| Notes | I'm pretty sure this was only the third full Black Keys set I've ever watched. The first being their 2009 set at Coachella (on the main stage before Morrissey and Paul McCartney) and then their set at Outside Lands 2011 (both before my taping days, so no, I didn't record either of them). I never caught them after that (skipped their headlining slot at Coachella 2012, and didn't attend their set at Bottlerock in 2013). Anyway, needless to say, it had been a while since I've seen them, and I figured I would never get a chance to catch them in a small venue again, so if they're playing at Stubb's, I should probably take advantage of that. Every year I've attended SXSW (2022-present), I've attended at least one big showcase at Stubb's. The first year it was the Lemonheads, then the Zombies followed after that. As an outsider coming into Austin, I enjoy the venue, I think it looks cool, and it's very easy to get a good viewing spot. I do think the crowds tend to be a bit talkier than other venues around the city, not completely sure why that is, but it's just an (annoying) observation. Anyway, I had no problem getting into the venue. I figured it would be packed with a huge line, and perhaps it was later in the evening, but I wasn't going to risk it, so I got there early and made it into the venue before any of the openers (all bands on the Easy Eye Sound record label I believe) played (I recorded all of them btw). I thought the band sounded great, and I really liked how they used the unique "whale mouth" stage shape with their projections, it ended up looking really cool. The band came out and just jammed non stop for almost 75 minutes straight, playing two new songs off their upcoming album, one of which being "This Is Nowhere" which sounded amazing and is definitely my favorite of the new stuff. And best of all? The crazy thunderstorm/rain that was being predicted all day, stayed away and we all stayed dry for the entire show/night. The magic of Stubbs/SXSW came through again! |
