10 0:08.150-0:08.974 (0.824 sec)
-d1t12 (Bowie) fades out
Fixes:
-Pitch shift of -35 cents applied in Soundforge 4.5 to compensate for
high pitch due to analog generations.
-Removed skip in d1t07 1:05.998-1:07.228 (1.230 sec)
-Removed skip in d2t01 0:37.422-0:38.888 (1.446 sec)

Notes:
-The HPB says Set 2 ends with the Sky Jam (after the cut), but after Fire,
Fish? says, "We're going to take a break...". So, I believe, the set ends
after Fire and have noted that in the file.
-Few tracks cut at beginning or end due to analog tape flips, except for
the cut at the end of d3t06.
-Tape flips
d1t07 7:51 (45:16)
d2t03 8:13 (45:45)
d3t02 3:05 (49:26)
d4t01 13:23 (42:45)
-Diginoise/Static
d2t08 4:38-4:43, 4:46-4:47
d3t02 2:26-2:28 (spotty)
d3t05 5:37-6:00
Will be looking for clean tracks and will replace these as soon as I can
track them down.
Fixes:
-Removed 5 dropouts in d1t10 5:59-6:03 (slight missed beats due to dropouts)
-Replaced left channel diginoise in d4t01 1:49 (0.028s) with clean right channel |

Notes: The dat during the second set was quite cluttered with
digi-clicks. I had to sacrifice some of the sound quality
by using SonicFoundry's Click and Crackle Filter with
a sensitivity of 12. I then ran a soft-knee compression
to recover decent levels. This also helped make percistent
clicks less noticable. Enjoy.

"Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate
recording board at the shows. They are some of the highest quality
Phish tapes in existence: 4/22/90, 10/30/90, 10/31/90, 11/2/90,
11/3/90, 11/4/90, 3/13/91, 3/15/91, 3/16/91, 3/17/91, 3/22/91,
3/23/91, 4/5/92.
Except for the 4/5/92 tape, they have all been fairly widely circulated.
They were done on a large recording console (not EQ) and mixed completely
separately from the board mix, rumoredly done in a truck outside the venue.
The engineer used 2 audience mics to mix in crowd/hall ambience (on most of them).
See also, PA info."
Quoted from: http://www.phish.net/PhishFAQ/tquality.html
Info From Kevin Shapiro: "11/3/90 and the other tapes of the era (10/30-11/4)
were all done by Mike Grace through a separate 16 track mixer and ran direct to 2
track DAT. He basically used the same setup in Spring 1991 too."
Mastered by Mike Grace, DATs for this transfer provided by Mikey Perrott. Thanks Mikey!

* These tunes had glitches on the original DAT that I fixed using my SBD3 analog. The affected portions are all of track 1 (which didn't exist on the DAT), the first 55 seconds of track 2, and a small portion of the beginning of track 8.

this is definitely a sbd recording. i had to edit out tapeflips at around 47 minutes into each set, therefor proving to me it is a sbd. it was labeled to me as only 1 cass gen, and the only really irritating analog hiss is between songs, and when it is really quiet, other than that this recording sounds really sweet!
this is one of those classic great second sets where you can tell that the band could have cared less if there was an audience, they were just haveing a hell of a good time entertaining themselves. a must have in my opinion!!!

**this is a beauty!**
notes: This is another in a series of mostly uncirculated (as of 5/00) digital boards I will pump out in the near future. Sweet Adeline comes across as silence because it was not mic'ed, so I left it out. There is a 1/2 drop in the begining of Tela, and some sort of tiny skip shortly into Suzie. Please email me with any comments/concerns.
Thanks and enjoy!

Notes: It was a VERY rainy show and in order avoid the many bad points
of running equipment in the rain and the fact that there were 2 large
"repeater" speakers on the back of the sound board the mics were moved
at last minute before the start of 1st set. The mics were moved to
either side of the back of the sound board platform underneath the tent
that Paul and Chris were using for the sound boards. The mics were then
placed approx 1.5' away from each speaker under the protection of the
tent. Good part: the sound of the tape is close to sound board quality.
Bad part: it took longer than expected to move the mics and equipment
which had all ready been setup, therefore the first attempt to start
Llama was missed on the DAT but fortunately due to rain Trey stopped
the song then restarted minutes later. The DAT started during this
short break. Overall BY FAR the best recording made that day and one
of the best I've ever made with the exception of the late start. There
was a person taping from about 13th row center running Nak 300s with
plastic bags over them that has the first attempt at Llama but he is one
of the only ones who did get it as most of the tapers by the sound board
patched out of me once I was setup due to the much higher sound quality.
Peace,
Taper Tom

This is the first time i've heard this, but thousands have ask me
about it over the years. To me it captures the true spirit of Phish.
It happened as we were walking to the bus to leave the venue. somebody
said play us one and we said sure and the roadies got our stuff. i was
already holding my banjo which probably started the whole thing. I was
on tour with them to teach them bluegrass and had been playing with
them on stage some at night. Hoist was being released at the time and
i actually played with them on that material at night as well as the
bgrass set. though they really didn't know bgrass and had just been
playing for a short while, this truly captured the spirit of the music
because of their openess, talent, and what i call that "wonderful
phish curiosity". i was touched to hear this because when you boil it
all down this is what it's all about. the people just want to hear the
music and truly i didn't wanna leave. you can hear the joy. i lead the
jam as phish had never really done that before. when we got on the bus
they were so happy that we did it and i think they felt, maybe for the
first time, the true spirit of what bgrass and folk music is all about.
the jam turned out to be the most important thing that i taught them.
thanks for sharing it. i am touched.
Truly,
"rev" Jeff Mosier

