This is an amazing audience capture of a group that played together for about 2 months late in 1980. From info that can be seen in Marc Morvan's Pat Metheny Data Base, the gigs with this group started at the end of October and went for only one more date in Santa Barbara after this show at McCabes. Pat was super active with the PMG and touring at this general point in time, but the 80/81 album with Jack DeJohnette in the drum chair and Michael Brecker added in as a second saxophone voice had already been recorded in May 1980, and that band would play more live gigs later in 1981. Not sure about the circumstance that led Motian to do these dates, but I'm glad this good recording is around.
