Notes:
First Week Rehersals mix tape.
EV changed the track list to accomodate a different length cassette (. The versions recorded onto this particular tape might be re-mixed from the original 10/13/90 master. "Daddy (Could Swear, I Declare)" is most likely a filler track taken from a previous Vedder session.
Info from Given To Wail
For some reason on the song, "Goat" it stops abruptly at 1:28; I don't know if I have a incomplete track or that's how it was on the original tape. |

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
New Year's Eve and three great bands! Ed comments, "If I wasn't in this band, I would still make sure I was here tonight." Ed sings part of Fugazi's 'Waiting Room' as an intro to 'Even Flow.' A driven performance, with a particularly intense version of 'Alive.' Flea of RHCP assists with vocals during 'Leash.' The 'Teen Spirit' teaser (actually the longest teaser I've heard) is followed by Stone's quip, "Just remember, we played it first." Ed performs one of his finest stage dives, repeating it later during the 'Yurtle the Turtle' encore with the Chili Peppers.

(^) = Jason Mueller (Ed's brother) jumps onstage and starts jamming with the band.
Recording Notes:
This is the complete Den Haag show (total show time: 87:42). There are some bumps @ 9:57 of IGaF, where it sounds like someone dropped a microphone on stage or something. The filler included is an acoustic session at a French Virgin Records music store, played less than a month before the Den Haag show. Some minor imperfections have been edited and the vocals given a little lift.
Den Haag Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed has more words for stage divers: "Just a couple of words. In my whole life, I never wanted to be a policeman or anything of authority. But in fact, all my life I've been in a crowd like this, and whenever I was back there and people throw up onto the stage and jumped back off it always looked so cool, but when you are up here, see all these peoples' heads bein' smashed in by boots and stuff, it's really fuckin' ridiculous. Prior to 'Black' Ed notes, "You know, we canceled tomorrow night's show just because I knew I would sing with everything I got tonight ... a very good decision I think." 'Suggestion' is an extremely rousing version, renamed 'Saying No in Den Haag' by Ed. Stone and Mike sing an ear splitting acapulco version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' before 'Porch.' Ed's brother, Jason, jams with the band during a long, lively version of 'I've Got a Feeling' including parts of 'Hunger Strike,' 'Say Hello 2 Heaven' and 'Jane Says' (by Jane's Addiction). Excellent show.
Paris Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Acoustic performance similar to the previous Tower Records appearances.

He notes, "The person the next song is written about is here tonight" before an incredible 'Why Go.' Billy Corgan and D'Arcy from The Smashing Pumpkins join PJ for 'Window Paine' and 'I've Got a Feeling.' Members of U2 were at the show this night and met up with PJ after the show |

Recording Notes:
The bulk of this is sourced from a digital clone of a BBC Transcription Services cd silver, with some parts
patched from a different radio cd silver for Westwood One. On all of the known broadcasted versions,
certain parts of the show in-between songs were consistently cut out (mostly guitar tunings and Ed's speeches
about reproductive rights and taping shows where he is not using "radio-friendly language"). These missing bits
and pieces have been collected as a separate montage on the last track, being sourced from a video. The quality
of the video source differed greatly from the pre-FMs, so it was not feasible to try and patch it into the main
source, but it is included to hear what was cut from the broadcasts. All talking by DJs that were present on the
original broadcasts have been removed.
For the technically curious, this is how the sources were patched together:
0:00.000 - 0:20.000(approx) Westwood One US pre-FM
0:20.000(approx) - 4:05.720 BBC Transcription Services UK pre-FM
4:05.720 - 4:12.950 Westwood One US pre-FM
4:12.950 - 7:24.231 BBC Transcription Services UK pre-FM
7:24.231 - 7:33.186 unknown UK pre-FM>1st gen analog + Westwood One US pre-FM mix (original mixing: ThinAir)
7:33.186 - 51:57.668 BBC Transcription Services UK pre-FM
Artwork Notes (spacedvest):
Really goofy stuff for this one (sorry, this was done years ago). I updated a little of it for this particular release,
but most of it is the same as from what I had done a long time ago. :)
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Amazing version of 'Black.' 'Even Flow' is dedicated to Dee from L7 as she "... hasn't had her period for nearly two
months." Lyrics are modified to "... pillows made of Tampax." Ed encourages the crowd to tape shows. Hopping into the
crowd during 'Porch,' Ed barely makes it back to the stage as security mistakes him for a stagediver.

