# (June '04) - SoundForge used to adjust imaging, eq, and compress. Static/resonance from the PA was present in set one and gets really bad at 8:26 of crickets, and I had to do a rather severe EQ job to mitigate the annoyance [partially at least, I think it is better than it was prior to the adjustment; I could not figure out any other way to help it otherwise] so that is what you hear at that point. Set 2 is normal. This show sounds nice overall. |

There's tape hiss throughout that originates from the masters.
From the Pharmer's Almanac Vol. 6:
"Recorded in the summer of 1990 at Wendell Studios in Boston, MA. The band entered the studio soon after
the June 16, 1990 Townshend Family Park show, but elected not to release any of the recorded material.
Tapes of the sessions circulate lightly among fansl the first tape is more difficult to track down than
the second."

Notes
The first Tweezer Reprise?
The taper ran two D5s from two different mic sources for this night and 9/21/90. The mics both nights were Nak 300s and Sony ECM-MS5s. For 9/20/90, the sources were not labeled on the tapes or tape cover as to which mics were used for each source. Source information was determined by comparison with the 2 labelled sources for 9/21/90.
NO tracking/editing/alterations performed before archiving to 24-bit FLAC (except to trim silence from the ends).

Set 2 was the "musical costume", the album "Remain in Light" by Talking Heads. Entire set with Dave Grippo (saxophone), Gary Gazaway (trombone) and Karl Perazzo (percussionist from Santana).
The video of the second set contains multiple cuts totally around 15 minutes worth of time.
All cuts have been replaced with slideshows containing over 115 of the best pics from phishpics.net.
I would like to thank all the photographers, your photos are a wonderful addition to this set.
At the beginning of each cut, there is a message declaring how long the break is,
and if the break is longer than 45 seconds, there is a hidden chapter inserted where the video returns,
so you can just skip over the longer slideshows if you like.

*For Elvis Week.
#This segment was dominated by the stage presence of Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Colonel Forbin doesn't meet Icculus this time but rather finds "Ken Uncle Sam Bozo Easy Kesey". At this time Kesey, dressed as Uncle Sam, appears on the stage and
announces that the Bozos have been missing for two years but are on Phish tour now. He calls one by one the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and Frankenstein (Phish breaks into "Frankenstein") to help him find the Bozos, which soon appear as four white things in costume.
After singing about the Bozos which are doing interpretive dance, the Pranksters all leave the stage after Kesey hears the "Bozo Mockingbird". Trey comments that this is what happens "after you do too much acid 30 years later..." Phish had been playing
background music (including McGrupp and Ghost teases) which had developed by this point into a deep funk jam. Trey announces that "we are supposed to start 'Famous Mockingbird', but the funk is too deep." The band continues the funk jam and eventually segues
into "Camel Walk." |

*Before they started the set, the crowd chanted the beginning of "Destiny Unbound" (in hopes that the band would play it). Trey acknowledged the chant by saying that
he couldn't hear what was being sung; that it sounded like some kind of "death chant" and asked if this was the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice. No "Destiny Unbound" was played or teased.

AMG REVIEW: 02/17/2005 4:37 AM, AMG
Live Phish, Vol. 08 -- recorded between 1998's "Story of the Ghost" and 2000's
"Farmhouse" -- documents some of Phish's most mature and focused improvisation, as well as their dynamics. Almost entirely gone is the band's early sense of humor. In its place comes a peaceable, occasionally unremarkable, dignity. In three separate jams, almost methodically, the band moves from a big-energy song
into an evolved improvisation before bringing the music down gently into a quiet ballad. In the first set, a long "Chalk Dust Torture" wends its way into "Roggae." In the second set, the longtime jam showcase "Tweezer" segues into the previously unreleased "Mountains in the Mist." Later, "Birds of a Feather" melts
into a cover of Los Lobos' "When the Circus Comes." The center around which this music rotates is bassist Mike Gordon, who -- beginning around the time the live "Slip, Stich, and Pass" was recorded, in 1997 -- contributed gorgeous, cleanly defined upper-register bass lines. These lines give the band a center to organize around. The band had worked hard at playing ballads for several years, starting in 1996 (documented on "Live Phish, Vol. 12" and "Billy Breathes"), and this performance shows the fruits of their labors. Unfortunately, the band doesn't fare as well on the mid-tempo numbers. The first set features a plodding cover of jazz organist Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack," as well as an uninspired version of their own "Water in the Sky." The band's interests are
clearly shown as they tackle "Fluffhead," one of guitarist Trey Anastasio's earliest and toughest compositions. The band moves through the sections with some ease, and even brings the song to a rousing finale, but does so without the exuberance evident in their earlier renditions of the tune (such as on "Live Phish, Vol. 09" and "Live Phish, Vol. 10").
