Notes from phish.net:
Live taping has been going since the band's second show, 11/3/83.
Shelly Culbertson said of the first gig, "Nope, that show was not
recorded. However, their next show - 11/3/83, basement of Slade
Hall, UVM - was; I think it was taped on a boom box with condenser
mics and the tape is entirely over-saturated and distorted. The
tape was labeled with felt tip on masking tape and appears to have
resided on someone's car floor or dashboard for a few years. No,
copies of this tape are not available - but I can try to post the
setlist some day, if I ever figure it out. ;-)" |

"Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate
recording board at the shows. They are some of the highest quality
Phish tapes in existence: 4/22/90, 10/30/90, 10/31/90, 11/2/90,
11/3/90, 11/4/90, 3/13/91, 3/15/91, 3/16/91, 3/17/91, 3/22/91,
3/23/91, 4/5/92.
Except for the 4/5/92 tape, they have all been fairly widely circulated.
They were done on a large recording console (not EQ) and mixed completely
separately from the board mix, rumoredly done in a truck outside the venue.
The engineer used 2 audience mics to mix in crowd/hall ambience (on most of them).
See also, PA info."
Quoted from: http://www.phish.net/PhishFAQ/tquality.html
Info From Kevin Shapiro: "11/3/90 and the other tapes of the era (10/30-11/4)
were all done by Mike Grace through a separate 16 track mixer and ran direct to 2
track DAT. He basically used the same setup in Spring 1991 too."
Mastered by Mike Grace, DATs for this transfer provided by Mikey Perrott. Thanks Mikey!

*the original .shns (source was listed as "DSBD --> Dat (that's all I know) Sound great!!!") were not split on sector boundaries
(only disc 1). I took the original .shns, decompressed them, put the .wavs back together in CoolEdit, and then cut them up correctly in CDWAV. Disc 2 was redone as well, just for the sake of splitting up a couple of tracks that weren't split on the original .shns.

Notes:Mike's bass solo in YEM starts with P-Funk riff, proceeds into very abstractinteraction with Fishman.
At one point during the vocal jam,Trey sings, "Ay ay ay ay, I'm a frito bandito," indicating hisstate of mind.
The Shaggy Dog out of YEM was performed a capella.
Page teases Cold As Ice immediately before Chalk Dust.
Carolina was performed a capella with no mics.

this show is in low circulation. good show from a good tour.
this has been circulated on analog, though very little. there is also a
sbd2>cdr version of set 1 that circulates, though it is mastered too fast.
although this is by no means a perfect recording, this is the best circulating.
perhaps due to this, a better copy will appear, along eith the 5-5-92 bogarts show.

this is definitely a sbd recording. i had to edit out tapeflips at around 47 minutes into each set, therefor proving to me it is a sbd. it was labeled to me as only 1 cass gen, and the only really irritating analog hiss is between songs, and when it is really quiet, other than that this recording sounds really sweet!
this is one of those classic great second sets where you can tell that the band could have cared less if there was an audience, they were just haveing a hell of a good time entertaining themselves. a must have in my opinion!!!
DISC 2 IS SET 2 IN IT'S ENTIRETY AND IS TRACKED FOR AN ****80 min CD****

This is a great show, but this recording has some problems. There was a pretty bad storm that night, and the wind and rain show up on the tape at times. Otherwise, it sounds pretty darn good. Unfortunately I do not remember which capsules were on the mics that night and I didn't write it down - sounds like the hypers to me.

Sounds great Except for D3 t7 (Old Home Place) and 8 (amazing Grace) are muted due to accapella.
These are pretty much indistinguishable here and prolly better left off or edited. This show is from DanG at Dylan and his copy is the same.

It happened as we were walking to the bus to leave the venue. somebody
said play us one and we said sure and the roadies got our stuff. i was
already holding my banjo which probably started the whole thing. I was
on tour with them to teach them bluegrass and had been playing with
them on stage some at night. Hoist was being released at the time and
i actually played with them on that material at night as well as the
bgrass set. though they really didn't know bgrass and had just been
playing for a short while, this truly captured the spirit of the music
because of their openess, talent, and what i call that "wonderful
phish curiosity". i was touched to hear this because when you boil it
all down this is what it's all about. the people just want to hear the
music and truly i didn't wanna leave. you can hear the joy. i lead the
jam as phish had never really done that before. when we got on the bus
they were so happy that we did it and i think they felt, maybe for the
first time, the true spirit of what bgrass and folk music is all about.
the jam turned out to be the most important thing that i taught them.
thanks for sharing it. i am touched.
Truly,
"rev" Jeff Mosier

Comments: I queried for this show in the etree db recently and found only one person with a digital copy. For many pacific northwesterner's and
other phans who made the trip, this is a long sought after show. It was one of the best of the tour, and extremely high energy. The band as well as many
phans had quite an evening crossing the border and this is reflected during multiple show narratives (listen to makisupa and mid-highway blues).
If you've got a copy of this show that includes the encore, please contact Michael Stern <m_stern6@hotmail.com> mockingbird.dyndns.org

Notes
------
There are three places (on the original DAT) that sound like brief 'skips'. There is one at the beginning of Julius (which is barely noticable), and two in Possum (which are very noticable). There is also a fair amount of clipping resulting from the levels being too high on the DAT recording. It is not very noticable, from my repeated listening, except on some vocal parts. All problems noted here were in the source DAT.