We are spreading this one this week. To be honest, it probably is my favorite PJ show besides Atlanta 94. My favorite song on this is "Porch", absolutely classic. The tag team action of Fred and Dave cannot be stopped, and Soon did artwork for this years ago, but he now updated the entire package considerably for this release and made it even better.
Show Notes (thanks to fivehorizons):
Ed jokes, "There is a fake in Florida, but this is the real Jeff Ament. If someone comes up to you and says he is Jeff Ament and wants to take your pot or wants to take you to a stripclub, it is probably not him."
In a very rare third encore, 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' is introduced as follows: "See, we live in a place where it ain't so sunny. Have you ever been in Seattle? It's just ... this song has a lot to do with summer and I just want to play it here cause it always feels like summer here."
This is a wonderful show. |

(&) = Mike throws in a guitar snippet of the Rolling Stones' "Angie" right after the song.
(*) = Additional vocals by Doug Pinnick and octabons by Jerry Gaskill, both members of King's X.
(!) = First time played in full. The only version played before was a Not for You/Satan's Bed jam @ Louisville, KY on 3/24/94.
Recording Notes:
This is the best known source of this show, and has been lovingly put together after spending countless hours comparing a multitude of sources for the show. The DJ aftershow is not by any means a super recording, but it has been pieced together from two analog tapes to make it complete, and it has been included because it is interesting and has some great music. During some of Ed's talking you can hear another song playing in the background. This is most likely from "crosstalk" from a nearby radio station on the dial (it seems to only occur during Ed's talking for some reason).
Artwork Notes:
The artwork has been ideally designed by a three-cd "quad case", one of the fat cd cases. This has also been designed to also be really easy to drop the third disc and not use the "top tray", in order to put the show in a standard two-disc jewel case, if so desired. The booklet is made by printing both pages, front and back, and then stapling them together down the middle.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Jeff joins Kings' X, playing bass on the Hendrix cover, 'Manic Depression.' King's X vocalist Doug Pinnick and drummer Jerry Gaskill help out during 'WMA'. Some lyrics from 'Not for You' are thrown in at the end of 'Blood.' Prior to a super 'Sonic Reducer,' Ed starts playing drums and Dave announces, "Ladies and gentlemen, Dave Abbruzzese!" Jeff chimes in, "Otherwise known as 'Four Feet'." Dave then mocks the crowd's earlier chants of "Eddie, Eddie!" by mumbling "Ed" several times into the mic, before returning to the drum set. A bit of 'Satan's Bed' ("torture follows reward") is mixed into 'Rats.' Before 'Porch,' Ed says, "I think you won, but I enjoyed the fight," referring to a large banner handed to him, which reads, "Eddie vs. Atlanta." Meanwhile, the band is jamming to the Kiss song, 'Detroit Rock City.' During the long jam during the middle of this incredible version of 'Porch,' Ed throws his mic stand at a huge replica of the "boy on the cross" figurine (depicted in the Vs. book) hanging in the background. Ed dons a Cincinnati Bengals helmet and the gold bat wings and climbs the lighting rig above the stage. Staying there through most of the jam, he throws down a dummy wearing a similar outfit. The crowd screams, thinking that Ed has fallen, but he reappears, and starts singing again. Jeff kicks the dummy into the crowd where it is ripped to pieces. Ed returns to the stage using only his hands on the rope ladder with his feet dangling. A snippet of Sonic Youth's 'Androgynous Mind' is intermingled in 'Porch' (and the original played during Ed's DJ show later). The lights are turned up after 'Porch' and at least half of the crowd leaves, missing 'Indifference.' This show was broadcast on radio, as well as Ed's 45-minute DJ session from a van after the show. (The original Monkeywrench Radio?).

