| Notes | There's quite a story attached to this recording. Here goes... Knowing the security to be fairly rigid at the Ritz, I went prepared. My WM D-6 safely stashed in an inside pocket of my denim jacket, under my leather, I had a cassette player (the cheapo Sony Walkman) in my bag. In it was a tape of the Springsteen John Hammond demo, just for the bus journey. Thus I entered the Ritz for searching. As expected, once they found the player they lost interest in doing a body search and hustled me over to the desk for a receipt. I believe it's called misdirection in the trade. I watched and recorded from the balcony, having survived the crush at the International in May and having no desire to repeat that experience. It was becoming clear that REM were ascending in popularity. Show over, I made my way to the desk to retrieve my player. Only to find that the tape had been removed. I was a little shocked, as a tape surrendered before a show cannot be confiscated, especially one with no recording tabs and clearly labelled John Hammond Demos. I Requested its return. They refused. Threatened to call the Police. I advised them I welcomed that as they had stolen my tape. I got dragged back inside to speak to 'the manager'. It might have been Bertis, I don't know. Explanations ensued. Dragged back the front desk, where a cardboard box filled with cassettes was produced and I retrieved my tape. I thanked then and got thrown down the stairs and out of the venue. Into a group of guys who became great friends. They asked what had gone on. I told them. They asked, "But DID you record it? I showed them the stashed WM-D6, safe and sound. Security - 1, sound recorders - 1 Here's the recording. Share and Enjoy!! starboy |