6. Cavern - 6:25
*With a "Third Stone from the Sun" (Jimi Hendrix) jam.
**With "Listen to the Music" (Doobie Brothers) jam.
#Page to Theremin (solo), Trey to keyboards, Mike to guitar, Page to bass, Mike joins Trey on keyboards, Trey joins Fish on drums, Mike takes piano solo, Fish to guitar...and into "Rocko William."
^With a long intro (9 min).
For a non-80 min CD-R solution you can put the encore on one of the 1st 2 CD's, however this will ruin the continuity of the show. Due to the non-stop 2nd set there's really no way around this.

*For Elvis Week. #This segment was dominated by the stage presence
of Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Colonel Forbin doesn't meet
Icculus this timebut rather finds "Ken Uncle Sam Bozo Easy Kesey".
At this time Kesey, dressed as Uncle Sam, appearson the stage and
accounces that the Bozos have been missing for two years but are
on Phish tour now. He calls one by one the Tin Man, the Scarecrow,
and Frankenstein (Phish breaks into "Frankenstein") to help him
find the Bozos, which soon appear as four white things in costume.
After singing about the Bozos which are doing interpretive dance,
the Pranksters all leave the stage after Kesey hears the "Bozo
Mockingbird". Trey comments that this is what happens "after you
do too much acid 30 years later..." Phish had been playing
background music (including McGrupp and Ghost teases) which had
developed by this point into a deep funk jam. Trey announces that
"we are supposed to start 'Famous Mockingbird', but the funk is
too deep." The band continues the funk jam and eventually segues
into "Camel Walk." |

Yet another installment on the PCP Fall 97 project, 11/16/97 represents
my first attempt at making shn files or md5 sums. The discs are flawless
as far as my ears can tell, except for some reason the track split
between Scent of a Mule and Poor heart actually comes in at the end of
the "mule duel". Scent finishes out and Poor Heart is complete. As my
editing skills (and editing software) are lacking, I decided to let
everyone deal with this how they want to. I have just left it the way it
is. Make sure to email me at the address above if you find anything that
isn't kosher. I have listened to both discs
(made from unshortening the shn files I created) and everything seems
ok, md5's as well check out. Enjoy the show.

NOTE: D1 is 74:21 It will fit on a Sony or Verbatim blank
If you don't have blanks long enough, or to retain PCP compliance,
move Disc 1 Track 10 to the beginning of Disc 2. The remainder of
the tracks will still fit on the 2nd disc. The advantage to keeping
it on Disc 1 is that the entire 1st set will be on one disc, but either
way works fine.

2. Harry Hood intro tease > Also Sprach Zarathustra >
3. Wading in the Velvet Sea
4. Meatstick$
* - with Jon (coming from sunny Florida to sunny Florida, "Soda Jerk")
on vacuum
** - unfinished
*** - J.J. Cale cover from the album "Naturally" best known for the
Eric Clapton version; first time played
**** - (11:35pm) Set began with Father Time on stage pedalling away at
a stationary bike, powering a large clock, the sound of the gears are heard over the PA. At approximately 11:50pm Father Time collapsed from exhaustion and the clock stops. At this time a fan boat was heard from a set of speakers in the back corner of the concert field and a large fan boat entered the field from halfway back, stage right. After crossing 1/4th of the field the sides and top of the fan boat were blown off to reveal the band riding in the hot dog from the 1994 NYE show. The hotdog crossed the concert field and approached the stage as the band threw lei's and other goodies into the crowd.
As the hot dog neared the stage, an instrumental version of "Meatstick" came over the PA. Once the hotdog reached the stage, the band disembarked carrying several meatsticks which were fed to Father Time, reviving him so that the clock could continue moving towards midnight.
^ - instrumental version with the band picking up the song from a pre-recorded version played over the PA for the last 45 seconds of the year
^^ - with vocal/instrumental jam as Trey, Mike and Page sang the notes as they played them
^^^ - recorded live for ABC TV's Millennium coverage (aired between
3:15 and 3:30am EST); Trey instructed the crowd to chant the word "Cheesecake" rather than clap and cheer at the close of the song in an attempt to confuse the TV viewers (similar to the "secret language" additions for the 1992 NYE show); Trey introduced the band for the recorded footage and offered a message of peace and love for the world about the importance of the left lane of the highway being the passing lane
% - with "Cheesecake" vocal jam
%% - Trey solo acoustic
%%% - from "The Siket Disc" with Mike holding up a voice box repeating
the phrase "Quadrophonic Toppling"
%%%% - with Jon on vacuum; Jon introduced Page before the song and Mike
and Trey afterwards, and the band as being Phish 2000
$ - no encore; post-show music over the PA was the Beatles "Here Comes the Sun"

There are 2 level adjustments in this recording. One during tweezer(a few
mins in), and i believe there's one in the opening tune of the first set. I
smoothed out one of them, but the other I could not do anything. |

$ With Kid Rock. Rumor had been strong that this was going to happen and Kid Rock
cruising in a golf cart in the lot forshadowed it. The relationship came about
when Trey and Kid Rock met at a post-Grammy party earlier this year.
# Aerosmith cover, first time played
## Sugarhill Gang cover, first time played. Trey on drums, Fishman briefly played
Trey's guitar and was rapping with Kid Rock. At the end Kid Rock yelled
"You want some rock n roll?!" and then went into the AC/DC classic
### AC/DC cover, second time played since its debut 4/20/89, Full Moon At The Zoo, Amherst College show
(after a fire alarm during Fluffhead, Phish came back onstage and debuted "You Shook Me" and then
segued back into the unfinished Fluffhead)
#### Grand Funk Railroad cover, second time played since its debut 11/16/96, 266 shows. |
