Notes JEMS' latest series presents new transfers of master recordings made by SoCal-based taper Rick L who was active in the early '80s. While he was a fan of bands like Yes and taped them on more than one occasion, his tastes were eclectic and of-the-moment, ranging from new wave artists featured on KROQ-FM to reggae and jazz acts. So while he didn't have Millard-caliber equipment, he did cover many shows not recorded by Millard or others who leaned towards the classic rock end of the spectrum. We'll be presenting the best of his work and his collection over the course of this year.

Vol. Four delivers on the promise of Rick's more eclectic fare as we present reggae greats Black Uhuru performing at the Pac Amp in Costa Mesa. This was the band's second proper tour of the US, and the set list leans heavily on the album Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, a 1983 re-release of 1979's Showcase with the addition of "Shine Eye Gal."

This show features the core Black Uhuru line-up of Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Derrick Simpson, backed by the legendary rhythm section of Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Sly Dunbar on drums. Guitarist Darryl Thompson, keyboard player Franklin "Bubbler" Waul and percussionist Chris "Sky Juice" Burth complete the line-up.

Rick's taping location was prime as he gets up close sound. While the stereo image shifts a little, this is a very nice recording and a satisfying listen. Samples provided.

We want to thank Rick for lending us his tapes and allowing us to share his work with the DIME audience. Please let him know your appreciation via comments. Also supporting the series are JEMS' frequent collaborators Professor Goody, who prescribed proper pitch adjustments, and mjk5510 who took care of post production.
