He's also played a lot of other sideman gigs including a place in some of the later period Michael Brecker groups. I first became aware of him from the fact that he was one of 2 excellent guitarist in a band called Lost Tribe, an interesting fusion quintet "back in the last century". Lost Tribe also included David Gilmore, David Binney, Fima Ephrom, and Ben Perowsky. Rogers has released a few solo albums, most of which came in the first decade of the 2000's on the Criss Cross label. There regularly were gigs, at least in the NYC area, with quartets and quintets surrounding several of those albums. I saw a few of those shows, but not this one. The nature of the 55 Bar was that the sets and combination of players could be pretty loosely set. Regrettably, there's no formal info about who's on the "bandstand" (actually the floor on corner of the club on the way to the restroom!). I'm guessing that the sax player is David Binney, due to the fact that it sounds to me like an alto, and he too played pretty regularly at this venue back at this time (along with his prior and future associations with Rogers). Guesses for the bassist would include Scott Colley, who was on most of Rogers albums at this point, and the drummer may be Clarence Penn (for that same reason). The 55 Bar was probably best known for having Mike Stern there playing pretty regular nights on weeks he wasn't otherwise engaged. Lots of NYC musical fixtures played there or hung out there. I even recall seeing Cecil Taylor at a table near the door one night when I went to see Stern in the late 1980's. It was a pretty rowdy place, and I'm sure that it must've been a challenging venue in which to capture a clean recording. This definitely sounds like a DAT capture that came to me in a cd-r trade near to the time of the show. I re-tracked this in Audacity to remove gaps between the tracks. I used EQ and Mastering tools there to give the recording depth that was lacking, and it now sounds better than it had. sbe's were there too, and they were repaired in TLH. There is definitely some nearby chatter picked up, along with the usual kinds of "whoo's" that may be heard from appreciative patrons at shows where "chops are on display". These things don't detract too badly from hearing the music. During the last freeloader days I'd shared a couple of later shows from Rogers during a 2008 engagement at the Village Vanguard. They were well received and are still running here. This show hadn't been found back then, or it would've been shared at that same general time. I'm making up for that now. Enjoy! |