Detailed info: This FOB recording was done on a 5 foot stand in the 18th row.
Minor Edits: All edits done in SF 5.0 after resampling to 44.1kHz, prior to tracking.
Fades in/out beg/end of sets--5 sec for sets I and III, 3 sec for set II
Nasty digital sounding noise on master in between Peaches and Divided
removed/patched with the patch source (see above for source/conversion info).
This was done by overlapping the sources pre/post glitch and crossfading to
make the patch seamless: 8.080 sec duration in on both sides of the patch,
with the source going from -infdb to 0db and the destination going from
0db to -infdb and vice versa on the other end of the patch (i.e. SF defaults).
The patch was also normalized to -8.0db. (-39.81%) to ensure dynamic continuity.
Beginning of set III levels were not close to even (first 2min), hence the
following fix was applied: Normalized LC to -8.0db (39.81%) from 0 ->
00:02:02.136, paste in first 1:48.576 of it, channel swap crossfade on
1:48.576 -> 1:58.607(midpt) -> 2:08.638 (at 50%, 10.31s on ea side, 0.0db) to
make the transition fairly seamless. (all times = a-time, not track time)
Tapers: Eliot Byron (main source), Jeff Jordan (patch)

Slight fading during Theme. More than likely from the SBD
Not sure what happened to Amazing Grace. There was a drop after Weekapaug. The drop was also on the master DAT.
Definitely a killer show, and worth having for the face it's a nice, nice soundboard.

I would like to thank Morgan Bell for the FM Slave source. Without him,
this seed wouldn't have been possible. All editing and tracking was
performed with WaveLab 3.0.
EDITING: The FM Slave was passed through these following devices; DC
Remover, and DeNoiser. This was to remove most of the FM noise without
disturbing the high-end freq's. The rest of the show was tracked with
WaveLab and had the following done; DC Remover. All tracks reside on a
sector boundary. This was throughly checked and rechecked numorus times
before SHN compression. Enjoy!

The Great Went (Day One). *Starts with the theme and Jimmy story, picking up where the song aborted last year at the end of the Clifford Ball
(08-17-96). **With theme from "The Odd Couple" tease/jam. #With a kind of a twisted "Seven Dwarves" sort of jam. ^Major fireworks are let off
behind the stage during the song, culminating in a great finale display as Funky Bitch kicks in.
08-17-97 Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, ME
1: The Wedge, Beauty of My Dreams, Dogs Stole Things, Vultures, Water in the Sky-> Maze, Bouncing Around the Room-> Tweezer*-> Taste, Carolina (1:17)

The Great Went (Day Two). *With a "Cities" jam. **The band members take turns painting large designs at the side of the stage. Then, the crowd
"carries" the pieces of this design to the side of the venue where it is assembled and hoisted for everyone to see onto a tower. This wood tower is tall and
covered in painted plywood and has been built during the two shows. As "Harry Hood" goes into its jam, Trey asks Chris to turn the lights off, and the
band jams while the front section has a gigantic Glow Stick War. Trey tells the crowd at the end of the jamto "go and get more of those, because that
was cool." #No Muel Duel. ^The entire art tower was burned to the ground.

Yet another installment on the PCP Fall 97 project, 11/16/97 represents
my first attempt at making shn files or md5 sums. The discs are flawless
as far as my ears can tell, except for some reason the track split
between Scent of a Mule and Poor heart actually comes in at the end of
the "mule duel". Scent finishes out and Poor Heart is complete. As my
editing skills (and editing software) are lacking, I decided to let
everyone deal with this how they want to. I have just left it the way it
is. Make sure to email me at the address above if you find anything that
isn't kosher. I have listened to both discs
(made from unshortening the shn files I created) and everything seems
ok, md5's as well check out. Enjoy the show.

*Before they started the set, the crowd chanted the beginning of "Destiny
Unbound" (in hopes that the band would play it). Trey acknowledged
the chant by saying that he couldn't hear what was being sung; that
it sounded like some kind of "death chant"; and asked if this was
the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice. He then
asked for a volunteer, which was pretty funny. No "Destiny Unbound" was
played or even teased.

Sorry about disc2, but the other option was to cut Bowie between the intro
and the hook, and then cut the true jam out of Jim to Starnge Design. Hood
picks up without being jammed into, and for all cuts the music is eactly
split, no fades, for simple reconstruction to different tracking, if you prefer.
Two notes of interest, a spike in The Sloth was slightly dampened (-2dB) so
the entire set was better normalized (both sets normalized). I think this
makes our copy slightly superior to the original DAT. Secondly, the audience
was interrupted between the end of 2 to the E, so I used a fade in/out.

Apogee AD1000.DAT at 48khz> Event Gina S/PDIF digital I/O >
Cool Edit Pro (48>44.1) high quality setting
No normalization was done.
There was only room for about a 10% increase without clipping;
you could probably go up to 150% or so if you clip the peaks.
I figured for this show, sincethe levels were pretty good,
I'd leave it alone and let everyone have an unadulterated source.

There is a *slight* burst of diginoise at 14:14 in d1t07 (Halley's).
I recommend using an 80-minute disc for disc 1 so Coil can be on the same disc
as Halley's. There isn't a segue between the songs, but Coil starts up *right*
after Halley's. I didn't name the files this way though, since most people use
74-minute discs.

NOTE:

I'd prefer that the opening crowd noises are not removed,
but I could honestly care less. I feel it helps recreate
the experience. Also, if this source is converted to any
other format(ie- .MP3, .RA,...), please include this file
and add any changes to the source.
Thanx & Enjoy!
