Already, we’ve enjoyed captures from Sydney (1/19, 20) and the second night in Melbourne (1/26). This, the first night at Myer Music Bowl, is another clean, clear, and likely not-very-circulated recording. With a tight focus on the songs from Monster and its Warner Bros. predecessors, the Australian tour featured R.E.M. finding its groove after five years off the road. Though I missed hearing old favorites — here, “Begin the Begin” is the show’s earliest number — it was hard to argue with a stage show loaded with fresh material. January 25 was the ninth date of Monster ’95, and the performance was quite good: just listen to taut readings of “I Don’t Sleep, I Dream” and “Tongue,” and, of course, “Country Feedback.” I particularly like the transition from a stretched-out, spacey jam on “Turn You Inside-Out” to the Monster deep track “You.” And whether you’re an everynighter like myself or a first-timer, hearing the band plant its flag with “Me In Honey” and “Try Not to Breathe” is simply a delight; boy howdy, do I like those two. With its O’Jays tag, “King of Comedy” appears, which they soon dropped (Mike Mills said some months later that it was “too hard to play”), and so does the rant "Revolution," unreleased at the time. After getting busted the first night in Sydney, I heeded Jared’s advice to pivot and walk on, and I’m glad I did: I went on to tape the remaining shows I saw, proving his adage right: “A tape,” he’d always say, “is better than no tape.” Hear, hear! Grant Lee Buffalo and Died Pretty opened, and they were terrific, making musical discoveries but one delight in my first southern hemisphere summer, where I met new friends and made tapes as I went. Melbourne, like the other Australia torrents, was a team effort: I taped and transferred the digital clone Jared made and stored in the JEMS Archive. Props to mjk5510, who mastered this one especially for you, and to BK for serving as our Executive Director. Turn it up for Jared and Stan, our dear friends who've passed on. Share it freely, and for free! - slipkid68 |
