Notes Sons of Champlin opened for NRPS and the Grateful Dead at Winterland, New Year's Eve 1972. Much of the evening was broadcast on KSAN and recordings circulate widely. Sons of Champlin recordings usually start with a 30-second intro beginning with "This is the most people that's ever been here for a first set...." followed by Right On. A common lineage is "FM (KSAN) > MR > Cassette TDK-SA90 w/Dolby B" but there is at least one other version, very loud and much harsher, with the same setlist and also derived from the FM broadcast. To add confusion, another recording labeled 12/31/72 of a different performance also circulates (first songs are No Mo, I Feel Good).

Turns out that not all of the Sons of Champlin was broadcast. Wolfgang's Vault mentions that the recording picks up part way into the set. It's true.

Fortunately, it was recorded. This file set comes from a pre-FM KSAN reel. You can hear, in the crowd noise during last 30 seconds of Heaven Only Knows, the KSAN announcer being mixed in. It's clearly the same mix as the circulating post-FM recordings. Sadly, the reel ended in the middle of Lightnin'. Happily, the post-FM makes the perfect patch material. But you can hear the dynamics drop when the FM source kicks in.

A couple of small dropouts have been patched with audio from the opposite channel, and the tuning after Poppa Can Play The Blues has been pared down from 7 minutes to a lean 4:01. Otherwise, this is how the boys laid it down.

Enjoy!