Kurt's death that day. A very tense and emotional show. Ed remarked, "... we are elevated a little
more than usual, either that or I've gotten taller. I don't think it's a very good thing to elevate
yourself. I think it would be a very dangerous thing... sometimes, whether you like it or not people
elevate you ... whether you like it or not, and it's very easy to fall. So.. uh.. I don't want to be
the messenger, somebody who delivers bad news, you know. Kill the messenger, but I don't think any
of us would be in this room if it weren't for Kurt Cobain ... 1,2,3,4.." Incredible version of 'Even
Flow.' Despite the sadness and misery hanging over this show, the songs were powerful and intense.
By the end of the night the mood changed with the music bringing everyone together and creating
strength. People started leaving after 'Indifference' as the lights went down, and started running
back in when they closed powerfully with 'RITFW," playing like they couldn't stop. |

Recording Notes:
This show is complete and the best known source. The very end of "Jeremy" was cut/faded out on the
original promo cd; this was repaired by patching the last 30 seconds or so from the "Aussie Dynamos"
liberated bootleg.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
This show was broadcast on the Australian radio station, JJJ. Ed remarks: "It's not just us tonight,
we're on the radio. I just thought I'd warn you, you know, if you, if you're s'posed to be at your
friend's house spending the night, you weren't allowed to come, don't get your voice on the radio, we
don't want you to get in trouble. Ah fuck it, get in trouble!" Later he says, "Fine bunch of mutants we
got here We're all mutants up here, too." 'Jeremy' and 'Even Flow' are both sporting a new intros. Ed
notes the full moon: "It's really too bad they couldn't open the roof in this place cuz there's a fuckin'
full moon out there that we're missing ... so if someone's out there listening to us in their car, stick
your head out the window.. at home, go to the windows. Things happen in a full moon, good things, bad
things, things happen." Ed gives his list of N.W. words/phrases. Reference is made to the poor security
the previous night ("... we got the guys from last night the fuck outta here"). Ed acknowledges his wife,
Beth: "She's back home, so it's not as if she's going to hear this on the radio, but it's me and Beth's
129 month anniversary today. And I'm going to sing the first line of this famous New Zealand song. This
is for her. 'I've got you, and that's all I want.' [sings a couple bars of the Split Enz, 'I Got You'].
That's for her. This one's for you." (leading to 'Better Man'). Dave Grohl joins PJ for 'RitFW.'

This source is complete and is almost totally sourced from a digital soundboard (not FM). The dropout in Daughter at 3:38-3:44 is patched from the liberated bootleg "Road Rage" while the cut in Porch at 4:49-6:00 is patched from the liberated bootleg "Malaria" ('Monkeywrench Radio' mono FM).
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
True to their word, PJ returned to Salt Lake City after the previous rain-out and played "twice as long," playing two shows. Being the night after Halloween, the band hits the stage wearing costumes, Ed's being a very large alien head and alien gloves with long fingers. They proceed to toss items into the crowd (the band claiming it's candy corn and cigarettes). Ed comments after 'Tremor Christ:' "I believe we've met before. We're gonna make good on our promise." There's a very sweet improv played before 'Elderly Woman.' Ed's introduces 'Even Flow' as a song they "... learned off an old '50s jukebox." 'Red Mosquito' is a new song. 'Leaving Here' has an interesting intro. Monkeywrench Radio broadcast this show.

This source is not to be confused with the already circulating "[MWFM] + [Nakamichi 700s > Sony TCD-D7] > CDR > SHN"

sources have been mixed fully into both channels.

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons)
====================================
Monkeywrench Radio broadcast this show. The improv after 'Daughter' is a modified 'Young Man Blues' modifying the lyrics to "young girl's blues." 'Brain of J' premieres. Ed comments about how "it's almost like tonight we're playing for you and last night we were playing for your parents." This comment is made because the crowd (from the night before seemingly) isn't very responsive and (according to his comments on Monkeywrench Radio), they had intended to play a little longer (extra encore), but everyone left early!
Extra special thanks to Carl Sylvester, John Reynolds, Dan Leehr, and Gary Ferrari for their invaluable help.

