Quote:
This is an interesting glimpse into the state of the band immediately following Brent's untimely demise. This comes right on the heels of the highly innovative fall '90 MSG run (Hornsby's first few shows with the boyz),and directly precedes the Fall European tour. All 3 songs rehearsed find their way into the European setlists. It is too bad "Stander" was dropped from rotation after only a couple of performances. The banter in between takes is an engaging look at the bands rehearsal process, especially in regards
to the addition of 2 new members.

NOTES:
* Thanks to Lee Farber for the original seed!
* There was some re-mastering done to clean up the original tape hiss from this classic show. The processes I took are as follows:
1) Amplified both discs 175% across the board.
2) Sampled a section of silence to obtain a decent noise floor sample (25,000 sample points used).
3) Applied this sample against both discs at 64 percent.
4) Applied a graphic equalizer to boost the high and low spectrums
(specifically between 600 - 800 Hz and 8k & 10 kHz).
***Note: I cut everything above 11 kHz 18dB because nothing
existed above that freq. range on the original recording.

Notes: The "?" in the lineage is not an extra analog generation. I'm just not
sure if the PCM came from a DAT or not, thus I put the question mark in. I
transferred the PCM, removed the DC offset, converted from 44.056Khz to
44.1Khz at the highest quality setting, tracked, and burned this show on
July 30, 2003. I wonder if perhaps the master was recorded with Dolby on and
played back with it off. It seems a bit too bright to me. However, I did
not mess with the recording in any way. Enjoy!
* - There is a very small dropout at 2:10. I tried several times to get a
clean read off the PCM tape at that spot, but could not. It's hardly
noticable, though.
^ - Has a vocal jam based on "Hawaii" and a "Lullabye" tease in it.
^^ - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" tease to start

***RE-MASTERING NOTES 8/2003***
This show almost certainly has the pre-emphisis enabled if this a *true* PCM recording. That is the most likely cause for the overly harsh sound of the show. Upon getting these SHN's, they were loaded into REBA and passed through a 20band Parametric EQ with the J17 de-emphisis setting. Next in store for this show was a pass through the BBE Sonic Maximizer. This was used to really bring the mix together....it really brought out the low end very well. You can actually hear Mike's bass now ;-) The reason this was done is because if you listen real closely, you may notice you hear a lot of room dynamics....the recording had a slight time smear problem because of the 2 sources used to record this. The BBE unit was used to correct for this. Yes, you heard me right...I think this is a matrix, SBD+AUD. The SOAM has some nasty feedback. I crossfaded the feedback to "lessen" the damage to our ears. The pops in Fluffhead were toned down somewhat, but I had to leave BBFCFM alone....most of the distortion you hear is not dropouts but rather mic overload.
The show was re-mastered, re-tracked, then shn'd in August 2003.

*******************************
*******ABOUT THIS SOURCE*******
*******************************
This is an attempt to patch together a variety of sources and achieve the best possible
combination of sources of this great show. Here are the details:
__________________________________________________________________________
Source #1:
SBD>Cass1>DAT>Editing (audience patches in It's Ice, Tweezer and first few seconds of Lifeboy)>CDR
Tranfer/Editing: Kevin Shapiro
NOTES: Sorry, I don't have any further info as to the audience tape source or the equipment
used in the audience patch. It is likely from the AKG460 rig that he often used in '94.
However, this is all the information included with the discs that I recieved.
__________________________________________________________________________
Source #2:
SBD>Cass1>DAT>CDR (complete Tweezer, missing end of It's Ice [fades out at 7:56])
NOTES: An inferior sounding SBD copy to the one above. Plays fast, levels are saturated, etc.
Unknown tranfer info.
__________________________________________________________________________
Because Kevin's source (Source #1) was the better of the two sources, I've used as much of it
as possible for the recording. This means that everything except the changes described below
has been extracted (using EAC in secure mode) from the copies that Kevin provided. The following
is a summary of the edits that I did, using Cool Edit 2000 and CDWav.
Fixes:
1. Fixed the speed for It's Ice on Source #2 (stretch ratio of 102)
2. Patched the SBD portion that Source #1 was missing from It's Ice (@4:11), and then the remaining
missing part of the track from the Aud source (@8:11). This makes the most complete SBD source,
with the proper ending supplied from the audience tape.
3. Tracking for Horn fixed on Source #1
4. Fixed the speed for Tweezer on Source #2 (stretch ratio of 102)
5. Patched the missing SBD segment of Tweezer on Source #1 with the fixed Source #2 Tweezer (@10:24).
6. Patched ~4 missing seconds from YEM (@ 11:26), using same procedures as above.
____________________________________________________________________________
Known Flaws:
There are still a few anomalies on the recording which I didn't bother trying to fix, for fear of
over-editing. Specifically:
-a fast fade-out after Dog Faced Boy
-a slightly rough switch to the Source #1 audience recording at the very beginning of Lifeboy.
____________________________________________________________________________
This is all the info I have at the moment. While this is by no means a perfect SBD recording
I'm sure you'll enjoy the end result!

Tech notes: I extracted the cds as a range and resplit the tracks using CDWAV. The EAC logs for each disc are included. Some minor static is present during the chess move (d2t1). I applied fades at the beginning and end of each set and the encore using soundforge 4.5. Some of the crowd noise has been edited out between the second set and encore. For this reason, I added a fade to make the switch less abrubt. |

6.You Enjoy Myself ->
7.Purple Rain -> HYHU
Disc 3:
1.Harry Hood
2.Suzy Greenberg
3.E: Highway to Hell
Show Notes: In a Halloween tease responding to Michael Jackson predictions, the band teased Black or White before GTBT and Beat It before Hood and in Suzy Greenberg. Suzy also included a Tweezer Reprise tease.

This show starts out with okay sound, but it gets better by about the 3rd song. AS all recent Wilco is, it is audience so it took the taper a couple songs to get the sound right. |
