This is yet another excellent performance, consistent with other gigs from the Aug-Sept Euro/UK tour. The set was played outdoors in the daytime, and of the 10 songs performed, 8 of them are from the new album. The band's performance at this show is flawless across the set. Every song is a highlight, with great energy. Billy has recovered from the sickness he had in Copenhagen a few days before, and his vocals here are a great bonus. A shame that after this short Euro tour, the performances of the new songs in the set would soon become rushed, and Corgan would start becoming more and more antagonistic with the audiences. Here, the band take their time with the arrangements, and Corgan's vocals still have their original whisper/shouting quality, as opposed to the rougher screaming voice he would use more often in future legs of the tour. This show is a nice document of that brief time between the new album's release and the band achieving their first big success, just before they had truly broken through to the mainstream. The new album had only been out for a month, and at this festival they were not the headlining act, yet notice that the massive audience was already familiar with all of the new songs, singing and clapping along. |