Artwork and Release Notes:
These are the discs 9, 10, 11, and 12 in a fan-created 18-disc boxed set called "The Monkeywrench Chronicles".
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed opens the show early with the (then) unreleased 'Dead Man'. A little background on the live version: we have the Fastbacks to thank for this. Apparently Kim was backstage about to go on and was very nervous. Eddie asked her what was wrong and she told him she was nervous to walk out there to chants of "ed-DIE, ed-DIE". So, ed-DIE said, "I'll take care of that," grabbed a guitar, and walked out onstage. Many attendees didn't even recognize him at first. Later in their set, Ed quips, "So these are the faces I would have seen if I could have lifted my head up in San Francisco." After a long departure from these sort of antics, Ed climbs the speaker stacks and scaffolding during 'Porch.' He includes a bit of the 'Three Little Birds' tag in Porch, repeating the "every little thing's gonna be alright" line a few times. Ben Harper and Kim Warnick, from the Fastbacks, join PJ in 'Rock 'n Roll Star.'

After 'Jeremy,' Ed says "Thanks. Good singing." for the background vocals. Before 'Corduroy,' the crowd starts the
"Eddie" chant and Ed comments, "We've been through a lot to get into this room tonight. You're gonna embarrass me in
front of my mother." After 'Better Man' he notes, "What a sad fuckin' story. Wanna hear some good news? Of course it's
not as exciting as the bad news. Isn't that true? ... Ever see people rally around a spot of good news? They can take
some bad news and make it last for years." After dissing the Ticketmaster situation and the cops in "north county," he
tells how the proceeds from the difference in the cost of tickets ($50,000) is being donated to the Surfrider Foundation
"... so you can ride the waves."

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed totally botches the start of 'I Got Shit.' He tells everyone that has to go to school the next day that he'll write them excuse notes (so they can continue to play). A stunning closing with 'Indifference' with the house lights up. A solid show before a smallish crowd.

09 I Am a Patriot
notes: The English Beat's 'Save it for Later' snippet tossed into 'Better Man' sound great!
Ed pays homage to Josh Ling during a quiet part of 'State:' "I recognize you. You were in the
front row just the other night. I recognize you ... how you doin'?" :) In a reference to the lunar
eclipse, Ed says, "It's happening right now. I just wanna rip the roof off this place."
He get the crowd to yell three times, laughs and launches into 'Habit.' 'RVM' features the
slow beginning. Toward the end of 'Alive,' Dennis Rodman takes the stage and puts Ed up on his
shoulders, where Ed completes the song. Prior to the 'Noise of Carpet' outro, Ed utters the words,
"black red yellow." After 'Blood,' Ed retrieves a shirt tossed onstage, saying "Hey look, plaid,
grunge; it's purple." The Fastbacks help PJ with 'Leaving Here,' singing backup vocals and
Ed expressing hope that the "boys up front will pay attention to the lyrics." 'Patriot'
is performed solo by Ed, accompanying himself on guitar with the rest of the band watching
from the side of the stage.

Everyone should thank Bill for doing this...it is fantastic!! If you can't tell from the source information, this is A+ soundboard quality. Sorry this is starting late, I was scrambling to get the artwork done today since I was gone all week.
Show Notes (thanks to fivehorizons):
Great long show with a very talkative Ed. During 'Not For You' Ed talks about the meaning of the song, saying it's not directed towards fans, but "a different entity ... someone who thinks they're more important than the people making the music; the people listening to the music; or the music itself. And this is just a reminder that they're not." 'Alive' is started and stopped, because of technical problems. Ed sings 'Footsteps', while everything is straightened out. Part of the fence comes down during 'Blood' and a near riot ensues. (In reality, when the barrier came down, security guards began using pepper spray. The wind was blowing into the pavilion, forcing people with seats to venture nearer the stage to escape it, making it seem like there was a mad rush to the stage.) During 'Porch' Ed tries to calm the crowd down while Mike plays a little part of Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4'. Ed says, "It's like swimming on coral ... there are chairs and people below you, settle down!" "Darlin' you don't want to be up there. That's for the people up front. The people up top you guys go kcufin' nuts! But the people up front settle down." Before they start 'Who You Are', Ed tries to calm the crowd: "It's a little crazy up here. You can sit down, it's cool. I can see you all if you sit, or stand, you can see me too. Ok, the next three words for the next five minutes are Peace and Love." He changes the second line of the second verse saying, "kcuf the stage divers." After the song he reiterates, "This is all good. We're going to keep playing but I want to change the policy in the front row here. Security, you listening? Usually you come over the top you get two, three chances. You guys, anybody who comes over the top, you're going out. Just stay on the floor, you got it, ok? You look good where you are. Just stay where you are." For the 'Daughter' tag, Ed gets the crowd to sing along, "like in New York" to 'The Real Me.' |

