Notes JEMS Notes:

We've been fortunate to know CB for a few decades, first getting to know him for his pioneering work as one of the first serious Springsteen tapers along with his friend Joe Kivak.

CB has always been generous in the lending of tapes, and when he recently moved away from California, he gave JEMS his entire reel to reel collection along with some nice, no longer needed gear.

Among those reels were copies of the Talking Heads recordings CB made, some of best quality extant early tapes of the band. DIME is fortunate to have nfagtrfb curating an on-going series of Talking Heads releases from the best possible sources, including CB's tapes which have long been in circulation. But when I took a listen, I couldn't help but wonder if a better transfer might yield a superior result.

A few months ago I asked CB if he still had the master cassettes and he sent them my way. This two-set show was the first time CB recorded Talking Heads and he did so on a Memorex 120, one of my least favorite vintage tape types to work with. Memorex tapes don't age well, with the pressure pads often disintegrating and the tape squealing to the point of playback distortion.

I re-shelled the tape and it played back beautifully. The resulting transfer should be a material upgrade over the circulating versions. I will leave it to nfagdtrfb to explain that in greater detail as well as to contextualize CB's work among the earliest TH documents. Thanks to CB for letting us make what we hope is the definitive transfer of this historic material.

nfagdtrfb Notes:

Here's one of the best quality & complete trio-era recordings of the band; the tape is mono but captures the formative sound of the band very nicely. Tina’s bass is well-recorded along with David switching back & forth amongst his various guitars. The band is still finding its footing, with some big flubs in a few songs (…With Our Love and New Feeling, for example).

This is the earliest (known) date of TH playing in the "CB's at MFP" concert series, which was an effort to bring "new" music from CBGB's-based bands out to Long Island. TH was opening early & late sets for Mink DeVille on this night, and judging from the tape, the crowd is appreciative despite not knowing the band nor any of the songs.

This is also the first of two known recordings of "Theme", the TH instrumental & rarity. For some reason (technical or otherwise), Tina does not play on the encore, it's an unusual instance of David & Chris playing as a duo. THANKS to the JEMS crew & taper CB for providing this historical source!
