Notes I recently corresponded with Denny Sanders regarding his Soundcloud post of his much dreamt of - and suddenly available after 54 years! - recording of the January 31, 1969 Boston Globe Jazz Festival performance by the Mothers of Invention with guest Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Soundcloud rips of Denny's recording yield at best a 128 kpbs / MP3, which I was hoping was just a lo-fi preview of this precious recording which would one day become available officially or elsewhere in more robust fidelity. No such luck, says Denny: "The recording which I have is an MP3 dub of the original tape which has pretty much disintegrated."

"I was in touch with the Zappa estate some time ago offering the recording gratis for their own release but have received no reply. This MP3 is the only surviving recording, as the original tape has been damaged. I am sure with today's sophisticated technology this posted mp3 recording can be enhanced if an organization would be willing to do it.

I have no desire to make any money off of this and only want Zappa/Kirk fans to enjoy the music of two great artists who are no longer around. The only thing that I would want would be a credit for supplying the recording if some commercial release was initiated.

I don't know if this would help, but I can send you a thumb drive of the mp3 and you can do what you wish with it, try to enhance it professionally, etc.

If you are tight with the Zappa estate, you can offer it to them with my compliments. If there is any official release, I would only request a credit "Recording courtesy of Denny Sanders"."

Much to my delight, I received a flash drive from Denny with a 192 kbps / MP3 copy of his recording: the best available version and source material for this Zappateers upgrade.

I asked Denny if he had done any other illicit recording, FZ or otherwise. Denny: "As far as other tapings go, I did manage to sneak my recorder into a Laura Nyro concert at Boston Music Hall in 1970. That is posted on SoundCloud as well: https://soundcloud.com/user-100188942/laura-nyro-at-boston-music-hall-10-25-70"

Tech Notes This nice mono recording required only speed correction. No phase offset misalignment could be detected.

Unfortunately, some defects could not be reconstructed or repaired, without reworking the recordings with remastering tools:
03 King Kong: Drop out from 21:38 to 21:39
06 Behind The Sun: Some audio damage from 5:52 to 6:12

Technical corrections:
Only the technically necessary corrections were made (please see lineage below).
As in old Zappateers tradition, no re-EQ or anything like that was added to the recording.

Audio restoration:
No audio restoration was necessary or possible for this recording.

Mono or Stereo?
This is a real mono recording!

To preserve the sound of the original recording as well as possible:
NO fade-in or -out, NO track normalisation, NO soundfilter!

All work on the recording was done in 16/44.1.

In short: There is no music left out!