(^) = MFC is premiered here in a fashion, though it is only riffs
(~) = Bass guitar played by Brendan O'Brien (he had played on the studio version as well)
Recording Notes:
The best known source for this show. From the beginning of the show until "Corduroy", there are some wind noises on the master that are basically unfixable (it was extremely windy in the stadium), but after that, the sound is great (the taper most likely made an adjustment which improved the sound).
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
With the election less than a month away, this show had a definite cause: Jesse Helm's going away party (it didn't work). Gloria Steinem spoke in an effort to get people to think and register to vote (Rock the Vote). Concerned about the barriers breaking, people getting crushed, and the fire marshall threatening to cancel the show, someone on the crew pleads with the crowd to back up and chill out. After the first song, Ed says, "... we're about 30 seconds from kicking in here and I just want to make sure that everybody watches their neighbor ... that everybody keeps up. Don't do too much of this spinning pit stuff or someone's going to get hurt, and that would suck." Then later: "...I would like the audience myself to just take two steps back. Can we all do that? On the count of three ... one, two..." (crowd steps back and cheers). Ed says something to the effect of, "I knew this was an intelligent crowd." The crowd does listen and the show continues without further problems. The mirrorball is set into motion during a cranked 'Better Man' and drops down midway through 'RVM.' Ed is into a lot of Townshend windmills and jumps and tags 'Habit' as "speaking as my own bad self." Brendan O'Brien helps out on bass on 'Who You Are.' {correction: he actually plays on the song "I Got Shit"}

(^) = Version played here has an unusual arrangement, starting off much slower than normally played (like the Bridge '96 shows)
Recording Notes:
This is by far the best sounding known source of this show. The only thing that has been cut out is some insignificant talking during the encores by the Triple-J DJ. The channels have also been switched to their correct places (Mike on the left, Stone on the right).
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
The show was broadcast on the radio throughout Australia, and on the internet in real time on JJJ. As is typically the case, the shows get better on second or third nights, and PJ's third show in Melbourne is tremendous. Ed slips in a tribute to the late Michael Hutchence (of INXS) during 'In My Tree' ("I'm so high I hold just one breath, give it to INXS, just like my innocence"). Some guitar chords from Midnight Oil's 'Beds are Burning' lead to a wonderful version of 'Corduroy,' which includes the little stop/start thing during the bridge towards the end. Ed's wonderful baritone comes through on 'Wishlist' and the "Camaro" line is changed to "I wish I was the full moon shining off your bulldozer's hood," plus "I wish I was the sound, of 50 million hands upraised for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan," and "I wish I was lucky man ... well I guess that I am ... I wish I could share with my friends, oh how many things that I have." 'Even Flow' again awesome, featuring really extended soloing from Mike; very prolific and a manic version of 'StBC' (dedicated to "... all those who work at Triple J and the guys who work at PBS"). The 'Daughter' outtro/improv ("poor little girl screaming traffic in her hair ...") is a Shudder to Think song titled 'Pebbles.' A couple of verses from 'Crazy Mary' lead to 'Elderly Woman.' 'Porch' leads off as the slower version (like Bridge '96), but later speeds into the more familiar, rocked out version.

