Warren Haynes played and sang on Hard To Handle, Sugaree, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and Slipknot! onward. Joan Osbourne sang in Hard to Handle, Casey Jones, and Lovelight onward. Michael Kang played violin on Cumberland Blues, and played electric guitar & sang during Sitting on Top of the World as well as from Lovelight onward. Sound path: AKG c1ooos (hypercardiod caps)->samson mixpad 4->vxpocket v2-> cooledit 2k (2352-byte boundary alignment, normalization for hunter, minor clip fixes at end of show "climax" peak, two drops patched as detailed below)->shn via shn2k, verified w/ shntool Notes: Muchos kudos to Bob Clevenger (bobclevenger.com) for his assistance in fixing some signal drops where the vxpocket cable came loose from the laptop! The connector is fragile & easily disconnects, alas one of the downsides to the vxpocket card. Bob had his deck (a pcm-m1) plugged into the headphone output from the mixpad to his deck's analog input, which under careful inspection produced a closely matching signal that was spliced into the empty locations. The mix is rather monoaural due to the placement of the taper section.

However, the noodling/segue betweeen "Mississippi Half-Step" (d4t01) and "Playin' in the Band" (d4t02) would either be lost in a disc change, or, necessitate an overlap of music between disc 2 and disc 3. Sugar Magnolia 9:33 Total time: 76:21 Jim Powell's notes: There are conflicting reports whether the SBD master is on cassettes or reels, but it sounds like it would have to be reels. The last 26 seconds of Here Comes Sunshine is missing on our copy of the SBD and is patched in using an AUD master from a cassette copy of unknown low generation. 22 seconds in Eyes Of The World are patched from this AUD source also. The 22-second cut in Eyes looks like a cassette tape flip introduced when the reels were transcribed to 1st gen cassette. The missing conclusion of Here Comes Sunshine is harder to account for on this hypothesis, but there seems a reasonable chance that both missing segments are intact on the master reels. Meanwhile, this tree. First set highlights include TLEO, Row Jimmy, GSET and China Cat > Rider. The Here Comes Sunshine times almost 16 minutes, is the longest known on circulating tape and probably the best. The Dark Star is the third longest known at 43:28, and one of the all time best. It is the fraternal twin of 11/11/73.D Dave Greenberg did the patches. David Gans supplied DATs of the 1st gen cassette SBD and Jim Powell instigated the project, supplied the AUD cassette used to patch the SBD's defects, and wrote this note.

Enjoy -- alternate tracking suggestion by listener Greg Hamilton: 02/26/77 Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, CA GSH note: The track list here is my redistribution of the tracks across 3 discs, so that all discs are under 74 minutes. I went into Right Track Studios in NYC (my home base studio ) set up in studio B (which is the premier state of the art Digital Music Studio in world). I had clean dat copies (provided by Tim Daulton) that were NOT decoded. I set up a chain consisting of: Panasonic Sv4100 AES out-->DB Technologies 924AD (24bit/96k capability)-->Dolby 361 Modules w/DBX K9-22 cards-->Neve Capricorn 32bit point processing/full 24bit Digital Console-->DB Technologies 122s 24bit/16bit conversion and 44.1k/48k sample rate conversion-->Panasonic Sv4100 Dat AES in. This is State of the Art Tchnology, getting as much of the music that was on the tapes as possible. The thing about DBX that nobody else got is that in order to decode it properly the volume into the decoder has to be exact, otherwise the tapes can be to bass heavy or to bright and compressed. These tapes are absoultly the best possible reproductions of the dig tapes made from the masters (I only wish I had the actual reels so I could do a proper azimuth adjustment on them). According to him, he did no editing, simply seeded his superior copy. However, it was missing Sunrise due to DAT problems. Also, every song was tracked slightly off. The first few seconds of each song was actually at the end of the track previous. So, I patched in Sunrise from the earlier Etree source (thanks Alan Schlissel & Scott Sherman!). Then, using SoundForge XP 4.0 (thanks Jeff!), I pieced the tracks back into disk-sized wav files, which I then split back up using CDWav. I also changed the tracking of disks 2 and 3 so that the disk break came in between songs instead of between St. Stephen and Terrapin. I did no editing to the actual sound, except to adjust the level of Sunrise to match the rest of the show as well as possible.

A splice at the ends of certian tracks on CD1 it apprears that some of the crowd banter inbetween songs was deleted or never continued. At first I thought CD 1 could have been other recordings from other shows combined to make CD 1. This is NOT the case here. I got this show from a VERY VERY reliable person. The splices are at the ends of CD 1 tracks 1 @ 5:00, 2 @ 2:52, 3 @ 4:37, 4 @ 2:25, 6 @ 4:36.750, 7 @ 8:41, 8 @ 6:01. On tracks 5, 9 , 10 no splices. The songs are very close together(no tunning, etc.) thust having no splices to save on cassette time remember this is the 80's. I also noticed a D/O on D1t6 @ 4:36.871 to 4:37.250 during crowd the banter all removed. D2t6 has a splice with D/O's @ 7:27. D/O on D3t1 is missing first couple of notes. D3t3 @ 6:35 and 6:38 Removed. Static on D3t6 @ 8:43 Removed. D3t12 D/O @ :08 removed. Since the Dead did not allow taping at the 1980 Radio City Hall shows I consider myself lucky to have this show. Note: I received this show on cd directly from the dat transfer. I noticed after extraction that eac was reading the peak levels at a maximum of 28%. I then extracted each disc as one big .wav and normalized peak to 98%. I then used CDWAV to remark the tracks and edit out some interminably long pauses in between a couple of tracks. The end result sounds pretty good IMHO.---Enjoy--Jeff M. DISC ONE Set One 1. tuning 2. Jack Straw> 3. Althea 4. Mama Tried> 5. Big River 6. Peggy-O 7. //When I Paint My Masterpiece 8. Louie Louie 9. Thanks Tommmy. d3t06 had a bunch of Pops and Crackles toward the end. I fixed these by cutting out the problems and pasting in the other channel. Tape flip in drums. This was originally tracked on 2 tracks. The first faded out and then the second began. I reattached them as seemless as possible. The AUD was also missing this bit. Drums and Space are seemless. The last few seconds on the Sugar Magnolia track (during the Audience) fades out. So the Encore starts abruptly.

(Only info listed on J-card "mic:AKG") Who ever did this recording was VERY GOOD at recording this show! We listened to it and we're beside ourselves at the quality of this recording! The clarity is amazing and the lack of crowd noise is remarkable for an FOB. GOOD LUCK trying to find a better Daud of this show! ENJOY ! ! ! This was an easy fix with Soundforge. Ryan's Jerrysite (thejerrysite.com) lists it as 6/22/79, so to be consistent, thats what it is now.
