JEMS Notes:
We've been fortunate to know CB for a few decades, first getting to know him for his pioneering work as one of the first serious Bruce Springsteen tapers along with his friend Joe Kivak.

CB has always been generous in the lending of tapes, and when he recently moved away from California, he gave JEMS his reel to reel collection along with some nice, no longer needed gear.

Among those reels were copies of the Talking Heads recordings CB made, some of best quality early tapes of the band. DIME is fortunate to have nfagdtrfb curating an on-going series of Talking Heads releases from the best possible sources, including CB's tapes which have long been in circulation. But when I took a listen, I couldn't help but wonder if a better transfer might yield a superior result.

A few months ago I asked CB if he still had the master cassettes and he sent them my way. This show was was the second time CB recorded Talking Heads, back at My Father's Place on Long Island where they were opening for Television. This time CB recorded on a TDK SA 90, which holds up far better than Memorex tapes, but still required some work as the plastic hubs on TDK tape of this age often atrophy and break. I put in a new hub, spliced the tape back on and the transfer was flawless from there.

The quality of this July show is comparable to the June sets and among the highest quality recordings of the band from this formative period. I will leave it to nfagdtrfb to provide further background. Thanks to CB for letting us make what we hope is the definitive transfer of this historic material.

nfagdtrfb Notes:

Regarding the date of this show... The master tape (and earlier file-set version that circulates) is marked "July 28, 1976". According to newspaper ads, TH & TV played one night at MFP, Tuesday July 27th, and then a four-night run at CBGB's, Wednesday July 28th thru Saturday July 31st. Despite confusion about the date, this recording is clearly from MFP based on the crowd-noise, sound of venue, and similarity to the June 26th recording, and above all, taper CB's own account of having taped at MFP.

Along with the colorful comments/light-heckling from the crowd, this is a solid early-era set, and another great recording job by taper CB. This features one of two known versions of DB warbling his way thru a cover of the Tymes 1963 doo-wop number "So Much in Love". Tina's "ooh-ooh-ooh" backing vocals are barely audible buried in the background. This is also the earliest known version of "Happy Day", which was subsequently added to almost all their setlists in 76 & early-77; at one time DB had originally planned for the song to be on their first single.

Guessing from the song selection, this looks like the early show set opening for Television, or it's possible there was only a single show by each band on this Tuesday night. THANKS to the JEMS crew & taper CB for providing this historical source!