Recording Notes:
Editing involved mostly consisted of the reduction of the loud claps throughout the show, making it much more enjoyable to listen.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
An incredibly fast version of 'Hail Hail' with Stone commenting, "Good, God - that was fast!" 'In Hiding' finally returns to a setlist (yea!) and a 'Push Me Pull Me' improv for a 'Daughter' outro?! 'Mankind' finally surfaces (Stone's Australian singing debut, with PJ anyway). When the crowd cheers at the end, he cracks, "They love me ... they really love me!" At the end of 'Porch,' Ed reaches out to the pit and pulls a guy on stage. He lifts Ed up on his shoulders and spins him around and around. Ed proceeds to do the same to this fellow! Jack shines during his great drum solo at the end of 'Immortality.' At the end of 'Smile,' Ed gives his harmonica to former world champion surfer and local Sydney resident, Tom Carroll, who is watching at side stage. Ed says near show's end that they have to stop as he has to get up early to surf the next day. Some great guitar solos by Stone at this show.

Recording Notes:
Channels have been switched so Mike is on the left and Stone is on the right. This is one of the very few true digital stereo soundboards available for a pre-2000 show.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
The band absolutely stands and delivers for this final show of the West Leg of the 1998 tour, and the crowd does likewise. Ed surprises the audience by walking onstage, Rickenbacker in hand, and graces the crowd with an incredible rendition of 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' before Sean Lennon's set. He also introduces the Wallflowers, bopping onstage to 'Emotional Rescue,' the Wallflowers' pre-show music. Later, he greets the crowd: "Are you the same fucks from yesterday? Ya look damn familiar ... actually I think you're better ... so far." Killer versions of 'Faithfull,' 'Do The Evolution' and 'Porch' are highlights. Ed dedicates 'GTF' to "the birds and people that think like them." Stone speaks: "We're gonna kick it up a notch -- with me!" as they go into a great 'Mankind.' Ed starts off the encore by informing everyone that "the Hanson concert hasn't let out yet so we're just gonna keep playing ..." and later says, "I'd like to thank god for the weather but I don't believe in him." Tonight's special guest: airborne Mister Pickles! 'Yellow Ledbetter' again, including the Hendrix riff plus a bit of 'The Star Spangled Banner.' We'll miss you, guys. See you in August.

Notes (Thanx to 5H!):
After 'Brain of J,' Ed steps up and says, "I hate to say it, but you guys are kinda quiet," but after the first encore he says, "I knew you guys would liven up." He messes up the second verse in 'Even Flow,' forgets it completely and gets the next one right (with the crowd helping) and looks out and says, "Got that fucker right, didn't I?" The 'Habit' line is along the lines of "speaking as a man who loves everyone regardless of race, creed, color or sexual preference." After 'MFC,' Ed takes a swig of beer and a woman yells, "Hey, Ed! Gimme some of that beer," prompting him to respond: "What? All I heard was 'Hey, Ed. Gimme some of that either beer, pick or your dick' ... and I got lots of beer, lots of picks and only one dick ... and I ain't wasting it on a boring ass place like Knoxville." After the next song, Ed singles her out and gives her his pick. Ed talks about how there isn't much to do in Knoxville on a Saturday night. He says he watched SNL and masturbated. 'My Heart Will Go On' is the Celine Dion (Titanic theme) song ("near, far, wherever you are ...) !!! During 'Alive,' Ed notices a fan in a Cubs jersey and mouths "Cubbie fan?" The dude says "yeah" and Ed mouths "Atta boy." During 'RVM,' Stone is dazed-looking during the jam, and Ed steps up and stares at his hands as he plays. Stone startles, noticing Ed and they both die laughing and Ed mouths "Rock on, son." 'Hard to Imagine' is introduces as as song that probably "only 1 or 2 or 10 or 20" people in the audience has heard before. Mike has difficulty with his typically long solo during 'Black,' so he cuts it short, looking frustrated. Ed introduces 'Last Kiss' by saying he used to think 'Black' was the saddest song he had ever heard until he heard 'Last Kiss.' Thompson-Boiling Arena is the home of the Univ. of TN basketball champions and Ed picks up on this, noting that "women kick ass in this building," leading to 'Leaving Here.' All night PJ is in great spirits, with Ed fucking around with the crowd up front ... lots of picks tossed out and spit flying. Mike seemed to have trouble with his sound as he cuts his solos down quite a bit, but still plays in fine form. Ed and Stone kept breaking guitar strings. |

Recording Notes:
The annoying glitches on the ALD source have been removed during "Release", but it still sounds a little strange where the two sources didn't completely gel (still, it is 2000 times better than the glitches of course). The mono ALD recording is greatly improved by the mix, basically turning it into a stereo recording.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
An amazing show with Ed's emotions all over the place. Ed takes the stage prior to Ben Harper's set, plays the riff to 'Wishlist' saying, "I wish I was Ben Harper" before playing 'Throw Your Arms Around Me.' Opening music to PJ's set is 'Aye Davanita' and *not* 'The Color Red!' 'GTF' and Dissident are extremely emotional; it appears as though Ed is crying, and as a result, he flubs a few words. Before 'MFC' he says he had to compose himself before going on. Before 'Even Flow,' he comments, "It's take no prisoners time;" he gets the words right and laughs about it. The 'Habit' saying is "Speaking as a someone who pahked the cah at the Gahden," (a reference to the Boston Garden) delivered with an exaggerated Boston accent. Before "Present Tense,' Ed says he was reading this thing in the hotel room, and he wanted to see if it said anything about the concert coming up, and he pretends like he's reading this pamphlet, and says: "As yet another summer of drunken musical orgies comes to a close at the Great Woods Amphitheatre ... Pearl Jam and Ben Harper: sold out, SUCKER ..." During 'Porch' Ed comes into the crowd, telling people not to pull on him. Right before 'Go' he says, "It's coming to a close ... if this was my summer, this is what I'd be thinking." Some idiot is throwing quarters at Ed and he launches into a huge tirade (rightfully so) and then catches himself ("Ahh, that felt good.") 'Last Kiss' is started and stopped, with Ed noting, "They've got it now ... same drums though." The show is closed with, "Have a nice millenium; until next time." This is one of the finest shows of 1998, with excellent versions of songs and the band in great spirits. As is often typical, the second show at the same venue is the best!

Recording Notes (FGE):
Some parts of 'Patriot' were made mono to remove mic bumps in one channel, while other parts were patched with the SS>D100 (sec L, row M) source to remove mic bumps in both channels. This results in a shifty sound, but it's better than the mic bumps or the constant loud talking/screaming throughout the SS source. There's also a channel shift at the beginning of 'Act of Love' that's on the CMII source and was not patched with the SS source due to equipment problems during the same section. Part of Corduroy was patched with the SS (2nd row) because someone talked to the CMII taper.
Recording Notes (spacedvest):
Best source...FGE left out the Gloria speech, and this was later patched back in place. This required the whole show to be retracked and some tracks moved to the second disc due to time constraints.
Artwork Notes (spacedvest):
Instead of releasing their live compilation album "Live on Two Legs" after the 1998 tour, Pearl Jam came very close to releasing a live release for this Washington show called "Live at Constitution Hall". At the last minute, it was decided to release the live compilation instead (it was so close that artwork for the Constitution Hall release had already been completed). This release is kind of a "what if?" release which is supposed to try and capture what the public may have gotten if Pearl Jam had not changed their minds.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed says, "Hi, it feels like we're in the White House ... we haven't played a place with carpet in a while; I think this place is the last bastion of sanity in town. Music is the choice; we're here tonight, you're gonna hear words and entertainment, not in any particular order; Hovercraft's gonna come out (applause ... someone shouts 'Ed for President') ... It's not gonna happen, unless you agree to release the tapes that say, 'Ed was sitting in his hotel room smoking pot out of a bong (applause)" and he goes into 'I Am a Patriot.' Several speakers follow from Voters For Choice, and then Gloria Steinem speaks: "I pledge to you that I will go to jail before I tell Ken Starr anything that goes on here tonight ... These guys live their beliefs; they're smart and good-hearted; they use their heads and their minds, they started out, they had tough times, but they weren't broken by them, and it's rare that any other group that they've remained themselves with their success ... they look after their true selves and your true selves" and then she introduces the band, making mistakes on Stone and Mike's names. =) The band comes out and Ed says, "You know why we're here; we'll talk later." During 'Not for You,' Ed comments: "We want to dedicate this next set of lines to the CC" before the "all that's sacred line" (referring to the Christian Coalition, who are meeting in DC this week). Ed's delivery during 'All Those Yesterdays' is particularly notable and distinct. 'Push Me Pull Me' is a little rough, and Ed shrugs at the end, and then says, "This one we'll do better ..." leading to 'Faithfull.' Somebody passes up a big sign, and he reads it: "Dear PJ: word up, dogs ... you guys fucking kick it. Look us up when you're back in DC, we're in the book; Bill, Hillary and Chelsea." (That was not what the sign really said =)). And then in a Clinton voice, Ed says, "He just needs to go on TV and say, 'Shoot, it's no big deal'...but I guess he already did that a couple of weeks ago." Someone shouts "I love you Eddie," and he replies, "Watch it, keep it consensual ... this isn't about issues." Then someone yells, "I love PJ" and Ed says, "Well, so do I ... this just is bipartisan politics in motion, that's what's ruining the country, ruining the office of the President ... people are playing king of the hill while there's people with lives, families, debts and injury who really need help," before starting 'Present Tense.' Mike's solo during 'Black' is right on, and Ed applauds him, and notes him when the song is over. "The last time we played here was with L7 and Young Neil ... he gave me a song writing lesson at a half-price rate; this is what I came up with ... on my final, he gave me a B+ I think" leading to 'I Got Shit.' Mike sings with Ed during 'Better Man' during the "she dreams in color" line! Ed has a bunch of VFC condoms inside his tambourine and starts handing them out toward the end of 'Alive.' Ed thanks the VFC people, "They're not up there to lead any one astray; don't let the funny business down the street think that voting isn't worth it. Vote for what you believe." 'Soldier of Love' is dedicated to "people on the other side of the issue." Gloria comes out with roses before 'YL,' and says, "There's history here tonight; this is the first time Hovercraft has played Voters for Choice; Pearl Jam's third; Sadie 7 is really Beth Liebling, Ed Vedder is Ed Vedder; these are two artists, married to each other, here tonight, both for this cause, and dedicating their time. I want to thank Stone and Mike for not getting pissed at me for messing up their names. I don't know if I can get Beth out here .. (the audience chants 'Beth, Beth') ... this is the crew's bread and butter, I want to thank them for donating their time tonight." Then Beth comes out, takes a rose, she and Ed do a little dance; Beth leaves, and Gloria says, "Democracy comes to those who vote," and the band goes into 'YL.'

left and right channels.
Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Stone is spotted during Rancid's set from side stage; he appears to know all the lyrics. The lead-in
music is 'Aye Davanita' again. It is a hot, humid night and Ed jokes about how the humidity is fucking
up his hair (he has a serious 'fro thing going on). The improv leading to 'Habit' (sounding much like
the 2/20/98 Maui improv musically), includes the lyrics "dropped three times." Instead of a "speaking
as ..." line, Ed plays a slow, distinctive guitar riff. Before 'In Hiding,' he comments how the next
song has a chorus he'll need help with from the crowd and how he has trouble remembering ... it "must
be that pot I smoked last night." During the 'RVM' solo, Ed strikes a pose with one arm to the right
while he is looking left, and he's totally still, not moving, but his sweat is pouring down. More effects
on the backdrop: clouds on 'GTF;' water on 'Immortality;' lightning on 'Better Man.' During the 'Porch'
jam, Ed starts singing "last dance ... last chance." (Donna Summer anyone?) The 'Angie' snippet is a
surprise, seeming as if the intent is to play the entire song but they abandon it after Mike and Ed
can't quite get it together after the first few notes. Ed tosses the microphone above the scaffolding
during 'Alive' (he doesn't climb the cord), and it isn't retrieved but remains looped into the final
encore. Before 'Baba,' Ed thanks Rancid and challenges them to play a Who song. Rather than tossing
the tambourine into the crowd during 'Baba,' he throws it frisbee-style at the backdrop, and he joins
in on guitar for a rousing ending. A rocking show with the band having fun, despite the heat. (On the
setlist but not played: 'Black,' 'Go' and 'Nothingman.')
